2022 Bmw Ix problems
The BMW iX is a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer BMW. It was unveiled in concept form named Vision iNext at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, and then as fully production-ready in November 2020. The iX is the first purpose-built electric vehicle by BMW since the i3 from 2013, and the fourth BMW i sub-brand model.
The iX nameplate was chosen to signify the model's position at the top of the electric i line-up and its role in showcasing technology as it uses the new fifth-generation version of BMW's electric drive system, and also offers high levels of autonomous and connected technology.
Overview
History
The BMW iNext was first announced by BMW in March 2016 as the "new spearhead of innovation and technology" with a launch goal of early in the next decade.
The BMW Vision iNext was unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Referred as "Project i 2.0", the Vision iNext was developed to address key questions for the future of motoring, with a focus on electrification, connectivity and autonomy. It was an SUV roughly similar in size to the BMW X5, although it was substantially bigger inside due to its EV architecture, with front and rear motors and underfloor batteries. BMW confirmed that it would use BMW's fifth-generation electric powertrain, 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds and range of 380 mi (612 km). The level of autonomy the production version would offers depended on regulations and infrastructure.
The production variant, the BMW iX, was officially announced in November 2020.

Common 2022 Bmw Ix problems
The BMW iX, a fully electric SUV introduced in 2022, has been lauded for its luxurious trappings and impressive performance. However, it has also faced a few common problems based on complaints from its owners.
- Cruise Control Software Error: More than 11,000 BMW iX xDrive50 and iX M60 vehicles from the 2022 to 2024 model years are under recall due to a cruise control software error.
- Airbag Warning Light Malfunction: The BMW iX has experienced recalls related to the airbag warning light malfunctioning. This issue may prevent the airbag malfunction indicator light and display message from illuminating in the event of a problem with the airbag due to incorrect software. Reprogramming the control unit should fix the issue.
- GPS and Carplay Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the GPS system and Carplay freezing or not working properly. This can result in the driver being unable to use the GPS or radio, and may require disconnecting and reconnecting the Bluetooth to resolve the issue.
- Drivetrain Warning Message: A few owners have reported receiving a drivetrain warning message, which may indicate an issue with the vehicle's propulsion system. The cause and resolution of this issue are not specified in the search results.
- Battery Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Software: The high voltage battery electronic control unit (ECU) software in the BMW iX may have issues that affect the vehicle's performance. This issue may require a software update to rectify.
These common problems with the BMW iX are based on complaints from owners and recall information. While these issues may affect the vehicle's performance and safety, BMW has taken steps to address them through recalls and software updates.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
- VIN: WB523CF04NC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Intermittent and sudden "Changed Steering Effort" warning on dash every 2-3 vehicle starts. Steering effort is very noticeably increased. This is a known issue among all BMW iX owners, easily inspected, and BMW has swept this problem under the rug for too long and quietly replaced all the steering racks when the warning pops up. Fortunately for many, they're under the factory warranty. Unfortunately for me, I have had my car less than 2 years, and barely over the factory warranty on mileage. However, it is VERY concerning as many owners are getting their steering racks changed out at even under 10k miles. Yes, this can happen suddenly on the freeway at speed and I do believe is a safety issue. The problem can easily be reproduced and is a very typical problem on BMW iX's all over the US and globally as many owners on forums have been asking for help on this issue. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer and their fix is to replace the entire steering rack. Yes, intermittent warnings. I hope NHTSA can get to the root of this and have BMW issue a recall for this steering rack issue, as our cars are very heavy and fast and if there are any sudden failures, it can be dangerous and fatal at highway speeds.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
- VIN: WB523CF02NC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering rack on my under 2 year old BMW iX with ~21k miles needed to be replaced. The vehicle displayed an intermittent warning about increased steering effort and to contact my service center. Upon taking it in they diagnosed it as a steering rack issue. Before taking it in, internet searches suggest many other owners of 2022 BMW iXs are having similar failures for the last several months. Steering failure could easily cause a crash and significant injury or death if it happened at the wrong time. Having the rack fail on a car this new is worrisome.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
- VIN: WB523CF08NC
