2003 Subaru Forester problems
The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.
First generation (SF; 1997)
The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Japan
In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.
The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.
When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

Common 2003 Subaru Forester problems
The Subaru Forester, particularly the 2003 model, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Airbag Recall: The 2003 to 2008 Subaru Forester was affected by a major recall for airbags. The inflator can fail, causing the airbag to break completely and burst, leaving a driver in an accident with no protection. It could also send fragments of metal in the airbag’s place. A recall has been issued, and it is advised to bring the vehicle to a Subaru dealership for inspection and repair.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: The 2003 to 2008 Subaru Forester has been known to excessively burn oil, meaning owners have had to add an extra quart to a quart and ½ every oil change, and in extreme cases may have to add a quart every 1,000 miles or so. The engine’s design allows oil to sneak by the pistons in some areas and burn up in the combustion chamber, causing excessive consumption. Subaru has a test to find out if your Forester is excessively burning motor oil.
- Rust or Rotting at the Front of the Vehicle: Moisture and road salt can leak into areas underneath the front of the vehicle and rust them out. If you see rot on the lower control arm bracket, you can also find rot up along the top. This is a common issue in areas where roads are salted during the winter.
- Powertrain Issues: The Forester offers two engines of the EJ25 family: the 173-hp 4-cylinder 2.5L SOHC and the turbo-charged 224-hp 2.5L DOHC. Both engines have a timing belt that must be replaced at recommended intervals. The turbo-charged DOHC engine requires premium gasoline. Failed catalytic converters have been reported by many owners, typically causing the Check Engine light with the code P0420.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual with a Hill Holder clutch or a 4-speed automatic. Loose exhaust heatshields can cause a rattling noise at certain rpms, and wheel bearings can cause a humming noise that gets louder at highway speeds. Replacing the wheel bearing might require 2.5-3.0 hours of labor plus the part.
When buying a used Subaru Forester, it is recommended to avoid the vehicle if the engine has previously overheated, as overheating can lead to a variety of issues in the future. Keep an eye out for coolant and oil leaks, as the repair could be quite costly. A burnt oil or coolant smell coming under the hood is an indication of leaks. For models with a manual transmission, test the clutch. Watch out for a piston slap and other engine noises (tapping or knocking) when the car is started cold. Check if the timing belt has been replaced. If you notice blue smoke from exhaust, or from under the hood, especially when the engine is started, avoid the car.

- Summary: Safety Recall: WVX34 NHTSA Campaign: 11V464000 The front lower passenger side control arm completely rusted in half. It occurred while parking vehicle, fortunately not driving at high speed. The recall was previously completed by Subaru dealership in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2011. According to service records, they had been treated with anti-corrosion coating... I purchased the vehicle from a family member of the original owner, weeks ago, December 2021. It had been serviced regularly by the dealership and now has 162,000 miles. This structural failure of the lower control arm could have been extremely disastrous if driving at speed on the road or highway! I contacted my local dealership in Traverse City, MI, and was told by the service advisor the recall had been completed and would not be covered again for subsequent replacement. My vehicle is undrivable and Subaru is not standing behind their parts or workmanship.

- Summary: I HAVE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE PROPOSED RECALL REMEDY FOR NHTSA ID: 21E002000 . THE NOTICE SAYS, "NINGBO WILL NOTIFY DISTRIBUTORS, AND OWNERS, AND WILL REPLACE THE BULB WITH HALOGEN BULBS, FREE OF CHARGE." THIS OFFERED REPLACEMENT OF THEIR DEFECTIVE LED BULB WITH A HALOGEN BULB IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE RECALL REMEDY BECAUSE LED BULBS ARE FAR SUPERIOR TO HALOGEN BULBS. ESPECIALLY LED BULBS LAST MUCH LONGER AND DRAIN MUCH LESS POWER FROM THE CAR'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM THAN HALOGEN BULBS. I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THEIR LED BULBS BECAUSE OF THESE ADVANTAGES AND REPLACING THEM WITH INFERIOR HALOGEN BULBS DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF HAVING BOUGHT LED BULBS TO BEGIN WITH.

