2004 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.

First generation (SF; 1997)

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Japan

In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.

The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.

When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

  • Wheel Bearings: The main symptom of a bad wheel bearing is a humming noise that gets louder at highway speeds. Replacing the wheel bearing might require 2.5-3.0 hours of labor plus the part.
  • Powertrain: The Forester offers two engines of the EJ25 family: the 173-hp 4-cylinder 2.5L SOHC and the turbo-charged 224-hp 2.5L DOHC. Both engines have a timing belt that must be replaced at recommended intervals. The turbo-charged DOHC engine requires premium gasoline. The engine oil capacity is listed at 4.2 US qt (4.0 liters, 3.5 Imp qt).

In summary, the Subaru Forester 2004 is known for several common problems, including head gasket failure, engine noises, airbag issues, excessive oil consumption, fuel tank one-way valve problems, rust and rot, heat shield rattling, wheel bearing humming, and powertrain issues. It's essential to be aware of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the vehicle's proper functioning and safety.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-20
  • VIN: JF1SG63694H
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: MY DAUGHTER (DRIVER) AND A PASSENGER PULLED SLOWLY OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY IN REVERSE, HEADING OFF TO COLLEGE (100 MILES AWAY) BUT JUST AFTER PULLING OUT IN THE STREET, THE RIGHT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM OF HER 2004 SUBARU FORESTER BROKE IN HALF DUE TO RUST/CORROSION. I WAS ABLE TO INCH THE CAR BACK INTO MY GARAGE AND ON JACKS ONLY TO FIND THE RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE IN HALF. I CHECKED THE OTHER LOWER LEFT CONTROL ARM AND IT WAS VERY RUSTED. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST SUBARU DEALER. THE SUBARU DEALER NOTIFIED ME THAT SUBARU RECALL WVX-34: FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM/TRANSVERSE LINK, ISSUED 09/11 HAD BEEN COMPLETED FOR THIS 2004 FORESTER IN 12/11. I WAS TOLD THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS WERE NOT REPLACED IN 2011, BUT THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS WERE TREATED WITH THE RECALL-PRESCRIBED RUST/CORROSION PREVENTION. THIS "FIXED" RECALL LASTED ONLY 7 YEARS! INITIALLY, THE SUBARU DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT COVER THE COST TO REPLACE THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS; HOWEVER, AS I PLACED A CALL WITH SUBARU OF AMERICA (SOA), I RECEIVED ANOTHER PHONE CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP STATING THAT THEY CONTACTED THEIR "REP" AND AGREED TO PAY 50/50 TOWARDS THE COST OF REPLACING BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS. I DISCUSSED THIS VERY UNSAFE ISSUE WITH TWO DIFFERENT SOA REPRESENTATIVES, ONE OF WHICH WAS A SUPERVISOR. SOA LET ME KNOW THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF THIS REPAIR BECAUSE IT WAS A 2004. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? MY DAUGHTER WAS GETTING READY TO MAKE A DEADLY 100 MILE TRIP IN THIS VEHICLE CLAIMED TO HAVE BEEN "FIXED" BY SUBARU JUST SEVEN YEARS PREVIOUS. HOW NEGLIGENT IS THIS, COMING FROM A COMPANY CLAIMING TO HAVE MORE CARS ON THE ROAD THAN ANYONE ELSE AND SAFER THAN OTHERS? I HAVE FOUR SUBARUS (04' FORESTER, 05' FORESTER XT, 08 TRIBECA LTD., AND 2010 IMPREZA) AND I'VE LOST MY FAITH IN THIS ORGANIZATION. THIS IS A DEADLY RECALL THAT SOA IS IGNORING.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-17
  • VIN: JF1SG696244
