2005 Subaru Forester problems
The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.
First generation (SF; 1997)
The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Japan
In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.
The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.
When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-08
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JF1SG63675G
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I was driving down the highway when my front drivers side control arm broke causing me to completely lose control of my vehicle. I was thrown down an embankment and into a cornfield where my vehicle came to a stop. I narrowly missed a telephone pole and culvert. I am extremely fortunate that my car went into a field rather than into oncoming traffic as this happened during rush hour traffic on a Thursday night around 5-530pm. I’m glad that I was able to walk away from this and wasn’t killed. I had no warning lights, no laxity in steering, no warning at all-absolutely NOTHING that would’ve allowed me time to avoid this. The part failure has been recalled previously, and when I called Subaru I was told that the recall had been “taken care of” which concerns me that this part was “fixed” and still put my life in danger. Police were called to the scene and a report was written. My car was towed to a local shop to be evaluated and was considered a total loss due to the extent of the damage. I am still waiting to hear back from Subaru if there is anything they are willing or wanting to do. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I take amazing care of my vehicles, and haven’t even owned this car for a year. Now I am stuck in a completely unfair situation and having to carry the financial burden for something I was not responsible for. The vehicle is still available to be looked at as well, and I am more than happy to have someone look at the damage. I don’t want anyone to lose their life over this part malfunction, and I hope you are able to help me do something about this to keep everyone on the road safe.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-21
- VIN: JF1SG63665G
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE WE DROVE IT ON A 3 HOUR ROAD TRIP ON THE HIGHWAY TO VISIT OUR DAUGHTER AT COLLEGE. AFTER PARKING I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE THE CAR OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. I MISTAKENLY PASSED THE EXIT AND AS I ATTEMPTED TO REVERSE BACK TO THE EXIT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT TRAVEL IN REVERSE EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SECURELY IN GEAR. I WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY DRIVE IT AROUND A CORNER OF THE PARKING LOT AND PARK IT WHERE IT THEN WOULD NOT MOVE IN REVERSE OR FORWARD. I EXITED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE LEFT FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS SLIGHTLY BENT IN TOWARDS THE VEHICLE. I THEN CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A MECHANIC. THE NEXT DAY THE MECHANIC WAS NOT YET ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR INTO THE GARAGE TO LIFT IT BUT WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE HAD TO ORDER THE PARTS WHICH WOULD NOT ARRIVE FOR THREE DAYS. WE WERE PREPARED TO PAY FOR THE COST OF REPAIRS WHEN THE MECHANIC CALLED BACK AND AFTER HAVING ANOTHER TECHNICIAN LOOK AT THE VEHICLE THEY NOTICED A HAND SIZED HOLE IN THE SUB FRAME CAUSED BY SEVERE RUST DAMAGE THAT THEY COULD NOT FIX AND WOULD NOT ALLOW THEM TO FIX THE CONTROL ARM PROBLEM. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT WE WERE LUCKY TO MAKE IT AS FAR AS WE DID, AND WE WERE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AND AFTER I ASKED EVEN IF THE CONTROL ARM WAS BRAND NEW WOULD WE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM? HE IMMEDIATELY ANSWERED YES. WE THEN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A FRAME SPECIALIST WHO TOLD ME THAT THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SUB FRAME HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AND IS NOT CONFIDENT THAT BOLT WILL NOT SIMPLE FALL OFF IF ANYTHING IS ATTACHED TO IT. THE FRAME SPECIALIST STATED HE MOST LIKELY WILL HAVE TO CUT INTO THE MAIN FRAME TO FIX THE PROBLEMS. UPON SPEAKING TO THE GM OF THE DEALERSHIP HE STATED THAT YOU BOUGHT AN AS-IS VEHICLE, AND THEIR DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT BE PUTTING ANY MORE MONEY INTO THAT CAR
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Summary: THERE'S A KNOWN UNDERCARRIAGE RECALL ISSUE ON THE 2005 FORESTER FOR WHICH I NEVER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION. UPON DISCOVERY OF THE PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE WHICH INCLUDED EXTENSIVE CORROSION ON THE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND THE SUPPORTING FRAME (SEE PHOTO). I CONTACTED A NEARBY SUBARU DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT MOST OF THE NEEDED REPAIRS WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THIS SITUATION PUT MY FAMILY AND ME AT GREAT RISK AS WE WERE DRIVING THE CAR AROUND WITHOUT KNOWING. WE FEEL THAT SUBARU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO GREATER LENGTHS TO MAKE SURE I GOT THE NOTICE REGARDING THIS STRUCTURAL DEFECT. SUBARU SHOULD COVER THIS REPAIR IN FULL. I WANTED TO ALERT OTHERS TO THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM

