The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Also killed me and my kids the way the wheel just locked and didnt move. A customer service rep said she would give me a $100 coupon off services . But I honestly I do not have the extra money to take the car to a delaership and get fixed . I know that will cost me almost $1000. - Summary: The Vehicles brake lights are not working Properly. They are on when driving and no brake pedal pressure is applied. When you Apply Brake Pedal Pressure the Brake lights go out. This is a safety hazard cars approaching from the rear do not see a stopped car. Chevrolet had a Special policy and Technical bulletin regarding this issue. It stated that the electrical pins going to the body control computer did not have sufficient Contact. The Bulletin went on to say that to attempt to resolve the issue apply Dielectric Grease to the contacts in an effort to allow the contacts to make sufficient contact to pass the current. They also advised to secure the wiring Harness to the body control computer and structure of the car. This is a major Safety issue Effecting cars from 2006-2014.

When I first got it inspected at a mechanic, they said that there was a recall for this exact issue for cars with my same make and model, so I should go to the dealer to get it fixed for free. The dealer told me that I was not eligible for free service, so I had to pay out of pocket to get the issue fixed with my mechanic. However, the issue has come back and the dealer is estimating about $2000 to fix this issue. I've already put out over $1000 to fix this issue, and being that the problem with my car is the exact reason why cars of the same year, make, and model were recalled, my car was clearly one of the affected vehicles. Therefore, the dealer needs to pay for the repair of the car so that it can be back on the road safely.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
- Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
- Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the PARK position, the transmission may not be in PARK. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

- Summary: TI AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN FUEL PUMPS, PART NUMBERS TU456 AND TU303, SOLD UNDER VARIOUS BRAND NAMES AS AFTERMARKET AND REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE MOTOR VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP MAY SEIZE, STOPPING THE FUEL FLOW TO THE ENGINE CREATING A STALLING CONDITION.
- Consequence: A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR SHOULD THE ENGINE STALL WHILE IN USE.

When I was looking to buy a car, I had a few models in mind. My original list included the Camry, Accord, Malibu, and Altima. The new Camry was a typical Camry, and unfortunately, the only V6 in my price range was the LE, which was hard to find. The Accord was refurbished and essentially the same car from four years ago. The Altima was a bit skittish, and I would have had to buy a used 3.5. The Malibu SS had everything I wanted except for a sunroof, which was standard. It had 18-inch wheels, 4-wheel disc, ABS, side airbags (5-star crash test), sport suspension, remote start, climate control, cruise control, and a three-spoke wheel. Since it was a large dealership needing every sale it could get, I was able to negotiate the price down to 22k!

I have owned my car for just over 4 months now and I must say, the more I drive it, the more I like it! I absolutely love all of the features on this car, especially the remote start and heated seats. The car drives incredibly well and has a lot more room than you would expect for a mid-sized car. It handles all sorts of weather, including snow, with no problems at all. Overall, it truly is a really nice car with a lot going for it!

This is my first Chevy and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it so far. After reading other reviews, it seems that those with the LT 2.2 are particularly satisfied with their vehicle. The gas mileage is good and I find this car to be much more comfortable than my previous Mazda. I hope that Chevy will continue to make improvements to their cars, as I can see myself being a loyal Chevy customer in the future. Wishing everyone safe and enjoyable driving in their Malibu - I know I am!

The car is great on gas mileage, especially with the 2.2 ECO-TEC engine. On a straight interstate trip, I was able to get over 500 miles out of a tank, and with mixed driving, I usually get around 350-375 miles. It's also a fun car to drive, very responsive and handles very well. Even in snowy conditions, I have never had a problem getting around. While the exterior may not be the most eye-catching, it's definitely not an eyesore either. The interior is fairly plain, but it's not terrible either. The seats are comfortable and there is ample room in the back for passengers.

You have a great car that has been consistently reliable. It has not had any major or minor problems, except for a few minor glitches. The car is also very comfortable and handles bumps and turns smoothly.

I am disappointed with my second Malibu, an '07 model, which has been plagued with several issues despite having only 52k miles. The gas gauge is faulty, the transmission slams and slips gears, and there is a grinding noise in the front wheels (although the brakes are fine). Despite keeping up with all scheduled maintenance, the power-train warranty expired after 5 years, which is frustrating. Although the dealer claims they cannot find anything wrong with the transmission, I believe that it is unacceptable for the car to feel like it has been rear-ended every time I come to a stop. Additionally, I find it inconvenient that the transmission is a closed system, requiring a mechanic to check the fluid level. Overall, I am confident in my assessment of the issues with my car and believe that they need to be addressed promptly.

So you paid 2700 for a Chevy Malibu with 92,000 miles on it. The car was great for the first week, but after that, you started having cranking problems and overheating issues. Unfortunately, the passenger airbag sensor is also faulty. Additionally, the radiator, heater coil, and water pump had to be fixed just a week after purchasing. It's understandable that you're not happy with Chevy. To make matters worse, even the new thermostat turned out to be faulty. It's definitely not a good purchase.

I recently experienced a car accident due to the steering wheel locking up, which caused the front axle and A arm to break. GM sent out an inspector who determined that the reason for the accident was that I had hit a curb. However, I disagree with this conclusion and am disappointed with their response. As a loyal customer, I expected better from such a reputable company. Additionally, I was surprised to hear that this issue had never been reported before, as I have found many complaints online about the same problem. Unfortunately, I no longer feel safe driving this car and have lost confidence in GM. I urge them to investigate this matter and consider a recall if necessary.

I was hoping that this car would be as good as the previous GM products I have purchased in the past. However, I am disappointed with my experience so far. The road noise is my number one complaint, as I can hear every bump and rattle underneath the car. Additionally, the plastic bumpers, grill, and lights are easily moved with your hands, and the whole front end is held on by plastic clips, which contributes to the road noise. I believe that GM could have done a better job with this product.

Maintaining this vehicle can be quite challenging. Unfortunately, there is limited information available on the 2007 Malibu model. Additionally, the placement of almost every sensor on this vehicle is less than ideal, which can make replacing them a difficult task. At 80,000k miles, I had to replace several sensors, including both O2 sensors (which were located in hard-to-reach areas), the Purge Solenoid (located above the gas tank), the vent solenoid (which was surprisingly the easiest to replace), and the fuel pump.
