2009 Subaru Outback problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

Common 2009 Subaru Outback problems

The Subaru Outback 2009 has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Head Gasket Failure: The 2.5-liter SOHC EJ253 engine in the Subaru Outback 2009 is prone to head gasket failure, which typically occurs around 160,000 kilometers. This issue can be resolved by replacing the head gasket with an EJ255 head gasket (turbo engine).
  • Exterior Door Handles: The exterior door handles on the Subaru Outback 2009 are known to break, especially the driver's side door handle. This issue can be fixed by getting a new part from the dealer, which has been revised to address the problem.
  • Power Steering Pump Leaks: The power steering pump in the Subaru Outback 2009 can leak, causing issues with the steering system. This problem is common in the EJ253 engine and can be resolved by replacing the leaking power steering pump.
  • Valve Cover Gasket Leaks: The valve cover gasket in the Subaru Outback 2009 can also leak, causing oil to leak from the engine. This issue is common in the EJ253 engine and can be resolved by replacing the leaking valve cover gasket.
  • Oil Pan Gasket Leaks: The oil pan gasket in the Subaru Outback 2009 can leak, causing oil to leak from the engine. This issue is common in the EJ253 engine and can be resolved by replacing the leaking oil pan gasket.
  • Rear Suspension Issues: The rear suspension in the Subaru Outback 2009 can cause "ghostwalking," which can be resolved by swapping the rear trailing arm bushings with Whiteline polyurethane ones.
  • PCV Valve Replacement: The PCV valve in the Subaru Outback 2009 should be replaced every 60,000 kilometers to prevent crankcase overpressure issues.
  • Headlight Bulb Consumption: The headlight bulbs in the Subaru Outback 2009 can consume quickly, especially in the 05 OBXT model. This issue can be resolved by replacing the headlight bulbs with LEDs.
  • Steering and Suspension Issues: The steering and suspension system in the Subaru Outback 2009 can cause issues such as rattling noises, rough rides, and noisy driving on most surfaces. These issues can be resolved by replacing the control arms, steering linkages, power steering hoses, and shock absorption system, as well as addressing any leaks or excessive wear.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: The Subaru Outback 2009 is known to consume excessive oil, which can be a sign of engine issues. This problem can be resolved by addressing the underlying engine issue and ensuring that the engine is not burning through oil between scheduled changes.
  • Leaky Head Gaskets: The Subaru Outback 2009 has had issues with leaky head gaskets in the 4-cylinder engines since the 1980s. This issue can be expensive to repair as it requires the engine to be removed.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Subaru Outback 2009. It is important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues, and some may experience different problems altogether. However, being aware of these common problems can help potential buyers make informed decisions when considering purchasing a Subaru Outback 2009.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-16
  • VIN: 4S4BP61C096
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The rear hatch on this Outback won't lock. As a woman on her own, my safety is at risk. I have read of other people who have this issue and has been able to fix this on their own. This is a safety issue if your vehicle won't lock completely because the wires in the hatch are compromised.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-20
  • VIN: 4S4BP66C197
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The dashboard becomes sticky and shiny and therefore makes it difficult to see. Subaru offered a limited recall but too many vehicles such as mine were overlooked. Also apparently the repair they offered only replaced the dashboard with one of the same caliber. So eventually more cars will be affected by the sticky and shiny dash as time goes on.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
  • VIN: 4S4BP61C997
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Passenger Side - rear brake line failed. Upon inspection the brake line rotted out at 4 way junction box - just in front of the rear tire- passenger side. Had to remove the plastic shield to get to the problem. I was driving at the time when it failed. Pretty scary as the car almost did not stop. I lost about half of the brake fluid. I know Subaru of America had a recall and this car was inspected years ago. Their fix was to spray a wax coating on the lines. They should have replaced the brake lines on all the cars subject to the recall. There is obviously an issue here with the quality of the lines they used as I see that 2005 to 2009 subarus have this problem. Safety put me or others at risk - yes

