2001 Chevrolet Prizm problems

chevrolet logo

The Geo Prizm and Chevrolet Prizm were compact cars that were rebadged versions of the Toyota Sprinter, a vehicle that the Japanese automaker Toyota never directly sold in the North American market. The Sprinter itself was derived from the Toyota Corolla. The Prizm was marketed under the Geo nameplate until it was discontinued after the 1997 model year. After that, the vehicle was marketed under the Chevrolet nameplate. General Motors (GM) referred to this and other Toyota Corolla derived vehicles as the GM S platform. The cars were produced from 1988 to 2001 (the last ones being sold for model year 2002) alongside the Corolla at NUMMI, an assembly plant operated as a joint venture of GM and Toyota. The Prizm was sold exclusively in the United States and succeeded the 1985–1988 Chevrolet Nova, which was also derived from the Sprinter and produced at NUMMI.

Production

All Prizms were built at NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.), a joint venture company between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, California. The NUMMI plant at Fremont had manufactured the Prizm's predecessor, the Chevrolet Nova, and would later manufacture the Pontiac Vibe, one of its replacements.

Production of the newly-rebadged Chevrolet Prizm began in late 1997 as the Geo brand was phased out, alongside the newest North American generation of the Toyota Corolla. The last Prizm was built on December 13, 2001, resulting in a brief 2002 model year.

2001 Chevrolet Prizm engine

Is Chevy Prizm a good car?

In short, the Prizm is one of the best compact cars money can buy. It does everything well, and looks good too. Better yet, it is essentially a reskinned Toyota Corolla, which bodes well for reliability, but not necessarily resale value.

Does 2001 Chevy Prizm have Toyota engine?

1998–2002 Chevrolet Prizms are equipped with Toyota's 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE inline-four engine; 2000–2002 models include VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence).

Does a 2001 Chevy Prizm have a timing belt or chain?

The 2001 Chevy Prizm does come standard with a timing chain on the engine. This is a chain that goes over the timing gears in the engine and keeps the cylinders and cams in time with each other.

How many miles does a Chevy Prizm last?

Properly maintained a Prism should be good for 200+K miles.

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-07-01
  • VIN: 1Y1SK52801Z
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD A 2000 CHEVROLET PRIZM AND NOW SOMEONE THREATENED MY LIFE TO FORCE ME TO BUY A 2001 CHEVROLET PRIZM. THE WINDOWS OF THESE CARS FOG UP TOO SEVERE TO DRIVE IN MINOR OR MAJOR RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN. WHEN IT RAINS WE HAVE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ON HIGHWAYS AND IN CITIES AND TOWNS AND WAIT FOR IT TO STOP RAINING FOR THE CAR TO BE SAFE TO DRIVE. MOST ALL OTHER CARS HAVE WINDOWS THAT ARE SAFE TO DIVE WITH BUT THESE CARS ARE NOT SAFE FOR DRIVING IN THE RAIN.

IT WILL EVENTUALLY RAISE AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF INOPERATION; SOMETIMES ONLY PARTIALLY AT A TIME. IF I HAVE INTENTIONALLY HAD THE WINDOW DOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THERE IS NO PROBLEM - YET. THIS ONLY OCCURS WHEN THE WINDOW IS FULLY RETRACTED, AND REGARDLESS OF WEATHER CONDITIONS. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-06-01
  • VIN: 1Y1SKS2871Z
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: GOT THE CAR IN 2004. IN 2009 THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, WENT TO THREE MECHANICS TO TRY AND FIND THE PROBLEM. NONE OF THEM HAD A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT WAS WRONG BUT THEY TRIED VARIOUS THINGS. IT STILL NEVER WENT OFF FOR MORE THAN 5 MILES DIRECTLY AFTER SERVICING. FOR A WHILE IT WAS DRIVING FINE EVEN THOUGH THE LIGHT WAS ON (OVER A YEAR) BUT THEN IT STARTED DETERIORATING. IT WAS VERY SLUGGISH, DID NOT DRIVE WELL (SHAKING) WHEN GOING OVER 35 MPH, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED BLINKING FOR 5-15 SECONDS WHEN I ACCELERATED. MPG TANKED, WENT FROM 35+ TO 23-25. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC. THEY REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS AND FUEL INJECTORS AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER ($1300 FIX ON MY THEN 10 YEAR OLD CAR). CAR STARTED RUNNING BETTER, MPG SLOWLY GOT HIGHER, BUT AFTER ABOUT THREE DAYS OUT OF THE SHOP THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. MECHANIC WAS STUMPED, HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS WRONG, BUT HE OK'D IT FOR ME TO CONTINUE DRIVING, SO I HAVE BEEN DOING SO. IT'S STILL DRIVING WELL, MORE OR LESS, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL ALWAYS ON. AROUND THE SAME TIME AS THE 2009 ENGINE LIGHT, I NOTICED THE ENGINE WAS DRINKING MORE AND MORE MOTOR OIL. NOW (2012) I HAVE TO PUT IN A QUART EVERY FULL TANK OF GAS, JUST ABOUT. *JB