- Summary: THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM SEPARATED AT THE WELD SEAM WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE CAR. THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE SWUNG REARWARD AND OUTWARD BECAUSE THE FRONT PORTION OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE CONTROL ARM. THIS PULLED THE CAR OFF THE ROAD BUT LUCKILY SHE WAS TRAVELING AT A SLOW SPEED ON A SIDE ROAD ON HER WAY TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR STOPPED BEFORE CRASHING. HAD THIS HAPPENED AT ANY NORMAL ROAD SPEED SHE WOULD LIKELY HAVE DIED FROM A COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE CAR AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THERE WAS A RECALL IN 2011 ON THESE CARS FOR THIS VERY CONDITION. MY CAR SHOWS "COMPLETE" IN THEIR SYSTEM FOR THIS RECALL BUT IT WAS EITHER NOT ACTUALLY COMPLETED OR THE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE EQUALLY AS DANGEROUS AND NEED TO BE RECALLED AGAIN. I NOTIFIED SUBARU OF AMERICA AND TOOK THE CAR TO A SUBARU DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO REVIEW BUT SUBARU OF AMERICA WAS NOT CONCERNED SAYING IT SHOWED COMPLETE SO THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. SINCE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME I HAVE FOUND OTHERS ONLINE WHO HAD SUBARU DEALERS COMPLETE THE RECALL WITHOUT CHANGING SEVERELY CORRODED LOWER CONTROL ARMS JUST LIKE MINE. I AM AFRAID THAT OTHER PEOPLE OR THEIR CHILDREN ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING THEIR LIVES DUE TO SUBARU'S NEGLIGENCE. MANUFACTURER: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-05-26
- VIN: JF1SG63663H
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY RECALLED IN 2011/2012 FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V464000 NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE11011. AT TIME, DEALER CONDUCTED PUNCH TEST AND DETERMINED LOWER CONTROL ARM TO "PASS" AND USED SOME TYPE OF ANTI-CORROSION SPRAY. FAST FORWARD TO 2017 AND LOWER CONTROL ARMS HAVE "FAILED" PUNCH TEST WITH SIGNIFICANT CORROSION. I ONLY DETECTED THIS FAILED, AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING CONDITION OF VEHICLE, BY PERSONALLY INSPECTING UNDER CARRIAGE PRIOR TO GIVING VEHICLE TO 16 YEAR-OLD SON AS FIRST CAR. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW MANY OF THESE SUBARU FORESTERS THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY, AND QUITE CONVENIENTLY DETERMINED TO PASS BY PUNCH TEST, ARE OUT THERE ON THE STREETS AND HIGHWAYS WITH POTENTIAL SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES TO THE UNKNOWING OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. I RESPECTFULLY SUBMIT THAT SUBARU SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPTION TO "PUNCH" TEST THESE LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE TO REPLACE THESE CRITICAL PARTS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SUBARU ADDRESS THE ISSUE. TO DATE, I HAVE CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA AND HAVE BEEN DENIED ANY REMEDY, NOR ALLOWED TO TALK TO A SUPERVISOR.

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THREE YEARS AGO, WE STARTED TO NOTICE A FUEL SMELL WHEN DRIVING OUR 2003 SUBARU FORESTER ON VERY COLD DAYS (BELOW 20 DEGREES). WE TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALER FOR SERVICE. THEY COULDN'T FIND A SPECIFIC LEAK, BUT THEY TIGHTENED THE CLAMPS AROUND THE FUEL LINES. WE CONTINUED TO NOTICE THE SMELL AND TOOK THE CAR TO OTHER SERVICE CENTERS TO SEE IF ANOTHER MECHANIC COULD FIND THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR. WE RECENTLY TOOK THE DARK BACK TO THE SUBARU DEALER AND WERE INFORMED THAT THE FUEL LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $700. WE DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND MANY SUBARU OWNERS COMPLAINING OF SIMILAR ISSUES ON FORESTER AND OTHER SUBARU MODELS MANUFACTURED IN THE EARLY 2000S. OTHER OWNERS REPORTED THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT WITH THE CAR. GIVEN THE SAFETY RISK OF LEAKING FUEL, WE URGE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE. *TR

I really like this car!

This is the best AWD ever! It has the best handling for freeway cruising and light duty off-roading. I put 200 miles on the car within one weekend day and so far, I have no complaints. The climate control is amazing and keeps the temperature at the set level. I absolutely love this car and even my wife, who previously said that the Forester 'is not fish, nor fowl', is now asking to drive it.

You'll love the great size of this vehicle, along with its excellent interior design and appointments. The standard sound system is very good, and the folding seats are easy to operate. Plus, there's plenty of passenger and drive head and leg room. With a good fuel economy average of 23 MPH, you'll be able to go further for less. And let's not forget the nice ride and handling!

My kids enjoy it as much as I do. The two boys have the knack of closing the door with just enough force to get that solid German door sound (they are 3 and 4 years old). The interior design is appealing and comfortable, the engine growls nicely, and the sound system is nice and clear. It handles nimbly at reasonable speeds and has more than sufficient power for a 4-cylinder. After 2,000 miles, I still walk around my Forester the 'long way' and drool.

This is our second Forrester. We previously owned a 99' L and recently traded in our gas-guzzling Jeep Liberty for the 2003 XS Premium. We are pleased with the nice improvements and the same great reliable practical mountain car. It has good power with AWD and great gas mileage.

I'm having trouble understanding why this car is receiving such rave reviews. The interior is cramped and uncomfortable, and the controls are too small and difficult to operate. The cruise control, in particular, requires you to take your eyes off the road for an excessive period of time to turn it on. Additionally, the air conditioning and defrosting systems are inadequate, and the engine has an annoying loud metallic tapping sound for the first ten minutes after starting. The automatic transmission also has poor acceleration, and the check engine light comes on frequently. Lastly, the armrest is uncomfortable, and the cup holders block the instrumentation.

Despite its good handling and gas mileage, the car had several drawbacks such as noise on the highway, expensive maintenance, and difficulty fitting car seats. However, I ultimately decided to replace it with a Honda Odyssey.
