Subaru Ascent problems

The Subaru Ascent is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by Subaru. In some markets, it is sold as the Subaru Evoltis. It is the largest automobile Subaru manufactures. The seven or eight-seat passenger SUV, with the design based on the VIZIV-7 concept, made its debut at the LA Auto Show on November 28, 2017. The Ascent became available in the third quarter of 2018. Like its American-built predecessor, the Tribeca, the Ascent is not available in Japan.
History
The Ascent was originally introduced as a concept car at the 2017 New York International Auto Show in April, where it was also announced that Subaru would be producing the vehicle at its Lafayette, Indiana Subaru of Indiana Assembly Plant. Production began in late 2017 alongside the current Subaru Impreza. It was to be the flagship Subaru vehicle in North America, and replace the Subaru Tribeca (previously the B9 Tribeca), which was discontinued after the 2014 model year. Subaru Japan had their own three-row crossover called the Subaru Exiga that was available from 2008 until its discontinuation in 2018. In terms of exterior design, it was akin to a 3-row Outback as is the Ascent to the Forester.
The first spy photographs of Subaru Ascent development mules surfaced in late summer 2016. Although the Ascent was spotted testing in 2017 with an expected mid-2017 on-market date, the sale date was pushed back to early summer 2018.
Subaru initially announced the Ascent would be sold in the Philippines as the Evoltis starting from 2020. Its release was delayed numerous times owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and eventually was introduced in the Philippines in May 2021. Only the Touring model is available. The Evoltis name is also used in Israel and several South American markets. Although some sources reported the Evoltis name would be used for the first battery electric vehicle sold by Subaru, that vehicle, which was co-developed with Toyota, was announced in September 2021 as the Subaru Solterra instead.

Subaru Ascent 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-21
- VIN: 4S4WMAMD1K3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: We observed Subaru Ascent 2019 (Limited) car handling poorly over bumpy areas, especially over bumps on turns even at speeds under 40 mph. Car feels as if it is loosing contact with the road. It is also jarring over bumps even while driving straight. In wet conditions, I do not know if I will be able to stop within the proper distance. We took the car to the dealer, that indicated front struts needed replacement. They could not provide an estimate of when struts would be available -- this was over one month ago. I am uncertain if a repair is possible to correct this apparent safety issue.
Subaru Ascent 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-18
- VIN: 4S4WMARD1K3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: My Ascent is primarily driven in the city of San Francisco, a fairly hilly city. We have had issues with the suspension on this vehicle in the past, and I will need to install my third pair of struts in the coming weeks (the parts are currently on backorder). The CVT has also been replaced on the vehicle. The tires are routinely rotated, and we keep up with the maintenance schedule. We were driving home after dropping our daughters at school and while accelerating up a hill heard a crack. We immediately pulled over, and saw that the lower control arm had sheared.
Subaru Ascent 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
- VIN: 4S4WMAPD8K3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The CVT experienced a catastrophic failure, later identified as "the chain" by a Subaru dealer mechanic. The night before the incident, the transmission "slipped" and made a metallic clunking noise when merging onto a highway. On the day of the incident, the transmission failed completely after turning onto a roadway from a stop sign. No forward or reverse power was available. Had the transmission failed the night before while merging onto a highway, with little ability to pull out of the roadway, we certainly would have been in danger. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer and the transmission failure confirmed. The transmission "stuttered" for several months previously while accelerating, though not consistently.
Subaru Ascent 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-22
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15

The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V955000 (Power Train). The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

- Summary: Transmission needed a full replacement
Subaru Ascent 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-30
- VIN: 4S4WMAPD8N3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: At approximately 10000 miles the drive train (transmission) developed a shuddering while driving. This occurs at any speed but more frequently at 45-60 MPH. The frequency of this problem has increased with the vehicle which now has 45202 miles. It is now occurring periodically at acceleration from a complete stop. The problem has been reported to the dealer at every service. It was evaluated by the service department for a 4-day period in which they could not duplicate the problem. However, they only drove the vehicle 20.2 miles during this evaluation. It is unknown if this may lead to a safety issue, but it produces a very uncomfortable driving experience and distraction while driving. There is no warning lamp associated with this problem at this time.
Subaru Ascent 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 4S4WMAMD7M3

