1993 Mazda Protege problems

The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.

It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".

The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).

Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

Common 1993 Mazda Protege problems

The Mazda Protege, produced between 1990 and 2003, has been known to have several common problems, particularly with its engine, brakes, and electrical system.

One of the most prevalent issues across various model years is engine problems, which account for a significant portion of the complaints.

Brake issues have also been a significant concern for Mazda Protege owners. The 2002 model year, in particular, has been plagued by caliper and brake problems, which have been reported by a considerable number of owners.

The electrical system is another area where the Mazda Protege has experienced issues. For instance, the 2000 model year has been reported to have problems with the alternator, which can cause the engine to stall and the lights to come on.

Other common problems include idling issues, rusting, air conditioning not working, and airbags and seat belts malfunctioning.

It is important to note that these issues may not be exclusive to the 1993 model year, but rather common problems across various model years of the Mazda Protege.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-08-05
  • VIN: JM1BG2248P0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: 1) I HAVE A 93 MAZDA 323/PROTEGE AND THE SEAT BELT WERE RECALLED ACCORDING TO THE WEB SIT SAFERCARS.GOV. NHTSA ID NO.97V211000 2)THE SEAT BELT LIGHT WAS ON MY VEHICLE AND THE BELT REFUSES TO MOVE ON THE RAIL SOME TIMES. IN ADDITION THE BUZZER COMES ON WHILE I AM DRIVING AND THE BELT TENDS TO MOVE SLIGHTLY UP AND DOWN WHILE I AM DRIVING. 3) I TOOK THE CAR INTO MAZDA TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND THE DEALER SAID THAT ITS GOING TO BE $ 98.95 TO HAVE THE CAR LOOKED AT. IF THEY FIND A PROBLEM THAT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE PARTS ON THE RECALL THEY WOULD REPAIR IT. I LEFT THE CAR AT THE SHOP FOR MORE THAN 3 FULL DAYS AND THEY SAID THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT FROM THE RAILING, AND ALSO THAT THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THE SEAT BELTS BUT INSTEAD IT WAS A SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM BY MAZDA. THE DEALER SAID THAT THE CENTER SEAT BELT RETRACTION UNIT HAS GONE BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND ALSO THAT THE DOOR SWITCH FOR THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT IS STARTING TO GO BAD. I CALLED MAZDA HEAD QUARTER UNIT AND SPOKE TO STEVE A CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT AND HE FIRST SAID THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THE DOOR SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE EVEN THOUGH THE 12 YR EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER SHIP 2 DAYS LATER TO SEE WHAT IS THE PROGRESS AND TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO PERFORM ANY REPAIRS. I CALLED STEVE AND HE SAID THAT AFTER AGAIN TALKING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT THEIR FAULT. WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR I ASKED TO SERVICE MANAGER WHAT COULD HAPPEN IT THE PARTS ARE NOT REPLACED AND I GET IN A CRASH, HE ANSWERED THAT IF I DON'T PAY THEM TO FIX THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM, THERE IS A CHANCE THAT THE SEAT BELT UNIT WILL NOT LOCK IN TIME TO KEEP THE FRONT OCCUPANTS SEATED. SO IN CONCLUSION THE MAZDA DEALER DOES NOT GUARANTY THE SEAT BELTS WILL FUNCTION PROPERLY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. CHARGED ME 99 DOLLARS TO INSECT THE BELTS WHICH THEY THEM SELF SAID THAT ACCORDING TO THEIR DATA BASE WERE NEVER INSPECTED. AND SAID THAT ITS GOING TO COST MINIMUM $ 900 TO FIX. *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-07-21
  • VIN: JM1BG2243P0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: NOTHING LED UP TO THE FAILURE, ONE DAY THE PASSIVE SEATBELT JUST WENT ABOUT HALF-WAY UP THE TRACK, THEN IT STOPPED AND A GREASY CABLE POPPED OUT OF IT. WORST OF ALL, MAZDA'S EMERGENCY HANDLE WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO TURN AN INTERNAL HEX NUT TO MOVE THE SEATBELT REARWARD ONLY MADE ABOUT ONE TURN UNTIL IT GOT STIFF AND PUTTING ANY MORE FORCE ON THE EMERGENCY HANDLE CAUSES IT TO SLIP AND ROUND OFF. TRYING TO FORCE THE PASSIVE SHOULDER BELT BUCKLE REARWARD BY HAND DOESN'T WORK EITHER, IT'S EXTREMELY STIFF AND WHEN IT WILL MOVE (WHICH IS ONLY SLIGHTLY) THE CABLE COMES OUT EVEN FURTHER. THIS LEAVES THE SEATBELT IN A POSITION WHERE IT WON'T HOLD THE DRIVER IN THE SEAT INCASE OF A CRASH, AND IF THE SEATBELT IS LEFT PLUGGED IN IT DRASTICALLY REDUCES VISIBILITY OUT OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. I TOOK THE CAR TO MAZDA DEALER NUMBER 10158 ABOUT THE NHTSA RECALL ID NUMBER 97V211000 BUT THE DEALER SAID IT DIDN'T APPLY TO MY CAR AND THEY QUOTED A PRICE OF NEARLY $800 TO FIX THE SEATBELT. A FRIEND OF MINE WHO ALSO HAS A 93 PROTEGE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE PASSIVE SEATBELT THREE YEARS AGO. SHE TOOK IT TO A DIFFERENT DEALER AND THEY ALSO WOULD NOT HANDLE THE RECALL.*AK

