Porsche Taycan 2020 problems
The Porsche Taycan is a battery electric luxury sports sedan and shooting brake car produced by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. The concept version of the Taycan, named the Porsche Mission E, debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show; the production Taycan was revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. As Porsche's first series production electric car, it is sold in several variants at different performance levels, and may spawn further derivatives in future models. More than 20,000 Taycans were delivered in 2020, its debut sale year, representing 7.4% of the total Porsche volume. A modified Taycan Turbo S is the current Formula E Safety car.
The name "Taycan" (/taɪ-dʒan/) is a reference to the steed on the coat of Arms of the city of Stuttgart, found on the Porsche crest. In Turkish, tay means colt or young horse, and can means lively. The "Turbo" name used in the higher trims is purely for branding purposes as the vehicles, being electrically powered, do not actually have turbochargers. The Taycan combines Porsche's renowned driving dynamics with electric efficiency, featuring a two-speed transmission for optimal performance and range, which can exceed 321 kilometres (199 mi) depending on the model and driving conditions.
Design
The Taycan's interior features Porsche's first fully digital instrumentation, with up to four digital displays, including a curved, free-standing 430 mm (16.8 in) configurable driver's display. A 280 mm (10.9 in) screen to the right of the instrument cluster is the car's infotainment center. An optional screen to the right of the infotainment screen allows the front passenger to customise the infotainment system. On the centre console, a 210 mm (8.4 in) portrait-oriented, touchpad-controlled screen shows the powertrain's status and advises the driver on using the car's power efficiently. In contrast with the all-digital layout, the dashboard features the classic Porsche clock at its top.
The exterior styling, by former Porsche Exterior Designer Mitja Borkert, is strongly influenced by the Mission E concept car, retaining most of its design elements except the "suicide doors" and B pillars. Design features of the Taycan include a retractable rear spoiler, retractable door handles, and an advanced regenerative braking system. Taking full advantage of its drivetrain layout, the Taycan combines the fundamental short-nosed front proportions of traditional Porsches with the stretched proportions of modern front-engine models towards the rear, providing clear design links to existing models. The front features four-point LED daytime running headlamps. At the rear, the car has a short notchback-style boot lid, housing a full-width light band serving as taillights and turn signals and providing access to one of two luggage compartments. The other compartment is under the bonnet, with a claimed capacity of nearly 100 litres. The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models include carbon-fibre trim and 20-inch wheels.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
- VIN: WP0AB2Y13LS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I was making a left turn after being stopped at a traffic light - just a few moments after the turn, all of a sudden I experienced violent jerking motions of the car, and lost all power in the middle of traffic, and rolled to a complete stop. This was an exceptionally dangerous place to just have the car stop responding. I noted an error message "Engine Control Error" with a red ring around it in the rightmost instrument cluster. I turned on my hazard lights; other electrical functions were still working in the car (e.g. music was still playing over the audio system). I power cycled car off and then on again, and cleared the error, and the car drove normally again. The problem did not recur despite driving about 5 miles more on the way home. I have stopped and started car and drove brief periods several times since then without issue. The state of charge was about 75%, having charged last night at home on AC to 80%. Ambient temperature outside was hot today, almost 90 degrees F, and very humid.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WP0AC2Y14LS
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: It was stop and go traffic. I was distracted and the car failed to auto stop and I hit the car in front of me. The alert did come on after the collision. I would assume the automatic braking failed or the collision would not have occurred. It was a low speed impact so not a major safety risk but even a minor collision can have a significant injury in susceptible subjects? The problem has not been reproduced to my knowledge. The component has not been inspected. The car has been evaluated by a body shop for damages and the damages are significant. The warning light came on in an inadequate time to prevent the collision. There were no other warning lamps
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-21
- VIN: WP0AC2Y19LS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I discharged the battery to 7% then recharged to 100% using my home charger. When I got into the car, I had an error message stating: 'electrical system error park vehicle in a safe place'. The message disappeared later that day and I was able to drive the car to the dealer.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-08
- VIN: WP0AC2Y1XLS
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On three separate occasions over the past year, my car's emergency collision avoidance system was triggered, (an alarm sounded, a red symbol was on my dash, and the brakes locked), erroneously. No accident occurred, but in the second case below, it caused the car behind me to lock up their brakes and just avoid hitting me...thankfully they were very alert. The first two occasions happened two months apart, but at the same time of day and at the same location. On both occasions, I had driven down a street at approximately 7:30 in the morning. I slowed to make a left turn and then came to a complete stop because traffic was coming in the opposite direction. There was also a car facing me in the alternate lane of the road that I was turning into. Once all oncoming traffic had passed, I pressed the accelerator to make a left turn and turned and moved forward just a few feet when the emergency collision avoidance system was triggered and the car's brakes locked. Within a few moments, the system released and I was able to drive on. Both situations were identical in location and the traffic situation was as I just noted in both cases. The most recent occasion that the system was triggered happened this week. I was in a right turn lane with a car in front of me and one or several cars behind me. I had come to a stop behind the car in front of me who was waiting to make a right turn onto the road. Our turn signal was red. Once the turn signal turned green, the car in front of me moved forward and made the right turn. I accelerated and went about 25 feet and was about to join the road when the collision avoidance system activated, (an alarm sounded, a red symbol was on my dash, and the brakes locked). The car behind me skidded to a stop, luckily without hitting me, and then my car's system released and allowed me to drive on. This must be happening to other users. If so, Porsche should be made aware and they should fix this.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-05
- VIN: WP0AC2Y10LS
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: There is obviously a design flaw in the fan cooling system for the main high voltage 93.4 kw battery. The cooling vents allow small gravel to enter the intake ports powered by fans to cool the battery. (this is a major issue for areas of the country where gravel is used for winter road maintenance. This issues arises every snow season) Gravel gets into the ports and can possibly jamb the fan propeller blades thus not being able to cool the battery properly. I have a work order at the dealership to clean out the cooling ducts. when the gravel enters these ducts they make a grinding sound when the fans engage. The dealership reported this to the manufacturer, and the response from the manufacturer was it is not their issue. The service dealership said additional screening over the intake ports can not be done because information from the manufacturer states this would impede the necessary airflow to cool the batteries. To further bring attention to this design issue, the high voltage 93.4 kw battery failed, July 19, 2023 at 17,551 miles.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-19
- VIN: WP0AC2Y17LS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Porsche Taycan has been plagued with recurrent electrical issues despite 2 factory recall messages and reported fixes. The car screen and gauges all blacked out while driving despite reportedly fixing this electrical problem. Further a serious brake issue occurred (pedal going all the way down making harsh sound) within 2 years. If that’s not enough the car had an “serious electrical system” error message with yellow battery “requires service” and been in the shop for 4months and they apparently cannot fix it. These are all major safety issues for a brand new car within the first 2 years of purchase.

