Common 2013 Lexus Rx450h problems

The Lexus RX450h 2013 is generally considered a reliable vehicle, with a Reliability Rating of 4.0 out of 5.0, ranking it 1st out of 14 for luxury midsize SUVs. However, there are some common issues reported by owners that are worth discussing.

  • Exhaust: The exhaust system, including muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and leaks, has been reported as a trouble spot by some owners.
  • Brakes: Some owners have reported issues with the brakes, including problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the actuator, which may require replacement.
  • Electrical accessories: Non-engine electrics, such as the media system and windows, may become faulty in the RX 450h. While Lexus has not issued a recall for these issues, an auto electrician can diagnose and repair the problem.
  • Body hardware: The rear hatch has been reported to not always work properly, with some owners reporting issues with the hydraulic lifters.
  • Steering and suspension: The RX 450h is a heavy vehicle, which can put pressure on the suspension, particularly the shock absorbers. Worn shock absorbers need to be replaced, and any loose parts should be tightened if there is a leak in the air suspension system.
  • In-car electronics: The energy monitor, which shows at any given time what's being driven by or powered by what, is accessed through a remote touch mouse style controller. Some owners have reported issues with this system .

It is important to note that the 2013 Lexus RX450h has no reported problems, and the average annual repair cost is $540, which is lower than average for the segment. However, these common issues are worth considering when purchasing a used RX 450h.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-14
  • VIN: JTJZB1BA6D2
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WHEN PULLING OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, MY HUSBAND SLOWED DOWN TO TURN RIGHT. UPON TURNING INTO THE MIDDLE LANE, ALL SIDE AIRBAGS, FRONT AND BACK BLEW. WHILE THE INTENSITY FROM THE BLAST ROCKED THE CAR, THERE WAS NOTHING NEARBY THAT HE HIT. NO VISIBLE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE CAR, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF, THE AIR BAGS. WE HAD NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THIS CAR, AND IN FACT, HAD JUST BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP THE SATURDAY PRIOR GETTING A STATE INSPECTION AND A NEW BATTERY. THE SERVICE REP EVEN MENTIONED HOW IMPRESSED HE WAS THAT THIS WAS THE CAR'S FIRST BATTERY IN 7 YEARS AND OVER 90K MILES. HE TOLD US THE CAR LOOKED GREAT AND TO KEEP IT UP! AND THEN TUESDAY CAME AROUND AND THE AIR BAG MALFUNCTION OCCURRED. NOT ONLY WAS THIS AN EXTREMELY SCARY EVENT, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN THAT MUCH WORSE HAD MY 2 MONTH OLD SON BEEN IN THE CAR AT THE TIME. WE ARE THANKFUL NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY HURT. HOWEVER, THE STORY ONLY GETS WORSE WITH LEXUS'S (TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS) LACK OF RESPONSE. 4/14 ' CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP 4/16 ' DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDS CALL CORPORATE AS IT WAS A MALFUNCTION ' I CALL CORPORATE 4/20 ' CALL CORPORATE ASKING WHERE MY 24 HOUR CALL BACK WAS 4/21 - CALL AGAIN ASKING WHERE MY 24 HOUR CALL BACK WAS 4/22 ' FINALLY GET CALL. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-21
  • VIN: JTJBC1BA0D2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY 2013 RX450H' ABS LIGHT SUDDENLY TURNED ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN A LOCAL ROAD. ALONG WITH THE ABS LIGHT, THERE WERE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, MASTER MAINTENANCE WARNING LIGHT, SLIP LIGHT ON ALONG WITH "CHECK ABS" "BRAKE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" WARNING MESSAGES APPEARING ON THE DASH BOARD. VERY UNSETTLING. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LEXUS DEALERSHIP AND THEY RETRIEVED ERROR CODE AS "C1391, ABNORMAL LEAK IN ACCUMULATOR. " THEY DIDN'T DETECT ANY LEAKAGE OR MOISTURE IN THE DIAGNOSIS, THEY RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE ABS ACTUATOR AND BOOSTER BUMP/ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY FOR A PRICE OF OVER $4300. AFTER I DID SOME RESEARCH OF THIS PROBLEM, I RAN INTO MANY COMPLAINT OF THE SAME ISSUE WITH VARIOUS TOYOTA AND LEXUS CARS, ESPECIALLY ON HYBRID MODELS. I ALSO LEARNED THE FAULTY COMPONENT IS THE ISSUE AND THE ISSUE HAS BEEN THERE ON MY CAR FOR A LONG TIME WITHOUT MY REALIZING IT. BECAUSE 1) THE ABS ASSEMBLY WOULD MAKE THE CHIRPING SOUND WHEN I START THE CAR. SINCE THE SOUND ISN'T LOUD, I WASN'T AWARE IT WAS ANY INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. 2) I ENCOUNTERED AN EVEN MORE SERIOUS SYMPTOM OF THIS ISSUE MANY MANY TIMES. WHEN I PUT THE GEAR ON REVERSE SHORTLY AFTER I SWITCH ON ENGINE, EVEN WHILE I AM STEPPING ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR WOULD JUST MOVE BACKWARD, OUT OF CONTROL OF THE BRAKE. I HAVE TO RELEASE AND REAPPLY MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO STOP ITS MOVEMENT. I FAILED TO RECOGNIZE THAT THIS IS THE SYMPTOM OF A FAILING ABS ACTUATOR EARLIER, AS I THOUGHT IT WAS SOMETHING THE HYBRID MODEL HAS WITH ITS ELECTRIC MOTOR KICK IN INSTANTLY. I ALSO LEARNED TOYOTA/LEXUS OFFERED CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE ACROSS MANY MODELS AS DETAILED IN THIS POST HTTP://WWW.DIY-TIME.COM/AUTOMOTIVE/TOYOTA/FAULTY-BRAKE-ACTUATOR-BRAKE-BOOSTER-PUMP-ON-TOYOTA-LEXUS-CARS/. LEXUS SHOULD ISSUE SWEEPING RECALL TO ADDRESS THIS PREVALENT ISSUE IN ITS PRODUCTS. THE ISSUE WOULD LEAD TO REAL SAFETY ISSUES FOR DRIVERS.