  • VIN: JM1BG226XP0
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: THE PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENSES HAVE LOST THEIR TRANSPARENCY WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE OR NEGLECT IN CARE. THE NIGHTTIME ILLUMINATION HAS BEEN GREATLY REDUCED. WHILE THIS HAS NOT OCCURRED IN AN OLDER '89 MAZDA 626 WE HAVE OWNED SINCE NEW, I HAVE NOTICED THIS TYPE OF PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENS OPACITY IN EARLY '90'S FORD ESCORTS AND DODGE/PLYMOUTH NEONS. I CAN RECALL WHEN IN 1966-67, THE US GOVERNMENT PROHIBITED EXTERNAL HEADLIGHT LENSES (AS IN VW BEETLES) BECAUSE VISIBILITY COULD BECOME REDUCED IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS DUE TO FOGGING OR ICE/SNOW BUILDUP. WHY IS IT THAT SOME MANUFACUTURERS CAN NOW HAVE THESE PLASTIC "EXTERNAL" LENSES (E.G. NOT SEALED BEAM) THAT HAVE COMPOUNDS AFFECTED BY AGING (NOT DAMAGE OR NEGLECT) THAT BRING ON A CONDITION THAT THE NHTSA EXPRESSLY TRIED TO AVOID IN THE LATE 1960'S. I SHOULD ADD THE CONSUMER CAN REMEDY THIS SITUATION ONLY BY INVESTING MANY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR OEM OR AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENTS, WITHOUT ANY FAULT OF THEIR OWN.*AK

