2010 Subaru Forester problems
The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.
First generation (SF; 1997)
The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Japan
In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.
The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.
When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

Common 2010 Subaru Forester problems
The 2010 Subaru Forester has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its exhaust system, head gasket, catalytic converter, and heat shields.
- Head Gasket Failure: The 2010 Subaru Forester is known for its head gasket issues, which can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly. One owner reported a coil pack shorting, which is a common symptom of head gasket failure. This problem can be expensive to repair, with some owners reporting bills of over $4,000.
- Heat Shield Rattling: Several owners have reported issues with the heat shield rattling, which can be a persistent problem. Despite repeated attempts to fix the issue at the dealership, some owners have had to pay mechanics to re-solder or remove the heat shield entirely to resolve the issue.
- Battery Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the battery, including premature failure and the need for frequent replacements. One owner reported needing a new battery once a year, while another had to replace their battery mid-winter after it died suddenly.
- Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, including noises and difficulty shifting. In some cases, switching the transmission and ECU has not resolved the problem, and further investigation into sensors, wiring harnesses, and connections may be necessary.
- Faulty Sensors: Owners have reported issues with sensors in the system, including sensors related to the transmission and ECU. These problems can be hard to trace and may require taking the vehicle to a Subaru dealer or auto transmission specialist for diagnosis and repair.
In summary, the 2010 Subaru Forester has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including exhaust issues, head gasket failure, heat shield rattling, battery problems, transmission issues, and faulty sensors. These problems can be expensive to repair and may require taking the vehicle to a specialist for diagnosis and repair.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-24
- VIN: JF2SH6CC6AH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: On 5/24/2023 while driving with a front passenger, the passenger seat belt warning light, chime and airbag warning came on for no reason. Stopped the car at a red traffic light and turned ignition off and then on to hopefully clear the warning. There was no power to any system. The ignition switch did not work and I could not get the transmission out of park to push the car off the road. Could not activated anything on the dash including the hazard warning. Being in a single lane road, traffic was traveling around us on both sides. We could have been rear ended. I opened the driver's door and all power to the dash came back. It took 4 attempts to start before the engine started. All settings and radio had to be reprogrammed. Stopped at the dealer and they ask if this was the first occurence. (It was) They said if it happened again to bring the car in. The car has been normal since.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-26
- VIN: JF2SH6CCXAH
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: My 2010 Subaru Forester's driver seat does not raise up on with the power buttons. I can hear the motor but the front of the seat will not move. Last week, the right side was not moving and now both sides are not. I can physically move the front half of the seat up and down. I can see that the welds on the front arms are off of the frame of the seat rails. If I was in a collision, the whole seat might come off if it is not secured and my safety would be compromised. I called Subaru of America and received a case number. I also plan on taking the car into dealer for an inspection. No warning lights appeared. When I move the seats with the buttons, I sometimes hear a grinding noise. This collapsing seat issue with 2010 Foresters has been found on internet sites. The car was not involved in an accident and I am the primary driver and weigh under 160 lbs.
SEATS PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-10
- VIN: JF2SH6BC4AH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The Subaru Bracket for the Sun Visor and the Rod on the Sun visor itself are made very poorly and will break very often, I had to replace my driver side once a year because I went to use it when the sun was glaring in my face on the highway and it just fell off onto my hands and other time in my face. This event of having something unexpected distract my focus and trigger a startled response while driving at a time the requires focus, attention, and awareness is altered in a way my and other lives are serioulsy at risk. II have almost been I near serious accidents each time this happens; I have gotten really lucky and that's only because im always on guard bc of my anxiety, cant say anyone else would be as lucky as me. The issue is the brace uses cheap plastic and also instead of making the piece that is known to break thicker they made it as thin as possible to save money most likely. the bracket should be completely metal in my professional option considering how much force the sun visor rod that plugged into it requires. No ones life should be a risk like this, nor should any customer have to pay $100 for a new retail cost of one that is unjust for a company to make a customer pay for a defective flawed part of there vehicle that should have been recalled long ago and never was. the first one was replaced under warranty when the Subaru dealer I went to was part of Nissan, then I bought one from the new store a year later, and then from the Rafferty store, and again this week from the new Concordville part store. (I dont have my invoice from the current part I just ordered) There is more then one day of incident, one in 2017, one in 2018, 2019, 2020, and again this year 12/10/2021. cant find other invoiced. The date of incident for the previous would be same day or next day for invoice dates for new visor. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-30
- VIN: jf2sh6dc6ah
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I bought a 2010 Subaru Forester vehicle on 05/22/2021 from AutoFair Subaru dealer at 503 Broadway, Haverhill, MA 01832. The car engine was making noises from the day 1 of this purchase. I reported this to the dealership but they denied the facts. Rather they said that I did not know how to drive and was making jokes at me. In month 3 (07/17/21), there was a warning sign on the dashboard. I took the car to them. There was a leak in the tire. It got fixed. I returned with the engine noise still in the car. In month 4 (08/21/21), again there was a safety sign on the dashboard. There was a oil leak in the engine. They charged me a huge amount of bill to repair this. Last Saturday on 10/30/2021, I was going to Walmart. I was on highway I-495 just a could of miles away from the exit, the car engine light was flashing. The engine sound gets louder. As soon as I pulled the car to the roadside, the engine stopped and the whole car was full of smoke. My life was on danger last Saturday. I called the dealer on Monday (11/01/2021). Again, they denied the facts. I demand a full refund of this purchase to avoid any life threatening car accidents in the future.

