2023 Porsche Taycan problems

porsche logo

The Porsche Taycan is a battery electric luxury sports sedan and shooting brake car produced by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. The concept version of the Taycan, named the Porsche Mission E, debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show; the production Taycan was revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. As Porsche's first series production electric car, it is sold in several variants at different performance levels, and may spawn further derivatives in future models. More than 20,000 Taycans were delivered in 2020, its debut sale year, representing 7.4% of the total Porsche volume. A modified Taycan Turbo S is the current Formula E Safety car.

The name "Taycan" (/taɪ-dʒan/) is a reference to the steed on the coat of Arms of the city of Stuttgart, found on the Porsche crest. In Turkish, tay means colt or young horse, and can means lively. The "Turbo" name used in the higher trims is purely for branding purposes as the vehicles, being electrically powered, do not actually have turbochargers. The Taycan combines Porsche's renowned driving dynamics with electric efficiency, featuring a two-speed transmission for optimal performance and range, which can exceed 321 kilometres (199 mi) depending on the model and driving conditions.

Design

The Taycan's interior features Porsche's first fully digital instrumentation, with up to four digital displays, including a curved, free-standing 430 mm (16.8 in) configurable driver's display. A 280 mm (10.9 in) screen to the right of the instrument cluster is the car's infotainment center. An optional screen to the right of the infotainment screen allows the front passenger to customise the infotainment system. On the centre console, a 210 mm (8.4 in) portrait-oriented, touchpad-controlled screen shows the powertrain's status and advises the driver on using the car's power efficiently. In contrast with the all-digital layout, the dashboard features the classic Porsche clock at its top.

The exterior styling, by former Porsche Exterior Designer Mitja Borkert, is strongly influenced by the Mission E concept car, retaining most of its design elements except the "suicide doors" and B pillars. Design features of the Taycan include a retractable rear spoiler, retractable door handles, and an advanced regenerative braking system. Taking full advantage of its drivetrain layout, the Taycan combines the fundamental short-nosed front proportions of traditional Porsches with the stretched proportions of modern front-engine models towards the rear, providing clear design links to existing models. The front features four-point LED daytime running headlamps. At the rear, the car has a short notchback-style boot lid, housing a full-width light band serving as taillights and turn signals and providing access to one of two luggage compartments. The other compartment is under the bonnet, with a claimed capacity of nearly 100 litres. The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models include carbon-fibre trim and 20-inch wheels.

Common 2023 Porsche Taycan problems

The Porsche Taycan, a highly valued electric car, has faced criticism for being overrated and overpriced.

One of the significant issues with the Porsche Taycan is the sudden power loss, which has affected over 43,000 units, necessitating a software update to fix the issue.

Another common problem with the Porsche Taycan is the electrical system issues, causing a sudden complete loss of power or going into limp mode. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received two dozen complaints over random power loss in the last half of 2022, with many of these Taycan EVs having very few miles on them.

The Taycan's collision avoidance system has also been problematic, with numerous complaints about the system not functioning correctly.

Moreover, the Taycan's software updates have been a source of frustration for owners. For instance, there have been six PCM updates that cover issues ranging from starting issues when too hot or too cold, rough idle, stalling, and emissions failures.

Furthermore, the Taycan's battery seems to have lost about 30% of its range overnight after getting the car back from the dealer, causing frustration and confusion for owners.