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-07-01
  • VIN: JM1BG2242P0
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THE PIPE THAT YOU PUT GASOLINE IN FROM THE OUTSIDE THAT CARRIES THE GASOLINE TO THE GAS TANK CORRODED AND RUSTED AT 36,000 MILES WHEN THE CAR WAS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD. IT WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY IN MARCH 1995. THE REPLACEMENT PART IS NOW CORRODED AND RUSTED. HAVE BEEN TO DEALERSHIP AND MET WITH FACTORY REP AND THEY WILL NOT FIX IT SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. ALL AGREE THAT IT SHOULD NOT BE OCCURING BUT WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. RECOMMENDED THAT I CONTACT YOU TO SEE IF THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IF A RECALL IS INSTITUTED, THEY WILL THEN FIX THE PROBLEM. AT THE TIME OF MY MEETING WITH THE FACTORY REP, THERE HAPPENED TO BE ANOTHER PROTEGE (1990) IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR ANOTHER PROBLEM AND IT ALSO HAS A CORRODED/RUSTED FUEL LINE. ISN'T THIS A SAFETY PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF THE CORROSION/RUST AFFECTING THE INTEGRITY OF THE METAL AND THEREFORE BE A FIRE HAZARD WHEN GASOLINE IS PUT INTO THE CAR? MYSELF AND FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE HAD NUMEROUS CARS OVER THE YEARS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE OR HAD THIS PROBLEM. MANY MECHANICS CLAIM THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM AND AGREE THAT IT SHOULD NOT BE OCCURING AND IT COULD VERY WELL BE A SAFETY HAZARD AS WELL AS A HAZARD TO THE ENGINE IF A PIECE OF THE CORROSION BREAKS OFF AND TRAVELS INTO THE ENGINE. WONDER HOW MANY OTHER PROTEGE'S HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND IF SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT? FEEL IT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED ONCE, MUCH LESS A SECOND TIME. FEEL THE QUALITY OF THE METAL PIPE USED IS NOT SUFFICIENT AND THEREFORE COULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN IF THE INGEGRITY OF THE METAL BECOMES INVOLVED WHEN ENOUGH CORROSION/RUST DEVELOPS.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1998-11-13
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: JM1BG2244P0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: OWNER RECEIVED A RECALL SAFETY NOTICE FROM MAZDA NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS, WHICH READS IN RELEVANT PART: ' [T]HE PASSIVE SHOULDER BELT BUCKLE STAYS AT THE REARMOST POSITION EVEN IF THE DOOR IS OPENED.' OWNER EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM BUT WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT THE BELT NOT ONLY STAYED IN THE REARMOST POSITION, BUT THAT IT DID SO WITH GREAT FORCE, PINNING THE OWNER IN THE VEHICLE AND CAUSING MINOR ABRASION TO OWNER'S NECK. OWNER THEN TOOK VEHICLE IN TO DEALER FOR RECALL REPAIR. DEALER CLAIMED THE PROBLEM WAS UNRELATED TO THE RECALL NOTICE AND REFUSED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. OWNER STRONGLY STATED THAT THE PROBLEM EXPERIENCED WAS EXACTLY THE PROBLEM THAT WAS THE SUBJECT OF THE RECALL. WHEN DEALER REFUSED TO REPAIR, OWNER CONTACTED MAZDA CEO RICHARD BEATTIE AND VARIOUS OTHER PERSONNEL AT MAZDA MOTORS BUT COULD RECEIVE NO SATISFACTION. LEGAL ACTION IS PENDING. OWNER BELIEVES THAT THE STARTLING AND SUDDEN NATURE OF THIS EVENT COULD RESULT IN EITHER DRIVERS OR PASSENGERS BEING TRAPPED IN A VEHICLE ON FIRE OR IMMERSED IN WATER OR IN SOME OTHER EMERGENCY, BEFORE THEY FIGURED OUT HOW TO EITHER SLIP OUT OF THE TAUT BELT OR RELEASE IT WITH THE MANUAL RELEASE. OWNER ALSO BELIEVES THAT MAZDA IS AWARE OF THE SEVERE NATURE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT IS ATTEMPTING TO CONCEAL IT AND IS ATTEMPTING TO AVOID MAKING NEEDED SAFETY REPAIRS.

Negative 1993 Mazda Protege car reviews

  1. Jaren Hill 2024-10-27

I absolutely love my car! I've driven it for 80,000 miles and it still runs like a dream, even though I bought it with 150,000 miles on it. It's incredibly reliable and I've only had to replace a tie rod and an alternator in the 4 years I've owned it. I've put it through its paces, running it into a mailbox, bottoming it out countless times, and e-braking around corners, but it still performs like a champ. The only thing that could be improved is its appearance, as it looks like every other import from its year. However, it's still a great car that will get you where you need to go with minimal maintenance. If you're looking for a reliable daily driver, I highly recommend my Protege when I sell it.

