2011 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.

First generation (SF; 1997)

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Japan

In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.

The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.

When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

  7. Transmission Performance: Reports of poor performance when the transmission is in regular drive mode have been noted. Owners have found better performance in sport mode or clutchless manual shifting, highlighting potential issues with the transmission's standard operation.

Addressing these common problems in the 2011 Subaru Forester is essential to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle. Regular maintenance, prompt attention to recalls, and addressing any reported issues promptly can help mitigate these concerns and maintain the car's performance and safety standards.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2SHADC1BG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car randomly turns off when reducing speed. It caused an accident a few days ago. I have had multiple mechanics try to figure out the problem but the only thing that comes up on the diagnostic tool is it needed 1 coil replaced. They have all been replaced and still won't go away. The Che k engine light is on. And the car uses about a quart or more of oil everytime I fill up but has no leaks. When I reduce speed the car in traffic, around corners or to stop it constantly turns itself off. Starting it it sometimes turns itself off if I don't give it some gas at the same time. It smells like burning oil constantly.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2SHABCXBH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: unintended sudden acceleration defects without warning without driver input. I could kill & be killed. It can happen again! I backed up a little in an angle moving away from parking. Suddenly, without any warning, the car took off and frantically flew backward, passing a stop sign (offense), crossing the main road 4 lanes, perpendicular to the marked lanes (offense), mounted on the sidewalk and landed on a private property breaking bushes. It happened sooo fast! I could not figure out what happened! If a car was travelling in the main road, both of us might have been seriously injured or died! The police gave me a citation for two civil offenses and “negligently operating MV” which is a criminal offense. The Police demanded to suspend my license! I am scheduled by the police for a court hearing, demanding to issue a criminal claim against me, arraign me as a criminal and stand a criminal trial! I few days ago I backed up in an angle out of my driveway to Rte-9 which is a major Road/highway as I have been doing for years with no problem. The same phenomena happened: the car accelerated frantically, turned in a circle and stopped by hitting a telephone pole! If the car approaching did not stop I found out that numerous complaints and more than one law-suit filed against Subaru 2012-2018. Mine is 2011. Thousands of dollars in legal fees, being sued for property damages, getting driving points, increased insurance for years, badly damaging my car. This might happen! Should I even touch this car again?

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-12
  • VIN: JF2SHBDC0BH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We have come to learn that our 2011 Forester with 95,229 miles is now burning (internally) oil at an alarming rate. The car was making a funny noise so we had it towed to the dealership and they found it was low by 4.8 quarts of oil. The last oil change was at 91,749 and this issue was discovered at 95,229 or 3480 miles driven and 4.8 quarts of oil is "missing". The dealer advised there is no signs of leaks from under the car and where we have it parked, there are no oil spots on the pavement. I have come to learn that in August 2014 then again in April 2016 there was a service bulletin on this engine due to oil consumption. The notice indicated that they (Subaru) was extending the powertrain warranty to 8 years / 100,000 miles. Sadly, we are past the 8 years but not the 100,000 miles.

STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-20
  • VIN: JF2SHABC1BH
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE
  • Summary: I bought my vehicle new from Oakland Subaru. From the beginning I had to add about a quart of oil every month and a half to two months. I thought this was normal. When my vehicle had approximately 73,800miles, I went to Fremont Subaru for a regular motor oil change. I was asked about the oil consumption. After I reported how much oil I had been replacing on a regular basis, they asked me to return after 1,200 miles to see how much oil my car had consumed. They found out that my vehicle had oil leaks and the engine had to be replaced at 75,000 miles. Subaru paid for the service to be done. Today I took my vehicle to Fremont Subaru for a regular motor oil change which I usually do. My vehicle currently has 134,605 miles. The service representative, Devon Devlugt, informed me that my vehicle is unsafe to operate due to several oil leaks from the engine. The engine has less than 60,000 miles since it was replaced. This is the second time my vehicle becomes inoperable due to engine oil leaks. Fremont Subaru dealership will repair the engine for $4,687. Kelly Blue Book estimates my vehicle to be worth $4,700. Subaru must be held accountable for the vehicles they sell to consumers. My vehicle has had this problem since I bought it. There have been enough vehicles presenting this problem that Subaru paid for my vehicle’s engine to be replaced. Please hold Subaru responsible for engine failures/malfunctions.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-13
  • VIN: JF2SHABC1BH
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I have tried to get the recall on airbag replaced to no avail, just alot of lip service and never any follow-up on repair of air bag. I am extremely ticked off that the very last current notification by mail this july 2022. I included a copy of it where it states DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO SIT IN FRONT-PASSENGER SEAT UNTIL THE AIRBAG RECALL REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON YOUR VEHICAL. This say to me that Subaru is covering the butts by telling me it will be my fault if injury occurs yet subaru skirts around not repairing on Recall Code TKB19. Relieves them of no responsibilty. Also this notification clearly states alternative transportation options- loaner car, round trip towing, shuttles. I have yet had anyone call or address this issue other then telling me to text "FIX" or call 800 number which I have done quite a few times. I would appreciate that you will respond to me that you will do something other then ignoring me. You will be sure that if anything happens there will be an attorney involved. Subaru needs to honor this Recall or why even bother to send out notices constantly .

