2004 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

Common 2004 Pontiac Sunfire problems

Engine Prone to Head Gasket Failure

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 has been reported to have issues with head gasket failure. The head gasket is a crucial component of the engine that seals the cylinders to prevent coolant and oil from leaking into the combustion chamber. When the head gasket fails, it can lead to engine overheating, loss of coolant, and reduced engine performance.

The symptoms of head gasket failure include engine overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, engine misfires, and a loss of coolant without any visible leaks. If left untreated, head gasket failure can cause severe engine damage, leading to expensive repairs.

To prevent head gasket failure, it is essential to maintain the engine's cooling system regularly. This includes checking the coolant level, inspecting for leaks, and ensuring that the radiator and cooling system components are clean and free from debris.

Timing Chain Tensioner/Guides May Wear and Cause Noise

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 has also been reported to have issues with the timing chain tensioner and guides wearing out, causing noise. The timing chain is a critical component of the engine that synchronizes the movement of the crankshaft and camshaft. The timing chain tensioner and guides ensure that the timing chain remains tight and properly aligned.

The symptoms of worn-out timing chain tensioner and guides include a rattling or grinding noise from the engine, especially during startup or when the engine is idling. If left untreated, worn-out timing chain tensioner and guides can cause the timing chain to become misaligned, leading to engine damage and expensive repairs.

To prevent issues with the timing chain tensioner and guides, it is essential to maintain the engine's timing system regularly. This includes checking the timing chain for wear and damage, inspecting the tensioner and guides for signs of wear, and ensuring that the timing chain is properly aligned.

Engine Control Module (ECM) can fail

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 has been reported to have issues with the Engine Control Module (ECM) failing. The ECM is a critical component of the engine management system that controls various engine functions, including fuel injection, ignition timing, and emission control.

The symptoms of a failed ECM include engine performance issues, such as reduced power, poor fuel efficiency, and difficulty starting. In some cases, the check engine light may also illuminate, indicating a problem with the engine management system.

To prevent issues with the ECM, it is essential to maintain the engine management system regularly. This includes checking the ECM for any signs of damage or failure, inspecting the wiring and connectors for corrosion or damage, and ensuring that the ECM is properly calibrated and programmed.

Transmission Problems

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 has been reported to have issues with the transmission, including problems with shifting and engagement. The transmission is a critical component of the vehicle's drivetrain that transmits power from the engine to the wheels.

The symptoms of transmission problems include difficulty shifting, slipping gears, and a grinding or clunking noise when shifting. In some cases, the vehicle may also experience a loss of power or reduced fuel efficiency.

To prevent transmission problems, it is essential to maintain the transmission regularly. This includes checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting the transmission for leaks, and ensuring that the transmission is properly aligned and adjusted.

Interior Sound Issues

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 has been reported to have interior sound issues, including excessive noise and vibration. The interior of the vehicle is made primarily of plastic, which can contribute to the noise and vibration.

The symptoms of interior sound issues include excessive noise and vibration, especially during acceleration or when driving at high speeds. This can be distracting and uncomfortable for the driver and passengers.

To prevent interior sound issues, it is essential to maintain the vehicle's interior regularly. This includes checking the interior components for signs of wear or damage, inspecting the insulation for gaps or tears, and ensuring that the interior is clean and free from debris.

Reliability and MPG

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 is generally considered to be a reliable vehicle, with a decent fuel efficiency rating. The vehicle is equipped with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine that provides adequate power and fuel efficiency.

However, the vehicle's reliability and MPG can be affected by various factors, including maintenance, driving habits, and environmental conditions. To ensure the vehicle's reliability and fuel efficiency, it is essential to maintain the vehicle regularly, drive responsibly, and follow the recommended maintenance schedule.

Conclusion

The Pontiac Sunfire 2004 has been reported to have several common problems, including engine prone to head gasket failure, timing chain tensioner/guides may wear and cause noise, engine control module (ECM) can fail, transmission problems, and interior sound issues. To prevent these issues, it is essential to maintain the vehicle regularly and follow the recommended maintenance schedule. By doing so, owners can ensure the vehicle's reliability, fuel efficiency, and longevity.

