The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.

The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.

First generation (YD1; 2001)

Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.

The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).

The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.

The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

Common 2019 Acura Mdx problems

The 2019 Acura MDX has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, although they are generally minor compared to other midsize luxury SUVs on the market, leading to lower repair costs.

Another problem reported by some Acura MDX owners is issues with the cruise control radar, which has been reported within the first 5,000 miles. The first thing to check is that the radar sensor is clean and clear of debris, which could cause it to be overly sensitive. If the sensor is clean, then there may be an issue with the part itself. Most dealerships will replace it under warranty, but out of warranty, they are around $1,200.

Difficulty closing the rear hatch is another problem mentioned by several 2019 MDX owners within the first 1,000 miles. Hatch alignment issues are the most common source of the problem. Re-aligning the hatch costs around $100, but usually, it is covered under warranty for free by a dealership when the SUV is so new.

There are four recalls on the 2019 Acura MDX, which is similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall is for the fuel pump which may fail. Acura will replace the fuel pump on affected models for free. Other recalls cover timing belt teeth, tailgate lid lights, and brake caliper pistons. Acura will replace parts on affected models for those issues for free as well.

The 2019 Acura MDX is expected to last around 250,000 miles with some minor engine sensor and cruise control issues reported. At $37,500 to $47,250, it's a great value for a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of passenger room.

In terms of reliability, there are no widespread complaints on the 2019 MDX. Transmission problems are common on models from 2009–2011, while 2015–2022 all have excellent long-term reliability ratings. The 2019 Acura MDX is very safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional upgrades include a surround-view parking camera.

In conclusion, while the 2019 Acura MDX has some minor issues with the engine stalling, cruise control radar, and rear hatch alignment, it is generally a reliable and safe vehicle with excellent long-term reliability ratings. It offers practicality and passenger room paired with a responsive steering, technology features, and decent power from the V6 engine. The 2019 Acura MDX is a great value for a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of passenger room and excellent safety features.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 5J8YD7H56KL
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Middle row passenger seatbelt malfunctioning. Waiting on part on back order. Available for inspection until it gets replaced. Numerous occasions noticed the belt would lock when getting children out of car and didn’t think anything of it. Had to move middle row seat to get it to retract out of the lock position. Today my child got tangled in the seatbelt and he was trying to get out of car and it retracted and locked and kept getting tighter around his chest. I tried slacking the belt back to loosen it and it wouldn’t retract out and only got tighter. I eventually cut the belt as he couldn’t breathe and I was unable to loosen the belt. It has not been inspected yet by anyone as I’m waiting for the part to come in. No messages on car dashboard.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 5J8YD4H02KL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Received a recall notice Feb 2024. It is now 9 months later and manufacturer has said they have NO ETA when parts will be available after multiple calls. They are vague with the issues. Told if I think I have the issue, I can bring my car in for diagnosis. If they don't find the problem I have to continue to wait AND they will charge a diagnostics fee for troubleshooting. I am concerned I have an unreliable vehicle that could fail at any time. I think 9 months is more than reasonable to have a recall fixed and replacement parts manufactured.

Negative 2019 Acura Mdx car reviews

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019-2020 Acura MDX Advance. While there were a few disappointments, such as the low resolution of the backup and surround cameras and the underpowered 3.5L V6 engine, there were also some positives. I really appreciate the stylish design and comfortable seats, and the ride is smooth and comfortable. Additionally, I'm grateful that Honda honors their warranty and recalls. While I do wish the acceleration was quicker and smoother, I've found that driving in sport mode helps. Overall, I think this is a great car, but I do wish the camera system had a higher resolution for the price point. Thank you for listening to my thoughts!

I've been taking my car to the dealership since month 1 of buying it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing issues with the Collision Detection System, Road Assist System, and Power Steering failing sporadically, making the car impossible to drive when this happens. It's been a frustrating experience as I haven't been able to get this issue resolved and Honda is not acknowledging the problem. I hope to find a solution soon, but this experience has left me feeling disappointed. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The 2019 MDX ride quality can be improved to provide a smoother experience over bumps.

The driving assist features of the 2019 Acura MDX SH-AWD w/Technology and Entertainment Package may not work in extreme temperatures, which can be inconvenient. The dashboard may display messages such as 'Some Driver Assist Systems Cannot Operate: Camera Temperature Too High' and 'Auto Engine Idle Stop Unavailable'. Additionally, some users may find the Entertainment Package to be less user-friendly. While the vehicle offers 3 rows of seating, the 3rd row may not be suitable for larger passengers or infant/child seats. We understand that these issues can be frustrating, but we hope that you will still enjoy the many other features that the Acura MDX has to offer.

I recently traded my 2018 RDX for the 2019 MDX. I was disappointed to find that the temperature control is located on the screen, which can be difficult to use while driving. It's a safety concern that could be improved. Additionally, I found the 9-speed transmission to be lacking and the interior noise level to be a bit high. The GPS system could also use some improvement. Overall, I'm not completely satisfied with my Acura experience. Thank you for considering my feedback.

Positive 2019 Acura Mdx car reviews

  1. Erwin Bernhard 2025-01-08

I've only had this vehicle for a couple of months, so I'm still getting used to the hybrid part of it. I traded in my 2018 Acura RDX Advance because the ride wasn't very luxurious. I drove a regular MDX and it rode much nicer, but the Hybrid with the Active Dampers is amazing! It's fast yet comfortable, and rides beautifully. The switch from battery to gas is mostly seamless. The 7-speed dual-clutch is great, but at lower speeds, it tends to stumble like most dual-clutch transmissions. There could be less road noise (an Acura trait). I love the infotainment system, and while it's dated, it has been in my last 3 cars and it works GREAT. Of course, that's if you take the time to learn it and speak to it correctly and clearly. I love my MDX and may buy this one at the end of the lease!

I was searching for a car that could comfortably seat 5 people, but with the option of seating more if needed. Additionally, I was looking for a 6 cylinder engine. While the turbo charged 4 cylinder engines seem impressive, I don't believe there is enough data to support their long term benefits. Since I tend to keep my cars for a long time, I wanted a vehicle that would last at least 10 years. The MDX met all of my requirements. The 50/50 split 3rd row seat provides both comfortable seating and ample cargo space. I have been the proud owner of my MDX for about 6 weeks now and I couldn't be happier.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that I realized I need to get the ENTERTAINMENT package to have seating for 7. I do wish it had a 3rd row latch though.

  4. Laverne Bogisich 2024-11-05

This is a fantastic car! It has been driven for 32000 miles since it was purchased new and it still runs like a dream. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet, with excellent acceleration and handling. The interior is spacious, luxurious, and uncluttered. The Sh-awd system enhances cornering and gives the vehicle a very stable feel through road curves and around corners. Even on a long road trip, you can't wait to get back to driving after a short pit stop. Recently, we completed a 2800 mile trip during which we drove at 60-65 mph for extensive periods of time. I was thrilled and pleasantly surprised that we logged 30 mpg, a testament to the Acura 3.5L energy management system. This is the best travel car I have ever owned, even surpassing Detroit's finest. I highly recommend trying one for yourself!
