The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 2023 Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery 2023 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include electrical faults, front lower control arm issues, faulty air suspension, timing chain replacement, and water pump leaks.

Electrical faults are one of the most commonly reported problems in the Land Rover Discovery 2023, typically affecting the operation of the vehicle's door central locking system and windows. These faults can be frustrating for owners and may require professional attention to rectify.

Front lower control arm issues are another common problem in the Land Rover Discovery 2023, with many drivers reporting that the front lower control arms in these systems require replacing after 50,000 miles due to natural wear and tear. This can be a costly repair and may require the attention of a qualified Land Rover technician.

Faulty air suspension is also a common problem in the Land Rover Discovery 2023, with leaks in the rubber causing issues after 100,000 miles. This can result in a less comfortable ride and may require professional attention to rectify.

Timing chain replacement is another issue that has been reported by Land Rover Discovery 2023 owners. Despite manufacturer recommendations to replace the oil every 15,000 miles, many drivers have reported damage to the timing chain caused by leaving the oil change until this point. To prevent this costly repair, more frequent oil changes at every 8,000 miles are recommended.

Water pump leaks are a common problem in the Land Rover Discovery 2023, with a leaky water pump potentially leading to engine overheating if not replaced promptly. This can be a serious issue and may require professional attention to rectify.

In summary, the Land Rover Discovery 2023 has several common problems that owners may encounter, including electrical faults, front lower control arm issues, faulty air suspension, timing chain replacement, and water pump leaks. These issues can be costly to repair and may require the attention of a qualified Land Rover technician.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
  • VIN: SALRW4EU3P2
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety issue with my 2023 Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan that occurred on April [XXX] 2024. VIN: [XXX] The issue involved the steering wheel locking unexpectedly. After parking the car overnight for 15 hours, I returned to find a message indicating lane departure assist wasn't working, and the steering wheel was completely locked and inoperable. I attempted various troubleshooting steps, including changing driving modes, restarting the car, and checking for software updates, but none resolved the problem. While the car functioned normally in terms of forward and backward movement, the locked steering wheel prevented any turning ability. There were also no warning lights or error messages displayed on the dashboard. The only solution I found was to perform a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 3 minutes and then reconnecting it. It's concerning that a similar issue appears to be reported by other Land Rover owners online, particularly with Defender models. [XXX] My primary concern is the possibility of this malfunction occurring while driving, which could lead to a serious accident. There seems to be no guarantee that this isn't a potential risk. I will be in contact with the Land Rover dealership locally and urge NHTSA to investigate this potential safety concern with Land Rover vehicles. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-23
  • VIN: SALRW4EUXP2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was in a parking lot adjusting settings via the touch screen when the vehicle suddenly deactivated the key fob rendering the vehicle useless. The only option was to get the spare key to start the vehicle. This presents a safety issue for all occupants if the vehicle is disabled because of a malfunction with the key, potentially leaving people stranded in a unsafe environment.

Negative 2023 Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Darrel Hammes 2025-08-24

In January 2020, I had a change of heart regarding Land Rover's failure to honor my vehicle warranty in a reasonable timeframe. My 2018 Discovery HSE LUX experienced a failed front windshield seal, which allowed significant rainwater intrusion into the cabin. This caused damage to the headliner, center console, and passenger side floorboard. Despite repeated trips to the dealer, the Vox Navigation software deficiency and other stated warranty issues remain unresolved. However, LR USA acknowledged and corrected all concerns in Spring 2020 and has most recently issued a windshield recall to correct systemic windshield/sealant issues. Despite these issues, I still love my 2018 LR Discovery, which remains a comfortable, versatile, and mechanically reliable ride. I have recently submitted a Lemon complaint to LR USA Customer Relations and am awaiting their review and feedback. For the record, the Voice Navigation system has never worked and is the absolute worst of any vehicle I have ever owned. On a positive note, my wife and I enjoyed an enjoyable and informative morning driving through the snow-covered trails during a Land Rover off-road excursion at the Biltmore Estate the winter prior to making the purchase. It's worth the time if you're new to the LR Brand. When we were ready to move into a new SUV, the LR dealer allowed us to test drive our new Discovery over a long weekend before making the decision to buy. The beautiful design and color combo caught our eye right off the showroom floor. We fell in love! It has been a great road trip and weekend getaway SUV - fun to drive, comfortable, and roomy. The HUD is very cool, and it handles well while being quiet on the road. It has plenty of power and a surprisingly smooth transmission. It is functional and has accommodated 7 adults, carried my bikes, and towed my 6500 lb boat all with equal ease. Take time to learn the infotainment system - you won't be disappointed. Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase!

