1992 Toyota Celica problems

The Toyota Celica (/ˈsɛlɪkə/ or /sɛˈliːkə/) (Japanese: トヨタ・セリカ, Hepburn: Toyota Serika) is an automobile produced by Toyota from 1970 until 2006. The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica meaning heavenly or celestial. In Japan, the Celica was exclusive to the Toyota Corolla Store dealer chain. Produced across seven generations, the Celica was powered by various four-cylinder engines, and bodystyles included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés and notchback coupés.

In 1973, Toyota coined the term liftback to describe the Celica fastback hatchback, and used the name Liftback GT for the North American market. Like the Ford Mustang, the Celica concept was to attach a coupe body to the chassis and mechanicals from a high volume sedan, in this case the Toyota Carina. Some journalists thought it was based on the Corona due to some shared mechanical parts.

The first three generations of North American market Celicas were powered by variants of Toyota's R series engine. In August 1985, the car's drive layout was changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive turbocharged models were offered from 1986 to 1999. Variable valve timing came in certain Japanese models starting from December 1997 and became standard in all models from the 2000 model year. In 1986, the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was spun off as a separate model, becoming simply the Supra. Lightly altered versions of the Celica were also sold through as the Corona Coupé through the Toyopet dealer network in the 1980s and as the Toyota Curren through the Vista network in the 1990s.

The Toyota Celica Liftback GT won Motor Trend Car of the Year (Imported Vehicle) in 1976.

THIS SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN CAN BE VIEWED AT HTTPS://TECHINFO.TOYOTA.COM AND IS PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. ON PAGE TWO, TOYOTA'S SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN (V06) FOR 1990-EARLY 1995 TRUCKS, 4RUNNERS, & T100 WITH 3VZ-E V6 ENGINES STATES: "UNDER THE SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN PROGRAM, THE HEAD GASKETS WILL BE REPLACED ON ALL THE AFFECTED VEHICLES REGARDLESS OF LEAKAGE OR NOT, AND THERE WILL NOT BE ANY AGE, MILEAGE OR TIME RESTRICTIONS UNDER THE SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN." MY VEHICLE VIN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED BY TOYOTA AS FALLING UNDER THIS SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN. TOYOTA HAS AS OF SEPTEMBER 24, 2018, STATED THAT THIS SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN HAS EXPIRED AND REFUSES TO HONOR THEIR HEAD GASKET REPAIR UNDER THIS SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN. I IMMEDIATELY CHECKED THE OIL AND THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE ENGINE (MARKED ABOUT A 1/4" FROM TIP OF DIP STICK). AS CONFIRMED BY WORLDTOYOTA I HAVE NO OIL LEAKS AND I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED ANY SMOKE OR FUME EMMITTING FROM MY EXHAUSE. LAST EMISSION INSPECTION 1/03. IF SOMEONE (NAMELY WORLDTOYOTA) CAN GIVE ME A FEASIBLE EXPLANATION AS TO WHAT HAPPEN TO THE 5 QUARTS OF OIL THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPLACED DURING THE OIL CHANGE I CAN MAYBE GET SOME UNDERSTANDING. BUT OIL DOES NOT JUST EVAPORATE OUT OF THE ENGINE. MY NEXT SCHEDULE OIL CHANGE WAS 138,019 MILES OR 5/29/03. I AM A SINGLE MOM AND THIS IS MY SOLE MEANS OF TRANSPORTAION. I CONSISTENTLY TAKE NECESSARY STEPS TO MAINTAIN MY VEHICLE.