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-11
  • VIN: 1Y1SK52891Z
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: ENGINE IS EATING OIL!! -- I PURCHASED AN 18-MONTH OLD CHEVY PRIZM LSI WITH A 1ZZ-FE 1.8L ENGINE BACK IN NOVEMBER 2002 WITH ABOUT 27K MILES. THIS CAR IS STILL IN MINT CONDITION. IT'S GARAGED AND I DO ALL THE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND USE PURE SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL SINCE I PURCHASED IT. UNFORTUNATELY AT ABOUT 50K MILES, MY ENGINE STARTED EATING UP OIL AT ABOUT 1 QUART PER 200 MILES. AFTER RESEARCHING THE 1ZZ FE 1.8L ENGINE BLOCK SERIES, IT APPEARS THIS ENGINE HAS PISTON AND RING PROBLEMS LEADING IT TO CONSUME OIL AT A RAPID PACE. I KEEP A CASE OF OIL IN THE TRUNK FOR LONG TRIPS AND PUT IN AT LEAST ONE QUART EACH TIME I REFILL THE TANK. THIS ENGINE CAN BE FOUND IN AT LEAST 10 TOYOTA AND ONE CHEVY MODEL (PRIZM). THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CAR, HOWEVER I CAN'T BELIEVE GMC HASN'T ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) REGARDING EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS. THESE CARS CAN RUN FOR AT LEAST 250K MILES IF YOU MAKE SURE THE ENGINE HAS ENOUGH OIL. BUYER BEWARE -- 1998-2002 CHEVY PRIZMS AND THEIR SIAMESE TWIN, TOYOTA COROLLAS WITH THE IZZ FE 18.L ENGINE WITH MORE THAN 50K MILES WILL CONSUME MUCH MORE OIL AND IT IS THEREFORE IMPERATIVE TO ENSURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH OIL IN THE ENGINE BLOCK TO PREVENT ENGINE SEIZURE. GMC SHOULD ISSUE A TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM. I REALIZE THIS CAR IS MORE THAN 10 YEARS OLD, BUT THERE ARE MILLIONS OF 1998-2002 PRIZMS AND COROLLAS ON THE ROAD. IF YOU BUY ONE, MAKE SURE THE PREVIOUS OWNER IS HONEST WITH YOU REGARDING OIL CONSUMPTION, OTHERWISE YOU MAY BE BUYING A CAR WITH LOTS OF ENGINE PROBLEMS. YOUR ENGINE MAY SEIZE UP ON YOU AND LEAVE YOU STRANDED IN TIMBUKTU... *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-04-13
  • VIN: 1Y1SK52881Z
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: 2001 CHEVY PRISM; CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CONTINUES TO BE ON. I HAVE PUT TWO OXYGEN SENSORS ON AT A COST OF OVER $200.00, AND LIGHT STILL COMES ON. MECHANICS TELL ME THE CODE SAYS "LEAN MIXTURE" BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING IT. CAR HESITATES WHEN COLD, ALMOST THROWING YOU INTO THE WINDSHIELD, UNLESS YOU REPEATEDLY PUMP THE ACCELERATOR. MECHANICS TOLD ME THAT MAYBE FUEL PUMP IS GOING BAD, BUT IT'S BEEN THREE YEARS NOW, AND THIS HASN'T HAPPENED. THE HEAD LINER IN VEHICLE HAS TOTALLY TORN AND DISINTEGRATED, EVEN THO IT HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT. GM WILL NOT EVEN CONSIDER INVESTIGATING THIS PROBLEM. NO MORE CHEVY'S FOR ME!! THE HESITATION IN TRAFFIC COULD CREATE A REAL SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-13
  • VIN: 1Y1SK52821Z
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I OWN A 2001 CHEVY PRISM LSI. IT HAS ALWAYS EXPERIENCED A NUMBER OF ANNOYING ISSUES THAT I'VE HAD MECHANICS INSPECT/DIAGNOSE THAT NEVER SEEMS TO GET CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED. IT USES ABOUT A QUART OF OIL A MONTH (BUT NEVER SMOKES OUT OF THE EXHAUST PIPE), HAS ALWAYS HAD A HESITATION PROBLEM, AND HAS A WEIRD PROBLEM WITH NOISY 'EXHAUST' SOUNDS THAT SOUND LIKE THEY ARE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND ARE WORSE (VERY LOUD) IN WET CONDITIONS. UPON COLD START, THE ENGINE HESITATES PRETTY BADLY WHEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE HESITATION GETS MUCH BETTER ONCE THE ENGINE HAS WARMED UP, BUT STILL HAS MINOR HESITATION UPON INITIALLY PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. MECHANICS HAVE SAID THEY THINK THE FUEL PUMP MAY BE STARTING TO GO OUT (I WAS TOLD THAT 5 YEARS AGO AND IT HAS NEVER GONE OUT) AND THEY SAID THERE WAS A 'LEAN MIXTURE CODE' WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AT ONE POINT BUT WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF THAT CODE WAS AND IMPLIED IT WAS PROBABLY THE FUEL PUMP SLOWLY GOING BAD. THEY RAN A CARBON CLEAN WHICH SHUT OFF THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT BUT THE HESITATION AND OIL CONSUMPTION HAS ALWAYS REMAINED. NUMEROUS TIMES, THE HESITATION HAS BEEN AN ISSUE IN TRAFFIC WHEN I PRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE ENGINE DOES NOTHING UNTIL I PUMP THE PEDAL A FEW TIMES TO GET IT GOING...LEADING TO A POSSIBLY SAFETY HAZARD IN CERTAIN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. NOBODY HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHY IT HESITATES AND FIX THE HESITATION PROBLEM AND I'VE READ THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ALONG WITH THE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM FOR CHEVY PRISMS/TOYOTA COROLLAS (ESPECIALLY THE 2001 MODEL). MECHANICS HAVE ALSO INSPECTED MY EXHAUST SYSTEM TO TRY TO FIND THE ISSUE WITH THE NOISY EXHAUST BUT HAVE FOUND NO LEAKS. I'M HOPING A RECALL CAN BE ISSUED TO HELP FIX SOME OF THESE ISSUES SINCE MECHANICS CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE OUT THESE COMMON PROBLEMS. IT SEEMS THAT TOYOTA AND GM ARE BOTH AWARE OF MOST OF THESE ISSUES AND HAVE DONE NOTHING TO RESOLVE THEM. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-06-20
  • VIN: 1Y1SK528X1Z
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET PRIZM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR WOULD NOT STOP ILLUMINATING ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WOULD APPROACH A STOP, IT WOULD STALL. THE DEALER AND SEVERAL LOCAL REPAIR SHOPS PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC, BUT WERE UNABLE TO FIND A DEFECT. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. RECENTLY, THE CONTACT DROVE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS AND OXYGEN SENSOR WERE DEFECTIVE; HOWEVER, ONLY THE SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE REPAIRS, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.

