2001 Porsche Boxster problems

porsche logo

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman are mid-engine two-seater sports cars manufactured and marketed by German automobile manufacturer Porsche across four generations—as a two-door, two-seater roadster (Boxster) and a three-door, two-seater fastback coupé (Cayman).

The first generation Boxster was introduced in 1996; the second generation Boxster and the Cayman arrived in late 2005; and the third generation launched in 2012. Since the introduction of the fourth generation in 2016, the two models have been marketed as the Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman.

The nameplate Boxster is a portmanteau of boxer, a reference to its flat or boxer engine, and roadster, a reference to the body style. The nameplate Cayman is an alternative spelling of caiman, a member of the alligator family.

Common 2001 Porsche Boxster problems

The Porsche Boxster, produced from 1996 to 2012, is known for its high-performance capabilities and distinctive design. However, like any vehicle, it has faced several common problems over the years, particularly in its early years.

  • Rear Main Seal Leaks: Another common problem in early Boxsters is rear main seal oil leaks. This issue occurs between the engine and transmission joint, where the rear main seal is located. A leaking rear main seal can quickly destroy a clutch in a manual car if not addressed promptly. This issue can be more prevalent in cars that are stored for long periods or in those with high mileage.
  • Engine Management Issues: Early Boxsters, particularly those with the M96 engine, can suffer from engine management issues related to the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and oxygen sensors. These sensors can fail, causing the engine management system to deliver incorrect fuel mixtures, which can lead to a check engine light and potential engine damage.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: The ignition coils on the M96 and M97 Boxster engines have been updated by Porsche multiple times due to their susceptibility to cracking. Low-mileage older cars are particularly prone to this issue. Replacing all ignition coils with the newer, more substantial versions is recommended to prevent misfires and potential engine damage.
  • Electrical Issues: Some Boxsters, particularly those from 2010 to 2011, have experienced electrical problems, including issues with the window seals allowing water to enter and short-circuit the electrics.
  • Suspension and Brake Issues: The Boxster's high-performance nature can put a strain on its suspension and brake components. Worn brakes, scored pads, and uneven tire wear are signs of potential issues in these areas.

When considering a used Porsche Boxster, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and to thoroughly inspect any potential purchase for signs of these issues. A full service history, careful inspection of the engine and transmission, and a test drive can help identify any potential problems before making a purchase. Regular maintenance, including replacing worn parts and addressing any issues promptly, can help ensure a long and trouble-free life for your Boxster.

What is the main problem with the Porsche Boxster?

The two main issues the Boxster and 996 faced at the start of the 2000s were IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing failures and RMS (rear main seal) issues. Contrary to popular belief, both of these issues, although certainly prelevant in both models, were not a guaranteed issue in models of this era.

Are old Porsche Boxsters reliable?

The Porsche Boxster usually needs frequent major and unexpected repairs, according to RepairPal. It has a 2.5 out of 5.0 reliability rating, ranking 12th out of 15 cars in the same category.

Is Porsche Boxster high maintenance?

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP0CB298X1U
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The right front suspension failed. Something broke so that the wheel/brake component bent away from the car causing a sudden left hand turn/jerk. This was confirmed upon exiting the car and looking at the front right semi-attached wheel. The car traveled THROUGH highway safety cables, front windshield shattered, right passenger side arm bag deployed and car stopped in median before going into oncoming traffic. The car is currently being picked up and accessed by insurance company. No warning lamps or messages. The front end did seem to "float" prior to the accident - I figured I had a tire problem and was looking to exit the highway up the road. I went to the ER and had flying glass injuries resulting from the crash. Car is a "garage queen!" I never race or have never been on a race track. I have all records of care. No prior accidents or changes have been made to the car. It is 22 years old and was in excellent shape. I have read about incidents like this since the accident - specific to this car model in online sources. I am reporting this to my local Porsche club also so they can be proactive.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-24
  • VIN: WP0CA29841U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: There are thousands of complaints/postings appearing on the Internet, including fixes, (many of which may be equally dangerous) whereby the vehicle's central locking mechanism fails, making it impossible for passengers to egress through either door or window. The locking mechanism on the driver's side door has a cheap part that is known to commonly fail. When it does, neither the driver nor passenger door may be opened from either inside or outside of the vehicle. The central locking system is tied in with the door lock, and the windows may sometimes also fail when the lock mechanism fails. We had to remove a fuse from her car to reset the windows so we could extricate her. The Internet is replete with unofficial fixes for this problem, frequently using home-made parts, and Porsche representatives commonly acknowledge the issue and charge a great deal to repair using the same flawed parts. In the event of a crash, both driver & passenger may be trapped with no possible means of egress, without disassembling the driver's side door, which would be impossible in an emergency. I am shocked and outraged that this condition has been allowed to go unaddressed for years, despite being so commonly known that there are literally hundreds of Internet posts and videos telling owners how to temporarily fix their cars using either Porsche parts, or in many cases, home-made parts which would also be seriously dangerous. It is unbelievable that NHTSA has never acted on this issue to compel Porsche to make so many thousands of vehicles safe. Merely googling "Porsche Boxster Lock Problem" will produce literally hundreds of videos demonstrating the problem and several home-made fixes. The American driving public deserves better than this from NHTSA and Porsche. Please do something about this while I look for a replacement car for my 16 year old daughter, whom I pray will not ever be in an accident in this car and become trapped, causing her death!!!

