2018 Toyota Camry hybrid problems

The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.
In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.
Etymology
The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

I TURNED OFF THE A/C TO REDUCE AMOUNT OF POWER CAR WAS USING UP IN ORDER TO HELP WITH ACCELERATION. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2019. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO 50 MPH AFTER ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES AND WAS DRIVING WITH HAZARDS ALL THE WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE SECOND TIME WHEN GETTING ON THE FREEWAY IT WAS NOT BUSY AND WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO 65 MPH, GOT IT UP TO 40 MPH FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES THEN HIT TRAFFIC AND WAS GOING ABOUT 17 MPH THEN EXITED THE FREEWAY AND TOOK THE STREETS.

I WAS GOING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AS YOU DO ON THE TURNPIKES AND PARKWAYS. THERE WAS NO WAY FOR ME TO SAFELY STOP TO TROUBLESHOOT THE SCOUTLINK. IT TAKES A GREAT DEAL OF COORDINATION TO EVEN HOOK IT UP, BUT THEN FOR IT TO STOP WORKING WHEN YOU ARE IN CONGESTED HI SPEED TRAFFIC IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY AS WELL AS OTHERS ON THE HIGHWAY. LUCKILY THE PASSENGER WAS ABLE TO GET GOOGLE MAPS ON THE PHONE TO SAFELY GUIDE US TO OUR DESTINATION.WHEN I REPORTED THE ISSUE TO TOYOTA THEY SUGGESTED I GO TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP AGREED THERE WAS A PROBLEM, AND IF I HAD AN APPLE PHONE, THEY HAD A SOLUTION. BUT ALAS I HAVE AN ANDROID, SO THEY TRIED TO GET ME TO TRADE IN MY CAR WITH A 2019, THAT HAS A DIFFERENT SYSTEM IN IT..... A WORKING GPS I HOPE! THEY WANTED ME TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $14,000. NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT CERTAINLY NOT ETHICAL FROM MY VIEWPOINT. I THEN REPORTED THE ISSUE TO TELENAV, THEY PRODUCE THE SCOUTLINK GPS. THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO TALK WITH TOYOTA. I EXPLAINED I WAS THERE ALREADY, MY SOFTWARE WAS UP-TO-DATE AND THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM AND THE ONLY SOLUTION WAS TO PURCHASE A NEW CAR OR AT MY EXPENSE INSTALL AN AFTER MARKET SYSTEM.. TELENAV TOLD ME HE COULD NOT HELP AND HAS CLOSED THE CASE FILE. I JUST THINK SOMEONE SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE SAFETY ISSUE INVOLVED HERE AND HOW TOYOTA IS NOT STANDING BEHIND ITS PRODUCT OR ITS CUSTOMER. I PURCHASED A GARMIN. I WAS UNABLE TO ATTACH MP4 VIDEOS.

I purchased our Camry XLE Hybrid at the end of December, which is probably the worst time of year for mileage for a hybrid battery and the toughest test on its road handling capability. However, it has exceeded my expectations. I primarily bought this car to be a comfortable commuter car with great gas mileage that could also transport my family of five. The mileage has averaged around 42, even in well below zero temperatures, which clearly reduce the battery efficiency. Anytime the temperature is above 40F, the mileage is outstanding, often in the 55-60mpg range on trips of 5-20 miles. Our three teenage sons fit comfortably in the back seat without any complaints. I was most impressed with how it performed on snowy and icy city streets. We own an AWD vehicle, so my expectations for this FWD vehicle were low, but it holds the road VERY well with minimal slippage, etc. The controls are easy to use once you get used to them, and the setup was also easy. My one major complaint is the same as others; the Entune system is pretty terrible and gives me an error message about half the time I get in the car. I contacted Toyota Customer Service, which could not figure it out and eventually told me it was not guaranteed that my iPhone 6S was compatible, which I found a little ridiculous. The Scout GPS system has never worked. Toyota would have been much smarter to simply have ApplePlay and AndroidPlay so we could mimic what our phones already do well. I would absolutely buy this vehicle again.
-
The navigation system for the 2018 Camry Hybrid is only available through the Toyota Entunes 3.0 App, which may not be compatible with all smartphones. Before purchasing the vehicle, I would recommend fully testing the navigation system. However, other than that, the vehicle is great!