Overall, the Porsche Taycan's common problems include sudden power loss, electrical system issues, collision avoidance system problems, software update issues, and battery range loss, causing frustration and inconvenience for owners.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-24
  • Number Of Injuries: 3
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP0AA2Y13PS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: On December 24, 2023, my family and I were involved in a serious accident while driving our 2023 Porsche Taycan. I was making a left turn at approximately 10 mph when a 2009 Honda Fit, traveling in excess of 65 mph, crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the left side of my vehicle. The impact was concentrated on the area around the front door, fender, and left-side charge port, causing over $60,000 in damage and rendering the vehicle a total loss. Despite the severity of the impact, the side curtain airbags failed to deploy. This malfunction significantly compromised the safety of my family, leading to a 60% tear in my left rotator cuff, which required surgery. The failure of the airbags exposed both me and my family to a greater risk of serious injury or death. The body shop recommended by the dealer, as well as the dealership itself, have both acknowledged this issue. The body shop could not understand why the airbags did not deploy. The vehicle remains available for inspection upon request. Prior to the incident, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms indicating any potential problems with the vehicle’s safety systems. The failure of these critical components was only discovered as a result of this accident.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
  • VIN: WP0AD2Y12PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Car has collision detection and remedy system that detects for impending collision and activates braking. Incident occurred when the car in front abruptly brakes and my car detected collision and applied brakes, however, the brakes were not fully applied and would not completely stop to avoid colliding with the rear end of the car. Most importantly, the car would not respond to me pushing the brakes. I tried a couple of times in the short time before I had to turn into the next lane to evade collision. Luckily there were no car next to me. Also the pedal sometimes need to be pressed hard for the brakes to work effectively, and feel the brakes are soft. This happened a few times and both instances were reported to Porsche dealer. This is very dangerous as it occurs when you least expect, and leaves no error code. Dealer found the pedals to be ‘soft’ and adjusted but brake fading issue still persist. This car is a death trap with many recalls including battery bricking on the highway rendering the car immobile in the middle of traffic. Porsche should be forced to buy the car back.

Negative 2023 Porsche Taycan car reviews

  1. Miller Legros 2024-06-16

Acceleration on this vehicle is absolutely phenomenal! However, it is important to note that having the carbon ceramic brakes and the rear wheel steering is crucial. Unfortunately, my vehicle did not have these features and the brakes did not function properly, resulting in a crash and total loss. Another reviewer had a similar experience due to the lack of these features. When going into a turn, the vehicle relied solely on the regenerative braking feature and did not engage the mechanical disk brakes, which caused the accident.

  2. Bernardo Von 2024-05-04

Get ready to see something special - the Porsche Taycan's backup camera. While it may not be perfect, it's definitely unique. Some have compared it to trying to park using only your sense of smell, but it's not quite that bad. The designer may have had some vision issues, but they still managed to create something interesting. Take a look for yourself and see what you think!

  3. Anastacio Stanton 2024-04-14

The car looks great and drives well. The interior is sufficient, and it's fantastic that Porsche got rid of all those ridiculous buttons that used to cover most Porsche center dashboards. However, the overall mileage is a concern. With only 210 miles before recharging, it may not be suitable for longer trips. A range of at least 400 miles would be more practical.

  4. Mauricio Jaskolski 2024-03-09

Great car! However, it seems to lack in charge miles. When I first took it, I had over 320 miles on a charge. Unfortunately, they reduced it to less than 220 miles to save their battery warranty.

Positive 2023 Porsche Taycan car reviews

  1. Stanley Greenholt 2024-11-19

I have driven sports cars with a V8 engine for several years, but this year I made the leap to electric with a 2021 Taycan 4S. It's an amazing vehicle with great balance, power, and drop-dead gorgeous looks!

  2. Bobby Block 2024-11-10

Superb styling. Excellent handling and performance. Vehicle software could benefit from OTA updates and improved menu structure, which are available in other vehicles. However, the range has met my expectations and charging has been easy.

  3. Jakob Schowalter 2024-11-09

I have had my car for four months now and continue to enjoy it daily. Although, I must admit that the reversing camera at night is quite inadequate and has me looking at ways to improve the rear illumination. It won’t spoil ownership but it causes great anxiety reversing in poorly lit, unfamiliar areas. On the bright side, the “virtual car” is brilliant during the day!

  4. Cristobal Hodkiewicz 2024-10-25

Drives like a Rolls and Fast as an Exotic!

  5. Ignatius Paucek 2024-09-10

It's difficult to avoid using superlatives when describing my 4S Taycan, but it's simply the best car I've ever driven. As someone who has owned a variety of sport-equipped BMWs throughout my life and driven a friend's high-end Tesla, I can confidently say that none of them compare to the combination of performance, styling, and fun yet relaxed drivability that this car offers. Even after two months of ownership, I'm still blown away. By the way, if you're considering getting one, I highly recommend adding the PDCC dynamic suspension option. It really keeps this 2.5 ton vehicle flat in the turns.