The contact called the manufacturer and they informed her to tow the vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it remained in their possession and was not yet diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-02
- VIN: Jf2sh6cc4ah
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Head gasket suddenly failed on the highway. This is a known problem Subaru has yet to address and has been present on all their models up to 2010. This is something that Subaru should have addressed years ago but are allowing people to put the safety at risk due to negligence
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-20
- VIN: JF2SH6FC7AH
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel pump failed (connection wiring harness burned up) inside the fuel tank. If this had happened a little later, we would have been in the middle of the interstate and could have been in a horrific wreck. Or if there had been any oxygen in the fuel tank, the car would have burned up completely. The fuel pump failure was found by my mechanic, and when I called Subaru to let them know that this occurred and that I felt unsafe, they said, well parts fail, your car has lots of miles on it and is fairly old, we can't do anything for you unless a recall is issued. I was driving and pulled up to get on to a highway (55MPH) and in construction there is a stop sign. When I stopped and then tried to pull out, my 2010 Subaru Forester died immediately. No gas pressure, no nothing. All the lights flashed and then the car stopped. I was in the middle of a big intersection and had to direct cars around me, push the car off the highway interchange and have it towed home. There were no lights/warning or anything that came on before the car failed. Australia has recalled this specific thing for subarus there, but despite many other people having this same issue, Subaru of America is not offering to back up the safety of their cars -- even tho they are 'supposidely the safest on the road, in collision or driving'. I urge you all do recall this. I cannot imagine if we had been 10 yards further in our drive and this happened, both myself and my passenger would be dead.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-20
- VIN: JF2SH6DCXAH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: At 90,000 miles the head gaskets need replacing (a $2600 repair) on a 2010 car that has been taken care of, all oil changes, all maintenance has been done to. Seems like a failed part. Noticed others have complained about the same issue. Just curious how long head gaskets should last under normal use?
WHEELS,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-19
- VIN: JF2SH6DC4AH
- Components: WHEELS,ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased this 2010 Subaru Forester from a private party in 2/2021. It had about 98500 miles, ran smoothly, had service records and was up to date in maintenance. It stalled out in traffic due to low fuel and oil issues. There was oil showing on the dipstick but also oil leaking under the engine when checked at a Subaru service dept. I now found that oil leaks and problems are common according to articles on line. It will cost thousands to either replace the seals or the engine!! For a vehicle of this caliber I expected years of services not immediate oil issues. This is a potential seizing of the engine issue. It consumes too much oil due to the leaks. Is there any pending lawsuits I can join to cover these repairs? Secondly the low tire light is on at all times. Air pressure has been triple checked to no avail.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-30

The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

- Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback vehicles, certain model year 2006 through 2012 Tribeca vehicles sold before January 2012, and certain model year 2009 through 2012 Forester vehicles sold before January 2012. Up to 78,650 of these vehicles may have been equipped with accessory puddle lights that, when illuminated, brighten the area under the doors of the vehicle. A short circuit can develop when either the puddle light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source (such as road spray that has road salt in it) and it penetrates the circuit board of the puddle light or the pins of the puddle light connector(s).
- Consequence: Over time, migration of the moisture into the circuit board and/or into the connector cavity, may result in a short circuit of the puddle light system. This may generate heat which may melt the plastic resulting in smoke or fire.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fused-harness, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.