- Summary: I WAS BACKING UP MY 2005 SUBARU FORESTER IN A DOWNTOWN, STREET-LEVEL CORNER PARKING LOT. WHEN I PUT MY VEHICLE INTO REVERSE, A SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROPELLED MY VEHICLE BACKWARDS ACROSS THE PARKING LOT, ACROSS A TWO-LANE DOWNTOWN STREET, UP ONTO THE OPPOSITE SIDEWALK AND CULMINATED IN MY VEHICLE CRASHING INTO A CITY LIGHT POLE, WHICH STOPPED THE VEHICLE. I ESTIMATE I WAS TRAVELING AT 25-30 MPH WHEN I HIT THE LIGHT POLE. I MISSED TWO PEDESTRIANS BY MERE INCHES AND FORTUNATELY MISSED HITTING ANY OTHER CARS. I HAD MY FOOT HARD ON THE BRAKE THE ENTIRE 4-5 SECONDS OF THE INCIDENT, AND ALMOST BROKE THE GEAR SHIFT, MADLY TRYING TO SHIFT INTO PARK. MY VEHICLE IS TOTALED AND I AM TOTALLY FREAKED OUT BY THE ENTIRE NIGHTMARISH EXPERIENCE! THIS WAS A DEADLY SEQUENCE OF EVENTS WHICH EASILY COULD HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE AND OTHERS' LIVES. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER SUBARU. THIS OCCURRED ON THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2018.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-11-21
- VIN: JF1SG63675H
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: FRONT RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM AND AXLE BROKE WITH NO WARNING WHILE IN MOTION. MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR AND RETURNED IT IN 2011 FOR A RECALL "WVX34" NHTSA CAMPAIGN 11V464000 FOR 03-08 FORESTER FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM RECALL-FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. HOWEVER, THE BOWSER SUBARU GARAGE FAILED TO FULFILL THEIR OBLIGATION CAUSE THEY FAILED TO REPLACE THE RUSTED OUT PARTS AND THEY ARGUED IT WAS FINE AFTER THEY DID A SPRING TENSION TEST BY HITTING ONLY ONE AREA- THE THICKEST PART OF THE METAL AND THEY REFUSED TO CHECK ANY OTHER SPOT. MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER, WHO HAS EXPERIENCE IN AUTO MECHANICS AFTER HAVING BEEN A MECHANIC IN THE SERVICE, KNEW THIS BOWSER SUBARU WAS WRONG SO HE WENT ACROSS THE STREET TO FIRESTONE, OBTAINED EVIDENCE/PROOF WITH DOCUMENTATION FROM FIRESTONE AFTER THEY CHECKED THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND THEY NOTED "BOTH" LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARMS NEEDED REPLACED BUT "AGAIN" EVEN WITH THIS PROOF, THIS BOWSER SUBARU GARAGE IGNORED THIS "SAFETY" RECALL ISSUE AND THEY SAID THEY WANTED $2,000 TO FIX IT WHEN IT WAS STILL UNDER THIS RECALL IN 2011. SUBARU HEADQUARTERS CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID THE RECALL WAS COMPLETED ON THIS VEHICLE IN 2011 AND THEY REFUSE TO FIX THIS RECALL. HOWEVER, THIS CAR STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL PARTS THAT SUBARU NEVER CORRECTED AND FORTUNATELY IT LASTED THIS LONG HOWEVER, THEY FINALLY BROKE FROM THE RUST. FORTUNATELY, WE GOT OFF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SAFELY-ONLY 2 MILES AWAY AND ALSO MADE IT TO THE BOTTOM OF A STEEP HILL SAFELY BEFORE HAVING IT TOWED. SUBARU NEVER FULFILLED THEIR OBLIGATION AND DENIED THIS RECALL BY COVERING IT UP THAT THEY COMPLETED THE WORK WHEN THEY NEVER DID ANYTHING. I WILL SUBMIT ANY DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU REQUEST.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-23
