The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-06-07
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: SMELL OF GASOLINE. FOUND A STREAM OF GASOLINE SQUIRTING FROM A CRACK IN THE GAS TANK ON TO THE EXHAUST PIPE HEAT BARRIER. UPON EXAMINATION OF TANK FOUND A DEFECT IN THE GAS TANK MANUFACTURING PROCESS. IT LOOKED LIKE DURING THE STAMPING OF THE SHEET METAL, A PORTION OF THE METAL FOLDED OVER CAUSING A WEAKEN AREA OF ABOUT 1 INCH WHERE THE METAL IS BENT OVER ON ITSELF. I REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE GAS TANK WITH A NEW ONE PURCHASED FROM TOYOTA AND IT LASTED ABOUT 18 MONTHS BEFORE IT EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE IS A PROBLEM SEEING THIS DEFECT IN THE NEW TANK BECAUSE OF THE UNDERCOATING APPLIED.I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A HAZARDOUS DEFECT BECAUSE THE LEAK OCCURS JUST ABOVE THE THE EXHAUST PIPE RADIANT HEAT SHEILD.

THANK GOD I HAD FORGOT MY MILITARY ID AND HAD TO RETURN TO MY VEHICLE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY VEHICLE THERE WERE FLAMES SHOOTING UP FROM INSIDE MY VEHICLE. I QUICKLY RAN BACK TO MY OFFICE AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF SEVERAL OTHER CO WORKERS, WE EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE USING FIRE EXTINGUISHERS. AFTER CLOSER EXAMINATION OF THE FIRES LOCATION, I CAN CLEARLY SEE THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE SAME AREA OF THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER, BEHIND THE CONSOLE.

ACTUALLY, I DO NOT EVEN KNOW IF THEY HAVE EVER ALL WORKED FOR MORE THAN MINUTES! SOMETIMES THEY START WORKING AGAIN BY THEMSELVES. I HAVE GIVEN UP TRYING TO KEEP ALL FOUR LIGHT BULBS FUNCTIONING. MANY OTHER COROLLAS OF THE SAME YEAR HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IN FACT, SINCE I HAVE BEEN DRIVING THE CAR (MY WIFE BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW (CECILIA KIPP - HER NAME AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE) AND DROVE IT UNTIL THE PAST YEAR), I HAVE YET TO SEE A COROLLA THAT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED (LOOKS THE SAME) THAT HAS THE REAR LIGHTS WORKING. THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM THAT NO ONE WANTS TO ADDRESS.*AK

Negative 1995 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Emiliano Schoen 2024-11-01

As a proud owner of five Toyota Corollas, I can confidently say that the 1995 model I purchased from my mother-in-law in 2001 has been a reliable vehicle. Although my previous Corollas were manual, I have been satisfied with the automatic transmission. Recently, I had to have a transmission job done due to leaking seals, which my mechanic informed me is a common issue with this year and model. Despite this setback, I believe that Toyota should have taken responsibility for this issue and recalled these vehicles for repairs. Additionally, I have noticed some engine noise during acceleration, which is a bit frustrating. Overall, I remain confident in the quality of Toyota vehicles and their ability to provide a smooth driving experience.

  2. Bertram Labadie 2024-09-25

Hey there! I used to have this car and I noticed that its performance wasn't the best. It didn't have much road grip and I found it to be more suitable for rough use. I wouldn't recommend driving it at high speeds on the highway, as it doesn't handle well. However, I must say that the build quality was excellent!

Your car sounds like a real gem! It's amazing that it's been running so well for so long with only oil changes. It's great to hear that it's been so reliable and has never let you down. The fact that it still has the original exhaust system is a testament to its quality. It may not be the most exciting car out there, but it sounds like the perfect choice for everyday use. With only 8400km, it's clear that you've taken great care of it. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my thoughts on my Toyota Corolla. Even though I paid a bit more for it, I absolutely love it! It gets great gas mileage and drives so smoothly on the roads.

I bought this car as my first car, without a cosigner or anyone helping me. I did it all by myself, and my parents, who can be a bit analytical, were impressed with my choice. They love the car I bought. It's an awesome car!

  3. Monte Berge 2024-10-19

I used this car as a teenager before I got my truck (thank goodness I finally look like a man) and it was a great car to learn to drive in. It's reliable for the most part, but we've had a few issues with the power steering pump, alternator, and starter. However, it's been quite dependable overall. The only thing to keep in mind is that it's not a high-speed car. I drove it on the interstate and was hesitant to go over 70 because the engine was working as hard as it could.

This has been a great, very reliable car to own and drive. On the highway, I average 33 MPG, and in the city, about 28. You can easily get it up to 90 MPH without any issues.

I always talk about my little Corolla (aka Corona the Corolla) with pride. She has always run great and I never had to spend much on maintenance, just fluid changes and basic tune-ups, which wasn't until recently. Unfortunately, my little Corolla was severely hit a couple of weeks ago and I may have to say goodbye to her. It's so sad. But she did well and we're all very proud of her.