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I am writing to report a serious safety concern regarding the 2022 BMW iX, specifically related to the malfunction of its safety system due to the software provided by Green Hill Software. This issue has resulted in multiple instances where the safety system of the vehicle locked up, putting drivers, passengers, and other road users at significant risk of accidents. On several occasions, while operating my 2022 BMW iX, I have experienced sudden and unexpected failures in the safety system. These failures have occurred during critical moments of driving, where the vehicle's safety systems are relied upon to prevent accidents and protect occupants. The incidents have almost led to accidents, causing severe distress and endangerment to myself and others on the road. Upon investigation, it has been identified that the fault lies within the software provided by Green Hill Software, which is integral to the functioning of the vehicle's safety systems. Despite attempts to rectify the issue through software updates and dealership interventions, the problem persists, posing an ongoing threat to the safety of BMW iX drivers and the public at large. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action to address the safety concerns associated with the software provided by Green Hill Software in the 2022 BMW iX. It is imperative that swift action is taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all motorists and pedestrians affected by this issue. Furthermore, I request that NHTSA liaise with BMW and Green Hill Software to implement a comprehensive solution to rectify the software-related safety issues in the affected vehicles promptly. This may involve recalls, software updates, or other corrective measures necessary to mitigate the risks posed by the faulty software.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
- VIN: WB523CF09NC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I a not certain how to report this incident but I received a text alert from a local car dealership that there was a vehicle recall of my front grill due to failure of a device that is supposed to unfreeze ice from that part which is experiencing a failure. Since this is a major BMW Dealership, I did not question the validity, I merely scheduled the repair. When I arrived there was no promised loaner car and I was angered that I had cleared my busy morning and there was no way I could also clear my afternoon to wait for my car so I ordered a Lyft to take me home. Then, I became suspicious when I was informed that they did an inspection of my 2022 vehicle and presented a list of repairs, I did no sign any authorizations allowing them to do anything to my vehicle. I told them to do only the recall repair and then I looked up my vin and became aware that there was no safety recall outstanding on my vehicle and never anything concerning icing of the grill. Now I need to pick my vehicle up and I am i fear of what they may have done to my vehicle.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-28
- VIN: WB523CF04NC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Power loss, dash went black and loss of drive power. This failure has occurred twice and I more fully documented each failure to BMW. When was the last time this occurred? August 28th 2. GPS error, vehicle speed limit showed 25 under all conditions while actual speed showed correctly. When was the last time this occurred? Early August 3. Side collision system failures. Either fails entirely and indicates no vehicles on either side or will randomly indicate the presence of vehicles when they are not there. Other times it will function correctly. This has happened multiple times now. When was the last time this occurred? October 7th 4. Driver assistance errors pop as a multiple page error on the infotainment for no apparent reason a. On 217 an error message was displayed on the screen and heads up display saying Driver Assistance Limited. The message was longer but that’s all I could read driving in traffic. Conditions could not be more ideal and literally just left service with a freshly washed vehicle so not sure what the failure could be. I think this message is meant to occur if the cameras aren’t working or are obstructed by dirt, extreme weather etc. This message will display if the system has anything that prevents parameters from being met, this is something that will come up from time to time. 5. Assisted driving turned itself on and set a speed of 37 MPH When was the last time this occurred? August 5th 6. Automatic window stopped working despite the activation point still showing setup and active. Checked settings and tried it a few times and it just stopped working but settings look correct. It had previously been working. When was the last time this occurred? In the last week. 7. BMW assistant failures on about 3 of 4 commands. Only the mic button will activate the assistant as the voice activation stopped working. Making calls, navigation, turning off steering wheel heat, turning on massage seat all failed 1-3

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-12
- VIN: WB523CF0XNC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I was traveling on 6/12 at approximately 4:30 AM at around 65 MPH when I received a warning message something to the effect of “emergency system malfunction - vehicle will now stop”. I lost all throttle and the vehicle slowed to a stop. Due to the lack of other vehicles present at the time, I was able to get to the side of the road before the vehicle completely stopped. I restarted the vehicle and it seemed to operate normally, but I took the vehicle to the service center to diagnose the problem because it could have caused a serious accident in heavier traffic. When I checked the vehicle in, the service advisor stated that it seemed like a serious issue and they would want to get BMW involved directly, but when they had it “ready” for me two days later, all they had done is attempt to pull trouble codes and couldn’t tell me if it was safe to drive or not. They did provide me a loaner at the time and I have attempted to get the dealership to diagnose this issue, but to date they have not provided me with any information about it after having the vehicle for about one week. I contacted BMW North America Customer Relations and explained the problems with the dealership and asked about the mechanical failure and whether I should be concerned/take it to another dealership/etc. They stated that they don’t get involved with the dealership service departments and were generally unhelpful. I stressed that this could be a serious safety issue, but I didn’t get the sense they were interested in getting to the bottom of what happened and whether it was in fact a serious safety issue.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-14