- VIN: WP0AC2Y16LS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving 30 mph in drive mode on westheimer rd when the car suddenly emergency braked and lost all power i went from 30 to 0 in about a second. Yes the car is available for inspection on request. The car had 180 miles of battery power. The car behind me slammed their brakes on and nearly slammed into the rear of the car. The red warning light came on "Electrical System Error park vehicle in a safe place". There was absolutely no warning before this occurred. I am afraid for my life with this car i nearly got into an accident at 30 mph let alone if i was on the highway i could have easily died. This problem has been reported with thousands of porsche taycans. The car has been at the porsche dealership for a week so far where they are reporting electrical faults in the car.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-19
- VIN: WP0AC2Y19LS
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: On March 30, 2023 I had my winter tires and wheels changed out for my summer tires and wheels Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 in sizes 265/35ZR21 101Y XLand 305/30ZR21 104Y XL. At the time, I had about 25,000 miles on the car, and perhaps 15,000 miles on the summer tires. The tire inspection report from Porsche indicated that I had acceptable tread depth on all tires, and no unusual treadwear. Around the end of June I started seeing a very slow pressure decrease in my left rear tire, from about 41psi to 38 psi over a few weeks. On July 18, I experienced a severe drop in pressure to 22 psi and I filled the tire with air to 45psi and used the tire sealant to drive the car to the Porsche dealer, and arrived with 29psi. At no point during the time I had the summer tires on did I ever do anything unusual, or hit any road hazards. Porsche provided me the attached video showing severe cracking between the sidewall and tread around the entire diameter of the drivers side rear, and cracking around part of the diameter of the passenger rear. They claimed this was due to 'misalignment' of the rear tires. The alignment report (attached) shows the drivers rear was within specification, and the passenger rear was 0.2 degrees out of camber (-1.8 deg vs spec of -1.6 deg). There was still 4mm of tread on the tire, and no unusual tread wear was noted on any tires. I have replaced all 4 tires, and am very concerned that the same thing may happen, and I could have a catastrophic failure at high speed. Porsche is unwilling to do anything other than pay for the drivers tire. I don't see how I can be assured that the exact same thing won't happen in the future, since there was no testing or observation that Porsche did that indicated any kind of problem.