  • VIN: 1G2JB12F747
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 PONTIAC SUNFIRE, I HAD TO HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT IN ORDER FOR IT TO GO STRAIGHT. I THOUGHT I MIGHT NEED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT AND DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT MY NEIGHBORHOOD FIRESTONE DEALER THAT NORMALLY WORKS ON MY CARS. AFTER CHECKING THE CAR, THEY CALLED ME AND SAID THE FRAME OF THE CAR WAS RUSTED OUT AND IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR, THEY GAVE ME PICTURES OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME WHICH ALL READY HAD CRACKED APART DUE TO THE RUST. THEY SAID IF YOU HIT A POTHOLE OR ANYTHING IN THE ROAD THE FRAME COULD SPLIT APART AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED A BODY SHOP TO SEE IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED AND THEY SAID IT WAS TO BIG OF A JOB.. THEY RECOMMENDED JUNKING THE CAR.. THIS CAR IS IN REAL GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR THIS MAJOR DEFECT. THIS HAS FORCED ME TO BUY ANOTHER CAR.. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY OF YOUR PRODUCT. I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-06-24
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY GAUGES (ALL BUT THE SPEEDOMETER) HAVE GONE CRAZY! THE FUEL GAUGE AND TEMP GAUGE ARE THE WORST. SOMETIMES THE TACHOMETER , THOUGH NOT OFTEN. MY FUEL GAUGE NEVER READS CORRECT AND SOMETIMES POINTS DIRECTLY DOWN OR IS INTO THE SPEEDOMETER. MY TEMP GAUGE EITHER NEVER MOVES OR ONCE IT MOVES, IT STAYS STUCK IN THE NEW LEVEL. IT SOMETIMES GETS INTO THE TACHOMETER CAUSING THAT ONE TO STOP WORKING. IT SOMETIMES GOES BACK TO NORMAL IF THE CAR IS TURNED ON AND OFF MANY, MANY TIMES. OTHER TIMES THAT DOESN'T EVEN WORK. IT OCCURS ALL THE TIME AND FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS THEY HAVE BEEN STUCK. I WOULD GET IT REPAIRED, BUT CAN'T AFFORD THE COSTS. *TR

  • Summary: I OWN A 2004 PONTIAC SUNFIRE AND THE HEADLIGHTS ARE EXTREMELY DIM, MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT WITHOUT USING THE "BRIGHTS". AFTER REPLACING HEADLIGHT BULBS, THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC THAT TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SUNFIRE AND IT INVOLVED CORROSION TO THE HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS. I LOOKED ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WAS A MANUFACTURER RECALL, WHICH I DID NOT FIND. WHILE RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM I FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS VERY COMMON AND THERE IS MUCH WRITTEN ABOUT THE PROBLEM IN SEVERAL AUTO FORUMS, BUT GM HAS NOT ADDRESSED THE ISSUE WITH A RECALL. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS VEHICLE AND HAD COMPLAINED TO ME ABOUT THE PROBLEM WHICH I DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE UNTIL SHE WAS FOLLOWING ME AT NIGHT AND I SAW THAT HER HEADLIGHTS WERE EXTREMELY DIM. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS, WHY HASN'T THIS PROBLEM BEEN ADDRESSED. I SEE THE DEALERS ARE CHARGING APPROX. $600 TO REPAIR THE WIRING HARNESS, WHICH SEEMS RIDICULOUS, CONSIDERING IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. DOES THERE NEED TO BE DEATHS INVOLVED IN ORDER FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESSED?HEADLIGHTS *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-24
  • VIN: 1G2JB12F647
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE AS ODI ID NUMBER : 1016866, WHERE AT ANYTIME, ANY SPEED, STOPPED OR MOVING, MY CAR'S ENGINE WILL DROP BELOW THE NORMAL IDLING SPEED AND STALL OUT. IT WILL JUST STOP! THE CAR IS MOVING, BUT THE ENGINE HAS STOPPED! THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES! I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM A COUPLE OF TIMES IN A HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC AREA. THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR WRECK, BECAUSE WHEN THE ENGINE IS STOPPED, YOU LOOSE POWER STEERING! THIS CAR IS NOT AN EASY CAR TO MANEUVER WITHOUT POWER STEERING. I CRANKED THE KEY, THE CAR WOULD START RIGHT UP, BUT AS SOON AS THE CLUTCH HITS THE FLOOR AND GIVES THE ENGINE TIME TO WIND DOWN, IT STALLS AGAIN. THIS ISSUE IS VERY SPORADIC, I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO PUT A FINGER ON WHAT WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL THAT WAY. I DID EMAIL PONTIAC'S CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND HAVE RECEIVED NO REGARD TO MY EMAIL. NO QUESTIONS, NO CONFIRMATION OTHER THAN THE AUTOMATIC REPLY, NO CALLS, NOTHING. I FEEL LIKE WE ARE GETTING SHAFTED ON THIS ISSUE AND I DON'T THINK PONTIAC IS TAKING THIS ISSUE SERIOUSLY! I DON'T THINK THEY REALIZE THE POTENTIAL DANGER THIS ISSUE PROPOSES! *NM