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-05-13
  • VIN: JTJBC1BA1D2
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE VOICE COMMANDS FOR "SUSPEND GUIDANCE", "RESUME GUIDANCE", "CANCEL GUIDANCE", ETC... THIS MEANS IN ORDER TO STOP NAVIGATION IT MUST BE MANUALLY TURNED OFF WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THIS REQUIRES MANUALLY ENTERING THE COMMAND WHICH REQUIRES WATCHING THE DISPLAY AND CAUSES DISTRACTED DRIVING. IT IS NOT A SAFE CONDITION AND I AM UNSURE WHY TOYOTA/LEXUS REMOVED THE VOICE COMMANDS SINCE BOTH OUR 2006 AND 2007 TOYOTA PRII HAVE THEM AND ARE MUCH SAFER CARS TO DRIVE BECAUSE OF IT. ALSO TOYOTA/LEXUS HAS MODIFIED THE NAVIGATION SO THAT IT CONTINUES TALKING EVEN WHEN USING THE BLUETOOTH HANDS FREE PHONE OPTION. WHICH MEANS THE NAVIGATION VOICE TALKS OVER YOUR PHONE CALL. THIS AGAIN CAN CAUSE DISTRACTED DRIVING AS YOU ARE TALKING TO SOMEONE AND SUDDENLY THE LOUD NAVIGATION VOICE BEGINS SPEAKING AS WELL. THIS IS ANOTHER UNSAFE CHANGE TOYOTA/LEXUS HAS MADE AS BOTH OF OUR PRII DO NOT ALLOW THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM TO OVERRIDE THE BLUETOOTH HAND FREE PHONE. I AM NOT SURE WHY A 2013 LEXUS THAT IS 6 YEARS NEWER THAN OUR PRII AND COSTS TWICE AS MUCH HAS SUCH AN UNSAFE NAVIGATION SYSTEM BUT IT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. BOTH PROBLEMS READILY CAUSE DISTRACTED DRIVING. *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-13
  • VIN: JTJZB1BA6D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: IT SOUNDED LIKE A GUN WENT OFF INSIDE THE CAR. WE WERE TRAVELING ABOUT 60 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE AND AFTER THE INITIAL SHOCK I LOOKED BOTH BEHIND ME AS WELL AS TO THE SIDE TO SEE WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE NOISE. TO SEE IF SOMETHING HAD HIT THE CAR ON TOP, WE PULLED BACK THE SUNROOF VISOR A FEW INCHES, ENOUGH TO SEE AND HEAR THAT THE SUNROOF HAD A LARGE HOLE IN IT. AFTER PULLING OFF AT THE NEAREST EXIT AND CLIMBING OUT OF THE CAR WE COULD SEE THAT THE SUNROOF LOOKED AS IF THE HAD EXPLODED UPWARDS AND OUTWARD. AN IRREGULAR HOLE ABOUT 5" X 15" ACROSS WAS EVIDENT AND THE EDGES WERE ARCHING UPWARDS AS IF SOMETHING HAS EXPLODED INSIDE THE CAR. SAFETY GLASS FRAGMENTS WERE ON TOP OF THE SUNROOF AND THERE WERE SOME ON THE VISOR INSIDE. NO GLASS HAD ENTERED THE CAR BECAUSE THE VISOR WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME. WE WERE NOT NEAR ANY BRIDGES AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION, WE SAW NO ROCKS. THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE WAS 75-80 DEGREES AND THE AIR-CONDITIONER WAS ON INSIDE THE CAR. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING HITTING THE CAR. *TR