- Summary: Brakes shudder and fade when slowing down from highway speeds. Subaru has issued many "fixes" but it keeps happening. See most recent "Ascent Front Brake Warranty Extension Coverage" it still has not fixed the problem!
Subaru Ascent 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-16
- VIN: 4S4WMARD0L3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Bolt holding the driveshaft support bracket backed out causing driveshaft to come out. This is a known issue with the 2019 and 2022 Subaru Ascents and have active service advisories but Subaru of America does not recognize it for the 2020 models even know it is also happening in the 2020 vehicles. If the driveshaft would have came out at a high speed it could have caused a crash. Based on the research the bolts do not hold the torque from the factory due to a bolt manufacturing issue and slowly back out after time unknown to the driver. Subaru is not recognizing the problem, so they are not notifying the 2020 owners of the problem, instead they are offering a 50% payment on the repairs as a goodwill payment to offset the cost since it is not a warranty issue. I had had my car in for oil changes in the past and the dealership did not know to check for the tightness of the bolts as there were no service advisories. There should be a recall for this problem before someone dies in a crash caused by this problem.
Subaru Ascent 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-15
- VIN: 4S4WMAPD4L3

- Summary: Driver side window malfunctions intermittently. When raining, slow to go down or up, also skips as it goes up and down.
Subaru Ascent 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-15
- VIN: 4S4WMAWD5P3
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: 2023 Subaru Ascent Touring. Front windshield easily cracked from minor rock strikes 3 times within 20 months. Replacement with Subarus OEM glasses twice already within 3 months. Now a new crack needs repair or potential replacement. Defective windshield that cannot withhold minor impact is clearly serious safety concern, increased stress on owner and burden on insurance, and impact to vehicle structural integrity for repeated replacements, and depreciation of vehicle value.
Subaru Ascent 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 4S4WMARD9L3
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Component- steering locks Safety risk - vehicle cannot be started. Therefore if in an area of risk - cannot start vehicle. This randomly happens pulling into parking spaces. It is repetitive. I’m older and alone, scary when it happens as you are stranded. And call to Subaru roadside only option was to tow the vehicle the vehicle to dealership. Online fix is to man handle the steering wheel and turn it in the direction of the tension. Pulling into a normal parking space should not create the tension necessary for the steering wheel to lock. I have been on Subaru ascent form us and this seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. Mine has been inspected for the last occurrence and was told battery issue. The other times there were no battery issues and dealerships cannot find issues. Warning light only lights up after steering wheel locks up and vehicle cannot be started. The safety risk for me is being stranded - and no way to prevent it or know when it might happen.

- Summary: Unusual wear on tires - 7/32 at 8000 miles, 5/32 at 15000 miles, advised to replace all tires at 15000 miles. Existing recall WRH-23 covering vehicles manufactured between Dec 2022 and Jan 2023. My vehicle shows manufacturing date of March 2023 but I believe may be part of the same issue. See below Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is initiating a new safety recall and stop sale for certain 2023 model year Ascent vehicles equipped with 20-inch wheels. Description of the Defect and Safety Risk The vehicles included in this recall/stop sale may be equipped with tires that were damaged during the wheel mounting and assembly process. A misaligned bead guide arm on the tire mounting equipment may have caused excessive stress on the tire bead during mounting, possibly causing damage to the internal structure of the tire. Internal damage to the tire bead may lead to structural failure of the tire and rapid tire deflation, increasing the risk of a crash. Remedy For all potentially affected vehicles, Subaru retailers will remove and replace all four tires with new ones at no cost to the customer. All removed tires should be rendered unusable and be disposed of according to local regulations. Affected Vehicles A total of 4,409 U.S. Subaru Ascent vehicles will be affected by this recall, as listed below: 2023 Ascent (w/20” wheels) December 1, 2022 – January 5, 2023 Not all vehicles in the production date range listed above are affected by this recall. Vehicle year: 2023
My review will focus on how my impressions differ from the 'expert' review at Edmund. First, in terms of size, the Ascent is shorter than most 3-row cars, but it utilizes the space well. It is just the right size for a family of four, but I have carried two full-size adults, one of whom is over 6ft tall, in the third row across town with no complaints. A car that is bigger than the Ascent will be more difficult to park and drive in tight corners. On paper, Ascent's second-row passenger room may be smaller than that in the Highlander. Is that why Edmund thinks the second row is small in the Ascent? In reality, the Ascent's second row is roomy and spacious, even for people over 6ft, and the seats are very comfortable. In terms of ride comfort, the Ascent's ride is almost luxury car-like, comfortable, and quiet. Most reviews I read are consistent with that. The gas pedal on a turbo-charged car can be 'touchy,' but you should be able to quickly learn to adapt. By reading driving experience from people owning earlier and the 23 models, the throttle responses seem to have improved with the latest model. Once you get used to it, together with a tight turning circle and assist from the AWD system, you would find it fun to drive with lots of power passing on the highway with a full load. While most SUVs offer AWD as an option for at least $2,000, AWD is standard on the Ascent, and Subaru has the best AWD for a mainstream car. I am tired of hearing about the Telluride. The reviews should take into consideration the markups they are charging, plus the added cost of the AWD, before comparing it to the Ascent.

