2019 Gmc Terrain problems
The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.
First generation (2010)
The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.
The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

- VIN: 3GKALWEU1KL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I bought a car from Boone Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in North Carolina on [XXX] and by [XXX] my engine was out before I purchase my car I made sure they serviced my vehicle at a GMC Dealership and there's a warranty on the service of my engine I did not buy the warranty on my car because they couldn't guarantee that the warranty transferred over to West Virginia shop's and that they would cover issues they stated they could deny service cuz it was out of state. So my car went to Moses Cadillac GMC in downtown Charleston on [XXX] they literally just randomly dropped it back off to me two Wednesdays ago. I've been working with GMC to try to purchase a new vehicle and get mine bought back, but it's been a whole process but I'm trying to work with Moses so I can purchase a new vehicle but they won't call me back and i feel like its because they know something is defective. The engine had a Regen done before i purchased it and now all of a sudden the cars engine is Done. Now when this happened the battery got so hot my car started smoking we originally thought it was the starter. Because when it stopped working we were at a Toll booth and pressed the break and the stop start kicked the engine off and it never came back on. Even now if you try to start it the battery gets hot and the starter smokes. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
- VIN: 3GKALMEV5KL
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My transmission keeps sticking when I shift into drive or reverse. Just a couple of days ago, it happened the worst it has ever done before. I shifted into reverse and my vehicle was completely stopped when I shifted. I began to let off of the brakes and gently push the accelerator to start moving back, my vehicle then punched itself into reverse. I felt after that incident, something had to have been damaged. I’m almost afraid to drive my vehicle after that. When my vehicle punched itself into reverse, I was literally jolted towards the steering wheel and thankfully my seatbelt caught me. Incidents with the the shifting into drive or reverse have happened before, but never nearly as intense. About a year ago, I brought my vehicle in to my local GMC Dealership for a concern with my transmission shifting weirdly and holding itself in gear at an unnecessarily high RPM speed. The technician stated to me, “with these 9-speeds, they tend to get confused at various speeds”. I asked him to elaborate and he could not. These issues have now gotten worse. With my suspension, every turn I take, I get a kreaking sound from my front driver side wheel well. It sounds as if my tire if going to break off. I’ve done visual inspections and nothing out of the ordinary is noticeable to the eye. My vehicle is a 2019 with less than 40,000 miles on it. I should not be having all of these issues. I’m genuinely concerned for my safety.

- Summary: My daughter was driving her 2019 GMC Terrain at 15 - 20mph when she suddenly lost her brakes. Fortunately she had just turned into a new housing development where the road ended into an empty field. This could have been catastrophic for her & other citizens on the road. The following morning she would have been heading to work on a highway with heavy traffic with a posted speed limit of 65mph. We towed the vehicle home & after some investigating I found a vacuum pump failure. This vacuum pump broke apart internally sending chunks & shards of metal into her valve train. This issue is mentioned several times in Terrain forums & someone needs to address this issue before it becomes a fatality.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-28
- VIN: 3GKALTEV8KL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: Vaccumm pump failed and broke metal shavings off into engine resulting in “engine failure”. I was driving on the highway with my 6 year old child in back seat, car completely shut down and shot a “reduced engine power” message while on a busy on ramp heading onto highway. This created an extremely dangerous situation for myself and my child as many cars almost smashed into the vehicle. I’ve seen many other complaints of this happening, the same exact parts and issue happened to the Chevy Equinox which resulted in a recall but they have yet to recall the Terrain, which is having the exact same issue. I am a single mother, with 20k still on my loan. This mistake made by gmc has now costed me over 5,000$ out of pocket for something that is not my fault and completely out of my control. Even after all of the money poured into this repair, I still feel unsafe in my own vehicle as there is no guarantee this issue will not happen again. I’ve kept up on all oil changes and maintenance of my vehicle. The issue was confirmed by a GMC mechanic which cost 500$ out of pocket for diagnosis as well. I also had to spend 1000$ on a rental out of pocket because of this. I have seen many others complaints of the same issue happening to their GMC terrain and am appalled no recall has been discussed after the reaccuring issue. I should not be having to pay out of pocket for an issue GMC has yet to fix or issue a recall on. I had to miss days of work, and it really was a huge inconvenience. I do not feel safe in my own vehicle even after the repair, cause I have no guarantee this won’t just happen all over again.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-03
- VIN: 3GKALVEV6KL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I had just gotten off the highway and had gone less than a mile on a 35 mph road when the brakes acted like the antilock brakes came on for a brief second then the brake pedal became very hard to push. This resulted in me having a difficult time stopping the vehicle. The service brake light also came on.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
- VIN: 3GKALVEV9KL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on 95, I lost all engine and power breaks with no warning. A message came up on my dash stating that I had lost engine power. Fortunately an exit was up ahead so I was able to get there and coast down the ramp. I attempted to make a right turn to get out of the way but ran out of momentum. Dealership stated my vacuum break pump failed and went into the cam shaft. They had to replace those and the solenoid actuator and value. They also conducted an oil change. I received it back yesterday, started the car today and the check engine light was on. They found more debris and replaced another point and said if the light comes on again it's the timing chains in the engine. I went out leave and the check engine light was on. They are now keeping it to repair the timing chains. I am fighting with GM to cover the expenses since I see this is an issue in previous models/years of GMC and Chevy vehicles.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

