Common 2014 Scion Tc problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Scion tC 2014, several common problems have been reported:

  • Check Engine Light Due to Defective VVT-i Controller: Another common problem reported by owners is the check engine light coming on due to a defective VVT-i controller. This issue can affect the engine's performance and fuel efficiency, requiring diagnostic testing and potential replacement of the VVT-i controller.
  • Rough Running Conditions and Smoke From Exhaust: Owners have also experienced rough running conditions and smoke coming from the exhaust in the Scion tC 2014. This could indicate engine or exhaust system problems that need to be addressed promptly to prevent further damage and ensure optimal performance.

These common problems with the Scion tC 2014 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to keep the vehicle running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.

What is the most common problems with Scion tC?

Some of the common Scion tC issues include clutch failure, water pump seal failure, excessive oil consumption, and more. The Scion tC can last more than 250,000 miles if it's well-maintained.

How long will a 2014 Scion tC last?

Since they're made by Toyota, they're just as reliable. You can easily surpass 200k miles and the car will still run like new (I know from my 07 TC, which has about 210k atm).

Is Scion as reliable as Toyota?

While the Scion brand may no longer be in production, it was a subsidiary of Toyota, a brand known for producing durable and reliable vehicles. This reliability has transferred well to the Scion xB, which boasts a generally solid track record of performance and minimal major issues.

Does a Scion tC have a Toyota engine?

This was done by taking a Toyota Avensis chassis (which the Scion tC is based on, originally an AWD platform) and converted it into RWD. The car was powered by a tuned BEAMS 3S-GE engine.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: JTKJF5C78E3

  • Summary: ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE HOUSING AROUND THE AIR CONDITIONER FILLS WITH WATER FROM CONDENSATION, THE DRAINAGE TUBE IS NARROW AND CLOGS, WHICH CAUSES THE WATER TO DRIP OUT OF THE HOUSING AND INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE INTERIOR WHERE IT SWAMPS THE CARPETING FROM FRONT TO BACK. I KNOW AC NORMALLY DOES NOT QUALIFY AS A SAFETY CONCERN BUT TO MY UNDERSTANDING THERE IS ELECTRIC WIRING THAT RUNS UNDER THE CARPET THAT IS CERTAINLY NOT DESIGNED TO BE UNDER AN INCH OF WATER AND THEN THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR HARMFUL MOLD TO DEVELOP FROM THE WET CARPET. THE DEALER WILL CHARGE TO CLEAR THE CLOG BUT THEY HAVE SINCE TOLD ME THERE IS A PERMANENT FIX (AN AC CASING WITH BETTER DRAINAGE) WHICH COSTS MORE THAN $2000 TO INSTALL. A SIMPLE SEARCH ON THE INTERNET SHOWS TOYOTA HAS BEEN IGNORING THIS DESIGN FLAW AND THIS PROBLEM SINCE THE MODEL REDESIGN IN 2011. THEY HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE WHICH CAN EFFECT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE OCCUPANTS. I KNOW A NARROW TUBE DRAIN LINE SEEMS LIKE A MINOR THING BUT THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO HAPPEN IN MOST CARS. WHILE IT HAS BEEN A CONCERN FOR SCION TC OWNERS SINCE 2011. I DRIVE A 2014. THERE WAS PLENTY OF TIME FOR TOYOTA TO OFFER A BETTER CASING OR A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM OVER THE YEARS. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO TOYOTA AND THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING SINCE MY CAR IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY DESPITE THAT MY CAR WAS IN FOR THIS TEMPORARY REPAIR SEVERAL TIMES WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY NEVER OFFERED THE PERMANENT FIX UNTIL NOW.

