The Jaguar E-Pace (X540) is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV (C-segment in Europe) produced by the British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under their Jaguar marque. It was officially revealed on 13 July 2017 and was the second production Jaguar SUV.

The car is built in Graz, Austria, by Magna Steyr and from 2018 by Chery Jaguar Land Rover, JLR's joint venture with partner Chery, in Changshu, China.

Overview

Designed under the direction of Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum, the vehicle uses the JLR PTA platform, as used by the second incarnation of Range Rover Evoque and the second incarnation of Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The car has a transverse front engine and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

Stunt driver Terry Grant performed a world record barrel roll jump in the car for the reveal which took place at the London ExCel centre. The car did a 270 degree barrel roll and travelled 50 feet (15.3 metres) through the air.

Common 2019 Jaguar E-pace problems

The 2019 Jaguar E-Pace has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the diesel engine and exhaust system.

One of the most common issues is the timing chain problem in the 2.0L diesel Ingenium engine, which is used across the Jaguar Land Rover range. The timing chains stretch over time, causing engine rattling on start-up and potentially leading to irreparable engine failure if not replaced. Jaguar Land Rover introduced an upgraded design chain in November 2019 to eliminate this problem.

Another issue is related to the standard EU6 exhaust system used on 2.0 diesel XE models, which does not fit the E-Pace due to a bulkhead obstruction. Jaguar engineered a longer exhaust that runs around the bodywork, causing heat losses and making it difficult for the DPF to regenerate properly, especially on short journeys. This can result in the car going into "Limp Mode" and increased fuel consumption due to excess fuel used in the injection process. DPF blockages often require expensive replacement filters.

These problems can affect all 2.0 diesel models but seem most common on the D150 models. It is recommended to maintain the DPF and avoid short journeys to prevent these issues.

In addition to these engine and exhaust problems, the Jaguar E-Pace has historically ranked low in reliability surveys, with the brand claiming a disappointing 26th place out of 32 manufacturers in the 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey. The E-Pace itself also ranked towards the bottom of the survey’s family SUV category.

In terms of interior and passenger space, the E-Pace offers good legroom for rear passengers but is not as spacious as some competitors. It also lacks sliding and reclining rear seats, which are available in some rival models.

In summary, the 2019 Jaguar E-Pace has several common problems, primarily related to the diesel engine and exhaust system. It is recommended to maintain the DPF and avoid short journeys to prevent these issues. The E-Pace has also ranked low in reliability surveys, but it comes with a three-year warranty and offers good legroom for rear passengers.

Negative 2019 Jaguar E-pace car reviews

  1. Halle Jacobi 2025-11-06

I purchased this car as an alternative to the Volvo XC40 I wanted to order, which was far out on production. Although it was almost $10,000 more, I thought it would be a good choice. However, I found the tech to be extremely lacking and the interior to be simple, similar to my Chevy Cruze rs. Unfortunately, the car has had transmission issues twice, leaving me stranded on the road. When I was asked to review the car by Jaguar, my review was taken down. If you are considering purchasing this car, please be cautious.

  2. Nigel Ernser 2025-05-24

Although I am disappointed with my first luxury car, I have learned a valuable lesson about researching reviews before making a purchase. Unfortunately, my vehicle has required multiple repairs, including a brake job and alignment, despite only having 12000 miles. However, I am confident that these issues will be resolved and I am hopeful for a better experience in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  3. Mortimer Hayes 2025-04-20

I had a really bad experience with my Jaguar and unfortunately had to win a lawsuit to get rid of it. Despite owning 7 luxury cars prior to this one, it was by far the worst. I was initially drawn to it because it was not mass-produced and had great attention to detail, but unfortunately it spent more time in the shop than on the road. The car had many issues, including not starting even after multiple trips to the shop. It was frustrating to deal with, especially since the dealership no longer offered the valet service that I was promised. As a self-employed individual, it was difficult to maintain my reputation when I was constantly late for appointments due to car failures. Despite these issues, I am still hopeful that Jaguar will improve their product and customer service in the future. Thank you for listening to my experience.

  4. Virgil Kautzer 2025-04-20

Jaguar's E-Pace has some serious issues that need to be addressed. The engine power loss and limp home mode are well-known defects that Jaguar has attempted to fix with a software patch. However, this patch has caused further issues with the start/stop function and the synchronization between the engine and transmission. The lack of Apple or Android connectivity and poor voice recognition are also major drawbacks. It is important for Jaguar to take responsibility for these issues and work towards a solution that will satisfy their customers. Potential buyers should be aware of these problems before making a purchase decision.

