1996 Lincoln Mark viii problems

The Lincoln Mark VIII is a grand touring luxury sport coupe that was marketed by Lincoln from the 1993 to 1998 model years. The first generation of the Mark series branded entirely as a Lincoln, the Mark VIII again served as a counterpart of the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar. Though maintaining its traditional brand rivalry with the Cadillac Eldorado, the Mark VIII was also developed to become more competitive against luxury coupes from automakers around the world.

Replacing the Fox platform of the Mark VII, the Mark VIII was the exclusive model to use the FN10 chassis, a derivative of the MN12 platform developed for the Thunderbird and Cougar. Growing slightly in size (primarily in wheelbase), the Mark VIII was developed with independent suspension for all four wheels; at the time, the only other rear-wheel drive American cars to do so (alongside the Thunderbird and Cougar) were the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Viper RT/10. Matching the Cadillac Northstar engine, the Mark VIII was fitted with a dual-overhead cam 4.6L V8, the first Ford Motor Company vehicle fitted with such an engine.

Through its six-year production run, the Mark VIII was manufactured by Ford at its Wixom Assembly Plant (Wixom, Michigan). As of current production, the model line is the final generation of the Mark series and Lincoln has not introduced a direct successor to the model line ever since its 1998 discontinuation.

  2. Air Suspension Problems:
    • The air suspension system in the 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII has been a frequent source of complaints. Owners mentioned issues with the front and rear air suspension, leading to replacements with springs. The cost of converting to springs can be substantial, around $1500 for all components.

To address this, owners added weight to the trunk for better traction and stability.
  6. Overall Reliability:
    • Despite the positive aspects of the Lincoln Mark VIII, including its powerful engine and luxurious features, the reported problems with the transmission, air suspension, headlights, and various components raise concerns about the overall reliability and longevity of the vehicle. These issues can lead to significant repair costs and impact the driving experience.

In summary, the 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII has faced several common problems according to owner complaints, ranging from transmission and air suspension issues to electrical failures and handling concerns. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-11-01
  • VIN: 1LNLM91V8TY
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1996 LINCOLN MARK VIII EQUIPPED WITH LUMINARC HIGH INTENSITY HEADLIGHTS. THE VEHICLE HAS 56,089 MILES. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT HAS FAILED AND APPARENTLY IS NO LONGER SERVICEABLE. THE MANUFACTURER'S DESIGN DID NOT ALLOW FOR THE SIMPLE REPLACEMENT OF A LIGHT BULB BUT INSTEAD REQUIRES THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $900.00 PLUS LABOR PER SIDE. 97 AND 98 MODELS ARE DESIGNED FOR SIMPLE BULB REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $260.00 PER BULB. WHILE INVESTIGATING THE FACILITATING OF HEAD LIGHT REPAIRS FOR MY AUTOMOBILE I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT HEAD LIGHT ASSEMBLIES FOR 1996 MODEL CARS ARE OBSOLETE AND REPLACEMENT BULBS FOR 1997-1998 MODEL CARS HAVE BEEN ON BACK ORDER FOR APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS AND ARE NOT DUE TO BE AVAILABLE FOR ANOTHER 3-4 MONTHS. MY INTERNET RESEARCH HAS LED ME TO AN UNKNOWN NUMBER OF OWNERS IN SIMILAR PERIL. WE ARE ALL SCRAMBLING FOR SOLUTIONS TO KEEP OUR AUTOS ON THE ROAD BOTH SAFELY AND LEGALLY. INTERNET SEARCHES FOR USED PARTS (LINCOLN CUSTOMER SERVICE ACTUALLY REFERS YOU TO PRIVATE USED PARTS DEALERS RATHER THAN SUPPLY PARTS THEMSELVES), POSSIBLE NEW PARTS AND EVEN FABRICATED NEW LIGHT SYSTEMS (QUESTIONABLE LEGALITY) ARE BEING PURSUED. IT HAS BECOME APPARENT THAT THERE ARE NO GOOD SOLUTIONS AND WE OWNERS HAVE FEW OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO US. THE MANUFACTURER HAS DESIGNED A VEHICLE LIGHTING SYSTEM THAT HAS FAILED TO LAST OR BE SUCCESSFULLY SERVICED WITHIN THE VEHICLE'S USEFUL LIFESPAN. IN CLOSING, FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS CREATED A CLASS OF CAR OWNER THAT CAN NOT KEEP HIS CAR STREET LEGAL OR SAFE. FORD HAS ABANDONED THESE OWNERS TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES IN PURSUIT OF SAFETY. THESE ARE NOT ANCIENT CARS, THEY ARE WELL WITHIN THEIR USEFUL LIFESPAN AND FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FACILITATING THEIR SAFE OPERATION DURING THAT TIME. CURRENTLY, FORD HAS NO REASONABLE ANSWERS AND THE SITUATION THEY HAVE CREATED IS WHOLLY ABSURD. CORY A. DAVID. *NM

