2019 Subaru Ascent problems
The Subaru Ascent is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by Subaru. In some markets, it is sold as the Subaru Evoltis. It is the largest automobile Subaru manufactures. The seven or eight-seat passenger SUV, with the design based on the VIZIV-7 concept, made its debut at the LA Auto Show on November 28, 2017. The Ascent became available in the third quarter of 2018. Like its American-built predecessor, the Tribeca, the Ascent is not available in Japan.
History
The Ascent was originally introduced as a concept car at the 2017 New York International Auto Show in April, where it was also announced that Subaru would be producing the vehicle at its Lafayette, Indiana Subaru of Indiana Assembly Plant. Production began in late 2017 alongside the current Subaru Impreza. It was to be the flagship Subaru vehicle in North America, and replace the Subaru Tribeca (previously the B9 Tribeca), which was discontinued after the 2014 model year. Subaru Japan had their own three-row crossover called the Subaru Exiga that was available from 2008 until its discontinuation in 2018. In terms of exterior design, it was akin to a 3-row Outback as is the Ascent to the Forester.
The first spy photographs of Subaru Ascent development mules surfaced in late summer 2016. Although the Ascent was spotted testing in 2017 with an expected mid-2017 on-market date, the sale date was pushed back to early summer 2018.
Subaru initially announced the Ascent would be sold in the Philippines as the Evoltis starting from 2020. Its release was delayed numerous times owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and eventually was introduced in the Philippines in May 2021. Only the Touring model is available. The Evoltis name is also used in Israel and several South American markets. Although some sources reported the Evoltis name would be used for the first battery electric vehicle sold by Subaru, that vehicle, which was co-developed with Toyota, was announced in September 2021 as the Subaru Solterra instead.

