Toyota Camry hybrid problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

  • Hesitation from the Transmission While Accelerating: This is a common problem reported by Toyota Camry owners, including hybrid models. It can be caused by worn-out parts or revised software in the in-vehicle computer system.
  • Malfunctioning Oxygen Sensor Causing the Check Engine Light to Illuminate: This issue can affect the in-vehicle computer's ability to regulate the required air-to-fuel ratio for the engine, which can lead to reduced performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Improper Shifting from Transmission for High Mileage Models: This issue can affect high-mileage Toyota Camry Hybrid models and can usually be resolved by replacing the shift solenoid or re-adjusting the throttle position sensor.
  • Leak in the Power Steering Pump or Hose: This issue can affect models with a V-6 engine and can lead to reduced steering performance and increased wear on other components.

It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners, they do not necessarily affect all Toyota Camry Hybrid vehicles. Additionally, Toyota has a reputation for reliability, and many of these issues can be addressed through routine maintenance and repairs.

Toyota Camry hybrid 2007
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-07
  • VIN: 4T4BE46K77R
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Because of the sticky dash’s glare on the driver side windshield, I could not see the car ahead of me at all. I almost hit a car that was in front of me not because he had braked because we were both still in motion but the glare was directly in my line of vision. I just happened to put my hand up over the glare and saw there was actually a silver car in front of me and I was way to close to it. No accident occurred but it almost did and certainly could have injured me and/or my passengers. This has to be fixed! That scared me to death! I truly had no idea there was a car in front of me as I could NOT see it from the dash’s glare off the windshield.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 4T1BE46K97U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The problem that I have is the same as the one I years ago. There was a recall on 2007 Toyota Camrys for oil consumption. At the time I waws never getting the maintenance indicator because the engine would run low on oil before I needed an oil change. I am having the same problem again. The car is not leaking oil. It's consuming oil. I now must drive around with extra oil in the trunk in case the oil is low. I have been a Toyota owner since 1986. I have always thought of Toyota as being one of the most reliable cars on the road. I have taken the car to the dealer near me (Toyota South Morrow, GA). Of course they do not want to further investigate this problem further. But I am sure is the problem. My mechanic also agrees that this is likely the problem.? What component failed? Engine / Oil How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car could stop at any time with engine failure, blown gaskets, etc. The problem is easily reproduce every oil change. Toyota Dealership has reviewed the problem. Now the consumption is so bad I have to check the oil every 2 weeks. The low oil indicator does not come on. Is there another recall possible if this first recall doesn't fix the problem permanently.

  • Summary: The replaced dashboard ( the first dashboard was replaced due to a recall about melting dashboards) is now melting just like the first one and is causing significant glare in on the windshield. Avoided two (2) near accidents when the glare from the sun impaired my vision of the traffic in front of me.
Toyota Camry hybrid 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 4T1BF1FKXGU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: While loading groceries in my trunk, the torsion bar sheared off and broke (the hook part). It fell hard on my shoulder (fortunately not my neck or head). I have never seen steel actually break rather than bend. I tried to fix it but could not. Trunk is heavy and unstable (falls easily), as is part of car in back. Went to Toyota dealer and found out no recall, and "iffy" fix. They wanted $488.50 to try and fix. My body shop estimated $164. and purchased correct Toyota parts, followed their instructions. The bars only held for a few minutes, then they failed to hold up the trunk again. I was almost injured again with this failure, but managed to catch it in time. They refunded me $100. since they said there was no more "play" to work with. Went on social media only to find that many Toyota Camry 2016 and 2015s had torsion bar failures, with no recall. Some said that they spent over $1000. trying to fix it, but never could, no matter what dealership or body shop repaired it. Others gave up and sold it. It is not something that I can "live with". the trunk is heavy to life and unstable. Have to hold it while trying to put things in trunk. I have had 6 Toyotas in my life and 3 cars with Auto Nation, but have never had the lack of integrity, follow-through and non-solutions that I have experienced with the purchase of this car. Unlike others, I can't afford to sell/replace my car at this time, and can't live with it as is. I truly love my car, but do not feel safe using it and am totally frustrated. All I want is for Toyota and/or its mfr.) to own up to the design flaw and either fix or replace it. Note: I have photos of broken part, failure, and estimates, but couldn't get them to download onto your form. (It just kept deleting the form and having me start over). Please advise if I can send another way.

Latest negative Toyota Camry hybrid car reviews

  1. Gerardo Jacobi 2025-11-26

    Vehicle year: 2018

I had to have the entire radio replaced due to a consistent echo when speaking on the cell phone (listeners end). This is now a known problem and if you are having it, get your car repaired before your warranty expires. The Entunes/Scout navigation system has been a bit of a disappointment. It can be a bit tricky to use and is not as user-friendly as other systems I have tried. Your phone must be plugged in via USB to even use Scout if you wish to see it displayed on the screen and if you have an iPhone you can not view any other program on your phone if you want to continue to see Scout on your display screen. So if you just view a song you then have to reconnect Scout. While some reviewers have criticized it, I would suggest individuals that use navigation in their car versus Google Maps or another program to consider their options before making a decision. My son has an Accord and the Apple Play connection is so simple that I have no idea what Toyota was thinking!! I live in New England and I have not been pleased with the traction on the installed tires. I could buy snows and will next year (unless I can trade the car before then) but had hoped for more.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE that I purchased just 5 days ago. Overall, it's been a great car, but I have noticed that it makes a very loud high pitched noise when going in reverse. I took it back to the dealership and they showed me another Camry making the same noise, so it seems to be a common issue. While it's definitely annoying, I'm hopeful that Toyota corporation will respond soon. I just wanted to share my experience with you and let you know that, despite this issue, I still think it's a great car. Thanks for listening!

