Common 2002 Saab 9-3 problems

The Saab 9-3, particularly the 2002 model, has several common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the anti-lock brake system (ABS) and traction control system. These systems share the same module in the Saab 9-3, and many owners have reported persistent ABS and traction control light problems. The root cause of this issue is often corroded wire harness connectors in the front wheel sensors, which can prevent the traction control module from accurately detecting wheel speed. Failure of the ABS and traction control systems can lead to a complete loss of control on slippery or uneven roads, making it crucial to replace both parts to restore the braking system.

Another common problem with the Saab 9-3 is related to the bulkhead, which is caused by a mounting system that connects this part to the steering rack. When the wheel is turned to its full potential, a clicking noise may be heard, indicating a problem with the bulkhead. This issue can also result in vague and slightly unresponsive steering, which should be avoided.

Cooler oil leaks are another well-known issue with the Saab 9-3. These leaks can occur between the lubrication and cooling systems due to the chain, leading to oil contamination in the coolant. This issue is one of the more expensive ones to fix and should be carefully considered before purchasing a used Saab 9-3.

The Saab 9-3 convertible is a good buy that holds its value well, but it's essential to ensure that the hood is in good working order before purchasing. Raise and lower the hood a couple of times to ensure it's functioning correctly, and scour the rips and damage to ensure it's in good condition.

Interior heating is another common issue with the Saab 9-3, but it's not related to the air conditioning unit itself. Instead, structural problems with the dial controls and knobs can cause the heating system to malfunction, with the knobs easily cracking off and splitting. Fortunately, this issue is relatively inexpensive to repair, costing less than £10 each, so it shouldn't deter potential buyers.

The oil sludge issue is another problem that can affect petrol-powered Saab 9-3s

. If the previous owner has not kept up with regular services or has used thicker oil than is stipulated, the engine may experience costly problems. It's essential to check the service history to ensure that the owner has been on the ball before purchasing a used Saab 9-3.

Strut mounts can also be a problem in the Saab 9-3, causing grinding noises and squeaks, particularly as the car is going around corners

. This issue is often caused by the mounts and bearings at the top of the McPherson struts in the suspension system.

In summary, the Saab 9-3 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including ABS and traction control issues, bulkhead problems, cooler oil leaks, hood issues in convertible models, heating system problems, oil sludge issues in petrol-powered models, and strut mount problems. It's essential to thoroughly inspect any used Saab 9-3 before purchasing and to ensure that it has a full service history.

What is the most common problem with the Saab 9-3?

Many owners have complained about engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC). Saab vehicles primarily use a DIC system, with ignition coils that directly go on top of the spark plugs. If there's a problem with the DIC, the engine may crank but not start.

Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.

Negative 2002 Saab 9-3 car reviews

  1. Hayley Nader 2025-01-07

The '02 Saab 9-3 that I purchased had a few issues right after I drove it off the lot. However, I was able to address each problem as it came up, including fixing the front right wheel bearing, replacing the right headlight twice, repairing the heating coil, and restoring the air conditioning. Although the car stopped on the expressway three months later due to a faulty fuel pump, I was able to get it fixed and it has been running smoothly since. I did have to replace a few parts, such as the starter, left wheel bearing, control arm & ball joints on drivers side, CV Shaft, Spring Coil Sensor for Check Engine light, Brake Pads & Rotors, but I was able to handle each issue with confidence. Although there is still a starting issue that no one has been able to diagnose, I remain optimistic that it will be resolved soon.

  2. Arnaldo Wehner 2024-08-28

The car definitely falls short in its structural rigidity, especially in the convertible model. As a result, driving on bumpy roads can be quite uncomfortable. In fact, I feel more comfortable skiing on bumps than riding in the Saab convertible. Additionally, the interior setting can become annoying quite quickly. There is no central lock, and the remote car key only works from about three feet away from the car. It's funny that many Saab owners stick the key to their chin to make the door open or lock from ten to twenty feet away from the car. Having said all of this, I am planning to sell this car this spring and buy another German or even a Japanese car.

  3. Mohammad Mayer 2024-08-18

I recently purchased this vehicle used with only 32K miles on it. I am the second owner, and the previous owner was the first. Since I have owned the vehicle, I have had to replace the brakes and rotors, fix the fuel pump, and flush the transmission (which was at 50K miles). Unfortunately, I recently experienced an issue where the hazards were flashing and I was unable to turn them off. I tried everything I could think of, including checking the fuses, but nothing worked. I ended up taking the car to a SAAB recommended mechanic near my home, and the repair cost was quite high. The issue turned out to be electrical and related to the computer board. Despite this experience, I still enjoy driving my SAAB and appreciate its unique features.

  4. Zion Olson 2024-07-23

Although I appreciate the ride and performance, I am disappointed with the interior fit and finish. The interior clunks and rattles have been seriously annoying since delivery. The noise level is higher than what I expected from a supposed quality vehicle that cost $27k.

Positive 2002 Saab 9-3 car reviews

  1. Rasheed Blanda 2025-01-07

I've owned about 4 Saab 9-3s as I move a lot and sell my car before every move. I always buy these because they are one hundred percent reliable and fast. Recently, I drove my 2002 9-3 from WA to ID and back, and I got 35mpg on the highway for real, no joke! So, I think the average fuel economy should be changed on here. When driving in the city and using the turbo all day, you only get 25 mpg (lowest I've seen). Overall, I give this car a 9 out of 10. The only brand I like better than Saab is Lexus!

  2. Sven Lesch 2024-11-27

When you're in the market for an entry level luxury sedan, it's important to consider all your options. I personally looked at several vehicles, including BMW and Volvo, but ultimately chose the Saab after taking it for a test drive. I must warn you though, if you're on a tight budget, it's probably best to avoid test driving the Saab altogether. It's hard to resist its charm and you might end up driving away with it, regardless of your budget! One thing that surprised me about the Saab is its impressive speed despite having relatively low horsepower.

  3. Horacio White 2024-11-25

Before purchasing the 9-3, I considered the Volvo V40, the Benz Coupe, the BMW325, and Audi A4. However, after the test drive, I decided to purchase the 9-3. It has loads of power and acceleration. Although the top end power was a little low, how often do you really get into triple digits? As someone who grew up with GTi's in the 80s and 90s, I can confidently say that this car is a well-qualified replacement.

  4. Enid Windler 2024-11-24

Your new 9-3 Convertible sounds like a blast to drive! It's amazing how much fun a car can be until you test drive one. The acceleration is so smooth, it feels like you're flying a jet! The quality leather coachworks are top-notch, and I'm glad you settled on the automatic with the 'S' mode button on the shifter. You can definitely sense the aircraft heritage of these fine automobiles. It's great to see more people discovering the quality and value of these cars!

Out of all the cars we looked at, including Nissans (Altima and Maxima), Toyotas (Camry and Corolla SE), Fords, Mini, and Volvos, we found that the Saab was the best fit for us. The reason being that they offered us a great lease deal and we didn't have to deal with all the confusing option packages. The 9-3 Turbo has everything you need right out of the gate. It's fast, nice-looking (midnight blue), functional (OnStar), luxurious (Leather, Power Everything, Sunroof), and reliable. I drive on the highway all day and this car is a joy at high speeds. At night, the dashboard lights are easy on the eyes.
