The Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport compact car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru, originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental". Starting with the 2015 models, the WRX lineup has been split from the Impreza, with a different body style that is not offered as an optional hatchback/wagon, being introduced as the separate Levorg model.

Impreza-based models (1992–2014)

The first three generations of the WRX, sold until the 2015 model year, were based on standard Impreza platforms, and replaced the Subaru RX hatchback and sedan.

The initial first-generation WRX models were based on the Impreza sedan (GC chassis code). They were followed by wagons (GF) in 1993 and the first upgraded WRX STi version, introduced in 1994. Several limited edition first-generation coupés were offered in the late 1990s and early 2000s which were never sold in the US and are highly sought after by Subaru enthusiasts.

The second-generation WRX (GD/GG chassis codes for the sedan/wagon, respectively) was brought over to the United States domestic market for model year 2002, with the STI being brought over for model year 2004. The initial "bugeye" front end styling (2000) was superseded by the "blobeye" in 2004 and the "hawkeye" in 2006. Under an agreement between Fuji Heavy Industries and General Motors, Saab sold its own version of the WRX, marketed as the Saab 9-2X, for the 2005 and 2006 model years. The 9-2X was available in both a standard (Linear) and performance (Aero) package, the latter was essentially identical to the second-generation WRX wagon, mechanically.

The third-generation WRX were sold as chassis codes GE (sedan) and GH (hatchback, replacing the earlier wagon version) initially; the third-generation WRX STI was sold with a widened chassis and was available only as a widebody hatch (GR). For the 2011 model year, the third-generation WRX sedan and hatch were moved to the GV and GR wide-body chassis variants, respectively, and a widebody sedan version of the STI (GV) was marketed. The Impreza was redesigned and the fourth-generation was first marketed for model year 2012, making it a distinct model from the WRX, which continued on the third-generation GV/GR chassis until 2014 in most markets.

The fourth-generation WRX were given the VA chassis designation and marketed as a separate model from the Impreza starting in 2015.

Common 2017 Subaru Wrx problems

The 2017 Subaru WRX has been reported to have several engine issues, including loud clunking noises, shaking and grinding engines, and engines that lose power while in motion. These problems have not been addressed by any safety recalls from the manufacturer, leaving many customers without effective solutions.

One common issue reported is that the engine can die when the car comes to a stop, which has happened multiple times to some owners. This issue has been difficult to diagnose, and dealers have been unable to find a solution.

Another problem reported is that the car can shut down completely while in motion, which has happened on two occasions to one driver. This has forced the driver to steer the vehicle to safety to avoid collisions.

The 2017 Subaru WRX has also been reported to have engine, drivetrain, and electrical system problems. These issues are not common among many owners, but they have been reported and can be concerning for those who experience them.

The worst issues recorded for the 2017 Subaru WRX include premature clutch failure at just 6,000 miles, a throw-out bearing noise at 9,000 miles, and a squealing noise at 25,000 miles.

In addition to these issues, the 2017 Subaru WRX has been reported to have problems with the CAN system parasitic drain on the battery, rodents chewing on the soy wires, and Subaru EyeSight problems.

The CAN system parasitic drain on the battery can cause the car to not start due to a dead battery, even though the batteries are not defective. This issue has been reported by many owners of newer Subaru vehicles.

Rodents are attracted to the soy-derived wire coatings used in many Subaru vehicles, and they can cause costly repairs by chewing on the wires. Subaru has not acknowledged this as a defect, but it has caused hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repairs for some owners.

Subaru's EyeSight technology has been known to have problems, particularly in bad weather driving. While newer versions have improved, the system is generally regarded as bulky and an overly expensive upgrade on higher trim levels.

In summary, the 2017 Subaru WRX has been reported to have several engine issues, including loud clunking noises, shaking and grinding engines, and engines that lose power while in motion. These problems have not been addressed by any safety recalls from the manufacturer, leaving many customers without effective solutions. Other issues reported include premature clutch failure, a throw-out bearing noise, a squealing noise, problems with the CAN system parasitic drain on the battery, rodents chewing on the soy wires, and Subaru EyeSight problems.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-05
  • VIN: JF1VA1E64H9
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have a 2017 Subaru WRX that stalls while driving (including at highway speeds) 2 to 3 times every day on my commute to work through the mountains. This has led the vehicle to skid sideways and lose control. When I looked into this problem, I found that Subaru has a recall on its fuel pumps for 2018 to 2020 Subaru WRX vehicles but somehow my VIN does not appear to be considered AN affected vehicle. This issue is life-threatening, and I believe the model years eligible for recall, must not have captured one year earlier model with presumably the same faulty fuel pump. I believe the recall needs to be expanded.

  • VIN: JF1VA1E6XH8
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

This issue then results in the sudden loss of power and engine stalls (often when attempting to accelerate from low speeds) which are extremely dangerous when attempting to merge or turn in traffic. Subaru has not addressed the issue but based on online searches it appears to be a major issue for all 2.0l direct injection engines.

