Common 2001 Saab 9-3 problems
The 2001 Saab 9-3, like any vehicle, has its share of common problems. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the anti-lock brake system (ABS) and traction control system. These systems share the same module, and many owners have reported persistent problems with the ABS and traction control lights.
Another common issue with the Saab 9-3 is cooler oil leaks. This problem is caused by leaks between the lubrication and cooling systems due to the chain tensioner. This issue can be expensive to fix and should be taken seriously, as it can lead to significant damage if not addressed promptly.
The Saab 9-3 convertible is known for its reliability and value retention, but potential buyers should ensure that the hood is in good working order. Raising and lowering the hood a few times during a test drive can help identify any issues.
Interior heating is another common problem with the Saab 9-3, but it is typically not a deep fault within the air conditioning unit. Instead, the issue often lies with the dial controls and knobs, which can easily crack off and split. Fortunately, these parts are relatively inexpensive to repair, costing less than £10 each.
Oil sludge is a potential problem for petrol-powered 9-3s, particularly if the previous owner has not kept up with regular services or used thicker oil than recommended. Checking the service history is essential to ensure that the owner has been diligent in maintaining the vehicle. If not, costly problems can arise.
Finally, strut mounts can cause grinding noises and squeaks, particularly during cornering. These mounts and bearings are located at the top of the McPherson struts in the suspension system. Listening carefully for these noises during a test drive can help identify any potential issues with the strut mounts.
In summary, the 2001 Saab 9-3 has several common problems, including ABS and traction control issues, cooler oil leaks, potential problems with the convertible hood, interior heating control cracking, oil sludge, and strut mount noises. However, with proper maintenance and regular inspections, these issues can be identified and addressed before they become significant problems.
What is the most common problem with the Saab 9-3?
Many owners have complained about engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC). Saab vehicles primarily use a DIC system, with ignition coils that directly go on top of the spark plugs. If there's a problem with the DIC, the engine may crank but not start.
What is the most reliable engine in the Saab 9-3?
Saab 9-3 Saloon engines, drive and performance
Eight-valve single-turbo models (120hp TiD) are generally considered the most reliable, with the 130, 160 and 180hp later twin-turbo 16-valve variants the next choice.
What year of Saab is the most reliable?
The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.
What went wrong with the Saab?
Holveg and Oliver reported Saab was too small to compete, producing just 150,000 units a year. At its price level, ultimately the company had insufficient room to grow. They concluded that Saab's reluctance to diversify into new, profitable sectors like small cars and small SUVs was the real issue.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- Summary: I left my home with my daughter in the afternoon to go to the bank and hardware store. I drove to the bank to make a deposit. We had to wait for quite awhile in the drive-through line at the bank, so I turned off my engine a couple of times rather than having the car idle. After making the deposit at the bank, I pulled out of the bank lot and began driving to the hardware store. I had driven for about two minutes and was driving along at approximately 25-30 miles an hour, and suddenly there was a terrible explosion at my left ear and massive pain in my left arm. I thought the car had been shot at and my arm hit. I was terrified we were still being shot at and looked at my daughter whose hands were over her ears. I could tell by that time that I was not bleeding and so was worried that the bullet had hit her. I could hear only faintly out of my left ear. There was smoke and the smell of an explosion. I could see by this time that an airbag had come out of my driver's seat and thought that it had been hit too. My daughter told me she was o.k. and to pull the car over so that we could see what had happened. I was shaking with fear and pain in my arm but finally calmed down enough to park the car and get out to see what had happened. It became clear that the car had not been shot at and that the driver's side seat airbag had simply spontaneously exploded without any warning whatsoever. The driver's seat side seam was completely ripped, multiple pieces of seat foam were lying about, and the air bag in the seat was out and ripped. The seat was still smoking. Luckily I had had my window completely down, or the explosion would have been louder in the car, and my arm and left side could have been more badly injured. I called my longtime Saab repairman who told me that what happened to me was extremely rare. He said I would need a new seat and that the computer system would need to be reset for the airbag system to work again. Insurance will examine soon. I may try GM too.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