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-06
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2SHABC4BH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Driving a 2011 Subaru Forester, about 5mph in traffic on city street when car suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated at full gas and rammed into truck in front of me, with no pressure on the gas pedal. Slamming on brakes and pulling on hand brake was not enough to override the unexpected and unasked-for acceleration. I can only imagine what would have happened if there were pedestrians or if I'd been going faster. Subaru should be absolutely ashamed - in researching this, I've learned that they KNOW that this happens, but refuse to create a recall. Shame on you, Subaru.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-14
  • VIN: JF2SHBBCXBH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Thousands of Subarus are developing leaking cam carriers which can cause the vehicles to stall due to oil loss. There are online threads with many, many owners reporting their vehicles developed this problem - many with low mileage. My vehicle developed the problem with about 40,000 miles on the odometer. This vehicle should be recalled. Dealerships are making a fortune fixing these vehicles, often charging close to $3,000.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-13
  • VIN: JF2SHGGC4BH
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I have received multiple letters to fix my Subarus air bag. It was fixed once after a long wait for parts. The second required fix is proving hard to set up. I called a Subaru fix line, waited an hour while they try to schedule, then was disconnected. I called back, same long wait and they can not call you back if disconnected (I asked if they could as I was just disconnected and had to start over). I tried to explain to them in Hawaii we live on islands and cannot drive to other ones so it must be scheduled on my (Maui) island. They said they knew that (I even gave them the address of Subaru Maui). I waited on hold another 1/2 hour then got an email. I was scheduled a month later on - another island. I called back, waited again (they seemed more concerned with canceling my appointment the getting me a new one). After a very long series of transfers I was connected with Subaru Maui. They told me they (service dept) can't schedule them (only mangers can schedule air bag appointments) but they will have a manager call me back. I asked when and they said a week or two. Its been a week but I have not heard anything. I wrote Subaru with my issue and got a auto reply telling thanking me for being an owner and how great their cares are. No acknowledgment of my problem. The letters stress the importance of getting it done, but Subaru makes it very hard.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-26
  • VIN: JF2SHADC3BH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING THROUGH COLORADO, FROM CRESTED BUTTE TO TELLURIDE. I WAS DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVE. AS THE CAR WENT UP HILLS IT WOULD AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT DOWN, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO REV INTO THE 4,000 RPM RANGE, WHICH IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE SUSTAINED. IN ORDER TO COMBAT THIS I USED THE MANU-MATIC SYSTEM TO HOLD THE TRANSMISSION IN THE HIGHER GEAR. AFTER A WHILE MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. CONCURRENTLY, THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT BEGAN BLINKING. THINKING IT WAS AN OVERHEATING ISSUE, I STOPPED THE CAR AND WAITED A WHILE. AFTER A FEW CYCLES OF DRIVE/STOP/DRIVE/STOP, THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF. THINKING THE ISSUE WAS RESOLVED, WE CONTINUED ON TO TELLURIDE. LEAVING TELLURIDE, HOWEVER, WITH THE SAME DRIVING BEHAVIOR, THE ISSUE RETURNED, ONLY WORSE NOW. WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON THE ACCELERATOR STOPPED RESPONDING. WE WERE HEADED UPHILL AT 65MPH ON A NARROW TWO LANE ROAD, WITH A STEEP DROP OFF THE SIDE, AND MULTIPLE CARS BEHIND US. I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR ALL THE WAY DOWN AND THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND AT ALL. THIS CAUSED US TO BEGIN RAPIDLY DECELERATING, WHICH WAS EXTREMELY UNSAFE GIVEN THE CONDITIONS. WE PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. AFTER A SHORT WHILE OF SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AND THE ISSUE HAD CEASED. THE INTERMITTENT NATURE OF THIS ISSUE IS SCARY - AT ANY MOMENT THE ACCELERATOR MAY CEASE TO RESPOND, POTENTIALLY CAUSING A LIFE THREATENING SCENARIO. UPON REACHING OUR DESTINATION, A FRIEND HAD A CODE SCANNER AND PULLED CODE "P2138 - THROTTLE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR SWITCH D E VOLTAGE CORRELATION." THERE'S NO OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION FROM SUBARU, THAT I COULD FIND, ON THE ISSUE, AND BROWSING VARIOUS SUBARU FORUMS TURNS UP A LOT MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-11-28
  • VIN: JF2SHADC4BH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THIS MODEL HAS BURNED A LARGE AMOUNT OF OIL. I HAVE TO REFILL WITH 1-2 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN CHANGES AND EVEN MORE IF WE DRIVE CAR FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. I HAD TAKEN VEHICLE AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES BECAUSE OF THE SMELL OF BURNT OIL WOULD COME FROM THE BLOCK, BUT THERE WASN'T A SIGN OF LEAKAGE ANYWHERE. THE DEALERSHIP HELD THE CAR FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND DETERMINED THAT IT WAS THE MAIN OIL SEALS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. $3200 LATER AND THE PROBLEM WAS NOT FIXED. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, IT WAS TOO COSTLY TO KEEP BRINGING VEHICLE IN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND A BOLD FORUM WHERE HUNDREDS OF OWNERS HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND SUBARU OF AMERICA WAS NOT WILLING TO LISTEN AND DO A MANDATORY RECALL FOR THIS OBVIOUS PROBLEM. WHEN I CALLED CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY TOLD ME I WAS OVER THE ALLOWED MILEAGE FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE FIXED. MY PROBLEM WITH THIS WAS THAT THEY NEVER SENT OUT A NOTICE OR MESSAGE RELATED THE POSSIBLE PROBLEM MANY COULD BE ENCOUNTERING. THEY STATED THAT THE ONLY FIX WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE BLOCK WHICH WOULD COST ME OVER $5000. THIS PROBLEM IS A MAJOR ONE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE BURNS ALMOST 2 QUARTS OF OIL EVERY 1500 MILES OR SO. IF NOT REGULARLY CHECKED AND REFILLED, THE ENGINE CAN BURN DUE TO THE LACK OF OIL. IT IS BECOMING EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE SINCE A QUART OF OIL IS ABOUT $10. I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS PROBLEM CONTINUES TO BE PRESENT AND SUBARU HAS NOT YET TAKEN CARE OF ITS LOYAL CUSTOMERS. AT THIS POINT, AS SOON AS I CAN AFFORD IT, I WILL BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE AND SUBARU WILL NOT BE ON MY TO BUY LIST IN THE FUTURE AGAIN. I WILL ALSO NOT RECOMMEND ANY OF MY ACQUAINTANCES TO PURCHASE A SUBARU IN THE FUTURE AS WELL. *TR

  • Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback vehicles, certain model year 2006 through 2012 Tribeca vehicles sold before January 2012, and certain model year 2009 through 2012 Forester vehicles sold before January 2012. Up to 78,650 of these vehicles may have been equipped with accessory puddle lights that, when illuminated, brighten the area under the doors of the vehicle. A short circuit can develop when either the puddle light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source (such as road spray that has road salt in it) and it penetrates the circuit board of the puddle light or the pins of the puddle light connector(s).
  • Consequence: Over time, migration of the moisture into the circuit board and/or into the connector cavity, may result in a short circuit of the puddle light system. This may generate heat which may melt the plastic resulting in smoke or fire.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fused-harness, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.

THE AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR in the SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES LOCATED IN THE REAR CENTER SEATING OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES DO NOT MEET LOCKABILITY REQUIREMENTS AND FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, “OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION.” SPECIFICALLY, THE ASSEMBLIES MAY NOT PERMIT PROPER INSTALLATION AND SECURE ATTACHMENT OF A CHILD RESTRAINT IN THAT SEATING POSITION.
  • Consequence: AN INSECURE INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO A CHILD DURING A CRASH.
  • Remedy: SUBARU WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR CENTER SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY WITH A NEWLY MODIFIED AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM LETTER WAS MAILED ON MARCH 26, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SUBARU AT 1-800-782-2783.

Negative 2011 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Ronny Conn 2025-01-09

At 107,000 miles, the motor in this car stopped working, which was just outside of the warranty period. Unfortunately, the Forester consumes a significant amount of oil. Despite bringing it to the dealer multiple times while it was still under warranty, they were unable to fix the issue of it burning multiple quarts between oil changes. When the motor eventually failed, we were disappointed that the dealer did not offer any compensation. However, it is important to note that every car brand has its own set of issues. We recommend exploring all options before making a purchase decision.

  2. Nicklaus Nitzsche 2024-11-23

I've had the Forester for 6 months and driven it for 11k miles so far. It's interesting to note that out of the 4 vehicles I own and drive on the same roads and park in the same place, the Forester is the only one with a cracked windshield and hail damage. As someone who is almost 6 ft tall, I've had trouble finding a comfortable position in the car. The lack of a telescoping wheel is a real bummer, especially since I have long legs. If the seat isn't fully back, my legs get cramped if I drive for any length of time, but if it is, my arms are held nearly straight out to reach the wheel. I've also noticed that the body seems to dent easily - a recent light hail storm left 18 dents in the car, while my other cars didn't get a single one. The radio is also not great, and the interior plastic feels cheaper every day.

  3. Deon Witting 2024-10-24

I recently purchased a 2011 Forester and have driven it about 250 miles so far. While I am enjoying the car, I have noticed some engine vibration at idle, particularly when the engine is cold. Additionally, there is some noise when the engine is first started, but it goes away after a few seconds. Despite these issues, I am willing to give the car more time and see how it performs in the long run.

  4. Donato Fahey 2024-10-20

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Subaru Forester. While I initially purchased it due to its perceived reputation, I've unfortunately had some issues with it. The body trim pieces have fallen off and there's been some piston ring slap, causing it to burn oil more quickly than expected. When I brought it in for service at Northtown Auto in Amherst NY, they explained that this is a known issue with Boxer engines. Despite following the recommended oil change schedule, I experienced a low-end knock at 13000 miles and discovered that nearly all the oil was gone, despite no visible leaks. While I've been disappointed with the quality of the engine and manufacturing, I hope this information is helpful to you.