Vehicle year: 2023
I'm so glad you found the Subaru Ascent Touring! It sounds like it really exceeded your expectations, especially compared to other Subaru models. The leather interior sounds both comfortable and durable, and the accent trims of wood grain and two-tone leather really add a nice touch. It's great to hear that the leg room in the front and second rows is enough for your 6'1The heated steering wheel was a lifesaver during my recent skiing trip. After being frozen, my cold hands were grateful for the smooth, warm leather. The Infotainment system in the Ascent is simple and functional, and Android Auto is awesome! Unlike other SUVs such as the MDX, Pathfinder, CX9, and Highlander, the controls in the Ascent are easy to locate and use. You can change the temperature, radio station, or enter an address with ease while driving. The main screen is used for navigation, while a small info display screen above the dash shows temperature, directions, or radio stations. The cup holders could be larger, but the quantity makes up for the size. The engine is a boxer 4 cylinder, turbocharged, and universally used for Subarus. The low center of gravity makes the SUV feel smaller than it actually is when making turns, and the body roll is very dampened. The SUV is supposedly slower than our MDX was off the line, but it doesn't feel sluggish, and the ride is FAR smoother. The CVT and suspension are probably to thank for that. I found I am never going below the speed limit or worrying that I won't be able to merge onto the highway. The standard AWD makes turning the long vehicle a breeze, and the turning radius is pretty good for the length of the vehicle. Safety is a top priority, and the stereo camera system does an amazing job with lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and mitigation braking. The rear doors have a giant latching lug that makes it feel like a tank. Although some luxury features are missing, such as personalized keyless remotes, the car has memory seats and driver profiles. To select your profile when getting in the car, simply press 1 or 2 depending on whose phone pairs first. If someone else gets in the car before you, you may need to load your profile and adjust the memory seats. While the touring model has power folding mirrors, they do not automatically fold in when the car is turned off. Additionally, the rear gate light does not turn on when you open the trunk, so you may need to flip a switch or use the remote to activate the interior lights. Although the car has a luxurious feel, there are some basic features missing that would have made it perfect. For example, the USB plugs for the wireless android and apple auto connection are located in front of the gear shift, which can be inconvenient. The car also lacks parking sensors, but the touring model has an extra front camera that can be activated to help with parking. Overall, the car is sporty and luxurious, but there are some minor improvements that could be made to enhance the driving experience. The warranty on the engine of this vehicle is a bit of a pain point, as it only covers 3 years or 36,000 miles. This is less than what some other brands offer, such as KIA's 100,000-mile warranty, which is quite limited. However, we were able to purchase our Ascent for $5,000 off MSRP in another state and used those savings to buy the 100,000-mile extended bumper-to-bumper warranty, which cost us less than a Kia Sorento. I do wish that Subaru (and Honda, for that matter) would simply warranty their vehicles for longer, given their reputation for reliability. It's not just a Subaru issue, but it's important to back up claims of reliability with solid warranties. Overall, though, this is a fantastic vehicle. My family owned a 1988 Subaru Legacy Station wagon that lasted over 188,000 miles before the head gasket blew, and I expect this Ascent to last at least as long, if not longer.

I've mostly driven SUVs throughout my life, but this vehicle is by far the best. The safety and convenience features available on the touring model are definitely worth the extra cost. Additionally, as someone who is handicapped and needs a walker, I was pleased to find that it fits well in the back with the third row folded down. The car also has many safety features that make driving a lot easier, such as lane departure warning and automatic dimming of high beams. The only downside is that it comes with a donut instead of a full-size spare tire.

I respectfully disagree with Edmunds here. I ordered a Telluride largely based on reviews like this, but every time I drove the Kia, I was a little disappointed. While I agree that the Kia is more stylish and roomy, I also appreciate the practicality of the Subaru. Because the Kia is such a 'hot' car compared to the Ascent, I was able to get a 1-year-old used Subi for about $5k less than a similar Kia. For me (6' - 215lbs), the Subaru is more comfortable (your results may vary). The biggest difference for me is the drivetrain. I much prefer the low-end torque from the turbo and the 50/50ish AWD. I don't like the CVT, but I got used to it pretty fast. I'd take the turbo and CVT over the better AT and V6. I really don't like driving FWD, and all the others always felt like driving a FWD... Kia, Pilot, etc. Lastly, on the size, yes, the Kia is roomier, which would be nice for road trips. But living in a dense city, the narrower width of the Subi is much preferred compared to larger rivals (my garage is 16' wide - yes, you can fit 2 cars - but you have to be confident parking within inches of walls). If I lived in a suburb/exurb and never went into a city, I'd probably like the larger SUV. I just never see this mentioned in reviews (because reviewers rarely ever drive in real urban locations like NY, SF, Boston, etc.).