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-21
  • VIN: 4S4BP63C496
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While coming down a hill, I applied the brakes, and suddenly lost all brake pedal pressure, only being able to stop using a handbrake. This complete loss of the braking system put me and other drivers at risk. Had I been traveling at higher speeds, an accident could have occurred. The brake system warning light came on at the same time as I pumped the brake pedal, and there were no prior indications that the brake system was about to fail. When I inspected the car for fluid leaks, I found that the brake master cylinder was empty and a lot of fluid had collected just in front of the rear passenger-side wheel. The brake line union block at the rear of the car was severely corroded as were the brake lines into and out of the union block. This exact problem was supposedly addressed by NHTSA recall 14V-311 (Subaru Recall WQK-47). The fix involved either applying an anti-corrosion coating or replacing the faulty brake lines. The recall was marked as completed in 2014. However, the completed recall did not prevent the problem from recurring. Since the recall was marked as "completed", Subaru has refused to conduct necessary repairs on the vehicle. This is a known failure point and serious safety concern in many Subaru vehicles, acknowledged by both NHTSA and Subaru. I claim that the fix completed under the recall was insufficient in preventing brake line corrosion and failure.

  • VIN: 4S4BP66C097
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: THE CAR INTERMITTENTLY BUCKS/CHUGS WHILE DRIVING AND THEN STALLS. ALL THE LIGHTS FLASH ON. IT IS DIFFICULT TO RESTART. IT HAS HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY AND LOCAL STREETS. IT ALSO IDLES VERY ROUGH WHEN AT STOPS OR IN PARK AND SHUDDERS LIKE IT WANTS TO STALL - SOMETIMES IT DOES. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 2 MONTHS NOW. THE FIRST TIME, I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND IT STALLED CREATING A HAZARDOUS SITUATION. MY MECHANIC HAS ATTEMPTED TO FIX IT AND THEN HE HAS TAKEN IT TO THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALERSHIP WHERE IT HAS SPENT ALMOST 2 MONTHS OFF & ON WHILE THEY "FIXED" IT. THEY GIVE IT BACK AND IT IS BACK TO THEM WITHIN A WEEK WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE LAST TIME THEY REPLACED A MAP SENSOR AND SOME WIRING. THIS IS HAZARDOUS AND THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE. IT FEELS LIKE THEY JUST KEEP CLEARING OUT THE ERROR AND GIVING IT BACK TO ME.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-19
  • VIN: 4S4BP66C897
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: 2009 SUBARU OUTBACK STALLING WHILE DRIVING. THE ENGINE TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING WITH LIGHT ACCELERATION AT LOW SPEEDS (5-20 MPH) WITHOUT WARNING. WARNING LIGHTS FLICKERED ON AND OFF. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE TO HAVE THE CAR STALL OUT WITHOUT WARNING. SUBARA SOUTH BLVD DEALERSHIP SAY THEY DO NOT KNOW THE ROOT CAUSE. PRIOR TO THE ABOVE INCIDENCE THE CAR, WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS, WOULD OCCASIONALLY SHUDDER AND THE WARNING LIGHTS WOULD FLICKER ON THEN GO OFF. IT FELT LIKE THE CAR WAS GOING TO SHUT OFF BUT IT DIDN'T. NOW IT IS SHUTTING OFF. IT'S COMPLETELY UNSAFE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-19
  • VIN: 4S4BP61C696
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: THERE IS A WELL DOCUMENTED FAULTY DESIGN ISSUE THAT LEADS TO FAILURE OF THE WIRING HARNESS (REAR GATE CORD) TO THE REAR WAGON DOOR/GATE OF THIS MODEL SUBARU OUBACK WAGONS. FAILURE OF THE WIRING HARNESS HAS AFFECTED ME WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. AS THIS ISSUE HAS PROGRESSED, MORE AND MORE WIRES BREAK, COMPLETELY SEVERED, AND LEAD TO THE REAR LOCK NOT WORKING, THEN BACKUP LIGHTS NOT WORKING, REAR DEFROSTER NOT WORKING, WIPER NOT WORKING, AND LICENSE PLATE LIGHT NOT WORKING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, ESPECIALLY THE BACKUP LIGHTS, REAR DEFROSTER, REAR WIPER, AND LOCKING MECHANISM NOT WORKING AT ALL! THESE COMPROMISE VISIBILITY AND CAR SAFETY. THIS FAULTY DESIGN, OR FAULTY MATERIAL CHOICE IS CLEARLY SUBARU'S FAULT: SEVERED ELECTRICAL WIRES, AS A RESULT OF NORMAL USE, SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTABLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY COMPROMISE SAFETY BY DISABLING BACKUP LIGHTS AND THE REAR LOCK. WHILE THE REPLACEMENT CABLE ITSELF IS ONLY $63, THE SUBARU DEALERSHIPS WANT TO CHARGE OVER $500 IN LABOR. I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL, OR SUPPORT ON THIS ISSUE FROM SUBARU OF AMERICA. I CANNOT FIND ANY OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM SUBARU ON THIS ISSUE. I DON'T THINK IT'S FAIR TO HAVE LOYAL CUSTOMERS LIKE MYSELF, PAY EXCESSIVE LABOR CHARGES TO FIX A SAFETY PROBLEM THAT IS A DESIGN FLAW FROM SUBARU.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-26
  • VIN: 4S4BP61C697
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. IF CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED IT GENERALLY STAYS OFF. RESEARCH STATES THAT THE AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IF THIS LIGHT IS ON WHEN AN ACCIDENT. THIS APPEARS TO BE DUE TO PART NEEDING TO BE SOLDERED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SUBARU SHOULD RECALL THE VEHICLES INVOLVED. THIS IS HAPPENING TO MANY CARS.

