2004 Toyota Mr2 problems
The Toyota MR2 is a line of two-seater, mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports cars, manufactured in Japan and marketed globally by Toyota from 1984 until 2007 over three generations: W10 (1984–1989), W20 (1989–1999) and W30 (1999–2007). It is Japan's first rear mid-engined production car.
Conceived as a small, economical and sporty car, the MR2 uses simple but effective design elements, including an inline-four engine, transversely mounted in front of the rear axle, four-wheel disc brakes, and fully independent coilover suspension – MacPherson strut fronts and Chapman strut rears.
The name MR2 stands for either "mid-ship run-about 2-seater" or "mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-seater". In French-speaking markets, the vehicle was renamed Toyota MR because the abbreviation "MR2" sounds like the profanity "merde" when spoken in French.

Common 2004 Toyota Mr2 problems
The Toyota MR2, a classic sports car produced by Toyota, is known for its mid-engine layout and handling capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems, particularly when it has a high mileage.
- Automatic Transmission Shifting Issues: One of the most common issues with the Toyota MR2 is its automatic transmission not shifting correctly at high mileage, typically over 125,000 miles. This problem can be solved without necessarily replacing the entire transmission. Instead, the shift solenoid may need to be replaced, or the throttle position sensor may need repair.
- Ignition Key Functionality: Another problem that tends to occur at over 100,000 miles is that the ignition key may not work as well. This issue can be resolved by simply replacing the ignition key.
- Oversteering: The Toyota MR2 is also known for its tendency to oversteer, which can lead to dangerous results. This issue is harder to solve and requires drivers to know how to prevent oversteering from happening.
- Engine Problems: Some MR2 owners have reported engine problems, such as the engine consuming oil excessively. This is a known fault, and Toyota has offered an extended warranty on the engines to address this issue. If you encounter this problem, it is advisable to take your MR2 to a Toyota dealership for a thorough inspection and any necessary repairs.
- Rust Protection: As with many Toyota models, the MR2 has poor rust protection, particularly in the sills and wheel arches. If you're considering purchasing a used MR2, it's essential to check these areas for rust damage. Additionally, it's worth checking the overall condition of the car, as many MR2s are now approaching 20 years old.
- Transmission and Drivetrain: The MR2's transmission and drivetrain can be challenging to bleed, and the engines are known for their oil consumption. If you encounter these issues, it's recommended to take your MR2 to a Toyota dealership or a reputable garage for a thorough inspection and any necessary repairs.
In summary, while the Toyota MR2 is a fun and capable sports car, it's essential to be aware of these common problems, particularly if you're considering purchasing a used model with high mileage. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from becoming significant problems and ensure your MR2 remains a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive.