  2. Ted Doyle 2024-09-09

I bought my Protege in December 1999. Although I have had some issues with rust and had to replace the exhaust, I have found it to be a good car overall. I would recommend the Protege, especially with the 1.8l DOCH 16-valve engine.

  3. Hilario Cormier 2024-03-07

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I've had since '99. It's been a great little car that has seen a lot of miles - more than some cars see in three years! Despite that, it's held up really well, with only a minor issue with the radiator. I'm really impressed with the gas mileage I get - about 35 mpg combined city and highway. That's pretty amazing for a car with 270,000 miles on it! Even with only 125 horsepower, it's surprisingly zippy. If you're looking for a reliable, durable, and reasonably sporty little car that won't break the bank, I would highly recommend a 93-95 vintage Protege. It's been a great choice for me, and I think it could be for you too!

  4. Devon Predovic 2024-01-24

I bought this car for only $2850 from an auto auction back in 1998 when it had 61,000 miles on it. Since then, I have put 50,000 miles on it and have had to replace a few parts such as the brakes, battery, tires, both CV joints, and exhaust system. The only non-consumable parts that needed replacing were the CV joints and air intake hose. Despite these minor issues, I have never been stranded by the car and am very happy with its 1.8L DOHC engine that gets 30 mpg and is fun to rev. The clutch is still original! Although there have been a few setbacks such as both CV joints failing, one at 105k and the other at 110k, and the air intake hose cracking at 100k, the car has been reliable and economical. It is also surprisingly roomy for its size. The only downsides are that the rear doors are now a bit stiff to close and it sways more than it should in corners. It also lacks ABS and airbags. Overall, I am very pleased with this car.

Positive 1993 Mazda Protege car reviews

  1. Sylvester Gerhold 2024-11-09

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned your car has had a few repairs over the years, including brakes, alternators, mufflers/pipes, and a hose. While there may be a slight transmission issue, it's still running well and getting great gas mileage at 30mpg/highway and 24mpg/city. Just a heads up, the electric system and AC may require some maintenance. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Ismael Walter 2024-09-17

Your 93 Protege has been outstanding! With 116K miles on it, it's amazing that you've never had to make any repairs other than normal maintenance.

  3. Lawson Legros 2024-09-10

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1993 Mazda car. I have to say, I've really enjoyed driving it all these years. It's been a reliable companion, and I haven't had any major issues with it. Of course, like any car, it's needed some regular maintenance and a few repairs here and there, like a timing belt and cv boot replacement. But overall, it's been a great ride. I did have a spark plug blow out and a radiator leak at one point, but those were fixed without any hassle. It does burn a little oil now, but after 10 years and 120,000 miles, I think that's to be expected. One time, I had a problem with the seat belt light coming on and staying on, but the folks at the Mazda dealership took care of it for me free of charge. They really stand behind their products. All in all, I would definitely buy a Mazda again in the future!

  4. Johnnie Padberg 2024-08-26

Hey there! So they were looking for a catchy title, huh? Well, let me tell you about these cars. While they may not be the most exciting, they are incredibly reliable and built to last. I did notice some issues with handling and body flex, which surprised me coming from a car that handled so well. The claimed horsepower also didn't seem to match up to my experience, but overall the Mazda engines were dependable. One thing I really appreciated was how durable these cars were - even after 15 harsh midwest winters, there wasn't a speck of rust on my Protogé! I always felt like I could count on it.

  5. Wilson Beahan 2024-08-02

My protege is a great and reliable car. I have only had to replace the radiator, which is a testament to its durability. I cannot stress enough how reliable this car is. The 1.8L engine is an excellent combination with the car's weight and size, making it a pleasure to drive. I highly recommend this car over a Honda Civic any day!