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-04-02
  • VIN: WP0CA29831U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I WAS RECENTLY TOLD BY A PORSCHE DEALER THAT THE REAR ENGINES SEALS NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR $2400. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS EXTENSIVELY OVER THE INTERNET, MOST IF NOT ALL PORSCHE BOXSTERS NEED THIS REPLACED BEFORE 60,000 MILES. AND THIS IS DUE TO INAPPROPRIATE SEALS BEING USED UP TO AT LEAST 2004. PORSCHE EVEN DURING THE LATE 1990'S, REPLACED ENGINES UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. IT IS VERY EVIDENT THAT THE ISSUES WITH THE REAR MAIN SEALS ARE AN EPIDEMIC AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR ALL VEHICLES AFFECTED. I CALLED PORSCHE HQ AND THEY DECLINED TO DO ANYTHING UNDER GOOD WILL. IT IS JUST NOT RIGHT WHEN SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED. *JB

  • Summary: PORSCHE BOXSTERS FROM 1999-2004 HAVE A DEFECTIVE REAR ENGINE SEAL WHICH FAILS IN ALL VEHICLES. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL BECAUSE EVEN THE DEALER SAYS IT IS COMMON. THIS IS A VERY COSTLY FIX AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH YEARS AGO. THE NHTSA EVEN HAS TECHNICAL BULLETINS ISSUED ON THIS. THIS IS FAR TOO COMMON OF A DEFECTIVE PART WHICH NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY PORSCHE. THEY HAVE SINCE THEN REPLACED THE REAR SEALS WITH A DIFFERENT TYPE USED ON CAYENNES. *JB

Negative 2001 Porsche Boxster car reviews

  1. Arnoldo Hermiston 2024-08-25

Hi there! I've only had my car for less than a year, but I'm already on the lookout for a new one. My mechanic and I are on a first-name basis because my Boxter seems to always need some attention.

  2. Rafael Steuber 2024-05-03

Although I have owned several air-cooled Porsches in the past, I was disappointed with the reliability of my Boxster. However, I am confident that I can sell it and recover most of my investment.

  3. Damion Mueller 2024-04-10

Hey there! I hope you're enjoying your Boxster. I just wanted to share my experience with you - I found that the car's appearance is what really sells it! While my 1997 Jeep has more options, I still love driving my Boxster. Just a heads up, if you're planning on reselling it, you may not get the full amount you paid for it. But hey, that's the case with most cars, right? Thanks for choosing Porsche!

Positive 2001 Porsche Boxster car reviews

  1. Dylan Runolfsdottir 2024-11-25

This is my second Porsche. I had a 1986 911 Carrera which I sold and bought the Boxster S. This car is just as fun to drive as my 911 Carrera, but it's more comfortable and has a convertible top. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Porsches.

  2. Terrance Prohaska 2024-11-16

This car is so much fun to drive! Its looks, speed, and handling are all amazing and it's definitely a head turner. The engine power is great and the passing gear acceleration is excellent. The interior design is fantastic, allowing you to easily speak to one another with the top down at any speed. In my opinion, it's one of the best sports cars I have ever owned or been in. The instrument panel is simple and all controls are easy to access.

  3. Kristian Haley 2024-11-15

Great car, it's the best I've ever owned.

  4. Sheridan Aufderhar 2024-11-06

Hey there! I just wanted to share a little bit about my first car. It was actually a gift from my uncle, who had held onto it for all these years just for me. Can you believe it? The car is a bit older now, with over 149K miles on it, but it still runs like a dream (with a few replacements here and there, of course). I love driving it with the top down - it's so much fun! I highly recommend this car, it's definitely my favorite. Thanks for listening!

  5. Jayme Larson 2024-10-25

Congratulations on your purchase of a Boxster! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it. The handling, steering, balance, and brakes all sound fantastic, and it's impressive that you've had no unscheduled maintenance in 56,000 miles. With its great fuel economy and lack of water leaks, it sounds like you made a wise choice. Thanks for sharing your experience and advice on purchasing a used Boxster. It's always important to have an experienced Porsche mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection to avoid any surprises. Enjoy your ride!