- VIN: JF1SG65665G
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR EXPERIENCED: -LOSS IN POWER (STUTTERED A COUPLE TIMES), THEN COMPLETELY STALLED -WE HAD TO COAST IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD -A FEW HOURS LATER WE TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN AND IT RAN FINE -IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE PROBLEM, THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN FOR ~15 MINUTES WITH NO ISSUES, THERE WAS NO RAIN, IT WAS A DRY DAY, NO OTHER POTENTIAL CAUSES TO BE NOTICED -THIS EXACT ISSUE OCCURRED ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED, IT HAS BEEN DRIVING FINE EVER SINCE, EXCEPT IN THE WINTER THE IDLE WILL SOMETIMES FLUCTUATE (UNSURE IF THIS IS RELATED) THIS STALL CONDITION COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS IF IT OCCURS ON THE HIGHWAY, AT AN INTERSECTION, ETC. IT PRODUCED A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND CODE P2138 WHEN READ WITH A OBDII SCANNER. UNFORTUNATELY THE PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT AND WAS NOT ABLE TO BE REPEATED. THE FACTORY TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE WAS FOLLOWED TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE PEDAL SENSOR, THE HARNESS, OR THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. ALL PASSED THE TESTS. SO WE ARE LEFT WITH A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ELECTRICAL ISSUE THAT CAN'T BE VERIFIED TO BE FIXED BECAUSE IT CAN'T BE RECREATED.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-04
- VIN: JF1SG67655H
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE REAR BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH AND FAILED WITHOUT NOTICE. ONE SEVERAL MODEL OF SUBARU, BRAKES LINES WERE REPLACED FOR CORROSION DUE TO A RECALL. WHEN ORDERING THE REPLACEMENT PART I NOTICED IT APPLIED TO SOME OF THE CARS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AND SOME THAT WERE NOT. IT SEEMS TO MY THAT MY FORRESTER HAD PRECISELY THE SAME LINES THAT WERE RECALLED ON OTHER MODELS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN YOU ORIGINAL SETTLEMENT WITH SUBARU. WE HAVE MANY OLDER CARS IN THE FAMILY AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAS EVER EXPERIENCED A BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO CORROSION. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT SUBARU IS NEGLIGENT IN SUPPLYING CARS WITH BRAKE LINES THAT CORRODE MORE EASILY FROM THE OUTSIDE THAT AUDI, TOYOTA, LEXUS AND HONDA - JUST FROM OUR EXPERIENCE.