BOTH HEAD LIGHT BULBS, FUSES, BULB SOCKETS WITH WIRING, AND HEAD LIGHT RELAY BURNED UP. THERE WAS NO WARNING WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED AND THE HEAD LIGHTS BECAME DISABLED. COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WITH NO WARNING AND THE LIGHTS FAILING AFTER DARK. THE VEHICLE COULD HAVE COMPLETELY BURNED UP CAUSING INJURY. 3. I TOOK THE CAR TO GATES CHEVY WORLD IN MISHAWAKA, INDIANA TO HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. AFTER 5 TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT HEAD LIGHTS AND WIRING COMPONENTS TYPICALLY BURN UP ON VEHICLES WITH DAYLIGHT RUNNING LAMBS. STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-28
  • VIN: 2G1WX15K819
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: NUMEROUS THINGS HAVE GONE WRONG WITH MY 2001 MONTE CARLO. 5 OR 6 TIMES THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPAIRED THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG WHERE IT CONTINUALLY POPS OUT. I AM REALLY CONCERNED WHEN IT MIGHT EXPLODE W/O A CRASH OR IF THERE IS A DRIVER SIDE CRASH IF IT WILL COME OUT TO PROTECT ME. STEERING AND FRONT SUSPENSION POPS. AT 55,117 MILES WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED (WHICH HAS BEEN DONE EVERY 3000 MILES) OR LESS AND ON THE MULTI POINT INSPECTION SHEET, IT LISTED SEVERAL THINGS THAT "MIGHT NEED ATTENTION" SOON. THEY ARE STEERING LINKAGE AND STEERING COMPONENTS, CV AXLE BOOTS OR DRIVE SHAFT AND U JOINTS. THESE THINGS SHOULD NOT BE WORN OUT ON A CAR WITH NO MORE MILES THAN THIS. MY REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER DOESN'T WORK. NOTICED THIS AFTER ONE OF THE AIRBAG REPAIRS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF BUT STILL THE NOISES PERSIST AND NOW TO BE TOLD THAT THESE PARTS MIGHT NEED REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT? WE PAID A LOT OF GOOD MONEY FOR THIS VEHICLE (THIS IS A LIMITED EDITION HIGH SPORT VEHICLE) AND FEEL GM SHOULD BUY IT BACK AND REIMBURSE EVERY DIME OF IT DUE TO THE POOR QUALITY OF IT OR PROPERLY REPAIRED OR PARTS REPLACED AT GM EXPENSE WHILE PROVIDING AN EQUAL VALUE VEHICLE WHILE REPAIR WORK IS DONE. *TR