I've been the proud owner of the 2020 Ascent for 60 days now and I must say, I'm absolutely thrilled with the 2020 Limited model. The acceleration is incredibly responsive, and the leather interior makes it a breeze to clean, especially with two kids. Plus, there are plenty of cup holders and USB ports for everyone to use. The engine and road noise are barely noticeable, making for a peaceful ride, except for the amazing sound system, of course. The Ascent feels like a true luxury car, and with so many standard safety features, it's no wonder I drive two Subaru vehicles. The fuel efficiency is also impressive for a vehicle of this size. Overall, I am thoroughly satisfied with the new 2020 Ascent and would happily give it a five-star review.

Vehicle year: 2022
Update: Hey there! After two years of owning a Subaru Ascent Touring, I have to say that I wouldn't recommend it. While Subaru claims the same horsepower and torque as the Toyota V6, it's clearly only theoretical. The matchup between the teeny engine with the turbo and CV transmission is not great. You have plenty of power off the line, but when you punch it to pass or merge at a moderate speed like 40, it totally dies. It just sits there for a good 3 seconds trying to figure out which system is going to go first and it can be dangerous! Too many times I have had a truck barreling down on me when I expect to get some power out of this pig. Now I just wait until I have a LOT of merging room. Also, they claim to have remote start, but you have to pay a monthly fee to access it! Come on, Subaru! My suggestion: spend the extra money and get the Highlander or Pathfinder. Oh, and the mileage isn't great either...put your expectations on a combined mileage in the teens, not twenties. On the bright side, I just picked up my 2022 Subaru Ascent Touring and I'm excited to work through the features, functions and performance. I chose it over the Toyota Highlander because it has a bit more room, most of the same features, and was $4K cheaper. While I'm not totally comfortable with a 2.4l flat 4 (I come from the big-block V8 era), it has plenty of power and you can easily tone-out the engine noise with a little background music from the 14 speaker stereo. I'll update you as I get more information.

Since having this vehicle, I've had a few issues. The brakes needed to be fixed three times before they were right, and the hood was vibrating at highway speeds (60-70 mph). Although there were technical bulletins out about both of these issues, it was up to me to report them. SMH. The CVT has its moments, but overall it's not a bad vehicle.

I waited a whole year to purchase my dream car. I was torn between the Subaru Ascent and Honda Pilot, but ultimately chose the former because of its spacious third row and smooth driving experience. As soon as I drove off the lot, I couldn't wait to show it off to my brother. However, he noticed a slight squeak coming from the brakes. I assumed it was just because the car was new and needed to be broken in. Unfortunately, after driving 500 miles, the squeak had only gotten louder and I was also experiencing some drag. I was surprised to find that my average mpg was only 15, despite driving conservatively. The advertised mpg was supposed to be 26/highway and 22/city, so this was a bit of a shock. Even on a 250-mile highway trip with cruise control set at 75 mph, the car only averaged 21.9 mpg. I contacted Subaru service and they asked me to bring the car in. After a day and a half, they told me that there was nothing wrong with the car and that I just needed to let it break in a bit more. I've even been using premium gas just in case, but my average mpg is still only 18 in the city and the brakes are still squeaking. I also tried using the xmode for the first time yesterday, but it was a bit funky. The car made clicking noises when going downhill and I had trouble getting it moving. Looks like I'll have to set up another appointment. Despite these issues, I'm still thrilled to have finally purchased my dream car with all the bells and whistles like leather seats, a moonroof, and a nice trim.

The vehicle has less than 400 miles on it, yet the engine light has already come on twice. Initially, the issue was identified as the oil intake solenoid, but despite this being addressed, the engine light has come on again and the problem remains unresolved.

Within 1,500 miles, we experienced several issues with the car such as the transmission jump, RAB light, no eyesight, check engine, check transmission, check at oil temp, and check owner’s manual errors. Despite these issues, the dealer informed us that nothing was wrong and that everything was within specifications. While we appreciate the great features of the car, we are concerned about our safety and the possibility of experiencing another unexplained issue with the transmission. We regret purchasing this new model and hope that a recall or lemon law will be enacted soon. Unfortunately, Subaru and the dealer have informed us that they are unable to assist us at this time.