Although the Sunfire and similar Chevrolet Cavalier may be considered basic transportation, it's important to note that they are outdated and may not be the most comfortable option. The Sunfire sedan has been discontinued, and the coupe received a face lift for 2003. However, the Sunfire's secure handling is a plus. While ABS is no longer standard, the car still offers a decent ride. The four-cylinder engine may be a bit buzzy, but it gets the job done. The front seats are thinly padded and may lack support on long journeys, but they are still comfortable. The rear seat is a bit cramped and may require some maneuvering to access. Interior fit and finish could be improved, but overall it's a decent car. It's important to note that the Celica is also a great option to consider.

I was in the market for a car and was considering various options such as Civic's, Scion's and others. However, I came across GM's announcement of a $4000 rebate on their car which was not on my radar before. I am pleased to say that the engine performs exceptionally well, making it easy to navigate through mountains while also providing good mileage. Although the fit and finish is fair, the seats are uncomfortable and the room inside is poor. On the bright side, the handling is very good and it's fun to drive. The styling is unique and sets it apart from other cars. However, it's important to note that the resale value is not great. Overall, it may not be the best option as a new car, but it's definitely a steal as a used car.

I have a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire and I must say, the resale value is not great. Despite being only 4 years old, having only 47,000 miles, and being in excellent shape, I was only offered $3800 from dealers. I would advise you to be cautious when considering this car. It's a great car, but unfortunately, the value depreciates quickly. Just thought you should know.

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your car. It sounds like you had a really tough time with it. I hope that you and anyone else involved in the accident are okay. It's understandable that you feel frustrated and disappointed with the car's performance. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and warning others about your experience. Take care.

We have experienced some issues with this car since we purchased it. Unfortunately, the motor mount broke in half which caused damage to the axles. Safety is a top priority for us, and we are grateful that no one was hurt. Although we have brought the car in for service three times, the hood is still loose on one side, and the dealership has been unable to replace it. Additionally, we noticed that the trunk was leaking just two days after we got the car, and upon inspection, a wire coat hanger was found inside the wall, which was puzzling. We believe that the car has some defects, but we have not received any assistance from Pontiac. We hope that they will take responsibility for the issues before anyone gets hurt.

Just got this car after nine years of minivans. No comparison in interior size, of course, and the minivans had many more conveniences, but I really like driving this car, and I think it looks cool. Mine is orange.

I'm glad to hear that you've had no problems with your 2004 Pontiac Sunfire since you bought it. Although the gas mileage has been a minor disappointment, it's great to hear that it has been close to 30 mpg in both highway and town driving. While it may be too small for a family, it's perfect for just you and your young son. I hope you have lots of fun with the sunroof in the summer!

As a taller than average male, you might be concerned about purchasing this vehicle. However, the many advantages of owning this car outweigh this small inconvenience. The style, options, fuel efficiency, and affordability are all pluses that make this economy vehicle worth considering. I have always loved Pontiac, and they have held true to their name, even on this entry-level vehicle.

I really appreciate the way this little car looks and drives. It's so much more fun than any of the other cars I've driven and for some reason it feels more powerful than the others. Plus, it's dirt cheap and perfect for everyday driving.

It's great to drive and it's so much fun!
