2004 Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

Common 2004 Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio, a compact car produced from 2001 to 2007, has been reported to have several common issues, particularly in the 2001-2004 model years. One of the most frequent problems is excessive oil consumption and oil leaks. This issue can be serious, as it can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. The cause of this problem is often attributed to worn-out piston rings or valve seals, which can be replaced to fix the issue.

Another common issue reported by owners of the 2001-2004 Suzuki Aerio is engine misfires. This problem can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Engine misfires can result in reduced engine performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. To diagnose and fix this issue, a thorough inspection of the engine's ignition and fuel systems is required.

Transmission problems are also a common issue reported by Suzuki Aerio owners, particularly in the 2001-2004 model years. These problems can manifest as difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, or a complete transmission failure. The cause of transmission problems can be attributed to worn-out clutch components, low transmission fluid levels, or a malfunctioning torque converter. To diagnose and fix transmission problems, a thorough inspection of the transmission system is required, which may include replacing worn-out components or repairing damaged parts.

In addition to these common issues, the Suzuki Aerio has also been reported to have problems with the brakes, particularly in the 2005 model year. Premature brake wear and brake failure have been reported by owners, which can be caused by various factors, including worn-out brake pads, damaged brake rotors, or a malfunctioning brake system. To diagnose and fix brake problems, a thorough inspection of the brake system is required, which may include replacing worn-out components or repairing damaged parts.

In summary, the Suzuki Aerio has several common issues reported by owners, particularly in the 2001-2004 model years. These issues include excessive oil consumption and oil leaks, engine misfires, transmission problems, and brake issues. To diagnose and fix these issues, a thorough inspection of the affected systems is required, which may include replacing worn-out components or repairing damaged parts. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from occurring and ensure the longevity and reliability of the Suzuki Aerio.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-01
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JS2RB61S345
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I OWN A 2004 SUZUKI AERIO AWD. THE CAR SEEMED ON THE BRINK OF HYDROPLANING AT LOW RATES OF SPEED. AT 14,000 MILES THE REAR TIRES WERE COMPLETELY BALD AND I PURCHASED 4 NEW TIRES. THE DEALERSHIP ATTRIBUTED THIS TO LACK OF ROTATION. LOCAL TIRE SHOPS STATED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL CAR. A FULL ALIGNMENT WAS PERFORMED AND REGULAR ROTATION RECOMMENDED. I HAD THE CAR ALIGNED AND TIRES ROTATED EVERY 5,00 MILES. AGAIN, I PURCHASED 4 NEW TIRES AT 42,000 MILES AFTER SLIDING OFF THE ROAD AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED (LESS THAN 10 MPH) AND INTO A CURB. THE CONDITIONS WERE SLIPPERY AND SNOWY. AT 50,000 MILES, I HAD MY CAR INSPECTED AND A TIRE IS STARTING TO WEAR ON THE OUTSIDE RIM AT AN UNUSUAL RATE. THIS COMPROMISES THE BELT AND TRACTION OF THE TIRES. THIS CAR IS A MAJOR HAZARD BECAUSE IT MAY NOT EVEN ABLE TO GO 12 MONTHS BETWEEN INSPECTIONS OR 3 MONTHS BETWEEN OIL CHANGES WITHOUT TIRES GOING BALD OR BLOWING OUT. THERE HAS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW CAUSING THE TIRES TO WEAR AT UNUSUALLY HIGH RATES: EITHER THE TIRE SIZE OR SURROUNDING STRUCTURES. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION. I WOULD HAVE PURCHASED A SAFER CAR BUT CANNOT FINANCIALLY DO SO AT THIS TIME. THE CAR HAS NOT HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS ACCEPT A FEW COSMETIC ISSUES. PLEASE REVIEW THIS CLAIM. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TIRE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE FACTORY IMPROPERLY ALIGNING THE VEHICLE'S REAR END. CURRENTLY, THE CONTACT NEEDS TO HAVE THE FRONT TIRES AND BUSHINGS REPLACED FOR THE SAME FAILURE. THE ENGINE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 18,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000. AT 12,000 MILES ALL 4 TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE TREAD WAS WEARING OUT. THE CONTACT THOUGHT THAT THE TIRES WERE FAULTY SO SHE REPLACED THEM WITH 4 NEW MICHELIN TIRES. AT 14,000 MILES THE TREAD WAS WEARING OUT ON ALL 4 TIRES. THE CONTACT TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A REAR ALIGNMENT, AND THAT THEY WOULD ALSO REPLACE ALL THE TIRES. THEY REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES WITH MICHELIN TIRES, AND AT 12,000 MILES THE CONTACT TOOK EHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY STATED THAT BOTH REAR TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-01-23
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JS2RB61S345
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: MY REAR ALIGNMENT IS OFF SO IN OCTOBER OF 2005 I TOOK IT IN TO GET FIXED AS MY REAR TIRES APPEARED TO BE WEARING AT AN UNUSUAL RATE AND PATTERN. PROBLEM WAS SAID TO BE IN SOME SUZUKI AERIO'S BUT WAS SAID TO BE FIXED. THE SPECS WERE OFF AND HAD TO BE RESET AND REAR TIRES WARRANTED. ON JANUARY 5TH I TOOK CAR IN TO GET OIL CHANGED AND ROTATION OF TIRES. THEY WOULD NOT ROTATE AS BACK TIRES WERE WORN AND THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK WHERE I GOT IT FIXED THE PREVIOUS TIME. ON JANUARY 20TH REAR ALIGNMENT FIXED AGAIN AND THIS TIME THEY HAD TO BEND SOMETHING (A STRUT ?) IN ORDER TO GET THE SPECS RIGHT ON THE CAR. I WENT OFF THE ROAD WHEN I RETURNED HOME AND WENT INTO A DITCH. NO DAMAGE. THEN ON JANUARY 31TH NEW TIRES PUT ON THE FRONT AND OLD ONES ROTATED TO THE BACK. THE OLD ONES WERE FROM OCTOBER AND WERE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION PER SUZUKI DEALERSHIP. THE TIRES ARE AGAIN WORN TO THE POINT OF UNSAFE. I CAN NOT DRIVE ON DRY ROADS WITHOUT HAVING A PROBLEM. THIS HAS BECOME A SAFETY DEFECT AND THE ONLY WAY TO CORRECT IT IS FOR ME TO BUY NEW TIRES EVERY MONTH. THE TIRES WORN DOWN COMPLETELY FROM EXCELLENT TO SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING ON THEM IN 2,000 MILES AND JUST OVER A MONTH. *JB