LUCKILY I REMEMBERED IN DRIVERS ED THAT WHEN A TIRE BLOWS OUT (EVEN THOUGH THIS SITUATION IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT) YOU FIRMLY HOLD ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL AND HOLD IT STRAIGHT. THE CAR THEN STRAIGHTENED OUT AND STOPPED ONCE I RAN INTO THE RAILING.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-15
  • VIN: JTKJF5C75E3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAD AN INCIDENT OF SPONTANEOUS GLASS BREAKAGE OF THE MOONROOF ON MY 2014 SCION TC. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. I WAS IN A PARKED IN A PARKING LOT WITH THE IGNITION OFF. I HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION SOUND SIMILAR TO THE SOUND OF A GUN SHOT. THE SOUND CAME FROM THE GLASS MOONROOF LOCATED BEHIND THE SUNROOF EXPLODING/SHATTERING. I WAS NOT DRIVING AND THERE WAS NO IMPACT THAT OCCURRED. THE EVENT WAS SPONTANEOUS AND HAPPENED OUT OF NOWHERE. BEING THAT I WAS STATIONARY THE GLASS IN THE MIDDLE DID NOT IMMEDIATELY FALL IN AND THE OUTSIDE EDGES HAD SHATTERED AND WHERE FORCEFULLY THROWN ON TO THE CAR AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THE MIDDLE WAS ODDLY BALLOONED/DOMED IN THE MIDDLE. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS 2 MILES AWAY AND FROM THAT SHORT DRIVE THE CENTER OF THE GLASS BEGAN TO CAVE IN AND ALLOW GLASS TO ENTER INTO THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY ABOVE WHERE PASSAGES SIT IN THE BACK SEAT. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS IN THE BACKSEAT WHEN THIS HAPPENED OUR DIRECTLY OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AND WAS INJURED BY THIS. THROUGH FURTHER RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT TEMPERED GLASS CAN SPONTANEOUSLY BREAK. SOME OF THE CAUSES OF THIS TO HAPPEN INCLUDE BINDING OF THE GLASS IN THE FRAME, CAUSING STRESSES TO DEVELOP AS THE GLASS EXPANDS AND CONTRACTS DUE TO THERMAL CHANGES OR DEFLECTS DUE TO WIND. INTERNAL DEFECTS WITHIN THE GLASS SUCH AS NICKEL SULFIDE INCLUSIONS. DAMAGES ACCRUED DURING INSTALLATION. THERMAL STRESSES IN THE GLASS AND INADEQUATE GLASS THICKNESS TO RESIST WIND LOAD. I ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER CLAIMS INCLUDING SCION TC'S AND THE MOONROOF BREAKING AND RISK OF SHOWERING GLASS ON TOP OF DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS. I WENT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY WANT TO TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT AND HAVE PUSHED IT OFF TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE GLASS SHOP AND COLLISION CENTER BELIEVE ITS FROM THE STRESS LOAD THE FRAME PUTS ON THE GLASS THAT CAUSED THIS SPONTANEOUS BREAK.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-12-17
  • VIN: JT3GP10V3V7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS, FIRST, THE PASSENGER DOOR BEGAN TO INTERMITTENTLY RESPOND TO LOCKING/UNLOCKING COMMANDS. NEITHER THE KEY FOB NOR THE SWITCH IN THE VEHICLE WOULD WORK, AND EVENTUALLY THE DOOR LOCK HAD TO BE MANUALLY OPERATED. A FEW WEEKS LATER, THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR BEGAN HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY CRASHES ACCORDING TO ONLINE DATABASES. NO DAMAGE TO EITHER DOOR HAS OCCURRED THAT COULD COMPROMISE ANY ELECTRICAL MECHANISM WITH EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS. A FRIEND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER AND WAS TOLD THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS ARE KNOWN TO FAIL IN CERTAIN YEAR VEHICLES MADE BY TOYOTA. I AM PRETTY SURE THIS IS THE ISSUE WITH MY 2014 SCION TC NOW. I CAN UNDERSTAND THE PART FAILING ON HIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS ABOUT TEN YEARS OLD AT THE TIME, HOWEVER MY CAR IS ONLY 4-5 YEARS OLD. THE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM ON MY SCION CURRENTLY ONLY OPERATES THE REAR HATCH, FOR NOW. I AM ONLY ABLE TO SECURE MY VEHICLE IF I MANUALLY LOCK BOTH DOORS, AND THEN PRESS LOCK ON THE KEY FOB TO ARM THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM. I CANNOT ACCESS THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WITH THE KEY AS THERE IS NO KEY HOLE PROVIDED ON THAT SIDE. IF SO MANY OF TOYOTA'S DOOR ACTUATORS ARE FAILING LIKE THIS, THEY SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE THE POORLY MANUFACTURED VERSIONS THEY INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLES SINCE THE PARTS ARE SO EXPENSIVE NOT TO MENTION LABOR. MY FRIEND ENDED UP TRADING HIS 4RUNNER AND LEFT THE TOYOTA BRAND ALTOGETHER. I HAVE ALWAYS PREFERRED TOYOTA AND ACTUALLY ENCOURAGED HIM TO BUY ONE AS WELL. HOWEVER, I AM HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME CONVINCING MYSELF FROM TAKING THE SAME ROUTE AS HIM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA MOMENTUM IN FAIRFIELD, CALIFORNIA WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT RODENTS HAD DESTROYED THE WIRING HARNESS IN THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE SOY BASED CONSTRUCTION OF THE WIRES. THE WIRING HARNESS WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 51,000. • Summary: HAVE YOU HAD ANY COMPLAINTS ON THE N5000 PLUS TIRES? WE BOUGHT A SET FOR MY 2014 SCION TC EARLY LAST YEAR AND AT ABOUT 18,000 MILES ONE OF THE TIRES BLEW THE SIDEWALL OUT. AROUND FEB 10, 2017, THE OTHER TIRE DID THE SAME THING. I HAVE WRITTEN NEXEN BUT HAVE NOT HEARD BACK. THESE TIRES ARE RATED AT 65,000 BUT THEY HAVE ABOUT 18,000 AND THEY HAVE WORN QUITE A BIT. I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN SAY A TIRE SHOULD GET AT LEASST THAT MANY MILES AND YOU DONT GET 1/2.

STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-15
  • VIN: JTKJF5C72E3
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
  • Summary: STEERING WHEEL TURNS TOO EASILY TO HAVE A SAFE AMOUNT OF CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. THERE IS VERY LITTLE TRACTION WHERE THE TIRES MEET THE ROADS. I SPENT $700.00 ON COOPER TIRES THINKING THIS WOULD HELP, BUT STILL CAR SLIDES OVER THE GROUND. I CHECKED TO SEE IF THE TRACTION CONTROL WAS OFF BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CAR. I PAID CASH FOR MY CAR AND HAVE NO OTHER RECOURSE BUT TO KEEP IT. I HAVE NO MORE MONEY. SPECIFICALLY, WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION THERE IS VERY LITTLE STABILITY OR TRACTION ON THE ROAD, AND IT IS VERY SCARY. THIS KIND OF DRIVING WOULD BE NORMAL ON ICY ROADS, BUT SCION TC DRIVES LIKE THIS ON DRY ROADS IN WARM WEATHER. *TR

2014 Scion Tc recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2014 Scion Tc.

2018-09-20
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain Toyota Racing Development (TRD) brake kits, part numbers PTR09-21111 and PTR09-52080, sold by Toyota as an optional accessory for model year 2008-2015 Scion xB, and 2011-2016 Scion tC vehicles. Over time, the brake hoses in these kits may fatigue and fail.
  • Consequence: Failure of a brake hose will reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify all known owners of the Scion xB and Scion tC vehicles upon which an involved optional TRD Brake Kit could have been installed. If the vehicle is equipped with one of the TRD brake kits, it will be replaced with a standard equipment brake kit, free of charge. The recall began November 16, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0U.

