The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."
  • Consequence: A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

    I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2013 Camry XLE. As someone who has driven a 97 Camry for 16 years, I was excited to upgrade to a newer model. However, I have noticed that the suspension is much stiffer than what I am used to, which has been a bit disappointing. I was also surprised to find that the front seat backs curve forward near the top, making it difficult for me to find a comfortable driving position due to my height. Despite these issues, I have found the hybrid drive system to be wonderful and efficient, consistently achieving mid to high 40s MPG. The car also handles well and has plenty of power.     I think that cars like the Camry, Accord, Civic, Corolla are great for commuting. They are reliable and get you from A to B with ease. It's unnecessary to judge these cars based on their roadholding or acceleration numbers, or the level of luxury appointments and usage of top shelf materials. I personally got the Camry for commuting and it does the job perfectly without any fuss. I've even been able to achieve better mpg than what's posted. Although I could have gotten a Prius or Insight for better mpg's, I wanted more comfort and room, and something that at least resembles a car. The Camry rides comfortably and is perfect for a commuter car. Compared to its rival, the Accord, I have to say I like the steering feel and more taut suspension in my girlfriend's '15 Accord after driving my Camry. It's not a dealbreaker for me though. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the lack of steering feel and the brakes. It's hard to explain how it feels, but it's my biggest gripe. Overall, I'm content with driving the Camry knowing I'm not spending a ton on gas and I'm not worrying about the car breaking no matter how many miles I pile on. It's a great car for blending in with the thousands and thousands of other Camry's on the road. It serves a purpose just like a washing machine or refrigerator, and nothing more nor less.

    I purchased this 'family car' brand new in 2014, trading in my 'cool car', a 2011 BMW 3-Series. Four years later, I am still thrilled to be driving one of the most popular cars on the road. The gas mileage is incredible and it meets the EPA estimates with ease. The hybrid system works flawlessly and I was pleasantly surprised by the acceleration and driving experience, especially when not in eco mode. The Toyota reliability is top-notch and the hybrid has been no exception. I have the fully loaded XLE model and the interior is luxurious. The navigation system is user-friendly and the push button start, sunroof, and heated seats are just a few of the expected creature comforts. Toyota uses high-end and comfortable leather in their cars. The back seat is spacious and fits a car seat nicely. While there are a few items I wish were available, such as dual power seats, memory seating, auto wipers, xenon lights, and rear sunshade, I'm really grasping at straws here! The smart key had an issue a few months ago, where the driver door would not unlock and had to be manually opened. However, the issue resolved itself after several months. Everything on this car works as it should and it is easy to take for granted. I have considered other cars, and in fact, bought a Volvo XC90 thinking I wanted more room. Thankfully, I did not sell the Camry because I hated the Volvo and sold it after a week of ownership. This is a solid car that will last forever. I have done nothing but put a set of tires on at 40,000 miles and change the oil with synthetic every 7,500. When purchased new, it was pricey at $34,500, but you can find real values in used models. Also, with gas prices much lower and likely never getting back to where they once were, I would recommend buying a hybrid only if you want to be green, not to recoup a return on your investment through gas savings, as it will take many years to do so.

    Your car has been performing exceptionally well for the past 5 years with no issues, just regular maintenance such as oil changes, filters, and tires. The original brakes have lasted an impressive 55,000 miles and are still going strong. The only minor inconvenience is the decal on the shift handle which is wearing off, as I like to keep my hand there. The car consistently achieves an impressive 40 mpg and even managed to travel from northern NJ to Washington DC to Annapolis Maryland and back on just one tank of gas, which is truly amazing. Additionally, the car handles very well in snowy conditions. The only downside is that the trunk is a bit small.