- VIN: YS3DF58K512
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: AT APPROXIMATELY 75,000 MILES, DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AROUND 70MPH, OIL LIGHT BEGINS FLICKERING. AFTER SLOWING DOWN TO 60 THE LIGHT STOPPED FLICKERING AND INSTEAD STAYED ON. FROM THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN TO PULL OFF THE ROAD A KNOCKING SOUND COULD BE HEARD FROM THE ENGINE PROGRESSIVELY GETTING LOUDER. THE CAR WAS THEN TAKEN HOME AND INSPECTED. REMOVING THE OIL PAN REVEALED THAT THE OIL PICK-UP TUBE WAS CLOGGED AND THE PAN WAS CAKED WITH BURNT OIL. A LOCAL MECHANIC ESTIMATED $3,000 TO REPAIR THE INTERNAL DAMAGE. CALLED SAAB, THEY SAID THE CAR WAS BEYOND ANY WARRANTY AND THAT IT WAS MY FAULT FOR NOT TURNING THE CAR OFF IMMEDIATELY AFTER SEEING THE LIGHT. FURTHERMORE AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, I SPOKE WITH 3 SAAB REPRESENTATIVES WHO CLAIMED TO KNOW NOTHING OF THIS OIL SLUDGE ISSUE AND WERE NOT ABLE TO BRING IT UP AS IT DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL NUMBER, A FOURTH ONE WAS ABLE TO PULL UP A RECORD BASED ON MY V.I.N. SHOWING THAT THIS KNOWN OIL SLUDGE PROBLEM WAS "REPAIRED" BACK IN 2006 UNDER THE NAME "SPECIAL POLICY" WHICH WAS GOOD FOR 8 YEARS AFTER THE IN SERVICE DATE SO LONG AS ALL RECORDS OF THE CAR WERE KEPT. ACCORDING TO THIS REPORT MY ARGUMENT WAS POINTLESS CONSIDERING I WAS APPROXIMATELY 5 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY AND DID NOT HAVE THE REQUIRED SERVICE LOGS. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-24
- VIN: YS3DD58H312
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID # 04V557000 AND 06V126000 ARE RECALLS WHICH NECESSITATED SAAB TO INSPECT THE FUEL PUMP BRACKETS. THE 2001 SAAB 9-3, WHICH I OWN, WAS FIRST REPAIRED BECAUSE THE FUEL LINES WERE CORRUPTED AND CAUSED FUEL TO PUMP OUT INTO THE OPEN ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK. THIS WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY AND WAS NOT UNDER RECALL AT THAT TIME. MUCH LATER, I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR AN INSPECTION OF THE FUEL PUMP BRACKET TO MAKE SURE THE A "NEW" BRACKET HAD BEEN INSTALLED. THESE TWO INSPECTIONS REQUIRED THE LOWERING OF THE FUEL TANK. I RECEIVED A CODE 0442 A FEW MONTHS LATER AND HAD THE SAAB DEALER INSPECT POSSIBLE CAUSE. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE VENT HOSE FILLER PIPE HAS A LEAK AS DETERMINED BY A "SMOKE" CHECK. LATER, AT A DIFFERENT SHOP, WHILE HAVING A TIRE ROTATION, THE TECHNICIAN HAD ME COME OUT AND CHECK THE RIGHT WHEEL AREA WITH THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY REMOVED. WHAT WAS REVEALED WAS A "RUB" HOLE IN THE VENT HOSE CAUSED BY CONTACT WITH THE SHOCK ABSORBER. I HAVE DIGITAL PHOTOS OF THE DAMAGE. THE DAMAGED VENT LINE IS EITHER 1) POOR ENGINEERING OF THE VENT LINE IN RELATION TO THE SHOCK ABSORBER, OR 2) THE DAMAGE WAS THE ACT OF POOR RE-INSTALLMENT OF THE FUEL TANK EITHER ON THE REPAIR OR LATER INSPECTION. MY QUESTION IS THIS, " HAS THERE BEEN ANY REPORTS OF SHOCK ABSORBERS, OR OTHER PARTS, CAUSING HOLES IN THE VENT LINES WHICH PASS NEAR THE RIGHT WHEEL ASSEMBLY?" SAAB HAS NOT BEEN VERY HELPFUL IN TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. *TR