Common 2019 Subaru Ascent problems
The 2019 Subaru Ascent, being the first model year, faced first model year reliability issues, which are common in many vehicle lineups. The 2019 Ascent has 398 NHTSA complaints and six recalls, making it the worst model year of the Ascent according to CarComplaints.com.
One of the most severe reliability issues with the 2019 Ascent is a glitch that drains the battery while the tailgate is open. Owner reports indicate that this problem occurs when the tailgate is open for an extended period, causing the battery to drain completely. This issue can be inconvenient and potentially leave the driver stranded with a dead battery.
Another problem that affects the 2019 Subaru Ascent is premature battery drain. Several owners have reported that their vehicle's battery died within the first week of ownership. Even after replacement, the battery would require a jump start, indicating a more significant issue with the vehicle's electrical system. This problem has led to a class-action lawsuit against Subaru, alleging that the company knowingly installed batteries with insufficient capacity to power the SUV's electrical system.
The 2019 Subaru Ascent also has a problem with transmission failures. Owners report that the transmission starts making excessive noise and slipping while accelerating at around 50,000 miles. The only way to fix the issue is by replacing the entire transmission, which costs over $3,500. This problem is more widespread than in some other midsize SUVs on the market, leading to more expensive repair costs as the Ascent ages.
The stereo system freezing is another problem found on some 2019 Ascent models, usually within the first 2,500 miles. There are some software updates available for the touchscreen, which improves its reliability. However, some dealerships charge around $50 for labor to install these updates.
Dead batteries have also been mentioned by some Ascent owners at around 3,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the SUV, and some of them get stuck on, draining the battery after the engine is off. Diagnosing the source of the battery drain costs around $100, while fixing it can range from $20 to $300. One of the most common sources of the problem is the rear hatch motor.
The 2019 Subaru Ascent has eight recalls, which is worse than most other SUVs on the market. The most serious recall covers improperly fastened ground bolts, which may cause a fire even while parked. Subaru will replace ground bolts and wires on affected models for free.
In summary, the 2019 Subaru Ascent has several common problems, including transmission failures, stereo system freezing, dead batteries, and recalls related to transmission issues, a defective PCV valve, driveshaft bolts, and possible missing spot welds on the B-pillar. These problems have led to the 2019 Subaru Ascent being included in the 10 least reliable cars list by Consumer Reports.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-01
- VIN: 4S4WMAMD1K3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: We observed Subaru Ascent 2019 (Limited) car handling poorly over bumpy areas, especially over bumps on turns even at speeds under 40 mph. Car feels as if it is loosing contact with the road. It is also jarring over bumps even while driving straight. In wet conditions, I do not know if I will be able to stop within the proper distance. We took the car to the dealer, that indicated front struts needed replacement. They could not provide an estimate of when struts would be available -- this was over one month ago. I am uncertain if a repair is possible to correct this apparent safety issue.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-15
- VIN: 4S4WMARD1K3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: My Ascent is primarily driven in the city of San Francisco, a fairly hilly city. We have had issues with the suspension on this vehicle in the past, and I will need to install my third pair of struts in the coming weeks (the parts are currently on backorder). The CVT has also been replaced on the vehicle. The tires are routinely rotated, and we keep up with the maintenance schedule. We were driving home after dropping our daughters at school and while accelerating up a hill heard a crack. We immediately pulled over, and saw that the lower control arm had sheared.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 4S4WMAPD8K3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The CVT experienced a catastrophic failure, later identified as "the chain" by a Subaru dealer mechanic. The night before the incident, the transmission "slipped" and made a metallic clunking noise when merging onto a highway. On the day of the incident, the transmission failed completely after turning onto a roadway from a stop sign. No forward or reverse power was available. Had the transmission failed the night before while merging onto a highway, with little ability to pull out of the roadway, we certainly would have been in danger. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer and the transmission failure confirmed. The transmission "stuttered" for several months previously while accelerating, though not consistently.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-06
- VIN: 4S4WMAFD9K3
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: During an inspection at the dealership in December 2023, the tech found the oil pan to be leaking. It was resealed during the same visit. Approximately 8 months later, the same problem was found again at the dealership. It was again resealed. Upon further research, this appears to be a recurring problem on similar vehicles.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: 4S4WMABD3K3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Subaru Ascent. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped and attempting to accelerate on several occasions, the vehicle jolted forward while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the computer software needed to be updated. The software updated but the failure reoccurred after almost two months. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that another software needed to be updated; however, the failure reoccurred after almost two months. The contact believed that the failure was associated with Manufacturer Recall Number: 16-139-22 CVT Assembly (WRK-21) Warranty Extension (TCM reprogramming to prevent CVT chain slip). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
- VIN: 4S4WMAJD9K3
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Purchase the car two weeks ago the first night on the way home it was acting up just like it did when I test drove it and was told by the BMW dealership Aristocrat Motors in Topeka Kansas that they would fix anything that was wrong with it. On the way home I realized I didn't think it would make it back the 60 miles so I took it to Olathe Subaru they informed me that it had had transmission problems reported by the previous owners but their technician couldn't get it to do it again so the people just traded it in instead and then I got the car without them getting the transmission fixed or whatever was wrong. They are actually waiting on Subaru of America to respond to tell them what needs to be done to the car and in the process I have been two weeks with little information of what's going on. I feel the recall should have been done and the car is still a good car it just needs to be repaired correctly. Thank you for your response I look forward to hearing from you please help.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-18