Negative 2013 Lexus Rx450h car reviews

  1. Thomas Stiedemann 2025-05-24

I recently traded in my Lexus GX470 after 6 years for the 2013 450h. However, I have been disappointed with the estimated mileage on the sticker as it is nowhere close to what the vehicle actually gets. Despite contacting the sales man and bringing the vehicle in for service, the issue was not resolved and we were advised to contact Lexus corporate office. Unfortunately, the sales manager was insensitive and unhelpful, which was disappointing given that my family has been buying cars from LONGO Lexus (El Monte, CA) for 30 years. As a result, we have decided not to buy from LONGO again. I hope that sharing my experience will help others avoid similar issues.

  2. Monty Ruecker 2024-11-21

The fuel economy of the hybrid version is disappointing, falling well below the EPA estimates. The design of the back seats is poor, with a large gap that poses a safety hazard and is unsightly. Additionally, the navigation/computer system has limited functionality when the vehicle is in motion. The windshield wipers/washer also have poor coverage of the front windshield, and it is not possible to close off outside air when the defroster is engaged. These issues detract from an otherwise well-designed vehicle.

  3. Wilford Langosh 2024-06-26

The integrity of the cabin was compromised, and it is unclear whether it was due to post-earthquake radioactive material or the use of cosmoline. Although Lexus denies the use of cosmoline, the service department at the dealership claimed that this toxic substance was used, resulting in noxious fumes. Unfortunately, the dealership would not test the car under similar circumstances. As a result, my wife and child fell ill, and we had to return the car within a month, incurring a $5000 penalty. While the dealership was willing to help, the Lexus company was uncooperative. I am now considering reaching out to Federal and state regulatory authorities and pursuing litigation. In the unlikely event that Lexus stands behind their product, I will update my statement. However, I found Lexus corporate to be bureaucratic, and the dealership had changed their story many times, such as claiming that the noxious fumes would burn off.

Positive 2013 Lexus Rx450h car reviews

  1. Hilario Stracke 2025-07-18

MPG 25-26 (mostly freeway traffic). Not enough room for car seats if you are a driver with long legs. The car is super reliable with virtually no issues. It is also quiet and problem-free. When I traded it in, it held its value. Overall, I have no complaints.

  2. Junius Runolfsson 2025-07-03

Hi there! I wanted to share my recent experience with my new 2012 450RX Hybrid. While I was hoping for better gas mileage, I'm currently getting around 22-23 MPG, which is quite a bit lower than my previous ES 350. I'm a bit disappointed, but I'm hopeful that there might be some solutions out there. I reached out to my dealer, Lexus of Tampa Bay, but unfortunately they weren't able to help me. Despite being a repeat customer who has referred several buyers to them, I didn't receive the support I was hoping for. However, I wanted to share my experience with others so that they can make an informed decision. Thanks for listening! - Jay

  3. Cyrus Windler 2025-07-02

I bought my 2013 Lexus RX 450h used in September 2017 with only 26,000 miles on it. I'm happy to report that I average 28-30 mpg in the city and about 27-29 mpg on the highway. Living on a busy highway, I was worried that there wouldn't be enough power on demand when I needed it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Even when I had to gun it to get on the road due to heavy traffic, there was no problem at all. I've only owned this SUV for about 6 weeks, but I'm already impressed with its performance, looks, and comfort. I definitely feel like we got our money's worth and would not hesitate to purchase it again.

  4. Walker Carroll 2025-06-27

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Lexus! It's great to know that you're getting such good mileage out of it, especially when you're driving on battery power. It sounds like you got a great deal on a low-mileage vehicle, and I hope it continues to serve you well for many years to come. As a fellow Lexus lover, I completely understand the appeal of the brand, even if it can be a bit pricey to maintain in the long run.

  5. Brannon Lubowitz 2025-04-05

Congratulations on your new purchase! It's great to hear that the 2013 RX450h has exceeded your expectations. The advancements in technology over the past 7 years are truly impressive. The handling is much better, and the engine transitions are seamless, making for a smoother ride. It's also great to hear that the road noise and engine sounds have been reduced, making for a more comfortable driving experience. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
