2002 Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems

The Suzuki XL-7 (styled as XL7 for the second generation) is a mid-size SUV sold by Suzuki from 1998 to 2009, over two generations. Slotted above the Grand Vitara in Suzuki's lineup, the XL-7 offered three-row seating. XL-7 stands for "Xtra Large 7-seater".

First generation (XL-7; 1998)

The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, had a body-on-frame construction, and was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara. The North American version had a Suzuki-designed 2.5- or 2.7-liter V6 engine, on a rear-wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel drive. Beginning in 2003, European versions were also available with a 2.0-liter Peugeot turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS (80 kW).

A unique trait in the US market in this segment was that the XL-7 was available with a five-speed manual transmission, in both five- and seven-seat variants.

When introduced, the XL-7 was the least expensive SUV available with three-row seating in North America. It was awarded the Consumers Digest "Best Buy" award. However, sales slowed as the vehicle aged relative to the competition.

In Thailand, the Grand Vitara XL-7 was Imported by Siam International Corporation Co. Ltd. on 2002.

In Indonesia, the Grand Escudo XL-7 was launched on July 19, 2003, at the 12th Gaikindo Auto Expo.

Common 2002 Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems

The Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 2002 has some common problems that owners have reported over the years. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the steering and suspension of the vehicle. Owners have reported hearing a knocking noise coming from the front suspension area, particularly when driving over speed bumps or poorly surfaced roads. This problem is often caused by faulty roll bar links, which can lead to play in the steering wheel. The solution for this issue is to replace the roll bar links, and if the problem persists, the steering linkage may need to be replaced as well.

Another common problem with the Grand Vitara XL-7 2002 is related to the engine management warning light appearing on the dashboard. This issue is usually caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, which can lead to a slight increase in fuel consumption. The solution for this problem is to replace the oxygen sensor, which should remove the engine warning light from the dashboard.

The rear door handles on the XL7 are also prone to breaking, and if the rear door handles are not working or broken, they will need to be replaced.

The 2002 Grand Vitara may also have issues with the timing chain, which can cause a rattling noise from the engine. The main cause of this problem is poor servicing, which results in the tensioners sticking. The solution for this problem is to flush the engine and change the oil, which should fix the problem in most cases. If the problem persists, the timing chain may need to be replaced.

The Grand Vitara XL-7 2002 may also have intermittent issues with the check engine light coming on, which can be caused by a faulty O2 sensor.

Overall, the Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 2002 is a reliable vehicle, but like any car, it can have issues. It is essential to check the service history for any missed stamps and buy only if there is a full record. It is also important to check for off-road damage, particularly on the underside, bumpers, and suspension. It is also recommended to check for any recalls related to the vehicle, such as the suspension-related recall on V6s and diesels over concerns that the studs on the front strut mountings may shear.

  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: AC COMPRESSOR WENT OUT TWICE IN MY 2002 SUZUKI XL-7. ONCE IN AUGUST 2009 AND AGAIN IN MAY 2012. I HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED TWICE BECAUSE IT WAS A PRETTY HOT SUMMER. ALSO, AFTER THE SUMMER MONTHS, DURING THE WINTER MONTHS WHEN I NEED TO TURN ON THE HEAT, THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I GOT THIS TESTED AND IT HAD TO DO WITH THE AC COMPRESSOR. THIS MAKES SENSE BECAUSE THE XL-7 COMPRESSOR IS DUAL. IT'S RUNS AC AND HEAT. POWER STEERING HAS BEEN LEAKING FOR THE PAST YEAR. I WOULD ADD POWER STEERING FLUID EVERY TWO WEEKS OR SO. BUT NOW IT'S PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE. I HAVE TO ADD FLUID EVERY OTHER DAY. FRONT AND BACK BUMPER IS DISPLAYING CORROSION. IT LOOKS LIKE THE METAL HINGES THAT HOLD UP THE BUMPERS ARE WEARING AND YOU CAN SEE IT. THIS CAR WAS NOT BUILT TO LAST. I FORESEE MANY MORE ISSUES. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-11
  • VIN: JS3TY92V424
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CONDENSATION FROM VEHICLES AIR CONDITIONING DRIPS ONTO THE INSULATION AROUND BRAKE LINE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT BRAKE LINE FROM EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT. LIVING IN TEXAS THE VEHICLE RARELY IS TURNED ON WITHOUT THE AIR CONDITIONING. THE CONTINUED SATURATION, DRYING AND VIBRATION OF NORMAL DAY TO DAY USE CAUSED A LEAK IN ONE OF THE TWO BRAKE LINES LEADING TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS DISCOVERED AFTER OWNER REPORTED SPONGY FEELING AND LOSS OF BRAKE HOLDING STRENGTH WHILE IN STOPPED POSITION. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION IT WAS NOTICED BOTH BRAKE LINES BEHIND PROTECTIVE INSULATION HAS SEVER OXIDATION CLOSEST TO THE ENDS THAT ARE ATTACHED TO AN ADAPTER. FIX THAT I EMPLOYED WAS TO BYPASS THE EXTENSION THAT RAN FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE DOWN THE PASSENGER SIDE, ENTERED THE INSULATED EXTENSION AND THEN ENTERED THE ADAPTER THEN INTO THE REAR BRAKE LINES. I WAS ABLE TO BYPASS ALL THE UNNEEDED JOINTS WITH 2 48 BRAKE LINES AND 2 COUPLINGS BOUGHT FROM LOCAL AUTO PARTS AND REROUTED LINE FROM DRIVER SIDE DOWN ACROSS REAR SIDE OF UNDERCARRIAGE THEN DIRECTLY INTO REAR BRAKE LINE. THE A/C NO LONGER DRIPS ONTO THE BRAKE LINE.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-06-10

WHILE DRIVING AT 65-70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR LOCKED UP AND SNAPPED THE BELT CAUSING THE POWER STEERING TO STOP WORKING AND THE CAR TO OVERHEAT. I PAID 1200 TO HAVE IT FIXED ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO. NOW THE NEW ONE IS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I LOOKED ON MESSAGE BOARDS AND SEE THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM ON THESE CARS FOR HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. THIS COMPANY NEEDS TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. IT'S A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX MULTIPLE TIMES. *TR

  • VIN: JS3TX92VX24
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: NO EVENT LEAD UP TO THE FAILURE OF THE COMPRESSOR IT JUST STARTED TO SQUEAL ONE DAY. THE FAILURE HAPPENED IN ABOUT MARCH IN MY SUZUKI XL-7 2002 WHEN I TRIED TO TURN ON THE HEAT AND THE FAN WOULD NOT PUMP OUT THE HEAT AND IT MADE A LOAD SQUEALING NOISE. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO A MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE COMPRESSOR WENT OUT AND NOT ONLY DID THAT GO OUT BUT WHEN IT DIED IT CREATED METAL SHAVINGS WHICH WERE SUCKED INTO TWO OTHER PARTS. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT IT IS RARE THAT A COMPRESSOR SHOULD GO OUT AT 63,000 MILES AND IT COULD EFFECT THE POWER STEERING. I AM CURRENTLY HAVING THE PARTS REPLACED BECAUSE I AM 6 MONTHS PREGNANT AND NEED HEAT FOR THE NEW BABY. THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. *TR
