The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-04-03
  • VIN: 1GKEL19W0SB
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: WHEN RIGHT FRONT TORSION BAR ON ALL WHEEL DRIVE MINIVAN WAS REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO, VAN BEGAN EXHIBITING UNSTABLE, EXTREMELY SENSITIVE, AND DANGEROUS HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. REPLACEMENT OF TIRES, TWO SETS OF SHOCK ABSORBERS, AND MULTIPLE REALIGNMENTS AT MY EXPENSE DID NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. IF I HAD NEEDED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY EVASIVE MANEUVER UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, MY VAN WOULD VERY LIKELY HAVE ROLLED OVER. WHEN LEFT FRONT TORSION BAR WAS REPLACED THIS WEEK, I WAS INFORMED THAT GM HAD DEVELOPED A NEW TORSION BAR DESIGN, AND THAT I WAS NOW REQUIRED TO REPLACE BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT BARS IF EITHER FAILED. THIS DUAL REPLACEMENT FINALLY SOLVED MY HANDLING PROBLEMS. THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE SUCH DEFECTIVE PARTS FREE WHEN THEY ENDANGER PASSENGERS! I HAVE PAID FOR REPLACING THREE DEFECTIVE TORSION BARS OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD. *JB

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-04-10

WAS TAKEN TO DEALER IN APRIL 2003, COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG IN THEIR DIAGNOSTICS, SYMPTOMS HAVE SLOWLY GOTTEN WORSE OVER TIME. SUSPECT LATENT DEFECT IN FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM CAUSING A FUEL LEAK INSIDE OF ENGINE (INTAKE MANIFOLD). SINCE A DLEALER CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS, THIS IS AN OBVIOUS EMISSIONS CONTROL DEFECT AS WELL AS A POTENTIAL SAFETY DEFECT. THIS WOULD AFFECT ALL VEHICLES WITH THIS ENGINE, THIS DEFECT IS NOT SPECIFIC TO THIS MODEL.

Negative 1995 Gmc Safari car reviews

  1. Reece Bruen 2024-06-12

I have driven all over the States and Canada without any issues. Despite having driven 450000 km so far, the car has proven to be reliable. Although the rocker panels have rusted out and the back door handle has disintegrated, these are minor issues that do not affect the car's performance. While replacing the spark plugs can be challenging, it is a small price to pay for the pleasure of driving this car. Overall, I am confident in the car's durability and will continue to drive it for as long as possible.

  2. Jaren Halvorson 2024-05-06

I have experienced several issues with this vehicle since its purchase. Unfortunately, it broke down during my vacation, causing inconvenience. Despite purchasing two separate warranties, I have spent over $1000.00 on repairs within six months. Regrettably, my experience with Mount Clemens Dodge has been unsatisfactory, and I cannot recommend them. I believe that improvements are necessary in their service and honesty.

Generally nice - but: there was a secret GMC warranty on the paint which literally flake off after six years. GM denied responsibility claiming their secret warranty had expired and if the dealer didn't tell the customer (me) - too bad! The upshot - had to have the vehicle painted privately at my expense and now have EXTENSIVE RUST - something else that should never happen in this era of vehicle. Mechanically the vehicle has been fair, the rear A/C is a disaster - be sure to close off the coolant lines to the rear A/C - the rear A/C is not needed and you will otherwise have to add new freon EVERY Summer.

We purchased the vehicle when it was only 14 months old and had 43000 miles on it. It held up well for about 18 months, but unfortunately, we have had a lot of issues with it since then. Despite being 10 years old, it has not rusted, which is a positive. However, we have had to replace two engines, two transmissions, two complete A/C systems (front and back), and have had to make numerous other costly repairs. In fact, about 6 months after we bought it, Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide listed this vehicle at the top of their list of VEHICLES TO AVOID - and they were right! By the way, the engine is quite difficult to work on. I hope this information helps.

This van is amazing! It has over 202,000 miles and is still going strong, with no rust. It has been driven all over the place, from Canada to Florida, North Carolina to Connecticut, NYC to New Mexico, Kansas to Texas, and everywhere in between. Has it ever broken down? I don't think so! It's no wonder why GM sells more cars than Ford and DaimChrysBenz.

Positive 1995 Gmc Safari car reviews

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1995 Safari. One of the things I love about it is that I can easily fit my 10-foot surfboard inside and still have room to lock the doors under the seats. It's also surprisingly peppy for a van! The rear AC and Dutch doors are really cool features, and the middle and rear seats make the cargo space super versatile. My girlfriend did mention that the shotgun seat doesn't have much foot room, but since I don't drive from there, it's never been an issue for me. Unfortunately, I did have some trouble with the fuel injection system at 80k miles, which was a bit pricey to fix at $1k, but it was definitely worth it. However, at 116k miles, the transmission died and the $2k to replace it just wasn't worth it, so I ended up trading it in.

We've had our GMC Safari for seven years and we still love it! The van is spacious and comfortable, although I do have one minor complaint about the space for passengers' feet in the front. On the plus side, I absolutely adore the built-in coolers in the back.

With a family of 6 that takes trips often, having enough room is essential. I'm glad to hear that the van has been extremely reliable.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. I've actually converted two astro/safari vans now, but unfortunately, they were both totalled out in wrecks. Despite that, I have to say that they were both perfect for me and my family. I had a TV/VCR set up for my kids and we never had any major problems with either of them. The 4.3 v6 engine was really reliable and had plenty of power, even though it only got about 17mpg. I bought the first one with 100k miles on it and it had 140k when it was wrecked. The second one I bought had 70k miles on it and I drove it until it had 111k miles. I just love these vans! :)

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with the GMC Safari. I wrote a review back on 07/12/02 and now, with over 260K miles on it, I can confidently say that it's still going strong! In fact, we loved it so much that we added a Suburban to our GMC family and it's been just as reliable. The Safari still looks great and I haven't had any issues with oil usage or power loss. I can't recommend GMC enough! Thank you for reading.
