Kia Sorento 2016 problems
The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.
First generation (BL; 2002)
2002–2006
Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-16
- VIN: 5XYPKDA58GG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased a used 2016 Kia Sorento during the used vehicle rise in pricing back in 2021. I owned a 2012 Hyundai sonata (which also required an engine replacement), but I my grandmother's car died, and I needed a better vehicle for a new job. June 16th I was driving with my daughter at around 9am and suddenly the vehicle started to shake and loss of power with the radio system beeping all dash lights flashing "engine system component" and check engine light remained on. (very similar to how my sonata died before engine replacement). I pulled over got the vehicle towed to my house due to it being a weekend and unable to reach a shop. I have a code reader, which I read the codes. Upon getting it to the dealer they said it was the Cam Shaft Phaser and new spark plugs, costing about $4800. As a single mother and one income I need a vehicle to survive (and still owing over $6,000) and pay my bills. Now here I am September 15, and I get an "engine system component" and check engine light back on. Now I have read so many similar issues on Kia blogs and nothing is being done to fix these issue and I am stuck with a vehicle that I still owe money on and overpaid because of COVID, and continues to break down. I'm disgusted with Kia as they could care less.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30

- Summary: I want to report the incident occurred on July 30, 2024 when I turned on the ignition. I pressed the brake to shift the transmission to the drive/reverse mode from Park mode. The shift stick was stuck at one position Park and did not move. I searched on line and found that I could manually shift the car and get the car moving at least by removing the cap next to the shift stick and insert a screw driver to press it inside. This allowed me to change the gear and move the car temporarily. Since, my car is parked and I am not driving it fearing it would stop instantly on my putting my life and others in danger. The vehicle has not been troubleshooted by Kia dealership or mechanic. I would like NHTSA that this vehicles be recalled for safety concerns and fix the issue without any charge to the owners.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-13
- VIN: 5XYPKDA54GG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES

Additionally, I was notified of an Important Safety Recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 22V612) indicating a defect that could lead to vehicle rollaway, significantly increasing the risk of a crash and injury. The letter assured me that Kia would inspect and, if necessary, replace the shift lock lever and holder at no cost. I took the vehicle in for inspection in May and the vehicle has not been returned to me yet. the vehicle has been at the dealership with no indication on when the issues would be remedied. The vehicle is used for services to minority and low income youth and it appears that the company does not care about BIPOC safety.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
- VIN: 5XYPG4A31GG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On [XXX], I was on my way to the Orlando airport to pick up my daughter in her car (Kia Sorento 2.4L GDI). At about the halfway point to the airport, I increased my speed so I could go around a slow moving truck on the turnpike. After I passed the truck, I guess maybe a few 10ths of a mile give or take. The car just died. I looked at the dash and I see it's lit up like a Christmas tree. I pulled over to the side of the road and onto the shoulder. I put the car in park, turn off the car, and then try to start it. It didn't start so I popped the hood and first thing I checked was under the car to make sure there was no oil or coolant leaks. Then I checked the oil dipstick and there was plenty of oil and the coolant tank was at the full mark. I called my insurance agency to get roadside assistance and the car was towed to the city of Clermont in Florida. We charged the battery due to it being low from trying to start the car. After the battery was placed back in the car we tried again to start the car. I was told to stop because there was smoke coming from the front of the engine. No fire, but it may have been the starter smoking trying to start the car. After trying several times, I gave up and filled out paperwork for the Christian Bros Auto group to check the car to see what is wrong with it. After a few days we were told that the motor was seized up and needs to be replaced. We have all the documentation of all oil changes and repairs since my daughter got that SUV. Vehicle was well maintained and documented. I see that there is a class action lawsuit against KIA for this size engine. Our next step is to see what we have to do to get the car repaired. She still owes over 18K still on the car. I heard that KIA was a good car but we'll see what happens now. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
- VIN: 5XYPG4A34GG
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 60-70 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal loud cracking sound and stalled. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the side of the freeway. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to a safe location. The vehicle was then towed to the residence. The contact stated that upon opening the hood to inspect the vehicle, the contact noticed that the coolant reservoir had exploded, causing coolant to splash underneath the hood and to leak out on the front passenger's side of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the engine was taken apart. The dealer diagnosed that there was oil intrusion in the coolant, and that the engine had overheated excessively, causing the engine block to become distorted. The Extended Warranty field technician later informed the contact that the repair could not be covered. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
- VIN: 5XYPH4A10GG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving in fast moving traffic on a highway when my car suddenly shook and lost power. The check engine light came on. I pulled over and turned the car off for a few minutes. restarted the car, no light came on, so I continued. After a little while the car started hesitating as I would press the gas peddle then it would rev high rpm's and then take off very fast. The engine light came back on. I was able to get to a garage where they checked it. They said it was total engine failure. A spark plug broke inside the cylinder causing internal damage. I then towed it to a KIA dealership but have not heard back from them yet what their diagnosis might be. I could have been run over from behind by a semi truck or at least hit from behind when my car suddenly slowed down. I looked on line and have seen countless failures of this same engine for various reasons. It seems to me that this engine is a lemon in many ways. KIA has a settlement in place but only if the failure is caused by one certain thing. This engine as a whole is dangerous. Reports like mine are numerous, also engines catching fire. How is this engine not recalled? 1. engine failed 2. could have been hit from behind 3. automotive garage confirmed internal damage 4. still at KIA dealership with no response yet 5. engine light came on

