Common 1991 Ford Tempo problems
The 1991 Ford Tempo, while known for its reliability, has some common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues range from engine performance to electrical system malfunctions.
One of the most common problems reported is the lack of power and acceleration. This issue is often attributed to the car's age and the design of the engine. The 1991 Ford Tempo was equipped with a 2.3L inline-four engine, which was known for its modest power output. Some owners have reported that the car struggles to accelerate, especially when driving uphill or carrying a heavy load.
Another issue that has been reported is electrical system malfunctions, specifically related to the ignition switch. In some cases, the ignition switch has been known to experience an internal short circuit, which could lead to a complete loss of electrical power. This issue was serious enough to prompt a recall in 1996, where dealers were instructed to replace the ignition switch.
The 1991 Ford Tempo has also been known to experience problems with the fuel system, specifically the fuel pump. Some owners have reported that the fuel pump has failed, which can cause the car to stall or fail to start. This issue can be particularly problematic, as it can leave the driver stranded.
The engine and cooling system have also been known to cause problems in the 1991 Ford Tempo. Some owners have reported issues with the engine mounts, which can cause the engine to vibrate excessively. Additionally, the cooling system has been known to leak, which can cause the engine to overheat.
Finally, the transmission has also been known to cause problems in the 1991 Ford Tempo. Some owners have reported that the transmission has slipped or failed, which can cause the car to lose power or stall. This issue can be particularly problematic, as it can lead to a complete loss of drive.
In conclusion, while the 1991 Ford Tempo is known for its reliability, it is not without its problems. Some of the most common issues reported by owners include lack of power, electrical system malfunctions, fuel system problems, engine and cooling system issues, and transmission problems. These issues can be particularly problematic, as they can leave the driver stranded or cause the car to lose power.

I DID NOT LEARN ABOUT THIS HIDDEN DEFECT UNTIL THE NEWS MEDIA ANNOUNCED MAJOR LAWSUITS AGAINST FORD FOR THIS HIDDEN PROBLEM, WHICH MATCHES MY SYMPTOMS EXACTLY. It's great on gas mileage! And if you're looking for a little more speed, just add a turbo and it runs like a dream. I've had it for a while now and the only maintenance needed has been regular tune-ups!
-
Your car has been pretty reliable, but there have been some electrical problems and oil leaks. It's important to get the ignition switch replaced (it was recalled for this). You may also want to keep an eye on the starter, as it has had some trouble in the past. However, the engine is very durable and has lasted a long time. The transmission didn't need replacing until 145,000 miles, which is impressive. While the design of the radio/air conditioner switches is not great and they tend to break easily, the seats are very comfortable and the ride is pretty smooth for a small car. The car may not be the most attractive, but the paint lasts a long time with no rust. Overall, it sounds like a decent car that has served you well.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Ford Tempo that I bought brand new in 1990. It's been such a reliable car over the years, only needing a new muffler. It's great on gas and built to last. I've been in a few fender benders, but it's always held up. Unfortunately, the transmission went last year, but I know I can fix it myself with just a new case. The A/C also stopped working, but I think it just needs a new compressor. Overall, I've been really happy with this car and it's been a great companion over the years.
-
I love this car! With just routine maintenance, this car is unbeatable. It is an absolute 'bear' in the snow. It now has over 173,000 miles and is beginning to show some surface rust, so I'm looking for a replacement vehicle. If it were economically feasible to replace the body and keep the car, I'd do it!

My wife bought this car years ago and we've had it for about years now. I can't bring myself to part with it. I drive it like a rally car and it's been through a lot with me. I've replaced a battery, two exhausts, and tires once. I even bought a 2-piece CV boot for both sides because they tore. I've done two brake jobs, but the rear brake design with that stupid adjuster can be a pain. I also replaced the serpentine belt just for the heck of it, but it was no big deal. The only reason I'm getting rid of it is because I have 2 kids and a dog now. Stay tuned for my upcoming review on the 99 Plymouth Voyager!

Hey there! I remember my first car, a 1990 Ford Tempo. It had its ups and downs, but overall it wasn't the best experience. Unfortunately, it broke down quite often and always seemed to be leaking something. The summers were tough because the A/C was broken, and the winters were even worse because it took forever to warm up and had no traction. On the bright side, it never overheated in the winter! Well, most of the time. When I finally got a new car, they gave me $500 for it, which was really nice of them. By the way, have you checked out my car review of the 1997 Honda Civic HX? It's a great car!

It sounds like you had a bit of a rough time with it. It seems like things were always falling off or out of it, and repairs were both costly and difficult. And to top it all off, it even caught fire! That must have been quite an experience.

It sounds like you got a good deal on your car, but unfortunately it didn't last very long. It might be best to only consider purchasing it if you can find it at a very low price.

This one-owner auto has been a reliable and good running/riding car, with 130,000 miles on the clock. Although it has the notorious thick-film module problem, it still manages to cruise the interstate at 80-85 all day and gives me 28mpg. The car has a gigantic trunk and a great stereo/tape audio for an old beater. The non-metallic red paint still shines up great and they don't make them like this anymore. There are a lot of these running around Kansas, which is a testament to their overall quality. Although it's a 17-year-old car, I wouldn't take less than $2000 for it, but it's not for sale!

You're fairly dependable and get me where I'm going (most times).
