Porsche Taycan 2021 problems

porsche logo

The Porsche Taycan is a battery electric luxury sports sedan and shooting brake car produced by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. The concept version of the Taycan, named the Porsche Mission E, debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show; the production Taycan was revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. As Porsche's first series production electric car, it is sold in several variants at different performance levels, and may spawn further derivatives in future models. More than 20,000 Taycans were delivered in 2020, its debut sale year, representing 7.4% of the total Porsche volume. A modified Taycan Turbo S is the current Formula E Safety car.

The name "Taycan" (/taɪ-dʒan/) is a reference to the steed on the coat of Arms of the city of Stuttgart, found on the Porsche crest. In Turkish, tay means colt or young horse, and can means lively. The "Turbo" name used in the higher trims is purely for branding purposes as the vehicles, being electrically powered, do not actually have turbochargers. The Taycan combines Porsche's renowned driving dynamics with electric efficiency, featuring a two-speed transmission for optimal performance and range, which can exceed 321 kilometres (199 mi) depending on the model and driving conditions.

Design

The Taycan's interior features Porsche's first fully digital instrumentation, with up to four digital displays, including a curved, free-standing 430 mm (16.8 in) configurable driver's display. A 280 mm (10.9 in) screen to the right of the instrument cluster is the car's infotainment center. An optional screen to the right of the infotainment screen allows the front passenger to customise the infotainment system. On the centre console, a 210 mm (8.4 in) portrait-oriented, touchpad-controlled screen shows the powertrain's status and advises the driver on using the car's power efficiently. In contrast with the all-digital layout, the dashboard features the classic Porsche clock at its top.

The exterior styling, by former Porsche Exterior Designer Mitja Borkert, is strongly influenced by the Mission E concept car, retaining most of its design elements except the "suicide doors" and B pillars. Design features of the Taycan include a retractable rear spoiler, retractable door handles, and an advanced regenerative braking system. Taking full advantage of its drivetrain layout, the Taycan combines the fundamental short-nosed front proportions of traditional Porsches with the stretched proportions of modern front-engine models towards the rear, providing clear design links to existing models. The front features four-point LED daytime running headlamps. At the rear, the car has a short notchback-style boot lid, housing a full-width light band serving as taillights and turn signals and providing access to one of two luggage compartments. The other compartment is under the bonnet, with a claimed capacity of nearly 100 litres. The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models include carbon-fibre trim and 20-inch wheels.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: WP0AB2Y19MS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On September 5th I was driving my 2021 Taycan 4S on my way to the Gym at 4:15 am, at that time there hardly any traffic. As am merging on the 101 southbound at the nearest on ramp everything seemed ok, as am driving along at 60-65 mph, I came to a downhill and the car was gaining speed, I stepped on the brake pedal to slow it down and to my surprise the brake pedal went all the way down to the floor! I had no brakes and gaining speed, my first thought was if the brakes had failed I would either crash the car against the freeway sidewalks or try to find a place where I can crash without hurting other drivers, fortunately I kept on pressing the brake pedal and it built up some pressure to slow it down but not to stop it, I kept my cool, but I was shaking knowing that I had no brakes! after a few miles the car was slowing down and was able To get off the freeway and pulled into my gym’s parking lot that luckily has an uphill and it helped to slow it down to a complete stop. At this point there was no warnings or error on the dashboard until it came to a complete stop, the message read “PSM failure” and to visit the workshop, nothing about the brake failure that had just happened! And it was after 2 hours, the failure occurred at 4:15 am and that did not show up until 6:12 am. I went into my gym to calm myself down after this horrible experience and after an hour or so I went back to my car and that is when I saw the warning, after a while I called Porsche road assistance and left the car where it was because Porsche road assistance couldn’t send a tow truck quickly, I revived a call from the tow truck company at 9:00 am and met them at the location, I explained to the driver what had happened and as he drove the car out of the parking spot brake fluid started to spray, out of the driver side font caliper, and there was a poodle of brake fluid under the car.

WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP0AA2Y11MS
  • Components: WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was driving N/B 101 freeway w my wife at approx 70 mph. I felt the rear end slip ever so slightly and thought maybe I somehow lost traction w the road. I continued driving and it occurred twice more in the span of a few miles. I then realized it was unlikely I continued to lose traction with the road. I told my wife something felt wrong and began to maneuver from the #1 lane to the shoulder. I slowed to 50 mph and continued straight w my foot off the accelerator and the brake with both hands on the steering wheel in a straight (non turning) position. Suddenly, the rear end of the vehicle came out and we went into a massive spin. It ultimately caused us to crash into a median wall. I have been through many driver's courses. I have been through many skid pad trainings. I have also been through Precision Intervention Technique (PIT) training. I have been in both the receiving end of a PIT and the giving end of a PIT. The force of this spin was greater than any spin I have felt. It felt like one side or perhaps both rear wheels locked up. I have no other explanation that could cause any vehicle to just spin out of control while driving straight at 50 mph.

