Common Saab 9-3 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Saab 9-3, here is a detailed list of common problems associated with this car:
- Engine Coolant Loss: Many Saab 9-3s (1999 to 2010) experience engine coolant loss due to a porous engine block. Gas and contaminants present during the casting process lead to low coolant levels. Repair attempts like replacing head gaskets and water pumps have had varying success rates. Solutions may involve inspecting the engine block for repair or replacement.
- Loud Noises on Rough Roads: The front-wheel-drive design of the second-generation Saab 9-3 (2002 to 2011) puts strain on the front suspension, causing top mounts and bearings to fail between 35,000 to 185,000 miles. This issue results in loud noises when driving on rough roads and may require replacement of these components for improved driving comfort.
- ECU, Electric Windows, and Rattles: Some owners have reported problems with the engine's ECU, faults with electric windows, and various rattles and creaks in the Saab 9-3. These issues can impact the overall driving experience and comfort of the vehicle, requiring careful inspection and potential repairs to address them.
- Uneven Tyre Wear and Clutch/Gearbox Troubles: Watch out for uneven tyre wear, which could indicate misaligned suspension or worn tyres, especially in hotter versions that can wear out fronts quickly. Additionally, be cautious of clutch slip and gearbox troubles, as these can affect the performance and drivability of the Saab 9-3. Ensuring a full service history and checking for specific features like leather trim and a good stereo system can enhance the resale value of the car.
These common problems highlight areas where Saab 9-3 owners may encounter issues, emphasizing the importance of thorough inspections and regular maintenance to address these concerns effectively.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-01
- VIN: YS3DD58H7Y2
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The driver's side, side air bag deployed spontaneously. There was no apparent reason or cause, ie no side impact of any kind, no door slamming or other provocation. The car was parked in a garage for six hours before I sat in the car, closed the door, then BLAM! Temperature was moderate, where as the car is often parked on a city street in direct sun. Air bag deployment was a loud bang followed by smoke from an explosive, and a sting on my neck and shoulder where the bag hit me. Bits of foam from the seat interior, where the air bag was located, blew around the car interior. I suffered temporary hearing loss in my left ear due to the loud bang. I was also quite startled. No other people were at risk. No other air bags have deployed since I've owned the car, approx. 20 yrs., purchased used. I will consult an authorized repair shop, insurance agent, and a dealer service center for more info. A Saab dealer service center told me a new replacement air bag would be available from Sweden at a cost of $700. That would be in addition to the cost of repairing the seat, door frame panel, and other items. There were no prior dash board or related fault code messages. The car has never been in an accident or impacted in any way to the best of my knowledge (I saw a Carfax report at purchase).

- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I left my home with my daughter in the afternoon to go to the bank and hardware store. I drove to the bank to make a deposit. We had to wait for quite awhile in the drive-through line at the bank, so I turned off my engine a couple of times rather than having the car idle. After making the deposit at the bank, I pulled out of the bank lot and began driving to the hardware store. I had driven for about two minutes and was driving along at approximately 25-30 miles an hour, and suddenly there was a terrible explosion at my left ear and massive pain in my left arm. I thought the car had been shot at and my arm hit. I was terrified we were still being shot at and looked at my daughter whose hands were over her ears. I could tell by that time that I was not bleeding and so was worried that the bullet had hit her. I could hear only faintly out of my left ear. There was smoke and the smell of an explosion. I could see by this time that an airbag had come out of my driver's seat and thought that it had been hit too. My daughter told me she was o.k. and to pull the car over so that we could see what had happened. I was shaking with fear and pain in my arm but finally calmed down enough to park the car and get out to see what had happened. It became clear that the car had not been shot at and that the driver's side seat airbag had simply spontaneously exploded without any warning whatsoever. The driver's seat side seam was completely ripped, multiple pieces of seat foam were lying about, and the air bag in the seat was out and ripped. The seat was still smoking. Luckily I had had my window completely down, or the explosion would have been louder in the car, and my arm and left side could have been more badly injured. I called my longtime Saab repairman who told me that what happened to me was extremely rare. He said I would need a new seat and that the computer system would need to be reset for the airbag system to work again. Insurance will examine soon. I may try GM too.

The Viggen is a joy to drive, but it's important to be mindful of gear selection due to turbo lag that can catch the unwary off guard. It's worth noting that the wheels can be easily bent, so it's important to take care when driving. Unfortunately, they are also expensive to replace, and in my experience, I've had to replace 4 wheels in just 20,000 miles of city driving. If you do decide to buy a Viggen, it's highly recommended to invest in plastic impact covers for the fog lights and headlights. This is because it can cost more to replace a single headlight than the entire windshield. Despite these considerations, the Viggen is a joy to drive and offers great performance. However, it does require a skilled driver to handle it properly. Fortunately, it doesn't suffer too much from torque-steer, but it does require a light touch when accelerating hard.