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE CONTROL ARM FELL OFF. THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE FELL TO THE GROUND. THE OTHER ONE IS ALMOST COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. THE RECALL ON THIS PART ALLOWED THE DEALER TO USE THEIR DISCRETION TO EITHER REPLACE THE CONTROL ARMS, OR SPRAY RUST PROOFING OVER CORROSION, WHICH THEY DID. THIS OBVIOUSLY DOES NOT STOP THE RUSTING, AND IT EVENTUALLY RUSTED THROUGH. I LUCKILY WAS NOT INJURED. I AM QUESTIONING THE ADEQUACY OF THE EXISTING SAFETY RECALL. TO ALLOW THE DEALER TO DECIDE IF THE CORROSION IS LIGHT ENOUGH TO SIMPLY SPRAY RUST PROOFING OVER IT SEEMS LUDICROUS. RUST PROOFING DOES NOT STOP CORROSION FROM CONTINUING WHEN IT HAS ALREADY BEGUN. I CALLED SUBARU USA TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPLACE THE CONTROL ARMS. THEY WOULD NOT, AND WOULD PROVIDE NO COMPENSATION, AS THEY FEEL THEIR RUSTPROOFING SATISFIED THE RECALL. THE SAFETY RECALL IS FOR THE LIFE OF A VEHICLE. IF THEIR RUSTPROOFING DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, WHICH IT OBVIOUSLY DID NOT, WHY SHOULDN'T THEY BE REQUIRED TO FIX IT CORRECTLY? CONTROL ARMS SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED TO RUST AWAY AND FALL OFF A CAR! HOW DANGEROUS! I'M SURE I'M NOT THE ONLY VEHICLE OWNER WHOSE CONTROL ARMS EVENTUALLY ROTTED AWAY AFTER THE CORROSION WAS 'RUSTPROOFED' OVER BY SUBARU. SO DANGEROUS! I AM ASKING THAT SUBARU BE REQUIRED TO COVER THE COSTS OF THESE CONTROL ARMS! AND ALSO, I AM REQUESTING THE NHTSA TO AGREE AND ADVISE SUBARU THAT A SAFETY RECALL ACTION THAT DOES NOT ULTIMATELY FIX THE SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED CLOSED/COMPLETED.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-07
  • VIN: JF1SG65624H
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN A STATE HIGHWAY(RTE. 195), I EXPERIENCED A SEVERE VIBRATION AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED LIMIT IN THE LEFT FRONT DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL. I PULLED OVER TO A BREAKDOWN LANE AND GOT OUT TO VISUALLY INSPECT THE WHEEL AND SURROUNDING AREA FOR ANY SIGN OF TROUBLE AND DID NOT NOTICE ANY. THE FOLLOWING DAY WHILE DRIVING THE SAME HIGHWAY THE VIBRATION AGAIN OCCURRED BUT ON A MORE FREQUENT BASIS. I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION AND DID MY BUSINESS. WHILE REVERSING AND TURNING THE VIBRATION HAPPENED AGAIN BUT MORE INTENSELY AT THIS TIME. I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE DOWN A SMALLER STATE HIGHWAY(RTE. 6) WHERE I COULD GO A SLOWER SPEED AND FOUND THAT THE VIBRATION HAD GOTTEN EXTREME TO A POINT OF WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE THE WHEEL LOCKED UP AND I EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I PROCEEDED TO A FAMILY MEMBERS HOUSE, PARKED AND JACKED THE VEHICLE UP AND REMOVED THE WHEEL. UPON INSPECTION I DISCOVERED THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD IN FACT ROTTED TO A POINT OF IT SNAPPING AT THE MIDPOINT AND THUS DISCOVERED THE MECHANICAL ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE. A SAFETY RECALL WAS ISSUED BY SUBARU DEALERS OF AMERICA AND AS PER THE VIN MY VEHICLE IS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THE CONTROL ARM NEITHER APPEARS RUSTPROOFED NOR REPLACED AS PER THE RECALL.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-17
  • VIN: JF1SG69614H
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY FORESTER HAS BEGUN TO SMELL LIKE GAS WHEN IT IS TURNED ON WHILE IT IS COLD OUTSIDE. A FUEL LINE IS LEAKING ON THE RIGHT SIDE FUEL RAIL. THE FUEL IS LEAKING RIGHT NEXT TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THE TURBO (SEE, REALLY HOT PARTS, SEE ALSO, DANGEROUS). THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE CAR AND IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS RIGHT TO REQUIRE OWNERS TO PAY HUNDREDS TO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO KEEP THEIR CARS FROM BURSTING IN TO FLAMES. PLEASE SEE ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE AND DO SOMETHING TO PROTECT AND REIMBURSE THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLES FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE. THANK YOU.