Why wouldn't anyone buy an electric Porsche? Because it's still a Porsche! This is the finest automobile I have ever driven. It's not just an electric Panamera, it's an electric 911. You cannot make any assumptions until you drive it. The Taycan... there is no substitute! UPDATE: I am having a different and much better experience with my 2020 Taycan 4S. No issues at all, and software updates are done at home on its own, plugged into the charger. Porsche... there is no substitute!

I have had my car for four months now and continue to enjoy it daily. Although, I must admit that the reversing camera at night is quite inadequate and has me looking at ways to improve the rear illumination. It won’t spoil ownership but it causes great anxiety reversing in poorly lit, unfamiliar areas. On the bright side, the “virtual car” is brilliant during the day!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with Porsche cars. I've actually owned two 911's before getting my TAYCAN 4s. My first one was a 2007 997.1 which I had for 5 years. Then, I traded that for a base 2012 991.1 PDK. However, I recently had some issues with my 2012 992 which made me consider getting a new Porsche before something really expensive needed to be done. Luckily, my dealer had a TAYCAN 4s and a base 992 for me to try out. After testing both, I decided on the TAYCAN 4s due to its EV structure, instant torque and comfort. It's definitely a great daily driver! Although, if you can get one and have the $$, the ideal would be to have a TAYCAN 4s as the daily driver and a GT# touring as the weekend car. Thanks for reading!

It's difficult to avoid using superlatives when describing my 4S Taycan, but it's simply the best car I've ever driven. As someone who has owned a variety of sport-equipped BMWs throughout my life and driven a friend's high-end Tesla, I can confidently say that none of them compare to the combination of performance, styling, and fun yet relaxed drivability that this car offers. Even after two months of ownership, I'm still blown away. By the way, if you're considering getting one, I highly recommend adding the PDCC dynamic suspension option. It really keeps this 2.5 ton vehicle flat in the turns.

Great car! However, it seems to lack in charge miles. When I first took it, I had over 320 miles on a charge. Unfortunately, they reduced it to less than 220 miles to save their battery warranty.

Acceleration on this vehicle is absolutely phenomenal! However, it is important to note that having the carbon ceramic brakes and the rear wheel steering is crucial. Unfortunately, my vehicle did not have these features and the brakes did not function properly, resulting in a crash and total loss. Another reviewer had a similar experience due to the lack of these features. When going into a turn, the vehicle relied solely on the regenerative braking feature and did not engage the mechanical disk brakes, which caused the accident.

It's great to hear that the car looks nice, drives well, and has a sufficient interior. However, I understand your concern about the mileage. It would be difficult to plan a trip with only 210 miles before recharging. Perhaps a range of at least 400 miles would be more suitable for your needs.
