Common 2008 Scion Tc problems
The Scion tC, a compact sedan produced by Toyota under the Scion brand, is known for its reliability and affordability. Despite its high depreciation rate, the tC has received high scores for its reliability, with RepairPal giving it an above-average score of 4 out of 5. However, like any vehicle, the Scion tC has its share of common problems.
One of the most common issues with the Scion tC is clutch failure. This problem is often caused by a manufacturing defect that leads to pressure leakage from the cylinder block through a failed head gasket. When this occurs, the vehicle may experience overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, and rough idling.
Another common problem with the Scion tC is water pump seal failure. This issue can lead to coolant leakage and overheating, which can cause significant damage to the vehicle's engine if not addressed promptly.
The Scion tC is also known for excessive oil consumption. This problem is often caused by worn piston rings or valve guides, which can lead to increased oil consumption and decreased engine performance. While this issue is not typically catastrophic, it can be costly to repair and may require frequent oil changes to prevent engine damage.
Finally, the Scion tC is prone to head gasket failure. This issue is often caused by the same manufacturing defect that leads to clutch failure, and can result in overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, and rough idling. In severe cases, head gasket failure can lead to engine failure, which can be costly to repair.
While these issues may seem daunting, it's important to note that the Scion tC is still a reliable vehicle overall. With proper maintenance and care, the tC can last for more than 250,000 miles. Additionally, many of these issues can be addressed through routine maintenance and repairs, which can help prevent more significant problems down the line.
In summary, the Scion tC is a reliable vehicle that is known for its affordability and practicality. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems, including clutch failure, water pump seal failure, excessive oil consumption, and head gasket failure. With proper maintenance and care, these issues can be addressed and prevented, helping to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-15
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I HAVE AN 08' TOYOTA SCION TC THAT IS BURNING OIL AT AN ABNORMAL RATE. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOPPED OFF MY OIL AND TAPED THE DIPSTICK DOWN AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK AFTER I DRIVE IT ABOUT 1200 MILES. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 1200 MILES AND AFTER WAITING HOURS FOR THEM TO CHECK THE OIL ONLY FOR THEM TO COME OUT AND TELL ME EVERYTHING WAS OKAY. I ASKED THEM IF THERE WAS ANY OIL LOSS AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT'S NORMAL FOR OLDER ENGINES TO BURN OIL. NOT IN MY BOOK, NOT FOR ANY VEHICLE. I KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THEIR TOYOTA FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS AND NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM. SOMEONE WITH OVER 200,00 MILES ON THEIR TOYOTA AND NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM. I DON'T THINK HAVING THE OIL LIGHT COME ON BEFORE THE NEXT SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE IS NORMAL. BUT I'M A 26 YEAR OLD FEMALE SO WHAT DO I KNOW RIGHT? I KNOW THAT IT'S NOT NORMAL. THIS HAS BECOME SUCH AN INCONVENIENCE THAT ALL I WANT IS THE PROBLEM FIXED. FOR THEM TO TAKE APART MY ENGINE AND REPLACE THE [XXX] PISTONS SO I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT CHECKING MY OIL EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS. TOYOTA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MISTAKE AND I WOULD LIKE IT FIXED IF THEY WANT ME TO STAY A TOYOTA CUSTOMER. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

I was considering purchasing a Mazda3, but unfortunately, the dealer did not offer me enough for my trade-in. I decided to explore other options and came across the Corolla. While browsing, I stumbled upon the TC and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Scion manufactured it. I immediately knew that I wanted to purchase it and did so the following day. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase, although I must admit that the seats are a bit uncomfortable for me as I am 6'2 and require lumbar support. However, for the price of 18k, it is an excellent value and difficult to find a better deal elsewhere.

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice. I also had a Nissan Altima before, but I must say that your new Scion seems to be a real upgrade. The 2.4 L engine and lighter weight make for a quick and smooth ride. I appreciate your insight on how the driver and tire pressure can affect gas mileage. It's great to hear that your car handles well and has a sportier suspension. Toyota is known for making reliable cars, so I'm sure you'll enjoy your new Scion for years to come!

This is my first new car purchase. I was looking for a quality sporty 2-door car and after comparing the features, quality, performance, and price, it was an easy decision. The tC is a much better value when you add its features to a car like a Civic or Tiberon. One of the nicest things about buying this car is that Scion dealerships do not add any unnecessary features. You get to choose what features are added when you buy the car. They just give you a well-appointed blank canvas to have fun expressing yourself with. My Scion dealership even drove over 300 miles to get the color car I wanted in a short amount of time. Plus, this car looks really cool and is fun to drive.

I've owned this car for 1 year and 7 months and have only experienced one issue, which was promptly resolved under warranty. The car runs perfectly and requires only regular oil changes and weekly gas fill-ups. The back seats offer plenty of leg room, although taller individuals may find the head room a bit cramped. The audio system sounds great even in its stock form, and the build quality is typical of Toyota's high standards. Overall, it's been a great car to own, and I usually get around 28mpg. I would have kept it longer if I didn't want something faster! :)
-
You seem like someone who enjoys trying out different cars, but this one is truly exceptional. It's affordable, stylish, and comfortable, and people often mistake it for a much more expensive car. Even with two kids in car seats, you find it spacious and convenient. Overall, you absolutely love this car and it's a reliable and fun ride!

I had some issues with my car, including a recall for the gas cap in the second month, tires that are only suitable for paved roads in dry conditions and started to separate at 20k, getting stuck in the middle of the street with only half an inch of snow, and a throttle that had a delay and acted up a couple of times. Unfortunately, at 30k, I hit a section of bad rural road which supposedly caused damage to two wheels and triggered the side curtain airbag, resulting in a repair cost of over $5000 which Toyota will not cover. Despite having just gotten new tires the week before, my car doesn't shake or show any external damage. If you live in rural America, I would advise against purchasing this car. I did file a claim with the NHTSA.

This car has many great features and looks very nice, but unfortunately, the quality is not up to par. There are many squeaks and rattles, including the moon roof which rattles terribly. Despite taking it to the dealership and contacting Toyota, the issue remains unresolved. I purchased a 2008 Scion tC for myself and a 2009 Scion tC for my wife on the same day, and unfortunately, her car has the same poor workmanship issues. While the car is nice looking and has good features, it is underpowered and the quality is not what I expected from Toyota. I cannot recommend this vehicle.

I've had this car for over 2 years now and unfortunately, I've experienced a few issues. The original tires caused the car to sit lower than my previous car, which resulted in the high curb pulling out the undercover when I parked head-on. This caused some damage to my bumper since it was attached to the undercover. After driving for 35K miles, I had to replace all 4 tires. A few months later, I accidentally hit a garbage bin which knocked off my passenger side mirror. Unfortunately, the car wash attendant also broke off the rear hatchback garnish/handle while cleaning the back. Lastly, I hit a gutter/driveway which caused some damage to the undercover. It's been a bit of a headache, but I'm hoping to get everything fixed soon.

Although I have experienced some issues with this car, such as auto window problems, a trunk door that won't stay open in cold weather, and a battery replacement after only 2 years of ownership, I still believe in the quality of Toyota products. While these issues are frustrating, I have never encountered them with any of my previous Toyota cars. I am confident that Toyota will continue to improve their products and I will consider purchasing from them again in the future.
