The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

It’s concerning because I constantly need to get a new battery. The other thing is that. When I unlock my car. Either the passenger side or the drivers side doesn’t lock or unlock. It’s mostly scary for me because there are times that I’m not in the safest area and I struggle to open it manually. I also have a few other friends that have the same car as I do and same year and they are also having the same problem. And the third thing is the ac system just decided to only work when it wants to. It seems like it’s a faulty system.

Negative 2017 Toyota Camry hybrid car reviews

  1. Peyton Upton 2024-10-23

I owned a 2001 Camry XLE for 15 years and never had any problems with it. However, I found the 2006 Corolla too small and cramped for my liking, so I traded it in for a 2011 Highlander. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the Highlander due to cheap parts. Despite this, I decided to purchase a 2016 Camry Hybrid SE because of Toyota's reputation for reliability. However, I have noticed some squeaking and rattling inside the cabin, and the performance is not as good as I had hoped. The dealership technicians informed me that the dashboard parts are made of plastic, which is a common issue. I considered trading the car in for a Lexus, but the resale value was lower than expected. I am disappointed with the quality of materials used in Toyota cars, as I used to be a loyal customer. I also had to change my tires before 25k miles on my 2011 Highlander, but unfortunately, there was no warranty on those tires.

  2. Orland Wisoky 2024-09-28

I experienced a sudden drop in mpg from 40s to low 30s. Despite taking it to two different dealers, who found nothing wrong, I remain confident that there is an issue with my vehicle. As these hybrids require specialized knowledge, I will seek out a qualified mechanic to address the problem. While I am disappointed with my current situation, I am encouraged by the advancements in cold weather batteries in newer Toyota hybrids. I am confident that Toyota values its customers and will continue to improve their products.

  3. Cristian Hegmann 2024-07-15

My wife and I have been experiencing a lower MPG than the advertised 38hwy/43city in our Toyota hybrid. Despite our efforts to drive slower, we only get a range of 28 to 34.5 MPG. Although the computer indicates that we are achieving the proper MPG, the amount of fuel we fill up with at the pump proves otherwise. We are disappointed that we spent extra money on the hybrid model and feel misled. Unfortunately, Toyota corporate has not been helpful in resolving this issue. We hope that they will improve their customer service in the future. If you are considering purchasing this car, be aware that the MPG rating may not be accurate. We have decided to switch to a Tesla and will not be purchasing another Toyota in the future.

  4. Devin Hudson 2024-05-28

I recently upgraded from a 2003 Camry LE to a 2017 Camry Hybrid XLE. While the ride is a bit harsher than my previous car, I have unfortunately experienced some issues over the past few years when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse and applying the brakes. The car makes a loud burping sound, which has been getting worse. After some persistence, the Toyota dealership recognized that air bubbles were getting into the braking system, which was covered under warranty. While they did not replace the part causing the issue, they did drain and replace the fluid. Unfortunately, the problem resurfaced six months later, and despite my repeated requests, the dealership has been unresponsive. I also received a letter from Toyota about the blizzard white paint potentially cracking on the car, and the driver leather seat has already started to show signs of wear. Despite my loyalty to Toyota, having spent over $110,000 in cash on their cars and services, I am disappointed in the declining quality of their cars and customer service. As I look to replace my 2010 Rav4 Limited AWD and 2017 Camry Hybrid, I will be exploring other options.

  5. Amir Macejkovic 2024-01-22

I've always known Toyota to be one of the most long-lasting cars that can go for more than 200k miles with a strong and durable engine. When I first saw this car, it seemed okay for me to purchase, but I was still looking for a car that was better than this. That's when I took the 16 Camry Hybrid SE for a test drive and it was very quiet and smooth. I decided to purchase this car and drove it on my way. However, after a few months, my car's performance decreased and the seats became uncomfortable. I also experienced other issues with my car. When I drove at 65 mph or 70 mph on the highway, the engine did not perform well and lacked enough push on uphill roads, which resulted in more gas consumption. The suspension was also awkward and slow to adjust to cold/hot conditions. I believe the new 2018 model is a little better in terms of performance and looks, but I have not test-driven it yet. If it's the same as my current car, then I would never buy a Toyota again.

  1. Arvel Prosacco 2025-01-07

This hybrid has great mileage in a very safe and responsive car. You'll love the acceleration! It's also totally trouble-free!! The trunk is spacious and the car is very comfortable. Even if you're 6' 3

  2. Adonis Marquardt 2024-11-19

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your 2nd hybrid! With its impressive mileage, you can go 3-4 weeks before needing to fill up on gas. It's even better than the stick estimates, with 34-40 miles per gallon.

  3. Wilber Dach 2024-10-11

Buying a Toyota Camry Hybrid may seem more expensive at first, but it's definitely worth the investment! You'll get a high-quality vehicle that drives exceptionally well, and you'll save a lot of money on gas. I personally get an average of 35 mpg around town and 45 mpg on the highway!

  4. Loyal Cummings 2024-09-22

Congratulations on your purchase! It sounds like you made a great choice with your 2015 TCH XLE. I love all the features you mentioned, especially the leather interior, roof, bluetooth, and navigation. The Entune and satellite radio are also great additions. It's fantastic that the previous owner replaced the OEM Bridgestone tires with Michelins, making the car super quiet on the highway. With a 700 mile range between fillups, you can go on long trips without worrying about stopping for gas. The body side mouldings, sill guards, and splash guards are great factory installed features. The Artic Pearl paint is also a nice touch. Enjoy your new ride!

  5. Dallas McLaughlin 2024-08-19

Why doesn't everyone own a hybrid? You can get close to 500 miles on a tank full! My mechanic always gets frustrated because after changing the oil and rotating the tires, he can never find anything needing service. Even though it's 5 years old, the brakes are still like new!
