- Summary: On March 30, 2023, at approximately 7:10 pm, my son was involved in an auto accident with his 2012 Toyota Corolla and his airbags did not deploy. His vehicle was impacted on the driver’s side fender and bumper. He was traveling, approximately 50 mph in the center lane. The other vehicle that was involved had their airbags deploy. My son did experience chest, shoulder and neck pain from the impact. He was taken to Baylor-Scott and White Hospital for his injuries. The vehicle was inoperable and towed to the Lewisville impound for storage. The Flower Mound Police Department responded to the accident and an accident report was completed. On March 05, 2020, I received a notice for the Airbag Safety Recall for VIN 5YFBU4EE1CP051025. On April 03, 2020, I received a payment of $62.25 for the Takata Airbag Product Liability Litigation, No. 1:15md-02599-FAM. On May 19, 2020, the Toyota Corolla was serviced at Lone Star Toyota pursuant to the safety recall. An Airbag Harness Kit was installed.

- Summary: My Corolla flipped over upside down going 30 miles an hour. I collided with another vehicle that was stopped in the opposing lane of travel to turn left. We both barely were over center the line at impact that somehow caused my Corolla to roll upside down. Some how this did not deploy the safety airbags either. The airbags are not my complaint; but rather that I managed to flip upside down going 30 mph from a driver side collision. I’m writing in an attempt to understand why it wasn’t just an impact, but actually flipped the vehicle over. Also, why the safety airbags, which were recalled and repaired, did not engage upon impact. I just replaced the transmission 3 weeks prior to this bizarre accident, that may have totaled my vehicle. It’s still sitting in my garage because new investments had just been made to keep it in good shape for another year (transmission, tires, headlights, plate renewal, etc). I was planning to purchase a new Toyota suv the following spring or shortly after. Unfortunately this collision has derailed all future ambitions regarding my mode of transportation and forced me to purchase an extremely old Toyota Avalon in order for me to function in my daily life as a single parent. I am very fortunate to have escaped any serious injuries considering I was upside down, hanging from my seatbelt, and even more grateful that I had not gotten my 9 year old daughter yet. I was in route to pick her up around 4pm when it happened. I would love some insight or science as to why or how that could have happened. *side complaint- the grill of my Corolla has fallen off twice unnoticeably (and I purchased and replaced with a new one both times). Why are either the fasteners not stronger or why isn’t the bottom of the vehicle itself not stronger. It’s the flimsiest plastic which shouldn’t be used on something meant to transport the most precious cargo. I’ve noticed it is very common for many Corollas to be missing the grill piece since it’s become a “thing”.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HER DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING 70 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO SWITCH LANES, THE VEHICLE AHEAD ABRUPTLY STOP CAUSING THE CONTACT'S DAUGHTER TO CRASH INTO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE THEN SPUN AROUND SEVERAL TIMES AND CRASHED INTO A CEMENT BARRIER. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS CONTACTED AND TOOK THE CONTACT TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS TREATED FOR HER INJURIES. THE CONTACT SPENT ONE NIGHT IN THE HOSPITAL TO RECONSTRUCT HER JAW. THE POLICE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A HOLDING LOT WHERE THE INSURANCE ADJUSTOR WENT OUT AND DEEMED THE VEHICLE A TOTAL LOSS. BILL ESTES TOYOTA (3232 HARPER RD, INDIANAPOLIS, IN 46240, (317) 434-6990) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE DEALER OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2012 Toyota Corolla.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. - Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Update 12/20/21: I'm still driving my trusty Corolla, which now has 104K miles. It's a great car with nice handling and a smooth ride. The only issue I've had is with the acceleration, which can be a bit jumpy at times. However, I found a helpful tip to fix this problem - keeping the throttle body clean! After I had it cleaned, the car takes off like a dream with just a light touch of the gas pedal. The front seats could use a bit more padding, but overall they're comfortable enough. I'm not sure what type of fabric they're using nowadays, but I would have preferred some crushed velour. I've sat in cars that are 30 years older than this one, and they were more comfortable than these front seats! I had to add an aftermarket stereo system (Alpine head unit, 4 Memphis speakers and Audiopipe amp) since the factory one was terrible and I could hardly hear it. I've been in cars that are 15+ years older that have way better factory sound systems! Despite these minor issues, this car is really fun to drive and incredibly reliable. You just can't beat Toyota's dependability - not even Honda comes close!

We are thrilled to have purchased our 4th Carolla and 6th Toyota product! Although the new Carolla does not come standard with some options we previously had (such as automatic lights and cruise control), we are still impressed with the improved fit and finish, as well as the smoother and less noisy ride. We have always had great luck with the reliability of Toyota products, as none of our Toyotas have ever required repairs, just oil changes. We are confident that this new purchase will be just as reliable. While other cars such as the Impreza, Mazda 3, Ford Focus, and Chevy Cruze may offer more options and be zippier, we value the reliability and longevity of our Toyota. In fact, we were so happy with our last Toyota that we gave it to a 17-year-old family member. Thank you, Toyota, for providing us with such a great product!

I've only had this car for a few weeks, but we've already put on some miles and we're extremely pleased with it. It looks and runs better than a seven-year-old car with 100,000 miles on it has any right to do. It's extremely smooth and comfortable, gets great gas mileage, and the controls and layout make it easy for anyone in our family to jump into the driver's seat and feel immediately comfortable. In researching other used cars in the same price range, the 2012 Corolla really stood out as especially reliable. So far, I certainly agree. (As I would with any used car, I looked for one with a documented service history and I recommend others do the same.) It's probably not the best choice if you're after driving excitement, but as a reliable everyday driver for commuting, errands and the like, it's hard to beat.

I received this car as a gift, but my dream car was the Camry. Unfortunately, I ended up with the 2012 LE Corolla instead of the 2012 Camry XLE that I had hoped for. While the inside is small and basic, and the shape may not be to everyone's taste, I'm sure there are some positives to this car that I just haven't discovered yet.

My gut feeling initially made me hesitant to buy a Toyota, especially after the sticky gas pedal/brake fail issue. However, I decided to go for the Corolla as it fit my budget. Last weekend, I drove it from DC to Ohio, a one-way trip of 450 miles. Unfortunately, things started to go wrong as soon as I left the city. The handling of the car was not up to par, and it made me feel uneasy. While I value comfort, I don't want it to come at the expense of safety. Additionally, the brakes were a concern. I noticed a burning smell after descending a few hills, and the brake pedal required a lot of pressure to slow down.

The advertised gas mileage is not accurate. Despite starting out at 30 mpg in town, after 700 miles, the mileage has decreased to 24 mpg. The highway mileage is only 31 mpg. Additionally, the warning buzzer is too weak to be heard while the car is running and barely audible when the car is shut off. Despite maintenance's inability to address the buzzer, I am confident that this car is not a suitable option for those prioritizing fuel efficiency.