I'm so glad to hear that you absolutely love your car! It's great to hear that it has been a reliable daily driver for you for the past two years. The performance of the 2.8T 6 cyl engine paired with the manual 6 speed sounds like a dream. It's wonderful that the car handles so well in the corners and that the seats keep you comfortable. Plus, the fact that you're getting better gas mileage than expected is a bonus! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us.

This car has been excellent so far, although not perfect. As the first new car I bought for myself out of college, I wanted something that would last me for years, get good gas mileage, and be fun to drive. The gas mileage is pretty good, averaging about 28 mpg in the winter. The styling is nice, but the interior is a little bland. My biggest complaint would have to be the brakes. I had to replace them far too early in my opinion, and was told that Saab had changed the braking ratio without changing the brakes. Not cool. The top speed in first gear is also quite low, with little oomph until 2nd. Otherwise, I have not experienced any of the problems others have had, such as electrical and whatnot.

I have been a Volvo driver since I started driving and buying cars. This is actually the first non-Volvo I have owned, although I have driven dozens of other cars. I can say without hesitation that this is one of the better cars I've driven. The quality and safety are similar or superior to the pre-Ford Volvos. I like this car more than I even expected when I bought it. The unique styling adds to the fun in my book.

The Saab is a great choice for a weekend driver, offering a classy and affordable option for those seeking the wind in their hair feeling. While the car can get expensive, I find that doing my own maintenance work on brakes, filters, oil, plugs, and belts helps keep costs down. The car itself is solid, with tight steering and a quiet cloth top. The 2.0 turbo engine provides plenty of punch and great MPG. Not only is the car a looker, but it's also easy to park and gets plenty of compliments. With the top down, the trunk has enough space for a long weekend's worth of luggage. The 2008 model has good reliability reviews, and I've had no issues with mine even after 98,000 miles. The Saab is perfect for those who want a stylish car that gets attention and is easy to take care of. While there have been some recall notices, they were promptly repaired by my local dealer. I'm looking forward to enjoying the ride this summer and taking spur-of-the-moment trips with guests in the back seat. The only downside is that the Bluetooth feature requires OnStar, which can be inconvenient since GM no longer services Saab. It's great to hear that the Saab is still running well in 2018! Even though the performance of the vehicle isn't a crucial factor for you, it's always nice to have a reliable car for a weekend jaunt. Plus, it's always a bonus to receive compliments, especially when driving with the top down!

Let me start by saying that the car is an absolute joy to drive. Having owned Mercedes, Lexus, Honda, and older Saabs in the past, I can confidently say that this car is the most fun to drive and more comfortable than most of my friends' cars (they drive BMWs, Mercedes, and Lexus). However, I have had some issues with the car in the less than four months that I have owned it. It is going in for warranty work for the seventh time this week due to various build problems such as weather stripping, windows off tracks, A/C issues, and leather cracks. I have spent over 24 days in the shop. While I have put 6000 miles on it, I would recommend having a secondary source of transportation as this car may not be the most reliable option.

Although I initially had high hopes for this car, my experience with it has been less than satisfactory. Despite being fun to drive, it has not lived up to my expectations of a luxury vehicle. In just one year, I have spent over $1500 on repairs for a car that is only 6 years old and has less than 60K miles. I have had to replace the alternator, exhaust pipe, headliner clips, headlights (which always seem to be dim and need replacing every 3 months), and the digital display is fading. Additionally, the dash is cracked, the cupholder broke off, there is an irritating squealing noise from the AC fan, a humming sound from the glove box, and the roof channels rainwater into my lap. The emblems are also faded. Given the high payments, I am understandably disappointed. It is essential to have an extended warranty with this car.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Saab. While it's a great looking car, I've had some issues with the electrical system, such as the sunroof, Saab infotainment, and security system. Unfortunately, I recently had to replace my seatbelt for $675, which was a bit of a shock. As much as I love the look of the car, these little issues have made it difficult for me to consider purchasing another Saab in the future.

I read a comment in a review forum about the future of Saab, suggesting that the brand should position itself as the $25K European sports sedan. Regardless of whether this is where Saab is headed or not, I believe it would be a great way to position this model. While it may not have the best interior compared to, say, an Audi A4 (which was my previous car), the engine may not be sublime, and the handling may only be okay (although the AWD version helps considerably, I bought the FWD version), I have no major complaints after driving over 2,000 miles. It's a good all-around performer and, while it may not excel in any particular automotive review category, it does enough to satisfy and bring the occasional smile.

The 2000 Saab convertible was purchased by me primarily for its safety features and reliability reputation. However, I have unfortunately experienced multiple breakdowns in this car, including issues with the DI cassette, seat belt, water pump, and AC compressor. Despite regular maintenance, these problems have persisted and have caused me to lose confidence in the car's ability to get me to my destination safely. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a Saab and will not be buying another one in the future.