2004 Suzuki Aerio recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2004 Suzuki Aerio.

2007-07-15
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, DUE TO IMPROPER SHAPE OF THE CLIP, THE RETAINING CLIP THAT KEEPS THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE ATTACHED TO THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER CAN CONTACT THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER HOUSING IF EXCESSIVE LATERAL FORCE IS APPLIED WHEN SHIFTING TO FIRST GEAR.
  • Consequence: REPEATED SHIFTING IN THIS MANNER CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE RETAINING CLIP TO BREAK. IF THE RETAINING CLIP BREAKS, THE SHIFT CABLE CAN BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE SHIFT LEVER, RESULTING IN LOSS OF THE ABILITY TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION GEARS.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE RETAINING CLIP WITH A CLIP THAT HAS A DIFFERENT SHAPE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 13, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AMERICAN SUZUKI AT 1-800-934-0934.

Negative 2004 Suzuki Aerio car reviews

  1. Gayle Larson 2024-08-13

Although this was my first *NEW* car and it was very affordable, I must admit that I am not satisfied with it. The car handles poorly, the interior is of cheap quality, and there is very limited storage space. Additionally, the windshield wipers move either too fast or too slow, and the build is not very aerodynamic, which makes for a shaky ride. However, I am confident that with some improvements, this car can be made to meet my expectations.

Positive 2004 Suzuki Aerio car reviews

  1. Reid Kuphal 2024-11-13

I've had my Aerio SX for 14 months now and I absolutely love it! If I had to make the choice again, I would definitely buy the exact same car. It fits my needs perfectly, especially when it comes to carrying my agility dog around while still having plenty of room for passengers. After researching other wagons, I found that the Aerio SX was far superior in meeting my needs. It's not only practical, but also fun and comfortable to drive. Suzuki really hit the mark with the design of this car!

  2. Jeramie Walker 2024-11-08

After my wife's Escort was rendered undriveable in an accident, we were on the lookout for a replacement that was both economical and had a bit of pizzazz. Unfortunately, our budget didn't allow for a Corolla or Civic, and we didn't feel the same warmth towards a Hyundai or Kia. However, as soon as we sat in the Aerio, we knew it was the one for us. The headroom is massive, with enough space to accommodate even a six-foot-tall person with inches to spare. The car comes with a plethora of standard features, including AC, a 6-disc CD player, power windows and locks, and heated mirrors. We're averaging almost 30 MPG, and the power is simply exhilarating. Buckle up and hang on!

  3. Pietro Langworth 2024-10-28

I drove my Aerio from Washington state to Texas and back. On each drive, we averaged about 32 miles to the gallon. In town, I get about 30-40 miles per gallon. The Aerio was a comfortable car, and hardly anyone had seen one yet, which made it that much more fun!

  4. Bailey Stiedemann 2024-10-21

This car has a great stereo system and a powerful engine. It's a very lovable car and is loaded with features. It is very smooth riding and is a joy to just be in. I love it.

  5. Pete Green 2024-10-08

I'm thrilled with my Aerio! Although I was initially hesitant about buying a Suzuki since I've never owned one before, I'm so glad I took the chance. I was surprised to see lukewarm reviews on Edmunds, but after reading other great reviews and test driving it myself, I knew it was the right choice. I traded in my '02 Elantra for the Aerio, which was comfortable, a good value, and a great performer. However, the Aerio has more personality, horsepower, and better safety scores. As for the handling being described as 'sloppy,' I disagree. While it may lean a bit more than the Elantra due to its taller profile, it still grips the road just as well. The steering feel is similar, nimble without being too light. Plus, getting in and out of the Aerio is easier. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!
