The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Japan
In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.
The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.
When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

I FOLLOWED THE RECOMMENDED MAINTANENCE SCHEDULE GIVEN TO ME BY SUBARU AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY AMMENDMENTS TO THAT SCHEDULE SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- Summary: CLUTCH CHATTERS BADLY AND CLUTCH DOES NOT ENGAGE UNTIL THE PEDAL IS ALMOST FULLY DEPRESSED WHEN VEHICLE SITS OVERNIGHT. PROBLEM SEEMS MORE PRONOUNCED IN COLDER WEATHER, BUT OCCURS IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS. IN ADDITION TO CAUSING AN UNSAFE DRIVING SITUATION, THE CONDITION MAY CAUSE FIRST AND REVERSE GEARS TO GRIND WHEN SELECTING THESE GEARS FROM A STOP. AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY AND THE CLUTCH OPERATES NORMALLY. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED TO SUBARU REPAIR SHOPS NUMEROUS TIMES, INCLUDING AT 33,220; 59,451; 74,213; AND 92,380 MILES. THE SUBARU REPAIR SHOPS CAN USUALLY DUPLICATE THE CHATTER, BUT THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE CLUTCH ENGAGING ONLY AFTER BEING ALMOST COMPLETELY DEPRESSED. AT 92,380 MILES THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN ONLY 1.5 MILES IN THE MORNING TO THE SUBARU REPAIR SHOP WITH THE POOR CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT STILL OCCURRING, AND THE SUBARU REPAIR SHOP SAID THEY STILL COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE ENTIRE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY WAS REMOVED AND REPAIRED SHORTLY AFTER THE 33,220 MILE SERVICE COMPLAINT AT SUBARUS EXPENSE, BUT THE PROBLEM RETURNED WITHIN A FEW THOUSAND MILES. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it from a friend 2 years ago for $7500 and it has been amazing! It's a reliable little SUV that has taken me on many adventures. I've put about 25000 miles on it and the only maintenance required was to replace a couple of CV boots, which was cheap. It's definitely the best used car I've ever owned. I get about 27 mpg driving 65-75 mph, which gives me about 300 miles a tank. Thanks for listening!

Test drove several different vehicles and settled on a Subaru. I am very glad I did. It has good performance, requires low maintenance, and tows well. At 88k, it has been great with regular maintenance. I wish we still had the second one. Unfortunately, we lost it due to a poor repair job and have been upset ever since. We are still negotiating for a full repair or replacement as part of the settlement. The one we have now is an '89 with 83k.

You've had your '98 Forester for a year/14,000 and couldn't be happier with it. The mileage is good (21/27) and so is the power. The seat adjustment range is wide enough that most everyone gets comfy. It hauls a lot of stuff and the passenger room is good. You mentioned that you replaced the speakers and it sounds better, but the system could use an upgrade. You also needed good all-season tires with low noise, but still, the noise is acceptable. It sounds like you're going to be driving this puppy for a loooong time!

Overall, I would definitely consider buying another Forester! It has been a reliable car with zero problems and still sounds as good as the day I bought it. The only thing I would say is that it would have been nice if speed control was standard on the 'L' model, but that's just a minor complaint.

When I first visited our local Subaru dealer, the salesman was very helpful and informative. He told me all about the reliability, value, driving safety and longevity of the vehicles. When I asked him if they had any used Subarus that I could look at, he explained that once people bought one, they tended to keep it. After owning this car for a little over two years now, I completely understand what he meant. Not only is this car fun to drive, but it also gets me to all the places I want to go, especially when I go fishing. Additionally, it has plenty of storage space in the back and can very comfortably carry four people.

This vehicle has been driven for an impressive 264,000 miles, but unfortunately, the blown head gaskets have caused the cooling system to overheat. The cost of repairs is estimated at $1800.00, which is not a feasible investment for an older vehicle with a bad electrical system. Despite some shifting issues at 200k miles, this car has proven to be a tough and enjoyable ride. However, the MPG has been disappointing, with a maximum of 15MPG in the city and 20MPG on the highway.

Consider investing in a Toyota or Honda instead of a Subaru. Our experience with a Subaru after the 60,000 warranty was not satisfactory due to transmission failure. Despite seeking assistance from the dealer and other mechanics, the issue persisted. Additionally, we found that the Forrester did not perform as well in the snow as we had hoped. It is important to make an informed decision when purchasing a vehicle.

This car is excellent for snow conditions. It performs flawlessly when taken skiing and has never had any issues with handling or starting in below zero weather. The air conditioning and heating systems are both fast and efficient. Although the seats are not very comfortable and can cause discomfort during long trips, the vehicle itself is highly reliable.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you learned to drive on a Subaru - they're such great cars! In my experience, Subarus are generally very reliable. I personally own a '98 Forester with 125k miles on it, and while I've had a few minor mechanical issues (like needing to replace the CV joints and thermostat), overall it's been a great car. Of course, like any car, it's had its fair share of major issues too - I've had to do some pretty extensive repairs on the front end and rear rotors, and the automatic transmission has been shifting pretty hard into and out of 1st gear lately. Plus, there's a bit of a noise during start-ups that I'm pretty sure is a bent rod. But even with all that, I still love my Forester! The handling is great, and the AWD works beautifully - I've had plenty of chances to hydroplane, but the wheels always catch the road instantly. And even though it's got a low profile, it still has twice the cargo room of a regular car, which is so convenient. Thanks for listening to my Subaru love story!