I recently traded in my 2013 Sorento for the redesigned 2016 EX V-6 and I must say, it's an outstanding vehicle. It's quiet, has plenty of power, and excellent handling. I am definitely keeping this one. I also own a 2011 Kia Optima EX that is fully loaded and I absolutely love it. I traded in my Hyundai XG 350L for it and have put 79,000 miles on it with no problems. I plan to continue buying Kia's. In fact, I have had this vehicle for 10 months now and have driven 14800 miles and I am still completely satisfied. It gets around 26 city/30 highway and I have no complaints. The extra alarms like the back up warning and cars in your blind spots are very nice features. I would definitely buy another Kia.

I never thought I would buy a Kia, but I'm so glad I did! The car is incredibly roomy, even for my giant husband, and the seats are comfortable for my delicate back. The ride is so smooth and quiet that I have to be careful not to speed. I was originally considering a Subaru Outback, but the trade-in value for my Cadillac was poor and they weren't offering any deals. I'm not a huge car enthusiast, but I absolutely love my Sorento! I'm still getting used to all the bells and whistles, but overall it's been a great experience.

I'm on my second Sorento now, having traded in my 2014 model, and I have to say, the difference is night and day. This vehicle is incredibly quiet and smooth - it's like driving on a cloud! We opted for the 3rd row (just in case), but we usually keep the seats folded down to make use of the huge amount of space in the back. While it may not be quite as spacious as the Pilot, it's worth noting that the Sorento itself is a more compact car. I highly recommend taking one for a test drive - they range in price from $25k - $45k, and there are several incentives available, such as discounts for active military, veterans, and students. Of course, your mileage may vary!

It seems like there are a few areas that could use some attention. There are some air leaks around the doors that are causing some noise, and the front ball joints had to be replaced. Unfortunately, the car failed inspection due to the ball joints. On the bright side, the handling is great and it turns well. However, the value has decreased below replacement cost, which is a bit concerning. Additionally, the warranty can be a bit confusing, especially since it expired despite the low mileage of 38K and the car not being 5 years old yet. Have you considered looking into an extended warranty? Let me know if you need any help with that!

The Sorento offers amazing value for money. It is a great SUV that is comfortable and easy to drive for extended periods. The third row is usable for children or small adults, and even though the highlander and pilot have more third row room, the Sorento's third row is fine. The engine is plenty powerful, and the fuel mileage has been as expected. We average 23mpg between a mix of city and highway. Although there are a few minor gripes, such as the brakes fading in stop and go situations and the seat material not being great, they are not a big concern to us. We have no intention of selling, so resale value is not a big concern. Overall, my wife and I are very happy with our choice of the Sorento.

We are sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your 2016 Kia Sorento EX AWD 2.0T. It must have been frustrating to have problems so soon after purchasing the vehicle. We understand that the shifting between 1st to 2nd gear has been causing discomfort and that there is a loud rattle coming from near the turbo. Additionally, the vehicle has failed to start at random times. We can only imagine how inconvenient this must have been for you. We hope that the Kia dealerships will be able to address these issues soon and provide you with a satisfactory solution. We appreciate your feedback and will make sure to pass it along to Kia customer service. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

At around 125000 km, the coolant started to mix with oil, causing the head gasket to blow. Despite the car being meticulously maintained and receiving all necessary services on time, the Kia dealership charged me $200 for a diagnostic and did not provide any details on how they determined the issue. They also avoided my phone calls, and when I eventually spoke to the manager, he promised to call back but never did. Instead, they gave me an estimate of $12000 to fix the problem. However, I took it to another shop that is currently taking care of the problem. Today, my mechanic informed me that he had exactly the same vehicle as mine come in with the exact same issue. While one incident could be an accident, two vehicles with the same issue after hitting 100000kms does not seem like a coincidence to me. Further research on the internet revealed that quite a few people had the same issue and KIA did not help. I will never buy KIA again. Since my last post, I had to replace the throttle body, and now the EPB actuator broke, leaving my brakes locked. It appears that KIA used plastic gears inside the actuator motor, which is unacceptable. The new part costs $950 plus labour, and it is extremely difficult to access as they placed it behind the sub-frame with bolts facing up. To make matters worse, less than a month ago, I had issues with EPB, and now my AWD actuator broke. If you are considering buying a KIA, I strongly advise you to read this and steer away from this brand. Keep in mind that financing a KIA will result in paying tons in interest, and you will lose a lot of money as it is one of the worst brands to hold its value. Plus, the reliability factor is poor. Loan interest, huge depreciation, and poor reliability resulted in me being out of pocket by $6000. Please do the math before making a decision.