- VIN: 4S4WMARD5K3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving on a road with a lot of hills our car sudden lost all engine power but all of the lights and engine were still on. We pulled over but kept the car on and it seem to resume power. Then about 1/8 of a mile later it happened again. We shut the car off completely for 5 minutes and turned it back on and we were able to drive it normally for another mile. It then happened three more times on our way to a safe spot to pull over. The fifth time it happened all warning lights on the dashboard turned on (see picture). The speed in which it happened varied. It is important to note that we brought it in for service on 8/8 for a standard interval service at a Subaru dealership and have brought our car in multiple times to address issues with the transmission.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: 4S4WMAPD1K3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: There is a knocking or clunking noise at low speeds during and after turning in the front driver's side of the vehicle. Car has 17,500 miles on it. Assembled inspection suggests that tie rod (inner and outer), ball joint, stabilizer links are all intact and functioning properly. No loose components or fasteners. All bushings appear firm and intact. There is an apparent [XXX] ), though seemingly unreported issue with the front-end suspension system that dealerships and service techs can't seem to diagnose. At best, noises go away for a period of time then return. If it's an issue with a wear component then it may be that the OEM parts are deficient for use on this vehicle. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-04
- VIN: 4S4WMARD6K3
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The two map lights and the part referred to as the front overhead console has a defective design which at the least stops the lights from working properly, but at the worst, can start a fire. Subaru must be aware of the problem because it routinely change them. My vehicle listed above was ready for the installation of the third console when I said to myself, this one is not under warranty so let me call Subaru. They agreed to cover part of the cost- now we are sure that Subaru knows there is a fire hazard, didn’t report it, do a voluntary recall, or notify you. Am I eligible for money for whistleblowing? So I have pictures of the melted condition, and the repair. I also made a video of the repair. You can search re-engineering Subaru ascent map light console if you want to see it. I figured the cause, developed a solution, and re-engineered it. I can, most can’t. I definitely shouldn’t have to get out a solder gun and repair the electrical components because they are defective. The problem is the design. The direction you push the light cover switch pushes the socket away from its contact. This creates a gap that causes heat that both melts the plastic, and also cracking and melting around the plate of metal that makes contact with the socket. I just soldered them together and have a light that works perfect, but i do have degraded cracked plastic around the socket, so I condenser it perhaps temporary, but better than hearing the light sizzle while arcing. Plus the lights work every time. You can search Subaru ascent maplight and will find a bunch of people asking about the problem. For some it just stops working which is the best thing. For others you get sizzleing and a dim light. The resulting arcing also causes the light to turn off improperly and results in sizzling also. That’s should not be able to happen. Off is off. Let’s get this taken care of. We dont want injuries, or accident s because the light started smoking and distracted someone.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-14
- VIN: 4S4WMARD6K3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The front suspension is making a clanking noise. Inspection of the front strut towers tops shows an interior separation of the rubber in the Strut bearing at 63k miles. There is also a noticeable difference between the left and right side relative to the components present. The space at the drivers side which is making the noise has a bigger separation in its components when the wheels are in a straight ahead position. The failure of this component can cause a catastrophic accident.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 4S4WMAHD6K3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Over the course of 5 years, a lot has been mechanically wrong with our vehicle. Each service appointment yielded a 'cannot duplicate' response. Recently, my car has been in the service department a few times. My car had recall work performed on a ground bolt, and my husband advised them that the car had a 'rich fuel' smell when starting with the hood open. I've complained since 2021 of a smell when pulling up the mountain. The smell is what I described as a perm solution smell. Each time, the response was 'cannot duplicate.' In February, I took the car in to have the exhaust inspected because it was getting louder each passing day. I was advised that the entire exhaust needed to be replaced, and I would be responsible for costs. I brought my car home, unrepaired, and called Subaru of America to file a claim through them. I had repeatedly expressed concerns, and nothing was done, yet I'm expected to foot the bill now. Since February 12th, I have been back and forth with Subaru and just made the appointment to get the exhaust work completed, with a small contribution from Subaru. However, this past Saturday, [XXX] my vehicle caught on fire while driving. I am fine, but my vehicle has now been deemed a total loss. As I was descending the mountain, I smelled the same 'perm solution' smell, and shortly after, there was smoke coming from under the hood. The smoke entered the cabin as I pulled off the road. Upon exiting the vehicle, flames and smoke were visible from the hood. I grabbed my purse and ran, called 911, and watched my vehicle engulfed in flames. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-13
- VIN: 4S4WMAPD1K3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Vehicle has completed all transmission recalls. Until recently, Subaru continued to say that the issues I was experience with loss of power or glitchy shifting could not be duplicated. After the vehicle exceeded it's warranty coverage, they were suddenly able to duplicate the problem and say that the CVT was causing my problems, that reprogramming failed and that the vehicle needs a new transmission. These issues have persisted before and after the recalls related to the CVT and have cause two near accidents as I pulled out into traffic only to have the car not shift/accelerate as expected. I no longer allow my teenagers to drive the vehicle due to this safety concern. I firmly believe the prior recalls were not effective in resolving the issues with the CVT and/or that Subaru said no damage to the chain was visible and checked the recall as done without actually doing anything more than reprogramming. I believe the issues should be looked into further and coverage for the CVT should be extended beyond the initial reprogramming provided by the recall.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-04
- VIN: 4S4WMARD9K3
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Subaru Ascent. The contact stated that while driving at 35MPH, the struts were impacted hard which caused the vehicle to shake the dashboard. No warning lights as illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they could not diagnose the failure and would not take apart the vehicle to inspect the strut. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but refused to let the dealer work on the vehicle but offered to give 6,000 dollars on the new vehicle because the vehicle was nonrepairable. The failure mileage was approximately 39,634.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-10
- VIN: 4S4WMAFD1K3