  5. Armando Gaylord 2024-09-10

My impressions so far at 5K miles are a mixed bag. However, the Forester XT is great for family trips with enough comfort and room for kids and stuff. The XT has good power and dynamic handling thanks in part to the AWD that sometimes makes things boring. The interior is nice with some good features and is comfortable and reasonably quite. Additionally, the price is also reasonable. However, it is important to note that the 4sp auto is this car's big downfall that accounts for poor gas mileage (I'm getting 17.7mpg mostly city) and jerky shifting.

Positive 2011 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Shane Gislason 2025-01-09

I really enjoyed test driving this SUV! In comparison to its competitors, it had the best ride quality. The steering is very responsive and the handling is excellent. The tilt/telescope wheel and power seat make it easy to get comfortable behind the wheel. I've even taken it out in the snow and it's performed well so far. I decided to install aftermarket mud flaps, which turned out to be a great choice. The only downside is that the paint is a little soft and scratches easily. The engine is responsive, although it can be a little noisy, but it revs smoothly. The gear shift is a bit notchy, but it's tolerable and fine once you get used to it. Overall, I'm very happy with my decision to purchase this SUV and I have no complaints about it. The interior is well assembled, although some materials are on the cheaper side.

  2. Obie Bergnaum 2025-01-05

We absolutely adore our Forester! It's the perfect size for us. One of the best things about it is that we don't have to struggle to get in or out of it. Driving it is an absolute joy - it's so responsive and has a great turning radius. Plus, visibility is excellent and parking is a breeze. However, we do have a couple of concerns. Firstly, the radio leaves a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, the FM sounds like hollow AM radio. Secondly, the passenger seat is highly uncomfortable, non-adjustable, and sunk down so low that it's hard to see over the dash. Lastly, we've noticed that storage is a bit of an issue. The glove box is tiny, and the cup holders are square, which means that bottles routinely fall over. Even the in-door cupholders are flawed. Despite these minor issues, we still love our Forester!

  3. Casimir Rutherford 2024-09-23

I have experience with several SUVs, including the Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, and Honda CRV. Unfortunately, the interior of the Rogue was not to my liking. However, the CRV was quite nice. Ultimately, I test drove a Subaru Forester and it was the perfect fit for me and my husband. We were immediately impressed with the solid feel of the vehicle and its spaciousness. My husband, who is 6'1'' with broad shoulders, was especially pleased with the ample leg and head room. The Forester also drives smoothly, handles corners well, and has a tight steering and turning radius. As someone who previously owned a Honda Civic, I can attest to the quality drive of the Forester. Additionally, the AWD feature was a major selling point for us.

  4. Jaydon Effertz 2024-08-03

I just finished researching small SUVs for my wife, and we settled on the Forester after looking at Honda CR-V. We believe we made the right choice, because the build quality seems to be about the same and reliability and resale value are also similar. However, the Forester provides a more comfortable ride and seating. To put it bluntly, the CR-V has austere seats, especially in the mid- and lower-range models. We would like to add that the Forester has amenities the CR-V does not, unless you buy the high-end model CR-V. It is true that the Forester is not as 'pretty' as the CR-V, but my wife and I favor function over form so that dropped out immediately as a consideration. Best of all, she loves it!

  5. Sigurd Stracke 2024-08-01

My wife and I did a lot of research and checked out many competitors' vehicles before finally settling on the Forester. We were drawn to its stylish design and comfortable interior. Living in the California foothills and mountains, we knew we needed all-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, and the Forester delivered. While it is a 4-cylinder vehicle, we initially thought it was a bit underpowered. However, after owning it for three months, we are both convinced that a 6-speed automatic transmission would greatly improve its performance and ability to keep up with traffic, especially in the hills. It's interesting to note that, despite being promoted as an outdoor vehicle for use in the hills, the Forester only has a 4-speed automatic transmission, which was common in the 70s. If Subaru were to upgrade to a 6-speed automatic, this car would truly be stellar. Overall, we think it's a good car.
