Common 1999 Saab 9-3 problems

The Saab 9-3, produced from 1998 to 2011, is known for its superb reliability, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most widely reported issues for the Saab 9-3, particularly for the 1999 model.

  • Bulkhead Issues: When out on the road, try full lock steering movements. If you hear a clicking noise when the wheel is turned to its full potential, it could indicate a problem with the bulkhead. This issue is caused by a mounting system that connects the bulkhead to the steering rack. Vague and slightly unresponsive steering is another tell-tale sign of this problem. It's recommended to avoid any vehicle exhibiting these symptoms.
  • Cooler Oil Leaks: Get under the hood and check your potential purchase's coolant for signs of oil contamination. There is a well-known issue with Saab 9-3s where leaks can occur between the lubrication and cooling systems due to the chain. This issue is one of the more expensive on the list to fix and should make you think twice about purchasing a vehicle with this problem.
  • Interior Heating Issues: Believe it or not, one of the most common issues with the Saab 9-3 is with the heating system. However, it's not deep faults within the air conditioning unit but rather structural problems with the dial controls and knobs. These are known to easily crack off and split. Fortunately, they cost less than £10 each to repair, so don't let the heating controls, or lack thereof, put you off a purchase.
  • Engine Coolant Loss and No Leak Noted: This issue has been reported by 115 people, making it one of the most common problems with the Saab 9-3.
  • Grinding Noises in Suspension System: Listen out for a grinding noise on your test drive, particularly as you're going round corners. The likely culprit in this scenario is the mounts and bearings at the top of the McPherson struts in the suspension system.

While these issues are common, it's important to note that the Saab 9-3 is generally a reliable car, especially when well-maintained. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help prevent or address these problems, ensuring the longevity and performance of your Saab 9-3.

1999 Saab 9-3 engine

What is the most common problem with the Saab 9-3?

Many owners have complained about engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC). Saab vehicles primarily use a DIC system, with ignition coils that directly go on top of the spark plugs. If there's a problem with the DIC, the engine may crank but not start.

What is the most reliable engine in the Saab 9-3?

Saab 9-3 Saloon engines, drive and performance

Eight-valve single-turbo models (120hp TiD) are generally considered the most reliable, with the 130, 160 and 180hp later twin-turbo 16-valve variants the next choice.

Are old Saabs good cars?

Find a good example and Saabs make famously great used cars; they are generally well priced, well equipped and reliable. The firm was declared bankrupt in 2012, so any used models on the market are now generally old and at the budget end of the spectrum.

What is the top speed of a 1999 Saab 9-3 Turbo?

With a 7.3-second sprint to 62 mph and a top speed of 140, the old 9-3 certainly isn't fast by modern standards. But that wasn't too shabby back at the turn of the century, and it's not to shabby now, either.

Negative 1999 Saab 9-3 car reviews

  1. Titus Mayer 2024-08-20

It seems clear that this is a GM vehicle. While I considered Audi and BMW, I ultimately chose Saab due to its lower price point. However, after experiencing two breakdowns on the interstate and dealing with expensive repair bills, I now realize that an Audi or BMW would have been a better investment. Additionally, I was involved in a head-on collision with a truck going 30 mph and the Saab's airbags failed to deploy, which is a known issue with this model. There have also been problems with the soft top leaking, fuel pump, and power top. It may be wise to consider other options or ensure that you have AAA coverage.

When considering purchasing this car, it is important to have all records for repairs and maintenance. Without documentation, it can be difficult to determine the true condition of the vehicle. I would recommend having a reputable mechanic review the car before making a purchase. While this car has a good reputation, it is important to note that routine maintenance is crucial. Unfortunately, I purchased this car without documentation and have spent nearly $1500 in the past year on repairs that could have been avoided. Despite these challenges, I was fortunate to find a good mechanic. Overall, it is important to carefully consider all factors before making a purchase.

Here is my SaabStory... I bought this car because my sister had a 1985 900 for 10 years which was bullet proof. Despite some initial concerns, I was drawn to this 9-3 because of its great styling, good performance, and good value. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the car since purchasing it with 30K on it. However, Saab and their dealers have been responsive in addressing the problems. Although it has required some maintenance, I am confident that with the right care, this car will continue to serve me well. This car looked to be in perfect condition and I am excited to see where it takes me next!

  4. Gordon Anderson 2024-06-02

Although this car is unique and generally fun to drive, SAAB did not get everything right. Unfortunately, there is very annoying turbo lag which makes normal city driving tedious. Additionally, the interior finish is poor and the cup holders don't work. The nobs and controls tend to come off and visibility is not good. Furthermore, the suspension is very soft for a car that pretends to be high performance. Therefore, I would not recommend this car. However, don't just take my word for it, take a look at the depreciation that these cars suffer! We bought ours for $28k in 1998 and it is now worth $11k as per Blue Book in a private party transaction. In any case, you may want to take advantage of the lease offers.

  5. Damon Bartoletti 2024-03-29

I purchased a 1999 Saab 93SE two months ago. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car such as the A/C needing to be charged three times and a sulfur smell from the tailpipe at times. Additionally, the engine has been leaking coolant and oil from the head gasket, the power antenna no longer goes down all the way, and the passenger side headlight wiper is coming loose. The car also has a few interior rattles and creaks. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved and I am still enjoying the car. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you found the perfect car for your bicycle races! It sounds like you made a great choice with this car - it's fast, fuel-efficient, comfortable, and has plenty of space for your bikes. What's even better is that it's been super reliable for you, with only a few minor fixes needed over the years. It's always great to hear about a car that can stand the test of time! And it's pretty funny that BMW drivers try to race your wife in it - they must not know what they're up against with that turbo! :)

I bought my 1999 Saab used with high mileage (113,000 miles) in 2007 when my Audi broke down. Since then, I have only had to replace the idler pulley and belt, which cost $320.00 (including towing). My mechanic was not a Saab expert, and it was nearing the end of my third year of ownership. I have been doing regular maintenance on it, and about a month ago, a stolen car hit my mother's parked Volvo at 40+ mph, causing it to hit my Saab that was parked about 1 foot in front of it. Although my mother's Volvo was totaled, my Saab only sustained $43.00 in damage and drove away from the accident. I would highly recommend this car to anyone! In fact, my mother is currently looking for one.

I recently purchased my Certified Pre-Owned Saab convertible after much research into pre-owned luxury convertible options. The Saab 9-3 S has the right mix of performance, safety, style, fun factor, and value. Body rattles over rough pavement are minimized, especially considering this car is a convertible. Seats 4 adults very comfortably. Even I (6'3

Probably the best car I've ever owned! As someone who's been in the car business for over 27 years, I can say that this car really impressed me. It sat on my lot for nearly two weeks, but one day I got in and was blown away. After taking it for a 20-minute drive, I knew I had to have it. I've since put in all new gas shocks, ceramic brakes, and mobile one full synthetic oil. Needless to say, I'm keeping it because I absolutely love it!

I used to own a 1991 Saab 900 and absolutely loved it. However, I find that the 9-3 hatch is not as versatile as other hatchbacks on the market, including the classic 900. The loading area is bottlenecked by a large ridge, making it difficult to fit all of my belongings. On the bright side, the mid-range power is impressive and it makes for a great highway car, although it may not be the best for city driving. I do find the turbo lag to be a bit ridiculous, even as someone experienced with manual transmissions. Additionally, the car feels overpowered for the suspension when taking sharp turns. Overall, I would recommend giving Saab and other brands a thorough test drive before making a purchase. However, if you can find a good deal outside of the dealership, it could be a quirky and worthwhile buy.