I have been a proud owner of the Camry Hybrid for over two years now. Although the brakes have been a bit wonky, the car has performed very well overall. In hindsight, I should have test-driven the exact car we purchased before taking delivery. Unfortunately, the brakes were not operating properly when we drove off, and the dealer refused to take responsibility for it. Lesson learned - always test drive the exact vehicle before taking delivery. An update on my review: I have had the car for over a year now, and it continues to be a wonderful car, except for the brakes. The brakes severely grab at low speeds, making it difficult to smoothly glide to a stop. This can be quite uncomfortable for passengers, and even dangerous for children. I took the car to the dealer, but they said that the brakes were working as designed. Despite many complaints on Toyota Owners websites and even to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota Customer Service claimed that mine was the only complaint they had ever received. Overall, the car is great, but the brakes could use some improvement. The vehicle we test drove at the dealer did not show the problem, but our car came from another dealer. Although we found the Toyota app Entune 3.0 to be a joke as a navigation aid, we are happy with using our stand-alone GPS. We are pleased to say that this is perhaps the most quiet car in its class and price range. While we were unimpressed with the 2017 Camry Hybrid, we are very happy with the 2018 model, except for the brakes. It is much quieter than the Accord or the Kia and Hyundai hybrids. The Camry floats over road bumps like a much more expensive car. The hybrid system runs flawlessly from gas to battery with almost no engine noise. We have been averaging 53.5 MPG plus (I am a conservative driver), and it seems to be improving. Front seat comfort is very good. After over 18,000 miles, our overall gas mileage exceeds 57 mpg. Although brake grabbing problems remain a serious negative, we are confident that Toyota will remedy the issue soon.

I've had this car for almost a month now and I'm really enjoying it! There are a lot of great things about it, like the amazing fuel economy - even though it has a small gas tank, I've only had to fill it up twice in the past month and I'm getting around 48 MPG! The car also drives really smoothly and handles curves with ease. Plus, the pre-collision warning, LDA, BSM, and rear traffic alerts all work really well. Of course, there are a couple of things that could be improved. For example, the upgrades can be a bit pricey - I added a sunroof with some additional features and it did add up quite a bit. Also, setting up the navigation can be a bit of a pain, and the maps are a bit outdated - it doesn't even show my house address, which is 3 years old! But overall, I'm really happy with my purchase.

To get a great deal on this car, I highly recommend using the internet sales department. It's also a good idea to do your homework on the car and visit your local dealer a few times before making a decision. Make sure to have your dealer set up your entertainment/navigation system, as I had some trouble with it even though I consider myself tech-savvy. However, what I love most about this car is how comfortable it is - no more aching back or hips on long drives! Plus, the safety features are really impressive. The car automatically decelerates when you get too close to another car while using cruise control, and stops on its own if traffic is stopped. It's pretty cool! Although I'm not a fan of the cloth inserts in the seats, the instrument panel is well-located and there's plenty of storage space. The trunk is huge, so no worries about fitting all your luggage. I've even received compliments on the car! Overall, it's a practical choice for anyone needing space and doing a lot of driving.