- VIN: 3GKALPEV4KL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: It began with showing "Service Brake Assist" for about 2 weeks + then on Dec 18th 2023 around 10:30 as my fiancé was stopped at a stoplight and all of sudden when the light turned green she attempted to continue forward as traffic started to move only to stall stalled out before any movement could be achieve the battery was reading severely depleted and the vehicle would not function at all she was stuck in Drive and could not put the vehicle in neutral or even park to even try to restart the vehicle, she could not even turn the steering wheel, roll down the windows, open the door, or anything. the only thing she was able to accomplish was opening the hood so an officer that had arrived at this time could give her a jump, The officer also proceeded to leave the negative cable on the battery terminal and disconnected the Positive cable from the battery terminal which would have indicated a bad starter or depleted battery when the positive cable had been removed, which was not the case. she continued to where her appointment was and that is where i met her and took over vehicle to transport it home, driving with hazards on. I arrived at the house with no incident. then at 4:45pm on the evening of 12/18/2023 while at the stoplight I had a similar issue occurred as i was going from a stationary position to a forward slowly accelerated speed gaining momentum where the vehicle wanted to stall out while i was stopped at a stoplight attempting to proceed forward. and then at around 10:20 pm while stopped at a stop sign a similar issue occurred as i was going from a stationary position to a forward slowly accelerated speed gaining momentum attempting to proceed forward. On Dec 19th 2023 around 10:00 am I test started the car by remote and it started up and then i turned it off, now it is showing that the battery is completely depleted at 1:26 pm
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-14
- VIN: 3GKALTEV6KL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: For the third time, the brake booster has failed on our GMC Terrain. We had the first replaced with an OEM part. That booster failed after 2 weeks. A second OEM brake booster was installed. That one lasted about a year until it failed as well. This time we were traveling down the interstate and interstate speeds. There were no indications of an issue until trying to slow down when attempting to exit the interstate. Luckily it was a long ramp and there was not much traffic as I had to push extremely hard to slow down the vehicle. Knowing immediately what had happened, we noticed a GMC dealership was just down the road and safely made it. We left the vehicle at the dealership and rented a car to continue our vacation. We are now being told that not only did the brake booster fail, but the components entered the engine and caused major damage. The suggested repair is a full engine replacement. This is unacceptable for an issue that GMC has know about and has had recalls for on other years of their vehicles. Not only could my family have been severely injured, or worse, we are not financially able to repair the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-05
- VIN: 3GKALTEV0KL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There are 3 recalls and one open on this car I was sold by a dealership, none of them ever fixed. I drive to work in the highway the car never had any warning light on but the RPMS would occasionally go up for no reason. I told the dealership the second day that it had issues , they took it and say they fixed the back brakes but did nothing about the engine or transmission whatsoever ever. This was the beginning of may and it was in the shop two weeks. I called my lender to even get out of the loan and a saleswoman even tried assisting me into talking her manager out of the loan because of all the issues. Fast foreword to august I had just gotten a new job and was driving in the night after hearing that ticking or slight knocking noise and I went to my job and as i tried to park the brakes went completely stiff on me! I could not get the car to slow down I had to weave through other cars and people in till it finally coasted to a stop. So I put it in park and immediately after the check engine light came on. I tried to start it and it would start , putter and turn off over and over. I had to end up calling OnStar to have a diagnosis which she said something like solenoid and something being clogged. So it was towed to my residence and before i could get it towed to s shop they lender came and repossessed it because I had missed payments due to losing my job unexpectedly, completely unexpectedly. I told the lender of the problem and the unfortunate troubles I was having to pay for the car but I had just landed a job and could start payment but she didn’t care. She said she is going to tow it . I had my friends dad who is a licensed mechanic look at it before it was towed and he said the car was trash , basically a lemon that there was oil clogged and instead of passing through like it’s supposed to do it being pushed the opposite way and ending up in other reservoirs it shouldn’t be in. I obviously didn’t do that type of damage oil and trans problems I was scammed
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-22
- VIN: 3GKALPEV9KL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 2019 gmc terrain with 45000 miles, regular maintenance performed. Driving on highway 70mps brakes failed with no warning. No issues with brakes or lights coming on up to this point. Brake pedal became stiff very minimal brake working lights began flashing on dash stating "service brake assist". Barely made it off the highway without a catastrophic Collison. Took car in states brake vacuum pump completely failed. Apparently there are many models of gmc/chevy that were recalled and have known issues with the brake vacuum pump. Not sure why the terrain is not included. It needs to be, this was a very dangerous situation. I had children in the car and was very scary! 600$ to repair, and from reading other reviews the pumps are breaking often, sometimes ruining engines. Gmc stand behind your product and fix this!