  5. Xander Powlowski 2025-04-17

I purchased this car based on its captivating appearance, without reading any reviews. Although there have been some issues, such as the engine fan sound resembling a Moulinex juicer, wrinkling of the leather seats, and the need for a transmission replacement, the gear kicks on acceleration and deceleration are better than Roberto Carlos. Additionally, the air conditioning fan changes speed on its own. Despite some challenges with customer service and mechanics, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

Positive 2019 Jaguar E-pace car reviews

  1. Earl Macejkovic 2025-11-16

I've only had this car for a short time, but so far I haven't had any problems. It's really fun to drive, and even with the smaller turbo engine, it has plenty of pickup from the start. Merging into highway traffic is a breeze. I'm driving the S trim with lots of added options, and the leather seats are super comfortable. Even the standard options on the S trim are great, but I'd recommend upgrading to the Meridian sound system. My model has park assist, but it's a bit more difficult to use than the park assist on my previous Mercedes. There's enough room in the back seats for two adults, even when the front seats are pushed back. The storage space is smaller than my wife's Audi Q5, but with the back seats down, there's plenty of room for shopping at Costco and spending more than I need to! The interior trim isn't as fancy as some other luxury SUVs, but the reason to buy this car is the way it handles - especially the steering and acceleration. The warranty and service maintenance are included with the price of the car for 5 years or 50,000 miles. The only option for this car is a fixed glass roof with a sunshade, but I've never really used the roof on cars I've owned that had that functionality. I test drove several other SUV models before deciding on the E-Pace, but this one sold me because of the way it drove and the number of standard options included, which are usually extra on other models. Also, the current lease deals are virtually at 0% interest rate. There's virtually no wind noise on the highway. After I drive this car for a few thousand miles, I'll update this review.

  2. Lyric White 2025-11-10

You and your wife have owned several SUVs over the years and it's great to hear that you really love this one. The vehicle is not only fun to drive, but also has excellent handling and braking, which stops on a dime. It's impressive that you have the nearly 300 horsepower turbocharged 4 cylinder model, which is very quick. The safety features are also top-notch, with automatic braking that can stop the vehicle for you if you happen to miss seeing a pedestrian or biker. The heated windshield, seats, and steering wheel will definitely come in handy during the winter. Overall, it sounds like you made an excellent choice with this vehicle!

  3. Gabriel Zemlak 2025-08-17

I have purchased five vehicles using the same process. Firstly, I research various vehicles online in the class that I am interested in, which has always been a sports car in the past. Then, I compare different vehicles using Edmunds and Kelly. After narrowing down my selections, I schedule test drives. Once I decide on a specific vehicle, I go back to the internet to build the specific vehicle on the manufacturer's website and request a quote. Jaguar was quick to respond and amazingly had the E-Pace I built. The Corris Grey Metallic exterior along with the 19Raise the armrest of the center console and you'll find ample storage, along with two USB ports, a Micro Sim card slot, and a 12-volt outlet. If you get the impression that I like my car, you're absolutely right - I love it!

  4. Craig Rogahn 2025-08-16

This car has had poor reviews, but don't believe everything you read. My E-Pace is nimble, comfortable, and receives compliments daily. It stops on a dime and accelerates quickly when you need to get around fast. The controls are user-friendly, including the easy-to-use gear shift. It even has regular tires and a real spare, unlike run-flats. With every option you could want, it rides smoothly and is comparable to a 2021 Audi Q7. UPDATE: Although this SUV is not a coupe, it handles like a sports car, turning on a dime and braking quickly even at high speeds. The beautiful black metallic paint shows specks of green in the sun. I can start it with my phone and it will run for a half hour. It has a cell phone holder, which is convenient, and cooled seats that are perfect for Florida. I highly recommend this vehicle.

  5. Tomas Bergstrom 2025-07-01

I receive compliments frequently on my car's sharp appearance, which is something my husband's BMW X5 never achieves. I thoroughly enjoy the driving experience. However, the subwoofer causes my car to shake and the doors to rattle, which is my only complaint. Additionally, the back seat is quite small.