  • VIN: JT5ST87K4N0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING, MY CAR IT STARTED FILLING UP WITH SMOKE. THE SMOKE WAS COMMING OUT OF THE AMPLIFIER, LOCATED UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT OF MY VEHICLE. TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP THE ELECTRICAL CURRENT, THE CAR KEPT FILLING UP WITH SMOKE AND STRANGE NOISES WERE COMMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS. ALSO, THE RADIO WOULD NOT TURN OFF. NO FUSES BLEW. DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY CABLE FINALLY STOPPED THE CURRENT AND EVERYTHING SHUT OFF . LUCKLY I WAS CLOSE TO HOME, AS THE VEHICLE DID NOT COME EQUIPPED WITH A WRENCH TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE IN THE EVENT OF A ROGUE ELECTRICAL CURRENT. PART OF THE CIRCUT BOARD INSIDE THE AMP WAS MELTED. I WOULD LIKE TO WARN OTHERS, WITH THIS PART IN THEIR TOYOTA, OF WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT THIS HAPPENS TO THEM. THE SITUATION COULD DEFINATELY HAVE TURNED OUT MORE DAMAGING. I WAS LUCKY. I HAVE CONTATCTED TOYOTA AND THEY HAVE LET ME KNOW THEY DO NOT HAVE A RECALL OR SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR THE AMPLIFIER. THEY APOLOGIZED THAT THERE WAS NO FURTHER TECHNICAL EXPLANATION FOR MY CONCERN. A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT A STEREO AND ELECTRONICS STORE ASKED ME IF THE AMPLIFIER HAD BEEN SERVICED BEFORE DUE TO THERE BEING A "JUMPER" ON IT. I DID ASK TOYOTA IF THE EVERY CIRCUT BOARD LOCATED IN THIS PART HAD A JUMPER MELDED ON IT, SINCE IT SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN ALTERED FROM ITS ORIGINAL STATE ON MINE. THEY DID NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION IN THEIR RESPONSE.

Positive 1992 Toyota Celica car reviews

  1. Lourdes Ortiz 2025-01-05

I bought this car used from the original owner. It has now clocked 195k miles and has required repairs that are normal for a Toyota. In fact, it has required far less repair than other cars I have owned. The biggest cost was painting, which I consider an investment. I opted for a Factory Original Standard job, which will last 16 years, just like the original paint. It's true what they say, you get what you pay for, and it looks like new. The interior is holding up great, and I use Armor All regularly for cleaning and protection. I also use Michelin Pilot all-season radials, which are very important. The car was sold new for $17,500, but I paid $9,500 for it with 73k miles in 1997. I have replaced the clutch and slave, radiator, water pump, A/C converted to new standard, bearings, and a few bulbs. I must warn you that this car has a high compression engine and direct front-wheel drive, which can be a dangerous combination in slippery conditions. To stay on the road and avoid a wreck, you cannot take your foot off the accelerator unless you are in neutral gear. Then, tap or pump the brakes to slow down. Failure to do so will result in a 360 spin. This fact about this car may be the reason I have never seen another one like it on the road in over 20 years. I believe most of these cars have been crashed because of bad slippery weather conditions. Other than this flaw, the car is very safe. Now I know why many sports cars have rear-wheel drive. Overall, rear-wheel drive is safer, though not as good in snow and ice. Front-wheel drive is still better for snow and ice, and the new automatics with computer control on the throttle help to reduce the chance of 360's in bad weather. The bottom line is to know your car. Only sports cars with high compression engines have this problem. So, know your car and test it in a parking lot in bad weather before you get caught driving in bad weather. Then, you will be okay. By the way, the car gets a maximum of 40.2 MPG with premium gas and 29.5 MPG in the city (in mountains). It's great on fuel economy, especially if you use cruise control.(now 200036 miles, running like new)

  2. Curtis Mann 2024-11-19

What a great find! This car has had only two previous female owners and was purchased with just 9000 miles in '93. It has been driven daily for 9 years and has proven to be extremely reliable. The A/C was even replaced on Toyota's nickel at about 60,000 miles. With only a few minor replacements such as 2 batteries, 8 tires, fluids, 3 lights, and 2 power antennas, this car has held up incredibly well. I had never owned a manual before, but this car reads my mind when shifting! Kudos to the engineers who designed it and the people who built it. It is super solid and I am confident it will last for another 90 to 120 thousand miles.

  3. Denis Haley 2024-10-29

I was gifted this car by my parents when I graduated, and although I was hesitant at first, it has grown on me so much that I fear I will never be able to part with it. It is an absolute joy to drive, with its solid construction and sturdy metal parts (which contribute to its weight). After 13 years, there are still no squeaks or rattles, and it remains sporty, fun, and safe. In fact, I have only had to replace the alternator and light bulbs since I became its owner.

  4. Tremaine Buckridge 2024-10-26

This car has been very reliable, with only an unexpected alternator failure at about 75k. Although there have been some quirky problems, such as a piston that operates the roof springing a leak, they have mostly been minor or middle-level routine maintenance, such as replacing wheel bearings and mufflers. I have driven this car for 196k and will continue to do so until it dies. I have found that if you take care of the car, it will take care of you. One annoying problem is the vinyl roof, which loses clarity and shape, creating real blind spots. Additionally, the radio lights have failed, but it is too expensive to figure out why.

  5. Paolo Bogisich 2024-10-11

This car has been great! I can't think of anything negative to say about it.