Negative 2004 Subaru Forester car reviews

I purchased this car based on Consumer reviews, but unfortunately it has spent a lot of time in the shop for various repairs such as valves, clutch, brakes, radio, etc. While the car handles well, it lacks power and space for kids. It has been the most expensive car I've ever owned due to the amount of time and money spent on repairs. Although I usually keep my cars for 10+ years, I am looking forward to parking this one under a tree and walking away from it. I have found that Subaru dealerships can be a bit overconfident in their belief of what they read in consumer reports, which can lead to a frustrating experience when dealing with repairs. For example, when my valves failed after only 60k miles, I was made to feel like it was my fault. Additionally, be prepared for long waits for parts - it took 3 weeks to get a new rear windshield wiper arm. Unfortunately, none of the needed work has been covered under warranty.

This car may be well-regarded by some, but I don't quite understand why. There are plenty of other great alternatives out there that may be worth considering. Additionally, the recommended maintenance can be quite expensive, and when you factor in the cost of wheel bearings and head gaskets, it can feel like you're buying another car altogether. While the car is marketed as being suitable for harsh weather and service, it doesn't seem to be built to handle it very well. Before making a purchase, it may be worth doing some research on head gaskets and wheel bearings to see if this car is truly the right fit for you.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know about a little incident I had at a red light. Unfortunately, my foot slipped from the brake to the gas and I bumped into the 1987 Chevy mini-SUV in front of me. Thankfully, there was no noticeable damage to the Chevy, which already had some wear and tear. The driver was very understanding and didn't mind leaving things as they were, especially when he saw how upset I was. Unfortunately, my Subaru Forrester didn't fare as well. It sustained nearly $6k worth of damage and couldn't even leave the scene under its own power. The radiator burst and the entire front end, hood, and much of the engine had to be replaced. It's such a shame, especially since the vehicle only had 400 miles on it. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

I have had my 04 XS for 5 years now, generally speaking, it's a good car. It is reliable and gets 28-30 mpg highway, front seats are comfortable, back seats are tight, car is sporty and stylish, great traction in bad weather, massive sunroof, BUT...this car has problems. From day 1, car bucks after filling with gas (dealer can't explain), wind noise on highway is horrendous, check engine light goes on and off at will, moving drivers seat causes airbag light to go on, sunroof track broken-they want $1500 bucks to replace, vibration from engine Y-pipe drives us crazy (dealer again can't fix), now the rear end has a very loud humming noise as if its about to go. Car only has 62k miles.

Congratulations on your new XT automatic! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. The extra displacement of the XT compared to the WRX automatic means more torque and better acceleration off the line, which is perfect for American driving styles. The seats are also very comfortable and the interior is user-friendly, making it a great choice for drivers of all sizes. While the WRX wagon might have the advantage in handling, the XT is still a practical and fun choice. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Lorenza Stracke 2024-11-06

Subaru really hit a bullseye with this 2003 Forester model. I have a silver 2.5x model that came packaged with the optional security alarm, armrest extender, mudguards, chrome tailpipe and hood deflector. This crossover SUV is sized right and looks sharp, with very good room, comfort and performance. With its venerable boxer engine, all-wheel drive and ABS standard, along with a host of other amenities, it truly is a great value for the price!

  3. Werner Welch 2024-11-03

This is our second Forester. Our first, a 98, was trouble-free for 118K miles. When I drove the turbo, I knew I wanted it. The XT version is seriously quick, gobbling up hills and unsuspecting large SUVs or pickups that are inclined to play games.

  4. Conor Hauck 2024-08-28

Overall, this is the best car I have ever had. It's like having the utility of a station wagon/SUV, but with the guts of a sports car. With a little bit of tuning, this car can even compete with a stock STi. Without a doubt, this car is the wolf in sheep's clothing.

  5. Korey Johnson 2024-08-23

I see that you recently purchased this car and have not yet commented on its reliability. I test drove both the XT turbo and non-turbo XS and found both to be quite enjoyable. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the turbo 2.5 engine's goodness and tractability. It has tons of torque and no turbo wind-up. The motor operates effortlessly in day-to-day driving, making it much less frenetic than most cars. It can easily get the job done at low RPM, resulting in a smooth and quiet ride. This car has two personalities, with the main and most useful one being a very competent and comfortable daily driver. However, if you push the accelerator past half, it just takes off without any noise or fanfare.