There were no witnesses to the event, but it was later noticed that the wall around the outlet was blackened and one prong of the plug had melted the housing of the plug along with the receptacle. The Mobile Charger Connect had previously shown a high temperature warning, so the operating current was reduced from 40 to 30 amps at the direction of service personnel at the dealership. The Mobile Charger Connect was plugged into the specified NEMA 14-50 receptacle that has been in use for the entire duration of ownership.

My daughter and i were almost killed by the car behind us. Had to run across highway to get to safety. Porsche North America says this is just a service issue and not a safety issue. Google search reveals this is a widespread problem and not an isolated event as was told to owner. This was my 6th porsche and my last. Was told the power converter from AC to DC was fried and replacement part took almost 4 weeks to get and replace. No prior warnings lamps or indication that something was about to fry and cause the car to become inoperable.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-18
  • VIN: WP0AB2Y14MS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes fail in wet conditions. Porsche Taycan has 2 brake systems- light braking is regenerative braking (converting mechanical energy into electricity) and for heavier braking the mechanical disc brakes take over IN THIS FAILURE SITUATION in wet conditions pressing the brake pedal does VERY LITTLE to slow the car. DURING THESE FAILURE SITUATIONS, there is 0 regenerative braking occurring. Normally if there is 0 regen braking mechanical brakes engage at 1% brake pedal press so the entirety of the brake pedal engages the mechanical brakes. DURING THIS FAILURE SITUATION, the mechanical braking system does not engage early so it does not begin to engage until near the end of the brake pedal travel. DURING THIS FAILURE EVENT, THE MECHANICAL BRAKES ARE ONLY AT MINIMAL STOPPING POWER (+/- 20%). It has been compared to the first stop after getting a car washed– one must ‘jam on’ their brakes in order to get their car to stop, after which it tends to stop well. Cars come from the car wash at 1-3 mph, so 10-20% braking power does not put the user in jeopardy. IN THESE FAILURE SITUATIONS THE PORSCHE TAYCAN only has 10-20% stopping power WHILE TRAVELLING ‘AT SPEED’ ON NORMAL ROADWAYS The first time this happened I was approaching a stop light in traffic. If the turn lane weren’t empty I WOULD HAVE CRASHED into the cars ahead of me; I jerked the car into the turn lane & eventually came to a stop, with the brake pedal pressed in at 100% for the entire time. It happens at speeds from 3-50 mph It HAS been reproduced with myself in the car by Porsche service, and by other people in their cars, it was reproduced on my car AND ALL OTHER TAYCANS ON THE LOT at the dealer – each car did it The dealer has done ‘everything in their power’ but it is still happening. I was told Porsche NA was investigating on their wet track at their Atlanta HQ, but that the cars ‘tested as designed’ No warning messages or errors –the regen braking gauge always shows 0% while this happens

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-30
  • VIN: WP0AB2Y14MS
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The heating unit and defrosting unit fail on the Porsche Taycans. I have seen this in other Porsche Taycans and it is nearly impossible to see through the windshield when it fails. I had to cautiously limp it to a Porsche dealership due to not being able to see out of the front windshield. There were no warning lamps or messages displayed simply zero heat and the driver side and passenger side windshield areas immediately fog up and it is impossible for it to be reduced.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-18
  • VIN: WP0BA2Y18MS
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Cabin heater in the car failed during very cold temperatures. Making the windows fog up considerably. Limiting my trips to short distances until this problem can be fixed due the safety concern of the windows fogging during longer trips. No warnings to the failure, dealer is aware of this being a common issue on the Taycan.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
  • VIN: WP0AA2Y1XMS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving my Porsche Taycan 2021 (5000 miles) Nov 4th, 2022, at highway speeds on I-15 to Vegas, the instrument cluster started flashing "Electric System Error" and instructed me to park in safe place immediately and call Roadside Assistance. I had to park on the hard shoulder and wait for a tow truck. It was scary as there were big rigs passing my every 10-20 seconds. Car was towed to the Porsche dealer in Vegas. Upon inspection it was found that the "High Voltage Converter" had malfunctioned and had to be replaced. This is very concerning that a critical EV component can fail in new car, which had done just over 5000 miles. Dealer replaced the component and now the vehicle is running fine but I am very skeptical to take the car out on long drives.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-27
  • VIN: WP0AB2Y10MS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: There have been four total episodes when the car would not accelerate when the acceleration pedal was pressed. The last time it happened (late October 2022) the acceleration was very sluggish and I barely made it home. This happened on a residential street, and continued for 10+ minutes. If this power loss occurred on a highway, it could have lead to a very dangerous situation. There were no errors/warnings on dash. I brought the car for service to address this issue on Nov 2nd to Porsche Irvine. They told me that they identified a problem and had to replace "rear control unit" but since it's not available, they cannot provide ETA and car is still in service for 30 days now.