Positive 2001 Saab 9-3 car reviews

I've been driving my Saab 9-3 for six years now and it's been a great experience. With about 71,000 miles on the odometer, it's still going strong. It's a fun and comfortable car to drive, and I've found it to be very reliable. The gas mileage is amazing, especially with the 185 engine and five-speed stickshift - I get low to mid thirties on the road. I plan on keeping it for another five years or so! While no car is perfect, this one comes pretty close, especially when you consider the designer's fidelity to the Saab heritage. I actually started with a three-cylinder Saab, so I know what I'm talking about!
-
Excellent car, it's very stylish and has good handling. It also comes with enough space to actually be useful. I highly recommend it. The car looks better than most in its class.
-
It's great to hear that you're enjoying driving your car! It's also wonderful to know that it has been reliable for you, even after reaching over 100k miles. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
-
I'm thrilled to say that I've enjoyed every mile of the first 25,000 in this automobile. It handles great and provides the safety, performance, reliability, and comfort to make each ride an enjoyable experience. Even with the minimum sized 2.0 Turbo engine, this car is fast and ready to move into the fast lane. The ride is firm yet comfortable, and the interior is quiet with very nice controls that remind me of the cockpit of a small airplane. Additionally, the car has a powerful AC that uses an air filter prior to bringing air into the car.

Hi there! I recently purchased my 3rd Saab with 79,000 km on it and I'm loving the drive! Although I had a bit of bad luck with a 900 lemon in the past, I was excited to buy a 2001 model because of the cavernous trunk area, which is hard to find in sedan models. Unfortunately, shortly after buying the car, I noticed thick grey smoke coming out of the exhaust when I started it. I took it to the dealer and they advised me that my turbo was on the way out, with a repair cost of $1,600. On top of that, I've also noticed a few other issues like my stereo lights not coming on at night, a broken driver's side fog light assembly, an antenna that works only when it wants to, and premature rusting and bubbling on my sunroof frame. It's a shame that these issues have affected the resale value, but I'm still enjoying my Saab nonetheless!

I was warned by other Saab owners that the car could be quirky and that Saab dealers are generally expensive and difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, they were right. While the engine is great and the handling is terrific, the check/engine electronic portion of the car is horrible. The biggest issue with this vehicle is trying to get it fixed or serviced. This alone will prevent me from buying another Saab. Although it is fun to drive and has great gas mileage, the persistent problems with the direct ignition cassette (now part of a recall) and the poor service from numerous dealers are major drawbacks.

As a SAAB enthusiast, I have had some issues with this car. However, I have taken care of all the necessary repairs and maintenance to ensure its optimal performance. These include replacing the fog lamps, water pump and hosing, serpentine belts, headlamp halogens, brake pads, engine mounts, transmission mounts, front wheel bearings, window motors and mechanism, hydraulics for the top, SID re-manufactured, and mass airflow meter. Now, the car runs smoothly and reliably. It has been a worthwhile investment and I am confident in its continued performance.

This car rattled more and more as time went on and unfortunately, the dealer did not seem to care about fixing it. Additionally, there were front suspension problems, moisture got behind the information display LED and it had to be replaced, and the check engine light came on during a u-turn. It's best to stay away from this one as it may cause some headaches.

Firstly, I must say that driving this car has been an absolute blast! However, I have had some issues with it, which unfortunately have been quite costly. I purchased it three years ago, after it had been leased for three years, and during that time, I had to take it to the shop for repairs quite frequently, even while it was still under warranty. Unfortunately, the repairs have continued to add up, costing me between $600 and $1200 several times a year for the past three years. Regrettably, I have had to make the difficult decision to part ways with this car, which has resulted in a significant financial loss. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would strongly advise you to reconsider. If you already own one and are experiencing similar issues, I would recommend getting rid of it as soon as possible, as the cost of repairs can quickly become unmanageable.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that in the past 2 years, the car has had to be towed twice. The first time was due to a corroded cable, and the second time was because the ignition cassette kept shorting out the fuses. I hope this information helps!
