- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
- VIN: JTKKT624765
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Symptom: When brakes are applied, car will violently jerk to the left into the path of oncoming traffic. Countersteering to prevent collision results in left front tire skidding with poor braking. Cause: Initially, the suspected cause was a failed right front brake caliper. However, upon investigation, it was found that the ABS braking module was blocking all brake fluid from going to the right front caliper. Solution: ABS braking module must be replaced. Comment: It should be assumed that if one front wheel brake is disabled, then the other could also be disabled without warning resulting in no braking capability at all. On this vehicle, the rear brakes are also controlled by the ABS module.

Toyota had a recall and my car was supposedly fixed this problem, only to have same problem again 4 mos past the 1 year warranty on repairs. I contacted toyota...they sent me an email saying they would get back to me, and gave me a case #[XXX]. 5 mos. later had not heard from them...so called them. They said they were sorry but I was past the 1 yr warranty on recall repair. I can't understand why NHTSA allows mfg to do temporary repairs on defective systems, and kick the can down the road until consumer is responsible for further repairs, when it should have be fixed right in the 1st place. - Summary: NEAR 100,000 MILES, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYS ON. CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT; LIGHT JUST CAME ON ONE DAY UPON STARTING IT UP. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS LIGHT CAN REPRESENT AN ERROR IN CRASH SENSORS, AIR BAG SYSTEM, SEAT BELTS, SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR, ETC. INTERNET FORUMS SAY THAT OFTEN ONE OF THE WIRES UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT HAS JUST WORKED LOOSE. TOOK IT TO DEALER AND IT WAS NOT A LOOSE WIRE. THEY SAY A CERTAIN "BOX" IN THE SRS SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING, AND THE REPLACEMENT WILL COST $1300. I NOTE THAT ~17,000 OF THESE SAME VEHICLES WERE RECALLED IN 2018 FOR A SAME/SIMILAR ISSUE, BUT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL.

I'm so glad to hear that you love this little car! It sounds like it's a lot of fun to drive, especially compared to your wife's Avalon Xls. And it's great to hear that the kids love it too!

I hope you're enjoying your new Scion! It sounds like a great car, especially since it's your first new one. The gas mileage is impressive and it's cool that the interior is nice too. It definitely seems like the perfect economy car.

While passing by my local Toyota dealer, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Scion in front. Although Scions are not yet being sold in Illinois, I was able to test drive it and found it to be very unique. The car definitely has style and I particularly liked the center-mounted speedometer. The back seat has plenty of space for three of my friends, although taller people may find it a bit cramped. Overall, I think this would make a great first car for someone who values style over speed.

What a car! You certainly get a lot of options for your money. It was originally designed for the Gen Y crowd, but Gen G (for geezers like me) will love it too.

171,000 miles. It's a shame that the front wheel bearings had to be replaced three times and the rear bearings once, but everything else on the car is still original. Out of the six cars I've owned, this is the first one that has had any wheel bearing issues. I'm currently in the market for a new small car, but I won't even consider the 2012 Toyota Yaris since I don't want to deal with any more wheel bearing problems.

Our experience with this vehicle has been disappointing. Despite the dealership's promise of 40mpg on the road, we are only getting around 25-28mpg. We purchased this car with the intention of saving fuel, but the sacrifice in comfort is not worth the poor performance. The dealership and Toyota have attributed this to a 'break in period', but we have never had a car that did not come close to the advertised mpg. We specifically bought the 5-speed version to tow behind an RV, and that is when we get our best mileage. Overall, we are not satisfied with this Scion and would not recommend it.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Scion. I mainly used it for driving around town, but I did take it on a few 200 mile weekend trips. Overall, it was a great value for the money with its low purchase price and operating costs. The power from the 108-hp motor was what I expected, but the 5-speed manual transmission made the driving experience more interesting. Although, I do wish it had a 6th gear for speeds over 70mph. The ride quality was a bit bouncy on the interstate due to the short wheelbase and firm suspension, but it was a blast to drive around corners and zip around city traffic. After 5 years and 50K miles, I can say it was a positive experience. However, I recently traded it in for a sporty euro sedan. Thanks for listening to my story!

I purchased this car used with 18K miles on it. Although it was quite dirty, it cleaned up nicely and had been primarily used for city driving. Since I only receive 30 cents per mile reimbursement, I needed an economical car for work. This car gets about 34 mpg, which is not as good as the 43 mpg I get with my XD. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car after 35K miles. A retainer fell off the Toyota brake pad, causing the front brakes to become noisy and requiring replacement. Additionally, the right rear wheel bearing went out at 36K miles, which is earlier than expected for a Toyota. I am now concerned about what other issues may arise at 38K miles.
Dillon Franecki 2024-05-05
Vehicle year: 2005
I have replaced two wheel bearings, two bent wheels, stabilizers, brakes and calipers, wheel fitting, and all fluids. Although it cost me $1,700 to repair a car worth $4,800, I am confident that it was the right decision. However, considering the mileage of only 78,000 miles, I would recommend considering a Honda as an alternative.