- VIN: WB523CF04NC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 BMW IX. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V079000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that an unknown dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-15
- VIN: WB523CF08NC
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: 1. The rear wiper has a frame made of plastic, with a simple T shaped connector. I have found it laying in my driveway 4 times now, and have only owned this 2022 BMW iX since November. If there is any resistance at all when you turn the wiper on, like some snow or frost, the T shaped connector will un-click, the wiper will tip sideways, and fall off the car. This could happen at speed if you engage the wiper with ANYTHING on your back window and could fly into the car behind you (have not experienced this yet...). 2, The Adaptive Braking can engage in very weird situations. Driving south on Rt 3 in New Hampshire (the Everett Turnpike, I think it's called) after dark between exit 5 and exit 4, I was in the middle of Rt 3's three lanes with NO traffic around me at all. The iX decelerated suddenly by about 15-20 mph, so thank god no vehicles behind me! Realized at that point what had happened - Rt 3 curves left at this point as you are heading south. At this spot, the Exit 4 ramp goes straight off the road at an angle. The ramp is short and quickly comes to a set of traffic lights. This traffic light is right at the height of Rt 3, as the ramp dips somewhat for this exit, so the traffic lights are at the height of car brake lights at this point. The traffic lights were red and there were 6 or 7 cars braked showing red brake lights. I believe the BMW iX adaptive braking incorrectly engaged at this point, thinking this was traffic that was on Rt 3 and that the BMW iX needed to stop for it. This traffic was actually 300 - 400 yards down the ramp, but the adaptive braking engaged strongly to 'avoid a collisioin'.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-06
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WB523CF09NC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: This vehicle was involved in a collision, none of the safety features worked. The front end collision warning did not go off. The automatic emergency braking did not engage. The Car jolted forward after the collision and did not stop, potentially risking another collision. The SOS or emergency collision BMW assist was not activated, there was no call from anyone from BMW after the accident. No warning lights or collision indicators went off prior to collision as they should have. This vehicle is puts the safety of others at risk if it fails to stop after a collision (regardless of the speed of impact) as well as quick acceleration post collision.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-28
- VIN: WB523CF08NC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: It took them 6 weeks to replace the battery component that was part of the recall. My car was unable to be driven during this timeframe. Under my state lemon laws I am eligible for a car buyback from BMW as it was out of service over 30 days. I registered a request for this through BMW corporate and it was denied by them.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 BMW IX. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V541000 (Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated the battery power capacity had decreased. Additionally, the contact noticed a burning odor inside the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was approximately 3,900. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-19
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WB523CF00NC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The rear parking assist function malfunctioned. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The car was expected to reverse park itself. Instead it never stopped going backwards an crashed into the wall at the end of the parking area. It was not able to recognize the presence of a wall (approx height 3 feet) and crashed into it. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The BMW engineers stated that the were not able to reproduce the problem in their tests. I was told the 'black box' in the car was not able to show that there was any malfunction and it might be possible that I had pressed the accelerator manually resulting in the crash. However, I know this is not true. So in the end it became my word against theirs. No engineer ever called me to get more details about the crash - like how high the wall was, how much distance was there between the car and the wall when I engaged the auto-park feature etc. It appears to me that they were not really interested in investigating the incident but simply wanted to put it as a user error. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The BMW engineers have claimed that they have inspected the car and its park assist systems. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no warnings. The reverse parking system worked perfectly fine when the parking lot had a full wall at the rear. It only malfunctioned when the wall height was partial (3 feet in this case)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-10
- VIN: WB523CF03NC
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I have had 6-8 instances where the car "takes off" and accelerates without my touching the accelerator. It is not full-acceleration but strong enough that if a car was immediately in front of me - I might hit it. Hitting the brakes stops the acceleration and the car then drives normally. In all cases - the cruise control has been "off" and the unintended acceleration has occurred just after first starting up.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
- VIN: WB523CF01NC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 BMW IX. The contact stated that three weeks after purchasing the vehicle, he was informed by the dealer that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V541000 (Electrical System) and that parts to do the recall repair was unavailable. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and remained in their possession. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-16