Negative Porsche Taycan 2021 car reviews

  1. Kieran Boehm 2024-11-29

I’ve owned 2 Porches: 911 Turbo S and Macan S. I absolutely love the engineering, craftsmanship, handling, speed and design. However, I do feel that the battery could use some improvement and the car could benefit from a height adjustment to eliminate scraping the road. Additionally, I find that there are too many electronic safety devices that I don't find useful and not enough creature comforts when compared to Mercedes. Lastly, I find the Launch pad to be a totally useless and impractical toy.

  2. Grant Wilkinson 2024-11-10

If you're new to electric cars, it's understandable why some people might find the Taycan impressive. However, as an owner of both a Taycan and a Tesla Model 3 Performance, I have to say that the Taycan falls short in some key areas. To be fair, there are some good points, such as exceptional build quality and driving feel. The performance is also decent, although not quite up to Tesla's standards. However, there are some serious issues that Porsche doesn't tell you about. In the UK, the charging network is quite poor, and if you use your car frequently, the Taycan may not be the best fit for you. It struggles to charge quickly on a 7kw charger, taking over 12 hours to charge 200 miles compared to 6 hours for a Tesla. Porsche either didn't know about this issue or chose not to disclose it to customers. Charging on anything other than IONITY is not practical unless you have 6 hours to spare. The profiles and timers functionality is also subpar, and the guidance is not helpful. The sales staff at Porsche are not knowledgeable about the car's features, and I had to rely on customer YouTube videos for help. For a car that costs £115k, this is unacceptable. Personally, I wouldn't buy another Taycan. While the build quality is impressive, it's not worth the price. If you're looking for practicality, the Taycan is not the best option. I've recently ordered a Plaid Plus with 500 miles of range, sacrificing build quality for the most important feature of an EV: range and charging speed.

  3. Newton Ortiz 2024-09-24

Acceleration on this vehicle is absolutely phenomenal! However, it is important to note that having the carbon ceramic brakes and the rear wheel steering is crucial. Unfortunately, my vehicle did not have these features and the brakes did not function properly, resulting in a crash and total loss. Another reviewer had a similar experience due to the lack of these features. When going into a turn, the vehicle relied solely on the regenerative braking feature and did not engage the mechanical disk brakes, which caused the accident.

  4. Graham Beahan 2024-07-03

The car looks great and drives well. The interior is sufficient, and it's fantastic that Porsche got rid of all those ridiculous buttons that used to cover most Porsche center dashboards. However, the overall mileage is a concern. With only 210 miles before recharging, it may not be suitable for longer trips. A range of at least 400 miles would be more practical.

  5. Ismael Stroman 2024-01-29

I am disappointed with my Porsche Turbo S as the streaming music feature is not working and Porsche has been unable to provide a solution. Despite being a top-of-the-line car, the interior electronics are disappointing. It is unfortunate that Porsche has not taken any steps to address this issue. It is worth noting that this issue has been reported by several customers since the release of the vehicle in 2020. In comparison, Tesla may be a better option.

Positive Porsche Taycan 2021 car reviews

  1. Jasper Hartmann 2024-11-20

I have driven sports cars with a V8 engine for several years, but this year I made the leap to electric with a 2021 Taycan 4S. It's an amazing vehicle with great balance, power, and drop-dead gorgeous looks!

  2. Abelardo Bernhard 2024-11-17

Drives like a Rolls and Fast as an Exotic!

  3. Jake Hackett 2024-09-29

Fast, whippy, and handles well. It's an eye-catching and fun experience to drive!

  4. Jaylan Runte 2024-09-13

It's difficult to avoid using superlatives when describing my 4S Taycan, but it's simply the best car I've ever driven. As someone who has owned a variety of sport-equipped BMWs throughout my life and driven a friend's high-end Tesla, I can confidently say that none of them compare to the combination of performance, styling, and fun yet relaxed drivability that this car offers. Even after two months of ownership, I'm still blown away. By the way, if you're considering getting one, I highly recommend adding the PDCC dynamic suspension option. It really keeps this 2.5 ton vehicle flat in the turns.

  5. Juwan Konopelski 2024-08-08

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with Porsche cars. I've actually owned two 911's before getting my TAYCAN 4s. My first one was a 2007 997.1 which I had for 5 years. Then, I traded that for a base 2012 991.1 PDK. However, I recently had some issues with my 2012 992 which gave me TWO check engine lights earlier this year (Camshaft problem) and a failed fuel pump last year. So, I decided it was time to look for a NEW Porsche before something really expensive needed to be done. Luckily, my dealer had a TAYCAN 4s and a base 992 to try out. Honestly, the new 992 with the TURBO charged engine rather than the 991 (non turbo) didn't feel or sound like the old 991. So, I tested the TAYCAN 4s right after that. Basically, the TAYCAN 4s feels and drives like the BASE 992 (without SPORT exhaust of course). The price of a TAYCAN 4s and a base 992 are about the same. I decided on the TAYCAN 4s due to its EV structure, instant torque and comfort. I cannot go back to a 911 as a daily driver. Of course, the ideal would be TAYCAN 4s as the daily driver and a GT# touring as the weekend car (If you can get one and have the $$ to buy both). Thanks for reading!