Overall, we really enjoyed this SUV. However, we did experience some difficulty when my wife got into a small accident and we had to wait for 2 months for the collision shop to receive the necessary parts. It seems that everything is on back log and Subaru may not have planned well for providing spare parts. Despite this, we still think that buying a brand new model was a good decision.

I really like the vehicle! It looks smart, is comfortable, handles well, and is not too large. I find the cream-colored area on the dash and doors to be an interesting touch. However, I am disappointed that I cannot get a navigation system without also ordering the moon roof package. I do not want a moon roof, and even though the brochure says the navigation system is optional, it is not available without the moon roof. I am concerned about how much I will be able to see through the moon roof if I use a cargo carrier or carry a kayak, and I am also worried that it might upset my dogs. For me, the moon roof is completely useless. Unfortunately, if I want the navigation system, I am forced to take it. I might have to buy a Garmin and save thousands if I get this vehicle without the navigation system and moon roof.

I've had the car for 24 months now and it has about 30,000 miles on the odometer. While I do like the all-wheel drive, I have noticed some issues with the drive train. The car is missing a six-cylinder engine and there is considerable turbo lag. Additionally, the transmission slips, creating a jerking startup in cold weather. The dealer has been unable to replicate the problem or has said that it's normal. I have also noticed white smoke on startup, indicating that the turbo seals are failing. Despite these issues, I appreciate the all-wheel drive and it has reinforced my desire for it in my next car. Once the current lack of vehicle supply improves, I will be shopping for a new car, but it will not be a Subaru.

The new Ascent is reminding me of our 2006 Land Cruiser in so many ways. The ride is outstanding on 20” wheels and the mpg is averaging 24 thus far. I love the little details like passenger window screens and even a windscreen on the sunroof. It's the little things that make Subaru a Subaru (pardon the cliche), but it's true. Although there may be some things that need tweaking as we explore all this SUV has to offer, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. For instance, with 19 cup holders, you'd think there would be one to fit my coffee mug or my 64 oz water bottle, but nope. I just spent 7 bucks on a 32 oz. bottle and now I'm gonna need to carry a cooler to hold the difference. I'm taking the Ascent on its first road trip this weekend and another in two weeks. I'll let you know more later. And now, here's later. After two trips and 2500 miles in the rearview, I've discovered an annoying glare in the rearview mirrors on sunny days. It's a diagonal line, reflecting off the chrome trim on the AC vents. I'm guessing Subaru needs to tone down the silver or eliminate it altogether. I'm thinking of black tape, but that's tacky. Eyesight works great, and the MPG is spot on. We cruised 400 miles on a tank at 80 mph, and backroads driving averaged 28 mpg. We live on a mountain with an elevation of around 2700, and manually downshifting helps tremendously on the brakes. However, the Ascent shifts continuously on the climb, so we're going to need to work on shifting uphill. We're still waiting on an Apple upgrade to make Waze work on CarPlay. It continually cuts off music, and I have to reset it. The map system is antiquated and needs to be updated to Google Maps and/or Waze. I love Waze. I noticed that after driving a long distance nonstop, when I fill up, there's a hesitation initially when I start off. I almost think it's a vacuum sealing the tank. It stops almost immediately, so that's my take unless the dealer says otherwise. So there you have it. None of these aforementioned items are deal breakers.Just some observations I've discovered on my rides. By the way, if you happen to live within 250 miles of my voice, I highly recommend buying from Earl Duff Subaru in Harriman, Tenn. They are a small town dealer that offers a personalized experience. The average salesman has been there for 15 to 20 years, and I'm guessing there are only 4 of them. That being said, make sure to see Brandon or any of the other staff members. I promise you won't be disappointed!

After owning the car for six months and driving close to 3,000 miles, I can say that I am happy with the Ascent. It's a spacious and comfortable car that rides great on the highway. It's packed with technology and, most importantly, has an abundance of safety applications. However, there are a couple of downsides. The biggest complaint I have is its CVT transmission. It's not smooth at low speeds, below 35 mph or so (and most of my drive is in the city at 20-30 mph). The ride is jerky, and what bothers me the most is the upshifting: you start from stop, and it immediately upshifts to 2nd or 3rd, and you suddenly lose all power (unless you really step on the accelerator). Looks like it's programmed to keep the RPM at around 1,500 to be optimal, which is not always the best option in city driving. One thing I'm using is the paddle shifter, it actually works even when you're in the Drive mode for a quick shift. Often I opt to use the Manual mode and I have much more control over its power and shifting. But for some reason, it seems that the noise coming from the engine/transmission is louder than in D mode, even at the same RPMs. I think that Subaru had to tweak the CVT to match the engine power and the size of the car, but looks like they didn't finish the job completely. I had a Forester with a CVT transmission, and it was super smooth all the time. The other thing is the fuel consumption. In city driving, I barely get to 15 mpg, even though it's rated at 21. It performs much better on the highway, and that's where this car really shines. It's very smooth at higher speeds, no transmission problems, and the ride is comfortable. The only thing is the noise at high speeds, but I still don't think this to be a problem. Even though you can customize a lot of settings, I could never make the setting that unlocks all doors with just one press of the button work. It's not a big deal, but for a $40k car, you would expect everything to work perfectly.Overall, I would give the Ascent a rating of 7.5 out of 10.