A SUBARU DEALER MENTIONED THE CONTROL MODULE (CIRCUIT BOARD) IN THE OVERHEAD COMPARTMENT CONSOLE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE FOUND THAT THE SOLDERING ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD IS FLIMSY AND PRONE TO CRACKING. APPARENTLY THERE IS A DANGER THAT THE AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IF THE WARNING LIGHT IS ON.THERE ARE A NUMBER OF ONLINE FORUMS THAT DETAIL OTHERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THE FORUMS RECOMMENDED FIX IS TO APPLY SOLDER. HERE IS ONE EXAMPLE: HTTP://WWW.SUBARUOUTBACK.ORG/FORUMS/109-GEN-3-2005-2009/42574-2006-OBW-AIRBAG-LIGHT-MY-FIX.HTML

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

Negative 2009 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Kian Boyle 2024-10-15

I haven't come across any other reviews for the 2009 3.0R, so I thought I'd share my thoughts. The car is an absolute joy to drive, and once you get the hang of the user interface, the stereo and nav systems are a lot of fun to use. The mileage is as advertised, which is pretty good considering the power and AWD. However, I did experience some issues with the car. Unfortunately, after just 5 days and 500km, the check engine light came on, along with the flashing cruise and shift control lights. I took it to the dealer, but they had trouble troubleshooting the issue. They eventually found the root cause after 2 days in the shop, replacing a solenoid that controls one of the cams. However, just one day after getting the car back, I experienced the same failure again. Needless to say, this is not the kind of reliability I expected from a Subaru!

  2. Walter Hermiston 2024-09-29

We purchased the car back in November 2008 in Colorado. Unfortunately, we experienced some violent bucking which forced us to visit a dealer in New Mexico. They informed us that we could only use one brand of gasoline. We then returned to the Colorado dealer who assured us that the New Mexico dealer didn't know what they were doing. They kept the car for a while and replaced a camshaft sensor, and assured us that the car was okay. However, it turned out that it wasn't, so we took it to yet another dealer who replaced the turbocharger and some other parts. They also assured us that the car was okay. We have noticed that the gas mileage appears to be poor, but we will continue to observe it to see if it improves. If it doesn't, we may consider selling it. Just a word to the wise, it may be worth thinking twice before buying a Subaru.