Negative 2014 Scion Tc car reviews

  1. Quincy O'Conner 2025-01-01

My wife and I decided to get an economical commuter car since our kids are grown and we ride together to work. After considering a few options, we settled on a coupe. We compared the TC, Honda Civic and Hyundai Veloster. The Civic was more expensive and had similar gas mileage to the Veloster, which was comparable in price. However, the TC had a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that gave it more power. The front passenger seat was spacious enough for a rear passenger up to 6' tall, which was great for my wife who is 5'6

  2. Lucas Kuhlman 2024-10-22

This car had a lot of issues and was constantly breaking down. I'm glad I was able to get rid of it before it caused any harm.

  3. Robert Huels 2024-06-15

Plastic everywhere, but it adds to the charm. It may rattle a bit when playing music, but that just adds to the character. There is some engine vibration at idle, but it's not too bad. It could be better on gas, but it's worth it for the fun you'll have driving it.

  4. Ron Hessel 2024-04-26

The interior quality may not be the most inspiring, and the car may not be the most peppy even with a manual transmission. However, it's important to note that I may be overly critical since I am coming from a Camry and a Supra. I do believe that dealers could benefit from listening more to their customers. For example, when a customer says they have their own financing, it's best not to shove a credit application in their face as it can cause them to walk right out, as I did.

  5. Roosevelt Cartwright 2024-01-17

Hi there! I've had my car for 5 years now and I wanted to share my experience with you. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the manual transmission input shaft bearing twice in just 58,000 miles, which cost me $3,000 each time. On top of that, the cabin can be quite noisy and the ride can be a bit rough. I've also noticed that the interior door panels and sunroof tend to rattle quite a bit. However, the motor is fantastic! If you're considering buying this car, I would recommend going for an automatic transmission. Thanks for reading!

Positive 2014 Scion Tc car reviews

  1. Mustafa Williamson 2025-03-19

Hey there! I've owned 4 cars in my life and test driven hundreds more. Why, you ask? Because I absolutely love cars, not just the flashy sports cars that everyone loves, but all cars. Recently, I bought a 2013 Scion tC and let me tell you, this car is amazing to look at and to drive! I had the 2010 Scion tC before this one, and I couldn't help but think that they could have made it better. It was pretty to look at, and the aftermarket parts for it were cheap and made it look and run better, but it's nothing compared to the 2013 model. The tC I have now is just so awesome! It hugs the corners, handles very well in the snow, and it's a game changer in the car industry.

  2. Jed Terry 2025-03-16

I work at a Toyota/Scion dealership and after a few months, I purchased my tC. I absolutely love it! It's fun to drive, has a great stereo, a comfortable interior, and a moonroof that I adore. I'm getting an average of around 30 mpg in my manual transmission tC, which is fantastic. Compared to my previous Civic Si, the tC is a lot more comfortable and just feels better overall. I also appreciate that it has 8 airbags and is an IIHS top safety pick. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my car.

  3. Felix Kulas 2025-03-15

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2003 RSX Acura. I've had it since September 2012 and have driven it for 9000 miles. In my opinion, it's the best bang for your buck considering the 180hp smooth revving engine. The panoramic sunroof, 300 watts blue tooth pioneer, 18in alloys, flat bottom thick steering, six-speed auto, and huge brake calibers make it an incredible value. The interior is very comfortable and roomy, with incredible leg room in the back and huge cargo space. The ride is comfortable for a coupe, and the handling is predictable and sharp. I think this car is begging to be driven cross country! It looks expensive, and you don't see many on the roads. Yes, the interior is a bit plasticky as others have mentioned, but for only $20k, it's definitely worth it!