The Forester is a fantastic crossover SUV. Although it may be slightly pricier than some of its competitors, the value it provides is superior. It's a truly enjoyable car/SUV to drive, with a peppy engine (the largest standard engine in its class) and excellent handling (aided by AWD technology) that make it a winner! There's plenty of room inside, and lots of storage nooks. It's a great all-around vehicle - you'll love it!

This buggy is a fantastic replacement for my wife's 2004 Forester, which unfortunately got hit twice while stopped in traffic. The safety features of this vehicle are incredible, as we were able to walk away from both accidents with very few injuries. Both times, we were hit by much larger trucks, but thanks to this vehicle, we were able to come out unscathed. My wife loves the zero hip entry height of this car, which is even better than my slightly lower Outback. The Turbo engine provides a great feeling of lightness during acceleration, and the smart airbags in the front and sides give us peace of mind. The seat heaters and climate control system are perfect for our local climate, where the temperature can change by 40 degrees in just an hour's drive. Thanks to the outside temperature display, we can always stay comfortable no matter what.

Hey there! I have a cabin in the mountains and I love going up there during winter. My little subie is perfect for the job, it handled the snow like a champ and I didn't even slip once! Although, I was hoping for better gas mileage, I'm only getting about 26-28 on the highway, but that's probably because of my lead foot. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and any minor issues can easily be fixed with some relatively cheap aftermarket gear like shifter knobs and tint. :)

The Forester has been an excellent car so far. It's been about two weeks since we got it, and it's getting around 29MPG on mixed driving. We were looking for a vehicle with more space for camping, bikes, our dog, and eventually children, and it was challenging to find an SUV that met our needs. However, what won us over was that it's as close to a car as you can get and gets better mileage than most cars do. The car feels solid, even when compared to the Prelude we traded in for it. We haven't run it hard yet since it's still in the break-in period. We would highly recommend this car to anyone.

I really enjoy driving this truck! It has confidence-inspiring handling, great acceleration, and a certain fun factor that is unexpected in a small SUV. As someone who also owns a 2004 Corvette, I value driving fun when considering a vehicle for purchase, and this Subie doesn't disappoint! The fit and finish are great, and the wagon has a fine tailored look. The comfortable leather heated seats are a real treat, especially on cold days. While it may not be the best choice for large families going on a long vacation, there is plenty of cargo room, and the roof rack can help resolve that issue. I've had Subarus in the past, and the all-wheel driving system is unstoppable in all weather conditions. Overall, this is a fantastic car, and I wouldn't worry too much about the price point.

I purchased my Forester L.L. Bean from the original owner at a great price. While I understand that some people may find Foresters to be overpriced and overrated, I have had a mixed experience with mine. Initially, it made an annoying high-pitched whistle, but that went away after a few months. Recently, the head gasket blew, causing it to burn anti-freeze which has an unpleasant smell, but it runs fine once warmed up. When it's cold, it makes a chugging sound and also leaks oil, which I've been told is common with older Subarus. Unfortunately, repairing the Boxer engine can be expensive as it requires the whole thing to be pulled out of the car and new gaskets to be put in. For me, it's not worth the cost, so I'll just keep adding oil and anti-freeze. While the automatic transmission may seem outdated and sometimes clunky, it still gets the job done. Overall, my experience with the Forester has been mixed, but I appreciate its unique features and capabilities.

It has been a reliable car that has taken me from point A to B, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The transmission constantly shifts and is starting to slip, and I have noticed a lack of power going through the Rockies. Additionally, there are some squeaks and rattles, and the wind noise is quite noticeable. I have also had some trouble starting the car in colder weather, and the paint is chipping away in various places. The plastic interior is a bit flimsy, and the speakers could be better. However, I have always garaged the car and maintained it since day one. It is worth noting that here in CO, we don't use salt on the roads, so I am unsure why the paint issue has occurred. Despite these issues, I have managed to put 78,000 miles on it. If you are interested in this car, I recommend checking Consumer Reports. I am just waiting for the head gasket to blow.

The interior quality could use some improvement, but the bright color looks great when it's new and even after a year, especially when it's wet! Unfortunately, the back seat lacks leg room and comfort for adults, and if you have a car seat, there's only one more comfortable seat available. If the exterior paint and finish were of higher quality, and the interior materials were improved, this could easily be one of the best vehicles around.

Although my ownership experience was short, I feel compelled to share my thoughts. While this vehicle may not be the best fit for everyone, it does have some redeeming qualities. The gas mileage is decent for an AWD vehicle, averaging around 22-23 mpg. If you prefer a manual transmission, this may be the car for you. However, if you are looking for a roomy family vehicle, you may want to keep looking. It is worth noting that the windows can be prone to wind noise, but overall, this car has its strengths and weaknesses.