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery HSE has a lot of great features. The interior is modern and upscale with beautiful light grey leather seats, dash, console, and headliner that are surprisingly easy to clean. The vehicle has lots of safety features and drives well in bad weather. The third row is a nice size and there are abundant and clever storage spaces throughout. The stereo sounds great, but can be frustrating to get working. The heated windshield and auto high beam headlights are fantastic. However, there have been some issues with the infotainment system and the vehicle has had to be serviced several times. Despite these issues, the Land Rover Discovery HSE is a great vehicle overall. The sunroof cover on the third row was rattling, but the dealership fixed it when we took it back. We had to take the car in three times for various issues, including a missing clip on one of the side panel covers in the cargo area. It was frustrating to have to go back multiple times, but the dealership eventually ordered the part and fixed the issue. After purchasing the vehicle, I noticed that the steering wheel felt heavy and the car was difficult to keep centered in the lane. Despite asking the Land Rover dealer to check the alignment and steering multiple times, they said there was nothing wrong. It was only after a year of driving that I was told the tires needed to be replaced due to uneven wear caused by misalignment. Although it was frustrating to have to pay $1300 out of pocket to replace the tires and align the vehicle, I did not have it done at the dealership. Additionally, the second row center headrest makes visibility through the rear window difficult and is hard for kids to fold down. It would be helpful if Land Rover had a control for the driver to lower the headrest. Overall, while the concept of the vehicle is good, the quality of the build and parts are unreliable and not up to par for a $70k vehicle. I have decided to trade it in for a BMW X5 and will not be purchasing another Land Rover in the future.

  3. Fritz Schroeder 2025-07-29

I recently traded my 2021 Atlas for a 2018 Discovery hse after being impressed by my client's new Discovery. I was particularly drawn to the leather, the numerous compartments, and the tailgate guard that raises and lowers. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with water leakage shortly after purchasing the vehicle. Despite calling Tom Wood Landrover three times, I was unable to speak to a live person and the issue remained unresolved. The mildew smell that followed was quite unpleasant. However, I am grateful that Carmax has offered me a full refund. It's disappointing that a luxury SUV that ticks all the high-end boxes falls short on such basic features. I do regret not keeping my Atlas, but I'm hopeful that I'll find a better fit in the future.

  4. Cesar Dickinson 2025-07-25

We have been Land Rover owners for almost 20 years. However, five years ago, we switched to Toyota (we bought a 4Runner and a Lexus SUV) because owning a Land Rover was causing too many interruptions in our lives. The service manager and I used to joke that I should park my cars at the dealership because they spent more time in the shop than in my garage. After four years of owning Toyota and Lexus, we decided to give Land Rover another chance and purchased a 2018 Discovery and a 2018 Range Rover Sport, both brand new and paid in cash. Unfortunately, after only 7,000 miles and 5 months, the Discovery has been in the shop for 18 days due to major brake, software, and AEB issues. The Range Rover Sport is also experiencing brake and software issues and has been in the shop for about 8 days. Although Land Rover products are great for snow, off-road, and daily use, we are disappointed that we are once again dealing with vehicles that have lost a significant amount of their value and require frequent visits to the service facility. The dealership has been very responsive and helpful, but we are considering trading in our Land Rovers for Ford, Toyota (Lexus), or Jeep in three years. We recommend that you avoid buying Land Rover products based on our experience.

  5. Maximus Dietrich 2025-05-29

This car is cute, but unfortunately, it has some quality issues. The racks on the hood have fallen off on me three times while driving on the freeway, and the interior is not the best. The material on the seats is not of the highest quality. Overall, I regret buying this car.

Very smooth! You'll have plenty of power and torque.

  2. Andres Gerhold 2025-07-20

Congratulations on your purchase of a certified pre-owned '19 Discovery! It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying it so much. The air suspension sounds like a fantastic feature, making towing a breeze. It's great to know that the vehicle performs well off-road and has been reliable for you. The interior, with its soft leather, must be a joy to sit in. The 7 year, 100,000 CPO warranty is a fantastic value for your money. Thank you for the tip about the HUD, it sounds like a worthwhile investment!

  3. Lorenza Kuhn 2025-06-27

The car was really nice with a lot of different features. The dealer did a great job explaining the features. Unfortunately, we had to bring it back in for an alignment and computer upgrades within 2 weeks as the software stopped working.

  4. Jarrell Gulgowski 2025-06-01

I just wanted to share how much I love my Discovery HSE! The exterior design is unique and eye-catching, which is a refreshing change from the usual cars on the road. The interior is also fantastic, with soft touch materials and high-quality fabric and seats. I personally find the tech to be great, and I don't understand why some people complain about the display screen's load times or ease of use. The handling is superb, and the vehicle feels incredibly sturdy with plenty of power and excellent visibility. There are so many great features to list, but one of my favorites is how the Disco lowers after shutting off for easy access and departure, which my wife really appreciates. I highly recommend taking a test drive to experience it for yourself!

  5. Ralph Jacobs 2025-01-07

We took a leap of faith and went for a great deal on a 2018 leftover lease for the Disco, despite potential reliability issues. I absolutely love the Diesel! The drivetrain is excellent and shared with the big dog Range Rover, making it smooth, powerful, and quiet. With an overall 25 MPG in mixed driving, this 5000lb tank is more than enough for me. The interior is beautiful and obviously spacious, with excellent LED headlights. The seats are super comfortable and the commanding seating position is a plus. At this point, we haven't had any issues, except for the less than bright interior lights and having to use an exterior EZ pass due to the heated windshield. I even like the in control app, which has worked flawlessly for us!
