The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

BOTH INCIDENCES HAVE OCCURED WHILE GETTING ONTO A FREEWAY AND PRESSING GAS PEDAL TO MERGE ONTO THE FREEWAY. THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE BOTH TIMES WAS ABOVE 90 DEGREES AND THE CAR HAD BEEN AT REST FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR. I TURNED OFF THE A/C TO REDUCE AMOUNT OF POWER CAR WAS USING UP IN ORDER TO HELP WITH ACCELERATION. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2019. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO 50 MPH AFTER ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES AND WAS DRIVING WITH HAZARDS ALL THE WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE SECOND TIME WHEN GETTING ON THE FREEWAY IT WAS NOT BUSY AND WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO 65 MPH, GOT IT UP TO 40 MPH FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES THEN HIT TRAFFIC AND WAS GOING ABOUT 17 MPH THEN EXITED THE FREEWAY AND TOOK THE STREETS.

THERE WERE NO WARNINGS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF MECHANICAL ISSUES. THE DRIVER RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE IT AGAIN THE ISSUE DID NOT RE-APPEAR. DRIVING IN THE SNOW / ICE THIS WINTER WAS DANGEROUS AS THE BREAKS LOCKED UP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS RESULTING IN SKIDDING/SLIDING. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND, LIGHTLY APPLYING THE BREAKS, OR 'SLOW BREAKING'. YOU LIGHTLY APPLY THE BREAK AND THE CAR IS SLOWING DOWN IMMEDIATELY AS IF YOUR TRYING TO AVOID A COLLISION.

ALTHOUGH THE DASH WARNING SAID FOR ME TO SHIFT INTO PARK I DID NOT DO IT THAT INSTANCE. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND THE VEHICLE STARTED MOVING WITH THE ENGINE OFF. THERE WAS NO INCLINE OR HILL. I TRIED THIS SEVERAL TIMES, AND EVEN WITH THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE, ENGINE OFF, FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, THE VEHCILE STARTED MOVING IN REVERSE, EVEN STARTING TO GAIN SPEED. MY WIFE HAS MY OLD 2015 CAMRY HYBRID AND TRIED THIS EXPERIMENT. THAT TOYOTA DID NOT DO WHAT THE 2018 DID.

THE BRAKING SYSTEM IN MY CAR, BRAKED, THEN THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AS BRAKES WERE APPLIED. IN ADDITION A VERY LOUD NOISE OCCURRED INSIDE THE VEHICLE WHICH WAS VERY STARTLING. MY VEHICLE ENDED UP UNDER THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME. THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AFTER THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING SYSTEM CAME ON AND THE LOUD ALARM IN THE INTERIOR WAS NOT WHAT HAD HAPPENED WITH THE SYSTEM BEFORE. ONE TIME BEFORE THE BRAKING SYSTEM APPLIED ITSELF AND THE DASHBOARD LIGHT CAME ON AND I SEEM TO RECALL THERE WAS A BEEP OR SOME SOUND THAT WAS VERY BRIEF.

Despite Toyota HQ's initial refusal to fix the issue, I have had the service department look at the problem twice. While they have claimed that the noise is common, I strongly disagree. The clunky sound that occurs while backing up and parking in a parking lot is not normal. As a customer of Toyota of Orange CA, I expect a resolution to this issue as soon as possible.

    I purchased my new 2018 Cambry on June 22, 2018. Unfortunately, the GPS did not work when we picked up the car. We were initially told that the issue was due to our mobile phone not being up to date and that the dealer's phone did not have the proper password for our unit. Despite purchasing the latest smart phone, the issue persisted. After returning to the dealer, we were only given the phone number for tech support. My wife has spent 15 to 20 hours trying to resolve the issue, but to no avail. We even had to purchase a second smart phone so that we could both use the car. We later discovered that after three years, Entune charges for their navigation system. After researching online, we found that there were hundreds of similar complaints. Unfortunately, Toyota has not yet taken any action to resolve this issue. Today, my dealer, Vaden Toyota in Sylacauga, Al, told me to bring the car in again and he would have someone look at it. If we had known that the navigation system required smart phones to operate and would be so difficult to set up, we would not have purchased the car.

It's been a bit frustrating dealing with Toyota and Apple, as they haven't been able to provide a clear timeline for when it will be fixed. It's definitely a letdown, as I would have considered other Hybrid vehicles if I had known about this issue beforehand. However, it's worth noting that the Scout Navigation System requires your phone to be plugged in, which can be inconvenient if you don't have your phone with you or don't have a smartphone. I highly recommend purchasing the extended warranty for bumper-to-bumper coverage for many years to come.

    My 2007 Camry Hybrid was a very reliable car that offered good mileage. The 2018 model, however, is even better with a host of safety features. The design is also a major improvement, as it has eliminated the blandness typically associated with a Camry. I'm happy to report that after 27,000 miles, there have been no issues. Even after 31,000 miles, the Camry Hybrid is still trouble-free and is getting over 50 mpg, exceeding the EPA rating of 46. After 50,000 miles, it's still trouble-free, with great mileage and just routine maintenance. At 55,000 miles, I'm still trouble-free and happy to be getting 48 to 50 mpg despite the $5 gas. At 60,000 miles, there are still no issues to report. At 65,000 miles, the mpg averages 49 to 50 and there are still no issues to report. I'm just doing oil/filter changes as recommended every 5,000 miles.

    I recently purchased the 2018 Camry Hybrid (2.5 L) based on the recommendation of Consumer Reports, and I must say it was one of the best decisions I've made in my 60 years of car ownership. The car is incredibly comfortable, has ample power for city driving, and comes with most safety features as standard, except for rear cross traffic warning and blind side warning. Although it may not be as luxurious as a Lexus, the interior is of high quality and built to last. What I love most about this car is its convenience and spaciousness, especially with the dual climate controls, which is a significant upgrade from my 2004 Accord. I also appreciate the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine and hybrid efficiency, and I hope Toyota continues to steer clear of the unfortunate trend of turbocharged engines that other Japanese manufacturers are adopting. A year and a half later, I still stand by my initial claims. The odometer reads about 16,000 miles, and the only expenses I've incurred are regular maintenance costs and a replacement of windshield wipers, in addition to the much smaller gasoline expenses of a hybrid vehicle.