As a long-time Subaru owner, I'm considering trying something new next time. While I still love the way my Subaru drives, I do wish they would bring more current technologies to their customers. The stereo is absolutely terrible with no Bluetooth or dedicated iPod connection, and even the Limited model lacks sunvisor vanity mirrors with illumination and a light in the glove box. Come on, Subaru! The 4-speed transmission wasn't a huge concern for me, but it does show a lack of willingness to keep up with current trends. Additionally, the interior materials don't quite measure up to those of other cars in its class. If Subaru wants to keep loyal customers like me, they need to add some class to the fun!

Great car! It has lots of room and awesome reliability.

As someone who used to own both Honda and Toyota cars, I came across the information in Consumer Reports about the Forester. After reading that review, as well as Edmunds' and considering the fact that one of my sons owns one, I decided to buy our first Forester. I must say, this car rides so much better than our Honda CR-V. I have a feeling that this won't be our last Subaru.

My 06 Forester had a persistent rattle from the day I drove it off the lot, and unfortunately, the 2010 Forrester I purchased did not fare any better. Both the passenger and driver side doors began to rattle within a month, and despite my dealer's efforts, the source of the issue remains elusive. While the vehicle boasts great mileage, handling, and utility, the incessant rattling detracts from the overall driving experience. I am considering exploring other options, such as Honda or Toyota, despite their higher cost compared to Subaru. I reached out to Subaru Corporate, but their response was unhelpful, simply directing me to contact my dealer. As a manufacturer, they should take responsibility for their products.

I would describe the Forester as a great all-around vehicle. It performs well in many areas, including seating five people, towing small trailers, handling dirt roads and snow, providing a large storage area, and offering good visibility and highway manners. Overall, it is a very reliable and solid vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you that we recently sold our SUV that we had purchased back in 2012. Unfortunately, it became quite expensive to maintain due to some engine problems. Despite that, it had great fuel economy and was a pretty compact size. We ended up selling it with 111k miles on it, so it definitely had some wear and tear. Thanks for listening!

This 2010 model SUV has some room for improvement in terms of basic features when compared to other vehicles in its class. One of the areas that could use some work is the driving position, which can be uncomfortable due to the plastic parts sticking out and causing leg pain. Additionally, the sound system, lack of auto on headlights, and absence of Bluetooth are areas that could be improved. However, I appreciate the quality and reliability that the Subaru brand offers. While the MPG could be better, I have found the off-road ability to be great. Overall, if you're looking for a luxury interior, this may not be the vehicle for you, but if you prioritize off-road capability and reliability, it's definitely worth considering!

Let me break it down for you. Although the car's performance may be satisfactory, the rattling noise can be quite distracting. The rattling initially started in the rear of the vehicle, and despite the dealership's suggestion that it was the license plate, the rattling has now spread to the front driver and passenger side windows. Given the noise, I would only recommend this vehicle to someone who is hard of hearing.

I bought my first Subaru in 2001 and it was perfect, rock solid till the day I sold it last week. The new replacement, an XT, sure looks nice, BUT... it rattles something fierce and all over. Sometimes the headlights won't work (had to shut the truck off and restart to get it working). Maybe it's a windows software issue? The drivetrain makes bad noises when turning and the turbo (maybe) made a bad squealing sound for miles when I first started the truck. I figured it's under warranty, so I'll let it blow up. The rear window for some reason wants to open with no one pushing buttons. The heater works in reverse. I have a small book for repairs. Will I buy another Subaru? I think not. Too bad I didn't keep my old model, but that's my fault.

I appreciate the designs and safety features of Subarus, however, I have experienced extensive repair problems with all three of my cars. Unfortunately, my 2010 Forester had transmission issues at around 110,000 miles and required replacement. Additionally, it is currently burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, which seems to be a common issue according to a Subaru complaint site. My previous Outback had a head gasket failure twice, costing around $2,000 each time, before we decided to sell it. My first Sedan had expensive axle problems and ruined synchronizer rings. While I cannot recommend this car due to the high repair bills, I hope that Subaru can address these issues in the future.