The battery died overnight and I had to jump the car to get it to the dealership. This happened again and the battery replaced at the dealership on 9/29/2022. This time the battery got weaker each time I started the car over a period of 3 days then one day it didn't start. I had to jump to get to the dealership. They reaplaced the battery and I said I didn't want to pay because this is the 2nd time it's been replaced in 4 years. He told me to join a class action settlement for defective batteries.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I had parked my car in front of my house and did not use it for 2 days. When I went to drive the car, it with not turn on. I had to call AAA to jump the car and I let it run for 30 minutes then drive it for the next 30 minutes. I parked the car again and 6 hours later went to go out and it would not start again. Called AAA again and had them come jump start the car. Both AAA mechanics said this is a problematic battery. I went to my Subaru dealer in Rye, NY and they said my battery is fine and I had a loose negative terminal. This was a lie and incorrect. The battery was first put it on 7/15/2019 and this was less than 2 years later that it died on me twice. I have service documents from the car dealer for the battery install and the recent service to check the battery as well as AAA to vouch for my calls to them.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-03
  • VIN: JF1VA1N66H8
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAVE ISSUES WITH SURGING, AC SYSTEM, SUSPENSION, EXTREME TIRE WEAR, TIRES WEAR UNEVENLY, STEERING ASSIST, INABILITY TO ALIGN STEERING, WINDOWS ROLL DOWN FOR NO REASON AND WON'T ROLL BACK UP UNLESS YOU ROLL THEM ALL THE WAY DOWN AND THEN UP BUT THEY USUALLY JUST ROLL BACK DOWN HALF WAY AGAIN (IT'S A BATTLE!) WINDOWS SCRATCH JUST FROM DUST SO THEY LOOK HAZY AND WINDSHIELDS COST ALMOST $2000 WITH ALL SAFETY CAMERA JUNK. ONLY ONE AIRCON VENT BLOWS COLD AIR WHILE ALL OTHERS JUST BLOW AIR. THIS CAR WAS A LEMON BEFORE 2018 ENDED. SUBARU REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEMS WHILE UNDER EXTENDED BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. I TRIED TO FILE LEMON LAW AND LOST BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T SAVE MY COMPLAINT VISITS IN COMPUTER SYSTEM. IM CERTAIN THAT WAS INTENTIONAL SINCE THEY ARE THE LEMON KINGS! SUBARU IS A TERRIBLE COMPANY NOW AND I RECOMMEND YOU DON'T OWN ONE. THE SURGING IS VERY DANGEROUS AS THE CAR LITERALLY HOPS AND SOMETIMES YOU PUSH ACCELERATOR AND NOTHING HAPPENS FOR WAY TOO LONG. DANGEROUS WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. FIGHTING WITH WINDOWS WHILE DRIVING IS ALSO DANGEROUS. LED LIGHTS ARE THE WRONG COLOR SO IT'S HARD TO SEE MANY THINGS AT NIGHT. THE BATTERY IS JUNK OPEN TOP AND LEAKS ACID EVERYWHERE ROTTING OUT THE BATTERY TRAY. FOR $42,000 YOU WOULD EXPECT A MUCH BETTER CAR.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-04
  • VIN: JF1VA1E63H9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: BOUGHT THE CAR AND EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM DEALER USED WITH 33K MILES 11/21/19 A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE I WAS GETTING ONTO THE FREEWAY AFTER WORK (6AM) AND THE RPMS WERE GOING UP BUT MY SPEED WAS NOT. CAR HAD 38K MILES. I PERSONALLY ONLY HAD 4K MILES SINCE OWNERSHIP AND I WOULDN'T THINK THE CLUTCH WAS SHOT DUE BEING A REGULAR MANUAL DRIVER. I USE THE VEHICLE TO COMMUTE ABOUT 40-50 MILES DAILY. 3/4/20 WAS THE DAY I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALER DID NOTHING TO HELP FINANCIALLY. CALLED SOA AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD HELP PARTIALLY PAY FOR THE REPAIR. 13K MILES AFTER THE CLUTCH REPLACEMENT THROW OUT BEARING STARTED CHIRPING WHEN CLUTCH WASN'T ENGAGED. 2/26/2021 - AFTER AN OIL CHANGE I NOTCED A FLUID ON THE BOTTOM OF MY TRANSMISSION AND WENT ONLINE LOOKING TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG. IN MY SEARCH FOR THAT I FOUND SUBARU SERVICE BULLETINS AND SEEN INFORMATION THAT THEY HAD BETTER PARTS THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO INSTALL ON 2015-18 WRXS. I WAS NOT OFFERED ANY OTHER OPTIONS OTHER THAN PAY FOR REPLACEMENT OR DRIVE IT BROKEN. AFTER FINDING OUT THAT INFORMATION I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS THEN INFORMED THAT FOR THE CLUTCH PARTS, IT'S ONLY FOR PROBLEMS OCCURRING IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS, AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY WERE GOING TO DO FOR ME. AS FOR THE THROW OUT BEARING I WAS TOLD IF I BROUGHT IT IN WITHIN 12K MILES FROM THE REPLACEMENT THEY COULD HAVE FIXED IT, BUT SINCE I'M AT 53K MILES (15K MILES SINCE REPLACEMENT) ONCE AGAIN, NOTHING. AS FOR THE FLUID ON THE TRANSMISSION THEY ROUTED IT TO THE CV AXLE AND ACCORDING TO THE PAPERWORK IT WAS DEEMED "ACCEPTABLE" PER SUBARU. I'VE OWNED A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE SINCE 2007 AND NEVER HAD ANY CLUTCH ISSUES THAT I'VE HAD WITH THIS CAR. AND BEING TOLD THAT SQUEEKS AND LEAKS ARE ACCEPTABLE IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING.