- VIN: WB523CF04NC
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Under "B" drive mode which is the "one pedal driving" with automatic regenerative braking, occasionally when I release the pedal completely expecting the vehicle to slow down/stop, the vehicle instead will lunge forward. This has happened twice, thankfully at low speeds in a parking lot where I was able to slam on the brakes. On BMW forums, there are also others with the same issue so I figure it's not a fluke and I hope BMW addresses it as it is a bit scary and I have an infant in the car most of the time.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-01
- VIN: WB523CF07NC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On September 1st 2022, under heavy rain, the rear bumper fell partially, and the part that was still attached to the car dragged it along with the cables, camera, sensors, etc. The car only notified a sensor cleaning malfunction. I kept driving when saw the sensor warning. There was no noise or indication of anything going on in the car. It was when another driver made gestures for me to stop, and told me that my bumper was dragging, when I learned the situation. The safety of others was at risk because only a small plastic pin was holding it, a tail light went God knows where and it could had hit other drivers in the highway. I don't know if the problem has been or not reproduced by BMW. I do know that Tesla cars, that have the same type of engine, had identified this problems in their cars. BMW USA was notified and they deny it. They allege that it was a "collision" what provoked this. There wasn't any collision, it was just water from the rain. This car has video capability for theft and collision and in its memory there is nothing about a collision or the event of the bumper falling. The theft/collision system is in fact working because when the towing service came to pick it up, it registered theft pictures. I went to the police first to make the report. This is the report number: Q2022-5-050-8951, the agent was Pablo A Morales #29480 at Mayaguez Police Station in Puerto Rico. Their phone number is (787) 832-9696. From there, the vehicle was sent directly to the BMW service center. They inspected it, in fact, they still have it. The car insurance representative just inspected it as well, yesterday morning. The only message that turned on was the sensor cleaning one, since it was raining, I assumed it was due to that. The message kept appearing. There were no other symptoms or messages.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-17
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 BMW IX. The contact stated that under certain circumstances, while driving approximately 65 MPH, the automatic safety feature indicated a false emergency stop. The contact stated that while at a stop light, the vehicle made a false detection and the Interrupted Assisted Driving warning light illuminated indicating that the contact’s hands were not on the steering wheel; however, the contact stated that his hands were positioned at the bottom of the steering wheel. The contact then stated that he had to increase acceleration to override the system when the vehicle then engaged the automatic braking system. The contact stated that he navigated the vehicle off the road to shut off the engine. The contact then stated that he was able to reboot the system and took the vehicle to the dealer where the assisted plus was disengaged, and the contact was advised to call the NHTSA Hotline. The contact stated that the dealer was not equipped to diagnose the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
- VIN: WB523CF07NC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I ordered BMW ix50 in 10/1/21, got delivered on 05/20/22. Only after 39 days on 06/08/22 and about 1000 miles BMW stopped running and I called BMW roadside assistance to take to the dealership. The car was “fixed” and picked-up back from the dealership on 07/06/22. The reason was given from Gwinnett dealer that “software upgrade” needed and “was fixed”. Again on 7/15 evening when I was coming after getting battery 80% charged, I was driving and the car suddenly died while in motion. I tried to restart the engine but I couldn’t start the engine. Left side hazard light also stopped blinking. (Videos available) I could have died by the traffic in this scenario. Many people can be easily at high risk due to this unmanageable BMW problem and can even die. BMW dealer text me on 07/19/22 that “BMW has let us know that they want us to replace the Electronic Memory Module on your vehicle. That part is coming in from Germany. As of today there is not an estimate for when the part should come in.” So, do BMW knows what is actually wrong and how long it will take it fix brand new BMW ix EV? This is the story of the famous German carmaker. (1) Why car was released on 07/6/22 when “fix” was not done right? (2) How the brand new car engine die suddenly while in motion? (2) Do BMW understand the risk factor of these kind of incidents? (3) Why BMW introduced ix-50 EV model in USA market when the car is complete disaster? (4) Both the times of breakdown, we do not have a loaner’s car, even after spending $110,000! I felt that I became guinea pig for the inefficiency and lake of expertly of BMW in EV. My friends and everyone trust in BMW is shaky. I booked ix last year, because we trusted BMW, we were thrilled, and this supposed to be gift for our someone. Bad performance on ix EV can is not good for already declining sales of regular BMW products and EVs.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle! It sounds like it's very powerful and quick for an SAV, and has a great range of 300+ miles even in cold weather. It's great to hear that you've driven 10k miles in 6 months of ownership and haven't found any downsides.

What an awesome SUV! I absolutely love it and would buy it today if only a trailer hitch was available. I really want to take my bikes along with me, especially for a car at this price. It's surprising that no review points this out.