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-04-11
  • VIN: 1LNLM91V8TY
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A COMPLAINT ABOUT MY LINCOLN MARK VIII HEADLIGHTS FROM 1993-1996. THE HEADLIGHTS AFTER A COUPLE YEARS BEGIN TO DEGRADE. THE REFLECTIVE COATING INSIDE THE PARABOLA TURNS CHALKY AND THEREFORE DOES NOT REFLECT LIGHT THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED. THIS MAKES FOR VERY POOR LIGHTING AT NIGHT WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. LINCOLN NEW ABOUT THIS AND SWITCHED TO HID (HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE) UNITS IN 1996, BUT ONLY ON THE LSC MODELS. FORD/LINCOLN SELLS THESE UNITS BUT AT A VERY VERY HIGH PRICE. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL AND HID'S INSTALLED IN THE CARS WITH THE DEFECTIVE HEADLAMPS BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. *NM

Positive 1996 Lincoln Mark viii car reviews

  1. Johnathon Witting 2025-01-03

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 95 model that I purchased back in September of 2000. At the time, it had 68k miles on the odometer and I was a bit hesitant about the supposed 'High Mileage'. I was even prepared to spend a few thousand dollars on repairs since the car was so close to 100k miles. However, I decided to put off a recommended transmission cooler and some much-needed transmission upgrades because I thought it would be a waste of time, since the transmission would surely die right around the 100k mile mark. But to my surprise, 100k miles passed without so much as a hiccup! Around 175k, I had to replace all the air bags at a cost of $650 for parts. The installation took a little bit of a Saturday afternoon. Currently, I have 5000 drag strip passes on the car and it has an impressive 297,000 miles on it! Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Hassle free vehicle with great power and a luxury ride. Why did FORD stop making these cars?

  3. Davin Wolf 2024-11-21

I bought this car 5 1/2 years ago when it had 30K miles on it. It has been a good car overall, but it has had some reliability issues. Unfortunately, the transmission has been completely rebuilt twice and still isn't working properly. The rear axle was also rebuilt, and brake jobs are needed every 25K miles. The fuel pump also stopped working, and now the air suspension system is leaking, which will cost $2500 to repair. Additionally, there have been some electrical issues such as the heater blower stopping, the door ajar light staying on, and the speakers on the right side not working. Despite all of these flaws, I really love this car and can't bring myself to sell it. My wife and even my mechanic have suggested selling it, but I just can't part with it.

  4. Arnold Carter 2024-11-19

The Lincoln Mk VIII marks the end of a glorious line by Ford/Lincoln. It is unfortunate that tastes change and the line was discontinued in 1958, as it is a loss to the automobiling public. My Mark VIII (175,000 miles) is now considered a classic. With its new engine (50,000 miles ago - and not the fault of the car!), it is ready for many thousands more miles of pleasurable driving. Owning a Lincoln is a sign of class, but owning a Mark is the top of the line!

  5. Emery Tromp 2024-11-09

The Mark VIII is truly one of a kind. Although it hasn't been produced since 1998, no other car can match its luxurious, powerful, understated, and timeless design. Take a drive in any other rear-wheel drive luxury coupe, and then experience the Mark VIII. You'll be sold on its power, handling, and myriad creature-comforts. Plus, with a fuel economy of 17(city)/27(highway), it's a great choice. Thanks to depreciation, you can now get so much for so little. Don't miss out on the opportunity to drive and own one. You're guaranteed miles of smiles!