CAR WAS PARKED IN A DRIVEWAY PRIOR TO THE CRACK APPEARING.

Negative 2017 Subaru Wrx car reviews

  1. Braulio Smitham 2024-08-27

I purchased a brand new Subaru WRX 2017 and unfortunately, I have had a few issues with it. The battery failed twice within the first year, and the clutch also failed prematurely at 40,000 km. Unfortunately, the clutch was not covered under warranty and I had to pay $1500 out of pocket. Recently, the car has been experiencing issues with the AC unit and brakes, which is frustrating. Despite my disappointment, I have decided to sell the car. While I have owned seven cars in my life, this has been the first time I have experienced such issues. I have never had any problems with my Honda, VW, Acura, Nissan, BMW, Lexus, or Toyota. I hope to find a more reliable car in the future.

  2. Jerad Metz 2024-08-17

In July 2016, I purchased my first brand new car, a 2017 Subaru WRX. Unfortunately, in March 2017, after only 12,000 miles, I noticed a vibration in 4th gear. I immediately brought the car to Patriot Subaru, where they pulled the transmission to correct the issue under warranty. Although the transmission was fixed, a week later, it started to whine when accelerating. I brought the car back to the dealership, where it was determined that the majority of my transmission needed to be replaced. This occurred on April 25th. Unfortunately, the car is still sitting at the dealership a month later because parts are backordered. I contacted Subaru and was put in touch with Grant Noble. Although Grant has been working hard to address the issue, the parts are still on backorder. While I am disappointed with the situation, I appreciate the efforts of Grant and the team at Subaru to resolve the issue.

  3. Nicklaus Ward 2024-07-22

Great car if performance is your main focus. It has plenty of low-end torque for everyday driving. However, drivability in everyday traffic can be poor. The car really wants to be driven hard, and when driven slowly, shifting can be cumbersome. The rev hang in 1st gear causes a rough shift to 2nd. As an everyday driver, it may not be the best choice. A CVT may be a better option...

  4. Tyson Heidenreich 2024-07-22

The car developed a clunking noise in the front suspension at around 4,000 miles, which has progressively worsened. Despite being taken to the shop four times across two different dealerships, the problem remains unresolved. However, I am confident in my decision to trade in the WRX for a more reliable vehicle, the GMC Sierra, which has had no issues. It is unfortunate that Subaru did not honor the warranty, but I am satisfied with my current vehicle. Thank you.

  5. Howell Konopelski 2024-07-18

I purchased this car brand new in June 2016, as it looked perfect on paper. Although I made the mistake of not test driving it, I decided to buy it anyway because a close friend of mine convinced me that it's one of the greatest cars in the world. The car looks great and has a decent quality interior, with better plastics than a BMW 435i which I test drove recently. Despite the CVT getting a lot of hate, I found it to be pretty decent. However, the mileage was pretty bad, considering I wasn't driving it aggressively and drove conservatively 80% of the time. I was getting 24-25 at best mixed, which is pretty disappointing for a 2.0l, 3400lbs, direct injection + CVT. The ride quality is not as good as my former 350Z and not as fun. The exhaust noise is mediocre and the audio system is the worst I have experienced in a car, sounding like a gramophone. There is also a constant drone in the cabin at certain rpms. I installed an OEM STi midpipe which was supposed to address that, but it did nothing. Although I regretted my purchase and sold it after 2 years, losing 10k in the process, I must say that the reliability was superb, with not a single issue. Oil changes were a 15 min breeze. My piece of advice for anyone in the market is to get a Golf GTI. This was my first and last Subaru for me.

Great speed and acceleration, flashy and super customizable. Great vehicle all around

I had the pleasure of test driving both the 2017 WRX and the STI, and I must say, the STI won me over with its superior sound, feel, and performance. I ended up purchasing the STI Limited, which has everything I could want in a car. Even after driving it for 10,000 miles over the past 2 years and only recently changing the oil, the car still feels brand new. Admittedly, it is a bit louder than other cars, and when I turn it on, it can rattle the windows in my house. I haven't made any performance modifications, but I still love my STI. Unfortunately, I recently broke my foot and am unable to drive it, so my wife has been using it. Despite receiving many compliments on the car's appearance, she finds it too loud for her liking.

Driving is so much fun! Plus, the grip on wet roads is really good.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your wife's STI so much that you decided to buy a WRX to match!

Hey there! I just wanted to say that your car is absolutely awesome! It's so fast and exhilarating to drive. I did notice a couple of cons though, like the non-heated steering wheel and the small nav screen. But overall, it's still an amazing car!