I have extensive experience with Toyota vehicles, having owned 11 in total, including 5 Camrys and 2 hybrids. However, my recent experience with my 11th Toyota, a Camry Hybrid, has been disappointing. Despite my familiarity with the brand, I have encountered several issues with this particular vehicle, including minor problems with the sunroof gasket and sun visor, as well as more serious issues with the Blind Spot Monitor and brakes. I have brought these issues to the attention of the dealer, but unfortunately, their service has been poor and they have been unable to provide a satisfactory solution. As someone who has driven many Hybrid Camrys as a salesman and put 70,000 miles on my own, I am confident in my ability to recognize when something is not right with the brakes. I hope that Toyota will take these issues seriously and work to improve their service and address these problems in future models.47 mpg on a 2,000 mile trip is an impressive feat. However, the safety issues such as brakes and blind spots, as well as the frequent visits to the Toyota dealer, make it not worth the trouble.

The 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid has some issues that need to be addressed. One of the main concerns is the lane departure warning (LDW) feature, which cannot be turned off completely. The surging when depressing the brake is also a problem, especially in snowy conditions. Additionally, the driver's side windshield wiper cannot be lifted, which is a major design flaw for those living in snowy climates. The buttons on the interior are also quite small and not as nice as on the 2016 Corolla. Another issue is the cheap plastic used for the bumper/fender/wheel casing, which tends to separate easily. The heating system is also weak, especially on ECO setting mode, and the side defrosters are too small to keep the windows from fogging up in temperatures below 30 degrees. Despite these issues, there are still two nice things to say about the vehicle. The fuel economy was amazing, and the stability control made for a smooth ride. It's a great vehicle for climates that don’t have snow and ice. However, if you live in that type of climate, it may not be the best choice for you. I traded the Camry Hybrid after 5 months and purchased a Nissan Rogue.

The 2022 LE hybrid Camry has a subpar suspension system compared to the SE model, which caused it to feel like it was in a wind tunnel while driving on the highway. However, upgrading the suspension system was a more economical option than trading in the car, especially since it only has 4,000 miles. Despite this disappointment, it is worth noting that the car is great overall. As a long-time Toyota owner, I have high expectations for their vehicles and I believe that this issue can be resolved with the right upgrades.

Not what you are used to from Toyota. The MPG is amazing, and it actually has a sporty look. The Camry trunk size is normal, and it doesn't feel cheap inside. The technology is simply amazing, enhancing your safety and updating the GPS maps. It's surprisingly quick from a start.

If you're considering buying a used car, the Toyota app can be a great resource. By entering the VIN, you can access all the service records completed at Toyota dealerships. Personally, I purchased my car at 260k and inspected it thoroughly (I'm a mechanic). The only issue I've encountered is a faulty tire sensor. In my opinion, asking for 270k is quite steep. While the ride may be more rigid compared to the older body style, I actually prefer it. Additionally, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the less than 5-star reviews on this car, as some people simply complain about storage compartments. It's worth noting that this year's model seems to have resolved the issue of melting dashboards (my wife's 09's dashboard is essentially flypaper). Overall, if you're in the market for a nice, cheap, and reliable used car, I would highly recommend purchasing one with good service records and high mileage without hesitation.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2007 Camry hybrid that I bought used a little over a year ago. I have to say, it's been the best car I've ever had! It's so quiet and smooth, and has all the power you'll ever need. Plus, with the CVT transmission, there's no shifting, which makes for a really comfortable ride. I know some people might think that a hybrid means no power, but I'm 51 years old and this car has as much power as any that I've ever owned. When I bought my Camry, it had 59,000 miles on it, and now it has 78,000 miles on it. I've only had one problem with it, and that was when it didn't start at 20 below zero. But other than that, it's been smooth sailing! I'm really excited to see how long my brakes last - I was told they could last between 200,000 to 300,000 miles, and so far they look great. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention - I get between 38 to 41 mpg from March through November, and about 35 to 38 mpg in the winter. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with 51,000 miles on it and it's been such a great investment. Even with 230,000 miles on it, it still drives just as well as the day I drove it off the lot. I've only had to do one repair outside of regular oil changes, which was for a switch in the hybrid system at 225,000 miles. My mechanic said that the hybrid battery was still in great shape, which was a relief. The leather seats are still in great shape and everything works perfectly. I'm hoping to get 300,000 miles out of it! Thanks for listening.

I have owned 3 Camrys and two Avalons, including a 2011 Avalon LIMITED with all the bells and whistles. I absolutely loved the Avalon, but I wasn't a fan of the mileage (23 mpg avg). However, I recently found out that the Avalon body style is changing to look like the Lexus 460 THIS YEAR (in 2 MONTHS!), and I realized that my car's value would go down about 6K to 10K this year. Luckily, the timing was perfect because my fleet manager offered me full value for trade and back of invoice for a hybrid Camry. As a result, my gas and insurance bills have dropped in half! Who could ask for anything more?