UPDATE: December 4th, 2020: I am now into my 3rd year with the car and it has not had any mechanical issues and is holding up well. The infotainment system has been greatly improved with several updates, although it's still not very seamless. Despite this, I have softened somewhat to the initial frustration and will probably hold onto this car for another year before considering a new one. Toyota's warranty is now only 2 years and most others are longer, which is something to consider. UPDATE: December 4th, 2019: I've had the car now for 2 years and some things are really better. It's comfortable and gets great mileage. The infotainment system has finally been upgraded with new firmware and Apple compatibility, which are both great additions. Although the updates are sometimes unreliable, I still get auto upgrades and it's much better than when I purchased it. Outside the technology, the car is fine, safe and comfortable. I will be looking for my next vehicle in about a year and will keep my options open. While Toyota could have done a better job handling the initial problems, I still have faith in the brand. ORIGINAL REVIEW: As a several decade long Toyota Camry fan, I immediately jumped on the bandwagon and purchased this car in December as they were coming available. However, for my first time ever, this Toyota was not ready for prime time.Several people have mentioned that the infotainment system, which also controls the navigation (an $1800.00 mandatory option), is useless. This also affects all Bluetooth and phone operations, which won't work, especially if you have an Apple iPhone. Unfortunately, the car is barely compatible with anything Apple. Living in a rural area, I don't get data well or at all in certain areas, rendering the navigation inoperable when it even works at all. However, the car rides well and is undoubtedly safe and reliable. Since I bought this top-of-the-line model for its mileage and 'toys', I'm disappointed in both the car and Toyota, who will not acknowledge their mistakes. It is the only Camry that they went to the Scout system, which is the worst. The mileage claim is 49, but that's only for the LE model. This car gets 39-41, which is terrible for a hybrid. I've talked to the dealer, and they 'try' to care, but they don't. At this point, I'll hold on for a year to get some value and then move on to a different brand. I'm disappointed in this model of what was a favorite car of mine. I'm so sorry I turned in my 2013 on this horrible 'upgrade'.

Other reviewers and pro reviews have already covered the actual drive of this hybrid sedan, which is very efficient. While it may not be the most powerful or super handling, it gets the job done. However, I noticed that the top of the line Camry Hybrid XLE lacks a few features that many of us would appreciate. For example, A/C ventilated seats are not available in any Camry model, which can be a deal breaker for those of us living in climates with miserable summer heat or humidity. Additionally, the Camry Hybrid XLE does not come with native navigation, and instead requires you to hook up your own smartphone and use the Scout Toyota application. This seems like a cost-saving measure that is not up to par with other top of the line mid-sized sedan hybrids, such as Hyundai or Kia, which come with native navigation and car play applications for smartphone hook up. Despite these shortcomings, the Camry Hybrid XLE does have a few nice, advanced features, such as inductive smartphone charging, and it is a much newer design than the Fusion, which has been around for six years. The Camry, along with the new Honda Accord hybrid (when it comes out soon), and the new Kia and Hyundai models from last year, are all great options to consider.Hey Toyota, I was really interested in the Camry XLE, but I was a bit disappointed with some of the features. The salesperson suggested I check out the Avalon, which is a bit more expensive, but still within my budget. I did some research and found that the Avalon Limited Hybrid is only around $6K more than the Camry XLE. While it's a bigger car, I'm not sure I need something that large. Plus, I'm concerned about fuel efficiency and insurance costs. I appreciate the $4K rebate you're offering this month, but I think I'll have to pass on the Camry. Thanks anyway!

The vehicle is equipped with a range of useful features, however, the navigation and entertainment apps are currently not functioning properly. Despite attempts to resolve the issue, Toyota has been unable to provide a solution that is compatible with the latest Apple IOS phones. Unfortunately, the current workaround suggested by Toyota involves using a connected phone to operate the apps, which can be distracting and unsafe while driving. It is important to prioritize safety while using these embedded apps.

Hello! We understand that some Toyota customers have experienced difficulties with the GPS feature when using Scout GPS Link & Entune. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you're looking for a car with reliable GPS and technology features, we recommend checking out the Honda Accord. Thank you for considering Toyota!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2018 Toyota Camry XLE Hybrid. I've driven it for 2,000 miles and have been averaging 36 MPG. While I was hoping for 46 MPG, I'm still happy with the car overall. I took it to the dealership to have it checked out, but they didn't find any errors. They did mention that the cold weather might be affecting the fuel efficiency. While I'm disappointed with the 20% loss in fuel efficiency, I'm still enjoying my car. Thanks for listening!
