2006 Suzuki Aerio problems

suzuki logo

The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

Common 2006 Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio, produced from 2001 to 2007, has been known to have a variety of issues, as reported by its owners. This article will discuss some of the most common problems with the 2006 Suzuki Aerio, based on the search results.

  • Engine Electrical Failure: Some owners of the 2006 Suzuki Aerio have reported experiencing severe failures, which they describe as if it were a spark plugs failure. Specifically, the coil number 3 is not working, but when changed to the coil number 1, it works, and the number 3 does not. This issue may be caused by a problem with the ignition system or the engine control module (ECM).
  • Transmission Issues: A common problem with the 2006 Suzuki Aerio is that the gear can not change automatically, and the gear is at one place. This issue may be caused by a problem with the transmission control module (TCM), the transmission solenoids, or the clutch system.
  • Fuel System Issues: Some owners of the 2006 Suzuki Aerio have reported that the vehicle suddenly loses power and stalls, and when starting it again, the computer is burnt. This issue may be caused by a problem with the fuel pump, the fuel injectors, or the ECM.
  • Electrical System Issues: The failure light indicator turns on when the engine is working, and it does not turn off even after the engine is turned off and restarted. This issue may be caused by a problem with the idle speed sensor, the ECM, or the wiring harness.
  • Suspension Issues: Some owners of the 2006 Suzuki Aerio have reported that the shock absorbers are damaged, even though they were replaced less than a year ago. This issue may be caused by a problem with the suspension system or the steering system.
  • Vibration Issues: The 2006 Suzuki Aerio may vibrate terribly at idle, mainly in park at 1000 RPMs. This issue may be caused by a problem with the engine mounts, the transmission mount, or the drivetrain system.
  • Brakes Issues: The Aerio ranks 5th in reliability out of 12 Suzuki models, and owners have made 17 complaints over 6 model years, mostly about brakes issues. This issue may be caused by a problem with the brake system, the brake pads, or the brake rotors.

These are some of the most common problems with the 2006 Suzuki Aerio, based on the search results. It is important to note that not all vehicles of this model will experience these issues, and some may have more severe problems than others. If you own a 2006 Suzuki Aerio and are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended to consult with a certified mechanic or Suzuki dealership for further assistance.

  • Summary: ABOUT 1-1-1/2 MONTHS AGO A SQUEAL DEVELOPED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE OF OUR 2006 SUZUKI - CURRENTLY AT 29,000+ MILES. MY HUSBAND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO SOLD US THE CAR AND AN EXAMINATION WAS DONE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE SERPENTINE BELT WAS GLAZED AND THAT IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. HE SAID THE BELT COULD BE TIGHTENED BY REMOVING A PANEL. IF IT WAS THE PULLEY THAT WAS DEFECTIVE IT WOULD BE REPLACED AND WE COULD BUY THE BELTS AT THAT TIME FROM THE DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT. HE INDICATED TO MY HUSBAND THAT IT WOULD BE ABOUT $155-$165 TO HAVE THE BELTS REPLACED. WHEN ASKED WHAT OTHER CUSTOMERS DID, HE SAID THEY HAD THE BELTS REPLACED OR THEY JUST "LIVED WITH" THE SQUEALING. I HAVE FRANKLY NEVER HAD A CAR THAT HAS HAD BELT ISSUES, AND CLEARLY THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER CUSTOMERS, SO YOUNG IN THE MILEAGE LIFE OF MY VEHICLE. *TR