Our 2019 Subaru Ascent failed to start twice within the first month of purchase, requiring us to have it towed to the dealership, even before the first oil change. We are confident that the dealership will address the issue and ensure that our vehicle runs smoothly from now on.

I purchased a brand new Subaru Ascent in January after reading great reviews and test driving it. Despite being my first Subaru, I took a chance on it due to the positive feedback. Unfortunately, after only 7 months, I experienced an electrical malfunction that was triggered by my insurance sensor. This resulted in my car sputtering and squeaking, and I had to take it to the shop where they informed me that the transmission needed to be replaced. As a result, I had to take time off work for repairs on my new car, which was extremely frustrating. I updated my review to reflect the issues I had with my 2019 Ascent, including the transmission, electrical issues, and fuel pump replacement, all before reaching 40k miles. However, after speaking with Subaru, they made it right by transferring me into a 2020 Ascent for a good deal and assured me that all the issues were fixed. Unfortunately, I experienced the same problem with the transmission skipping, and it had to be replaced again. I also had to replace the window seal on the driver's side and the covering to my fog light. Despite my disappointment with the quality of the Ascent, I appreciate Subaru's efforts to make things right. However, I would advise against purchasing a Subaru Ascent due to the issues I have experienced. As someone who prioritizes safety ratings, I was disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing a Subaru again.I am confident in stating that my experience with Subaru has been less than satisfactory. Despite being swapped into a 2020 Subaru Ascent, I have encountered numerous issues with the vehicle. These include a malfunctioning window, transmission issues, and multiple recalls that required several trips to the shop. All of these problems occurred within 70k miles. As a result, I have decided to never purchase a Subaru again.

The review and ratings provided by Edmunds in numerous categories are very accurate. It is highly recommended to read them carefully before making a purchase. However, there are some issues with the CVT which can shift hard, hesitate, and whine. Additionally, the cabin noise from road bumps can be quite loud. If possible, it is suggested to take the car on a bumpy patched road during a test drive. It is worth noting that the front console cup holders are limited in size, despite Subaru's claim of having 19 cup holders. The front seat may also be uncomfortable, so it is important to thoroughly test it. If you frequently engage in outdoor activities that require leaving a door or the rare hatch open, this car may not be the best option due to numerous reports of battery drain when the hatch is left open. This is because the computer system remains on with no way of shutting it off. However, the car does have great technology, ample room, and some other nice features. It is recommended to thoroughly test the car before making a purchase.

I bought my 2019 Ascent in March and recently took it in for its first oil change. I mentioned the brakes were squeaking and was informed that this was a known issue with Ascents. Unfortunately, it took two months to get the special grease needed to fix the problem. Although it wasn't Subaru's grease, the dealership was willing to give it a try since they had so many customers waiting for a solution. I also mentioned that the transmission was stuttering, but after two days in the shop, I was told that nothing was wrong. However, three days later, every light on the dashboard lit up, including the check engine, oil temp, eye sight, and brakes. I was advised to drive it to the dealership, but once there, I was told that I probably shouldn't have driven it in. The diagnostic revealed that it was the transmission, and unfortunately, the part was on backorder again. My car was in the shop for almost two weeks. During this time, the dealership also discovered a leak in my air conditioner, which was another issue they had seen in Ascents. Unfortunately, the part for that was also on backorder. When I finally got my car back, the air conditioner was worse than before. I was so disappointed because I had fallen in love with this beautiful car at first sight. Now, I'm heartbroken over this experience. I never imagined this would happen. I contacted Subaru, but it took them 10 days to respond to the dealership's notification about the problems. They tried to convince me that this is still a good vehicle, but I'm not convinced. I regret not going back to either the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander, as I drove both of those cars for over 150,000 miles without any issues. Looks can be deceiving, so don't make the same mistake.

I really wanted to love this car. It has great comfort and some impressive features. However, safety should always be the top priority when it comes to driving a car. Unfortunately, my experience with this car has not been great. I have been without it for three weeks now, as it needed a new transmission. The car is only 9 months old and has 10,000 miles on it, as it was leased brand new off the lot. To make matters worse, it seems that many other Ascents are having the same issue, causing a backlog in transmission replacements. When I brought my car in, there were 7 other Ascents at the dealership awaiting the same repair. As a family car, safety is paramount, and it's disappointing that this car has let me down in that regard. However, I am grateful that I am only leasing it and can return it. I will be looking elsewhere for a car that can provide the safety and reliability that my family needs.