Negative 2001 Chevrolet Prizm car reviews

  1. Waylon Hermann 2024-11-13

This car has had some issues, but I have been able to handle them with confidence. After three months of driving, I noticed that the mass airflow sensor was faulty and causing the car to stall. During a road trip, the timing belt snapped, which required a complete engine replacement. Recently, the hood latch was faulty, causing some damage to the hood and quarter panels, but I was able to replace them and fix the issue. Although these repairs were expensive, I was able to handle them with ease. Additionally, the car's fuel efficiency is less than 30 mpg on the highway, but I am confident that I can manage it.

  2. Ryder Kassulke 2024-07-08

This is my third Prizm and unfortunately, it has had alignment problems from the start. I have spent more on alignments and tire replacements for this car than the other two Prizms combined. Despite this, I have found that it performs well in bad weather conditions such as snow and sleet.

  3. Stone Corkery 2024-05-17

The car is adequate. It may not have a lot of kick when you accelerate and there is some cabin noise, but the gas mileage is great!

  4. Humberto Hackett 2024-04-22

I can tell you that my car has been a great investment. I've had it for seven years and have only had to replace one sensor, which was just last week. I make sure to keep up with regular maintenance and even replaced the front brake pads last month. Despite driving it mostly in town, it has only accumulated 46K miles. Overall, it has been a reliable car that I am very happy with.

  5. Davon Turcotte 2024-01-08

The reason I traded my 2002 Impala in was that my wife and I were done travelling. We just needed economical, reliable city transportation. The Prizm is exactly what we needed, although I now wish I had a manual transmission.

Positive 2001 Chevrolet Prizm car reviews

  1. Wyatt Lubowitz 2025-01-09

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it for $3000 over the summer to replace my old Cavalier. I've been really impressed with the mileage and performance, especially considering it only has 125 hp. With some decent tires, cornering is really fun, and the stereo is not too shabby either. The only drawbacks I've encountered are some fading paint and peeling interior plastic around the door frame (which I think may have come from the GM part of the joint project), and the lack of a center armrest. But overall, I think it's a great car. As others have mentioned, it's essentially a Toyota with a Chevy emblem on it, which is a great way to save $2000 compared to a Corolla, and even more on gas. With proper maintenance, this car is bulletproof and perfect for city driving!

  2. Armani Bashirian 2024-11-26

I researched used cars for quite some time and found a great deal for under $6K. We purchased an '01 with only 31000 miles and still 5 more months of warranty for 6K out the door. The acceleration is sufficient and the mileage is wonderful. A comparable Corolla would cost around 10K. This car is an unbeatable value!

  3. Braeden Marvin 2024-11-15

The Prizm is a great choice for anyone looking for a small used car. In my experience, my Prizm has been incredibly reliable over the past year. While the 3-speed transmission can sound like it's struggling at speeds above 55 mph (although it's great for city driving), I believe a 4-speed would be a significant improvement. Despite the cramped back seat (a friend of mine had trouble getting out), I'm overall very satisfied with my car. I paid $5999 for a loaded '01 over a year ago, and I don't think you can find a better value for the quality of the car.

It's a great little car with good features. Just make sure you have the handbook, otherwise you won't be able to fix the clock. Right now, the gas mileage is 36 miles per gallon, which is even better than the dealership's estimate of 29 miles per gallon. With gas prices being what they are, this is definitely one of the car's best features!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've been using my car for delivering pizzas for a few months now and it's been great! I've put almost 10k miles on it and haven't had any issues so far, which is fantastic. It does have 146k miles on it, so it's not the most powerful car out there, but I'm still happy with it. I did change the plugs a couple of days ago and it seems to be hesitating a bit, but I think it just needs some time to adjust itself.