BY DECEMBER OF 2006, I BEGAN HEARING SQUEAKY NOISES AND THIS LOUD ANNOYING SOUND, WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT IT NEEDED BRAKE PADS ALREADY, ONLY ADDING ANOTHER 1000 MILES WITHIN THOSE FEW MONTHS. THE BRAKES ARE SPECIAL ORDER AND COST ME 120.00. I HAD THEM PUT ON BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME EVEN WITH MY 10 YEAR 100,000 MILE WARRANTY, BRAKES ARE NOT COVERED UNDER IT! WELL IN JULY 2007, THE SAME NOISE AGAIN, I SAID NO WY IT COULDN'T BE THE BRAKES, SURE ENOUGH AGAIN THE BRAKES. IN LEAST THAN 1.5 YEARS I HAVE CHANGED THE BRAKES ON THIS CAR TWO TIMES, NOW MY CAR ACTS AS IF THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING AND I WAS INFORMED BY TWO MECHANICS THAT I NEED TO HAVE A TRANSMISSION FLUSH BECAUSE OF HOW BLACK IT LOOKS AND THAT IS THE REASON MY CAR IS FEELING AS THOUGH IT IS SLIPPING! I CAN'T UNDERSTAND SUCH A NICE CAR WITH SUCH A GOOD WARRANTY YET SO MANY PROBLEMS! *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-01
  • VIN: JS2RC61H065
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT BEGAN COMING ON RANDOMLY FROM TIME TO TIME. IT THEN BEGAN TO COME ON WHEN I TURNED LEFT, THEN BEGAN TO LIGHT UP WHEN I USED THE BRAKES, THEN STAYED ON ALL THE TIME. MY BROTHER AND I BOTH OWN 2006 AERIOS AND BOTH HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AT THE SAME TIME. HE TOOK HIS TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD BE WARRANTY SERVICE. TURNS OUT THE BRAKES HAD WORN OUT AT 18,000 MILES! HE PAID $200 TO HAVE HIS REPLACED. BEING A FORMER MECHANIC, I DECIDED TO SIDESTEP THE EXORBITANT COST OF HAVING A DEALER REPLACE MY BRAKES PLANNED TO DO THE JOB MYSELF. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE NO PART STORES THAT CARRY REPLACEMENT PADS FOR MY CAR. I WENT TO A DEALERSHIP AND WAS ASKED TO PAY $150 JUST FOR THE PADS! INSTEAD, I WENT TO A LOCAL TIRE/BRAKE SHOP AND, IN THE INTEREST OF SAVING TIME AND ENDING THE RUNAROUND, I ENDED UP PAYING THE $200 TO HAVE MY BRAKE PADS REPLACED AT 18,000 MILES. *JB

  • Summary: 2ND TIME REPLACING BRAKES, 35,000 MILES ON CAR, IT STILL IS NEW , 1 YEAR OLD. DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, NO RECALL BEING MADE. HAVE ALREADY CONTACTED A LAWYER IN REGARD TO THIS MATTER, SHOWING ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. SUZUKI REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON WHATSOEVER THAT I SHOULD BE REPLACING THE BRAKES ON MY CAR FOR A SECOND TIME IN 1 YEAR. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR SOMEONE FROM SUZUKI TO GET OFF THEIR BACKS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM? I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER SUZUKI AGAIN FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE , AND I WILL MAKE SURE THAT ANYONE I KNOW WILL NOT EITHER. *AK

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-08-03
  • VIN: JS2RD61H165
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE THE BRAKES CHECKED AT ABOUT 9,000 MILES IN MAY. THERE WAS A HOT SMELL AND A LOT OF BRAKE DUST AROUND THE RIM AND TIRES. THE SUZUKI DEALER SERVICE DEPT. SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEMS JUST NEEDED BRAKE FLUID ADDED. AT THAT TIME THE PADS WERE AT HALF WAY. BUT THIS WAS DISMISSED. ON AUGUST 3RD I BEGAN TO HEAR SQUEALING ESPECIALLY WHEN I WOULD PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. I TOOK IT IN TO ANOTHER TIRE PLACE TO HAVE THE TIRE REPAIRED, THE MEN SAID THE BRAKES SOUNDED BAD. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THERE WAS A BRAKE PROBLEM OTHER THAN THE NOISE. I FEEL THAT THE BRAKES FEEL VERY TIGHT WHEN I AM IN REVERSE ALMOST LIKE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS ON. I WAS SENT TO THE DEALER SINCE I ONLY HAD 14,100 MILES ON THE CAR AND IT WAS SIX MONTHS OLD. THE MAN AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WOULD CHECK THE HISTORY. IT WAS OVER THE 12,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE SERVICE MANAGER LATER CALLED ME TO TELL ME THAT THE BRAKE PADS WERE WORN COMPLETELY ON THE FRONT AND SHE WOULD ORDER THE PADS FOR ME. I ASKED IF IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAD IT IN AT 9,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD NO, THAT BRAKES WEAR DIFFERENTLY ON DIFFERENT CARS AND BASICALLY I WAS ROUGH ON MY BRAKES. THERE WAS NO OFFER TO INVESTIGATE, OR CONCEDE THAT IS WAS UNUSUAL FOR BRAKES TO WEAR THAT QUICKLY. MY HUSBAND DID RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND MANY ISSUES WITH BRAKE PROBLEMS ON THE SAME CAR. AFTER REFUSING REPEATEDLY TO ACCEPT THIS AS MY FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS ABLE TO GET A "ONE TIME GOOD WILL" REPLACEMENT OF MY BRAKES. IT HAS BEEN 12 DAYS AND I AM STILL WAITING TO HAVE THE BRAKES REPAIRED. I FEEL THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM SOMEWHERE IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM THAT LEADS TO THE PADS BEING WORN DOWN SO QUICKLY. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE AND INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER ESPECIALLY AFTER READING SO MANY OTHER SIMILAR AND MORE SEVERE COMPLAINTS. THE MOST COMMON OPINION I AM FINDING IS THAT THE CALIPERS ARE TOO BIG AND TOO TIGHT ON THE BRAKE PADS. *JB

  • Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE ON NOV 2, 2005. TWO MONTHS LATER THE CAR WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT SO I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP TO GET THAT RECTIFIED. EXACTLY 7 DAYS LATER IT WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AGAIN SO I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM AND AFTER I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT THIS IS NOT COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. I PAID OVER $50 TO GET THE CAR ALIGNED AGAIN. IN JUNE AND JUST TODAY (AUG 15, 06) I TOOK IT TO SEARS FOR ALIGNMENT AGAIN. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME IN 10 MONTHS I HAD TO TAKE THIS CAR BACK FOR ALIGNMENT. THE TIRES ARE WEARING EXCESSIVELY. THE FRONT BRAKES VIBRATE AT 40 MPH AND OF COURSE, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ALSO NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. EVEN WITHOUT EVEN TEST DRIVING THE CAR. AMAZING. TO FIX IT, IT WILL COST ME ANOTHER $160 BECAUSE THE BRAKE PADS ALONE, SUPPOSEDLY COST $120. LET ME TELL YOU THIS, I CAME BACK TO SUZUKI BECAUSE I WAS THE PROUD OWNER OF A CHEVY SPRINT RS 1985 MADE BY SUZUKI AND I HAD IT FOR 10 YEAR WITH NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. MAYBE THAT WAS TOO MUCH LUCK BUT 4 ALIGNMENTS IN 10 MONTHS IS DEFENITLY NOT THE QUALITY I WAS EXPECTING FROM SUZUKI. I WILL GET RID OF THIS CAR AS SOON AS I CAN AND GUESS WHAT, I'M PASSING THE WORD ABOUT THE AEREO'S DEFICIENCIES TO. *JB

2006 Suzuki Aerio recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2006 Suzuki Aerio.

2007-07-15
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, DUE TO IMPROPER SHAPE OF THE CLIP, THE RETAINING CLIP THAT KEEPS THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE ATTACHED TO THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER CAN CONTACT THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER HOUSING IF EXCESSIVE LATERAL FORCE IS APPLIED WHEN SHIFTING TO FIRST GEAR.
  • Consequence: REPEATED SHIFTING IN THIS MANNER CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE RETAINING CLIP TO BREAK. IF THE RETAINING CLIP BREAKS, THE SHIFT CABLE CAN BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE SHIFT LEVER, RESULTING IN LOSS OF THE ABILITY TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION GEARS.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE RETAINING CLIP WITH A CLIP THAT HAS A DIFFERENT SHAPE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 13, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AMERICAN SUZUKI AT 1-800-934-0934.

Negative 2006 Suzuki Aerio car reviews

I almost bought a Subaru RS instead of my Suzuki Aerio. I'm glad that I didn't. I saved a lot of money and now I own the best mountain dirt road long distance commuter I've ever had. I'm still in the honeymoon stage though, so I'll need some time to be more objective.

Positive 2006 Suzuki Aerio car reviews

I've owned my Suzuki Aerio SX for 5 years and have driven it for over 80k miles. During this time, I've taken it through ice/snow storms, high heat, and across the country twice. I'm happy to report that this little car has been incredibly reliable. In fact, I've only needed to change the fluids (and not always on schedule), replace the tires twice, and get new brakes at 75k miles. The body still looks brand new, although the bumpers are a little flimsy and may crack if you hit something high. The interior is of very high quality, especially compared to the cheap materials used in cars today. After over 80,000 miles, it's still running like the day I bought it and the body is still solid. I'm impressed by how well this inexpensive car has held up, even with the hard driving it's endured.

I had a couple of TSBs to take care of on my Suzuki Aerio, but since then the car has been great! I'm getting better than the rated mpg and I love the amount of room it has for such a small car. Although the interior may seem a little weak or 'cheap', the rest of the car is fantastic.

  3. Rodolfo Skiles 2024-10-20

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying the ride in the Aerio! The 2.3L engine certainly provides plenty of power. I also appreciate the solid sound the car makes when you close the door. Additionally, there is plenty of room inside, which is always a plus.

  4. Ryann Torp 2024-10-19

Your Suzuki Aerio seems to be a great value for its price range. The audio and other features are of good quality. The 2006 model has semi-soft dash plastics which is a nice upgrade. The tires may pick up some road noise, but replacing them could help. Compared to its peers, like the MINI Cooper and Scion Xa, it is a bit narrow and has a slightly smaller track, which can cause a bit more roll and slightly less handling. However, the Aerio's engine and wealth of features make it a much better choice in its class.

  5. Johathan Doyle 2024-10-17

My Aerio's gas mileage started out at about 20 mpg highway, but after 3,000 miles it's up to 25 mpg. I'm so happy with how dependable this car has been! Plus, I always get compliments on its comfort and style from lots of people.