  3. Orion Gusikowski 2024-09-23

I bought the Outback after my 99' 4Runner with only 92,000 miles through a rod. Although it wasn't my first choice of car, it made sense economically at the time. However, I have come to regret my decision. The ride is quite rough, especially for a car chassis, and the engine is underpowered, particularly when loaded for road trips. The mileage is also not great, with only 22-23 mpg for commuting and 18 mpg for road trips with bikes on top. Additionally, the vehicle is quite small for road trips, camping, or biking trips, as it can only accommodate one other person and gear. Therefore, I am considering a new 4Runner or Tacoma, which would provide me with the same gas mileage but with more power and room.

  4. Preston Langosh 2024-09-20

The car has had some major issues, including a blown front crankshaft seal due to loose oil pump backing plate screws at 65,000 miles, a center differential and bearing failure at 85,000 miles, and a broken tailgate wiring harness at around 95,000 miles. Additionally, there has been excessive oil consumption, which has steadily worsened to a quart every 650 miles. The car has also had some minor issues, such as failed front axles and a rattling exhaust heat shield. At 140,000 miles, the timing belt broke, which was likely due to my failure to replace the pulleys when I changed the belt at 65,000 miles. Upon inspection, the spark plug tubes were full of oil, the exhaust valves were pitted from the burning oil, and the oil rings were stuck in the pistons. While I take responsibility for this issue, I would still recommend a Subaru to a friend, as long as they are aware of the importance of regular maintenance and upkeep.

  5. Adolphus Hirthe 2024-07-24

The first 09 Outback I received had a broken heater and starting issues. After being replaced, the second car had a misfiring engine and a check engine light appeared just 6 days after purchase. Despite this, Subaru HQ refused to repair the vehicle, claiming that the misfiring was part of the break-in process.

Positive 2009 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Cloyd Auer 2024-11-28

I have a 2016 Subaru Outback, but unfortunately, the drop-down menu did not have the correct model year. Despite this, I have been extremely impressed with the gas mileage, which has exceeded that of my previous vehicles. During a road trip on I-5 from the Bay Area back home to San Diego, I was pleasantly surprised to see my MPG gauge on the dashboard read 40.5 - yes, you read that right, 40.5 MPG! I was so impressed that I wrote to Subaru to express my gratitude, and they even sent me a gift - a BOSE 'Bluetooth' boom-box. I later found out that it retailed for $325.00 at Best Buy, which was a pleasant surprise and a testament to Subaru's commitment to their customers!

  2. Clement Kirlin 2024-11-23

After being a loyal UAW car owner for over 25 years, I was disappointed when GM let me down again. I tried a 97' Corolla, but it was too small and not suitable for the snowy roads of northern Michigan. However, I found my perfect match in a blue and silver 09' Outback that I spotted online. During the test drive, I couldn't help but smile from ear to ear. Even now, in late 2011, my used 09' with only 24K miles drives better than my Trailblazer did when it was brand new. I have been driving this car all summer and I absolutely love it. With an impressive MPG of 28-29 on the highway, I am excited for my next road trip. As soon as Subaru improves the look of the Outback beyond the 2012 model, I will be ready to buy a brand new one. I must admit, the 2012 model is not as attractive as the 05-09 models. Despite leaving the UAW behind, I have no regrets about my decision.

  3. Grover Weber 2024-11-01

It can be difficult to see out of the side windows when backing up since they are quite small.

  4. Arlo McCullough 2024-10-25

Hi there! I can totally relate to your desire to own an Impreza WRX hatchback, but I understand that the insurance cost can be a bit overwhelming. When I went to Carmax, I was actually looking for a smaller hatchback, but then I saw this one that had just arrived on the lot the day before and the price was just right! Plus, the option of an extended warranty through 150k miles was a really nice touch. I must say, I'm really enjoying most everything about this car, and even the things I don't love, I still really like. :)

  5. Gay Muller 2024-10-22

As a first-time Subaru owner, I wasn't sure what to expect. This is the first car I've owned without a frame around the door's windows. My mileage has been a bit lower than expected, but I'm hoping it will improve. My previous car was a Toyota Highlander, which did really well in the snow and had decent mileage. However, I'm excited to see how this new car performs in the snow, as I've heard great things. Overall, I'm looking forward to getting to know my new Subaru better!