  4. Hyman Wunsch 2025-03-12

I purchased my 2014 Six-speed manual model in late spring of the same year. I had three cars in mind: the 2014 Corolla S manual, the Scion FR-S and the tC. My criteria were simple: it had to be a manual and have decent cargo room. During my test drives, I crossed off the Corolla due to its widely spaced gear range and high revving engine. The FR-S had good performance and gear selection, but it wasn't practical for my daily commute and winter driving. The tC, on the other hand, is a hatchback, which I prefer over trunks. While it may not have the performance of an FR-S, the power to weight ratio of the car is very good for its size. The 2.5L engine is the same unit found on the Camry and is known for its reliability. The shift throws and clutch pedal feel great, and it's a comfortable car for long road trips. Gas mileage isn't as good as a Camry due to its gearing, but it hits the target MPG numbers nicely with non-ethanol regular gas and/or premium. In my experience, I have found that short shifting helps to increase MPG in the city. On average, I get around 29.5 to 30 MPG for my mixed road commutes, even with the AC on full blast. The seat comfort is excellent, with Toyota putting in about the same amount of padding as the Camrys. What I appreciate most is the ability to stretch out and adjust my posture during long drives. The FR-S seat, on the other hand, is form-fitting like a fighter cockpit and can only be tolerated for so long. The rear seat comfort is also excellent. As for the factory Pioneer sound system, put it on the The 16 model comes with a smart key featuring push-button start and a rear window wiper, which were first introduced in the 2014 limited production Monogram series tC. I am considering trading in my 14 model for a 16 model to take advantage of these features. Although the 16 model's radio has a 7-inch touch screen, the CD player has been sacrificed. However, in my case, it should be possible to swap in my 2014 radio since the 16 model doesn't have a backup camera. Apart from that, the engine, wheels, body, moonroof, and interior are identical. If you are shopping for a used model, I would recommend getting a Certified one with a good maintenance history and added warranty coverage, which will likely have new tires as well. If you opt for a new model, you will receive standard Scion Boost/Toyota Care with 2 years and 25,000 miles of paid maintenance. Although Scion is going away in 2017, it should not affect the resale value of the car, which is as solid as any Toyota and can last decades with proper maintenance while looking good as well.

  5. Schuyler Kuhic 2025-02-27

I'm a 25-year-old new mom and I absolutely adore my 2012 Scion tC, which I affectionately named Hoss ❤️. I purchased it with only 30k miles on the odometer and I'm the second owner. Hoss and I have been through a lot together! It's definitely the best car for my money. I've driven it cross country, up and down mountains, through snow and ice, in hot and cold weather, and even slept in it. I've pushed it to the limit, driving 130mph in an emergency, running over a boulder, and driving on the rim for 30 miles. Despite all of this, my car has saved my life and is still going strong after 130k miles! I get decent gas mileage, averaging around 25mpg even with my lead foot. When I drive more conservatively, I get even better gas mileage. I've been on many 20+ hour road trips, blasting my thumping stereo system the whole way. The car is surprisingly spacious and comfortable, with a roomy interior and trunk. I've even slept in it and made a bed in the trunk. The whole top of the car is glass, which makes it feel like sleeping under the stars. I've only had to do basic maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, and brake replacements. I've never had to do any major mechanical repairs, but if I did, I wouldn't be scared to work on it myself. The car is set up in a convenient way that makes it easy to modify and work on. It's also super fun to drive! Although it's not a Subaru STI or anything, it's still pretty quick, especially from a complete stop. I've had a lot of fun with people at stoplights, although I've also gotten a couple of speeding tickets. The steering is excellent and the car can turn on a dime. I love the look of the steering wheel, but it's worth noting that it's difficult to find a steering wheel cover for it. Even though I'm a new mom, I still love my 2-door car. There's plenty of room in the back and the front seat leans all the way back, making it super easy even with a baby.I actually think it's faster to lean back and get a baby in a 2-door than in a 4-door where you have to get in and out to put your kid in. Also, during my wreck, this car kept me safe. I was by myself and slid off the road (completely my fault for speeding on the pouring rain) into a cement barrier at 55mph on the passenger side. Thankfully, I was able to put a tire on it and drive home with no injury. I had to get new rims and the dents fixed, but Hoss is still going strong and I will do everything I can to keep him that way! ❤️
