The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

- Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety issue with my 2023 Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan that occurred on April [XXX] 2024. VIN: [XXX] The issue involved the steering wheel locking unexpectedly. After parking the car overnight for 15 hours, I returned to find a message indicating lane departure assist wasn't working, and the steering wheel was completely locked and inoperable. I attempted various troubleshooting steps, including changing driving modes, restarting the car, and checking for software updates, but none resolved the problem. While the car functioned normally in terms of forward and backward movement, the locked steering wheel prevented any turning ability. There were also no warning lights or error messages displayed on the dashboard. The only solution I found was to perform a hard reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 3 minutes and then reconnecting it. It's concerning that a similar issue appears to be reported by other Land Rover owners online, particularly with Defender models. [XXX] My primary concern is the possibility of this malfunction occurring while driving, which could lead to a serious accident. There seems to be no guarantee that this isn't a potential risk. - Summary: I was in a parking lot adjusting settings via the touch screen when the vehicle suddenly deactivated the key fob rendering the vehicle useless. The only option was to get the spare key to start the vehicle. This presents a safety issue for all occupants if the vehicle is disabled because of a malfunction with the key, potentially leaving people stranded in a unsafe environment.

We took a leap of faith and went for a great deal on a 2018 leftover lease for the Disco, despite potential reliability issues. I absolutely love the Diesel! The drivetrain is excellent and shared with the big dog Range Rover, making it smooth, powerful, and quiet. With an overall 25 MPG in mixed driving, this 5000lb tank is more than enough for me. The interior is beautiful and obviously spacious, with excellent LED headlights. The seats are super comfortable and the commanding seating position is a plus. At this point, we haven't had any issues, except for the less than bright interior lights and having to use an exterior EZ pass due to the heated windshield. I even like the in control app, which has worked flawlessly for us!

Hi there! Thank you for considering this car. I wanted to let you know that most of the reviews you may have seen are from the initial rollout back in 2018 and 2019, when the media system wasn't as straightforward. However, I'm happy to report that I've only experienced one minor issue with a dash latch so far. Overall, my car works great and I'm really pleased with it. Even though I only bought the 4 cylinder P300, it still works great and the gas mileage is tracked by the car by the second and on the app, which is pretty cool. I haven't had any real issues and I'm very happy with my purchase. I suspect that they've worked out a lot of the kinks in this now 5-6 year old model, so it's definitely a great value for the money. I leased the Discovery when it first came out in 2017. The SE model had a 6-cylinder engine that I absolutely loved. It had great acceleration and power, and the ride was both soft and sturdy. What I appreciated most about the ride was that it wasn't too springy like a Buick or Tahoe. The chassis absorbed a ton of road vibration and bumps, yet maintained a rigidity that made it feel controlled. Although I almost bought the car at the end of the lease, I ended up purchasing a new Defender instead. Throughout my time with the Discovery, I had zero issues with the car, except for the infotainment unit that would turn off every now and then (once a month). The blip would last maybe a few seconds, and then it would just reboot itself. Not a game changer. I drove the car hard and often and had zero complaints or mechanical issues. The engine was very reliable and efficient for a car of this size. I would definitely recommend it. I love the Discovery, but now I am a proud Defender owner!!!

I just purchased a Land Rover Discovery and I'm thrilled with it! It drives so smoothly, has quick pickup, and is incredibly spacious inside. The interior is just fantastic!

How has it been treating you? It's been about four months since you purchased it, so I hope everything is going smoothly.

The infotainment system in this car is a huge leap forward and on par with the best. The space in the vehicle is incredible and combined with the strong engine, it feels very capable. The ride is good and fuel economy is impressive, with an excellent cruising range. I have about 7000 miles under my belt and the visibility is outstanding. Although the start/stop feature requires a two-step menu-driven action to turn off, which is a slight annoyance, it is still a great car. Please note that this is the top of the line trim with the V6, not the four-cylinder. I had a very good dealership sales experience, but the service experience was not as good. I am used to next-day service with Lexus, but with Land Rover, it is more like three-week appointments. Despite this, the car is so much more enjoyable than the Lexus GX we had, with much better MPG and a hugely bigger gas tank. However, I have experienced some electrical issues and have 3 outstanding recalls that need to be resolved. I am not sure why, but the rear tailgate opens and closes on its own, not while driving though. I had an ongoing issue with the CEL going on after a few weeks, but they looked at it and said it was fixed by replacing an O2 sensor. The light came back on two weeks later, then on and off every once in a while. Now, it is magically staying off. The build quality is below average to only fair, but the car is still a great choice.

In 2007, I purchased my first Land Rover, an 04 Disco with 30xxx miles. I was really impressed with the ruggedness and overall coolness of the vehicle. However, after a year and a half, it turned into a nightmare. The oil pump blew on the freeway and totally destroyed the engine, which was the first engine failure of any vehicle I had previously owned. It shook me pretty bad and I stayed away from Land Rovers for 18 years. Recently, the new Discovery caught my eye and I thought for sure Land Rover had changed as far as reliability goes. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. I purchased my 2019 Discovery SE with 26000 miles on it and the first thing to happen was tires wearing quicker than normal and alignment issues. The next thing was the car going into limp mode at low RPMs. I took it to Land Rover and they said it was the catalytic Converter. They had the car for 4 weeks due to the part being on backorder. This was done at 37k miles. At 43k, I was driving low RPMs through a subdivision and the engine started hesitating. I pulled over, got it towed, and sure enough, it needs a new engine. Unfortunately, the car is out of warranty now and the price I was given was $22,000. Needless to say, I won't be buying a Land Rover again.

This car has unfortunately been a very disappointing purchase. However, it is important to note that many of the issues I experienced occurred after the warranty had expired. Despite this, I have had to replace the windshield twice due to water leaks, and the console cooler stopped working at only 50k miles despite minimal use. Additionally, there have been issues with oil leaks, the hood cable has had to be replaced twice before 60k miles, and there have been numerous software updates required to fix glitches such as screens randomly going black, slow touchscreen response, and freezing infotainment. The sunroof motor also had to be replaced before 60k miles, and there have been multiple DEF errors. The car also seems to go through tires quickly, although this may be due to the quality of the Continental tires. There have also been issues with the seat belt assembly and more oil leaks. It is worth noting that LR has installed two protective plates underneath the car to conceal the plastic connected to metal components. Overall, while this has not been a positive experience, it is important to consider the age of the car and the fact that many of these issues occurred after the warranty had expired.