I've been a fan of GMC SUVs and trucks my whole life, and this is my second Terrain, but my first diesel. I'm absolutely loving the mileage - 45+ on the highway and 32+ around town! I have the SLE with the driver alert and sun and sound package, and it's so easy to see out of and drive. I also have a 19 Acadia SLT and a 17 Sierra Denali Crew Cab Standard Bed, and my wife and I enjoy driving all of them. Each vehicle has its own strengths, and the Terrain is an excellent highway cruiser. If you're driving around town all the time, I wouldn't recommend a diesel, but for everything else, it's perfect. I love everything about this SUV, and I like it even more than my 13 Terrain. It's great that all the controls are the same as in my other GMC vehicles. The only issue I had was with the sunroof, but they fixed it with a new motor and track, and it works great now. The Terrain handles and drives great on all types of roads. I'm so glad I got the diesel because they made me an offer I couldn't refuse - $14,000 off MSRP! The push-button gears are easy to use, and you can override the auto start-stop by selecting the highest gear (6th). Alternatively, you can install a powered subwoofer under the back seat, which pulls enough power that the auto start-stop won't engage. I updated this review in November 2021, and everything is still going great. This will be my last review update because I'm selling it to my son. He's been using it and likes it so much that he asked to buy it from me. I'm only selling it because my son wants and needs it. I wish they still made them, but I'll replace it with a 2017 Denali with the 6-cylinder engine.

If you're looking for a 4cyl with great gas mileage and pick up, the 2LT is the one to get. In my experience, my Terrain rides better than the Toyota 4Runner and Mazda CX7. Additionally, the leather seats are better than the leather I had in my Buick.

I recently purchased a 2019 Denali with only 17000 miles on it, and I must say, it's awesome! Initially, I was hesitant due to mixed reviews, but upon closer inspection, I realized that those reviews were for all years and models. After narrowing my search to the 2019 Denali, which had great reviews, I made the purchase, and I am not disappointed at all. I noticed that many of the negative reviews were due to lack of maintenance on the owner's end. For example, one owner claimed that the brakes started scrubbing out of the blue, but it's more likely that they were not keeping up with maintenance. It's not fair to blame the car for the owner's neglect. Anyway, my rant is over. I highly recommend the 2019 Terrain Denali with the 2.0L turbo. Please test drive it for yourself because most of the negative reviews are written by people who are angry with GMC or the dealership for not fixing a car that they neglected to maintain. Don't just take my word for it, read the reviews and see if it doesn't sound like neglect on the owner's behalf.

This vehicle is everything I expected and more. I love the car! Even after 97505 miles, I still have a big smile on my face and have had no problems. As a daily driver, I have had to replace brakes, tires, and mud flaps due to my wife's parking issues.

The car drives smoothly. We're thrilled with the great upgrades and overall very happy.

If you manage to get the transmission to 9th gear at speeds lower than highway speeds, it drops down to 80 when gaining speed and will not shift back to 9th gear no matter what.

I leased a brand new 2019 AWD Terrain Denali with all packages, which had an MSRP of over $45k. Despite having less than 900 miles on it after 33 days, I have experienced several issues with the vehicle's quality and drivetrain. The SD Card Reader and Backup Camera System failed after driving only 14 miles from the dealer lot to my home. Although the dealer replaced the SD Card Reader, the Backup Camera is still on back-order with no estimated availability. Additionally, the vehicle slips and skips on wet pavement even in All Wheel Drive mode, which raises concerns about its performance in heavy rain or snow storms. The reduced size of the vehicle and uncomfortable seats make it difficult to seat five people comfortably or carry a significant amount of groceries in the trunk. The push/pull button shifter is also inconvenient, especially in rush-hour traffic. Due to these issues, I am disappointed with the quality of the vehicle and will not be purchasing a GMC again. I would advise others to consider alternative options.

Firstly, I must say that the design resembles a mini hearse, which may not be to everyone's taste. Additionally, the 2.4 engine lacks power and the push button transmission may not be suitable for some. Furthermore, the suspension can be quite rough, especially on the SLE model. However, it is important to note that these are just my personal opinions and experiences.

I recently had the opportunity to drive a 2019 GMC Terrain from a local dealership. Overall, I found the car to be well-designed with good performance and gas mileage (averaging around 24 mpg). However, I did notice a strong smell of glues, adhesives, and 'new car' scent that was quite overwhelming. During my first short 130-mile trip, I had to pull over several times just to catch my breath. Despite having the windows down for most of the trip, I still experienced headaches, light-headedness, and dizziness. Although some people may enjoy the smell of a new car, I would recommend test driving this vehicle for an extended period of time before making a purchase, especially if you have children. For $30k, there may be better options available for a daily driver.

I am renting this car on a trip. Unfortunately, this vehicle is missing some basic features such as a 'Blind Spot' warning on side mirrors, the lift back cannot be opened from inside the vehicle, and the front passenger seat does not recline. Additionally, it has been frustrating trying to get my iPhone 8Us to sync with the 'Add a phone' feature, which takes forever. The stereo sound system is also not up to par. However, I recently rented a Nissan Altima and it was fabulous! Based on my experience, I would not personally purchase this vehicle, but everyone's needs and preferences are different.
