1996 Subaru Svx problems

The Subaru Alcyone SVX, marketed outside Japan as the Subaru SVX, is a two-door, front-engine, all- or front-wheel drive coupé manufactured and marketed by Subaru from 1991 to 1996 over a single generation.
Superseding the company's aviation-influenced XT range, the Alcyone SVX was Subaru's first entry into the luxury/performance market, and was noted for its aircraft-inspired 'window-within-a-window' side-glass configuration.
The nameplate "Alcyone" (pronounced "al-SIGH-uh-nee") refers to the brightest star in the Pleiades constellation, stylized in the Subaru company logo. The suffix "SVX" is an acronym for "Subaru Vehicle X".

Common 1996 Subaru Svx problems
The Subaru SVX, produced from 1991 to 1996, is known for its complex engine and unique features, but also faces common problems that affect its reliability and performance. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Subaru SVX:
- Wheel bearings: Another common problem with the SVX is wheel bearing failure, which can affect both front and rear bearings. This issue can lead to noise, vibration, and even loss of control, making it a critical concern for SVX owners.
- Electrical system issues: The SVX's electrical system, including the sunroof and air conditioning, is known to have problems. The sunroof has been reported to lapse into a coma, requiring significant repairs, while the air conditioning system isn't the most robust.
- Engine complexity: The SVX's engine is incredibly complex, featuring IRIS, Subaru's variable intake system, and four overhead cams operating four valves per cylinder. This complexity can lead to issues with maintenance and repair, as well as increased costs for parts and labor.
- Rust and deterioration: As with any car, the SVX can suffer from rust and deterioration over time, particularly in areas such as the undercarriage and wheel wells. This can lead to structural issues and reduced performance, making regular inspections and maintenance essential for SVX owners.
- Space and comfort: While the SVX offers a spacious and well-finished cabin, the 2+2 seating can be limiting, and the rear legroom and headroom may be insufficient for taller passengers.
- Handling and performance: The SVX's handling and performance are broadly equivalent to a four-litre Jaguar XJ-S, but with added roadholding. However, the power output and acceleration may not meet the expectations of some drivers, particularly those looking for a high-performance sports car.
In conclusion, while the Subaru SVX is a unique and stylish car with many appealing features, it is not without its common problems. Transmission failures, wheel bearing issues, electrical system problems, engine complexity, rust and deterioration, space and comfort limitations, and handling and performance concerns are all factors that SVX owners should be aware of and address through regular maintenance and repair.
Why did the Subaru SVX fail?
It was the only available gearbox because Subaru didn't have a manual transmission that could effectively put up with the SVX without liquifying itself (via MotorTrend). A hefty price tag and somewhat weak transmission spelled sales disaster for Subaru. All told, the brand sold around 14,000 SVXs during its short life.
What is the top speed of a 1996 Subaru SVX?
The sprint from 0-60 took an impressive 7.3 seconds and the aerodynamic SVX had a top speed above 150 mph. Performance was further enhanced by fully independent suspension and anti-lock brakes.
Is Subaru SVX a rare car?
In its production lifetime between 1991 and 1996, the Subaru SVX is reckoned to have sold 24,379 units — that's slightly more than the 23,400 examples of Citroën C6, with which I am very familiar.

- Summary: THE FOLLOWING LETTER HAS BEEN SENT TO SUBARU OF AMERICA.... THIS LETTER IS SENT ON THE BEHALF OF THE MANY OWNERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE FAILURES OF THE 4EAT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN THE SUBARU SVX. IT IS EVIDENT THAT THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE TRANSMISSION THAT CAUSES THE PREMATURE FAILURES FOR ALL MODEL YEARS. THESE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED IN CARS WITH VERY LOW MILEAGE AND CONTINUED TO OCCUR THEREAFTER. REPAIR AND/OR REPLACMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION IS VERY EXPENSIVE, COSTING APPROXIMATELY AND, AS OF THIS DATE, THERE HAS BEEN NO SUPPORT FROM SUBARU. UNDERSTANDABLY, THE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE BECOME QUITE ANGRY AT SUBARU'S LACK OF RESPONSE OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT A PROBLEM EVEN EXISTS, AND HAVE CONSULTED LEGAL COUNSEL REGARDING A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. TO AVOID AN UNPLEASANT AND HOSTILE SITUATION, AND IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN GOOD RELATIONS WITH THE OWNERS OF YOUR CARS, THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS ARE DEMANDED: 1. SUBARU RECALLS AND REPLACES THE TRANSMISSIONS FOR ALL MODEL YEARS 2. EXTENDS THE TRANSMISSION WARRANTY TO 100,000 MILES FOR ALL MODEL YEARS UNLESS A WRITTEN RESPONSE IS RECEIVED WITHIN 30 DAYS, LITIGATION WILL BE INSTITUTED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANTICIPATED COURTESY AND COOPERATION.

I've owned my '92 SVX for 8 years and absolutely adore its style and speed. However, it's worth noting that the transmission can be a bit weak due to some engineering decisions, possibly influenced by budget constraints. Fortunately, improvements were made in '94 and even more so from '95 onwards, but unfortunately, most of the cars sold were already on the road by then. The good news is that there are some simple and effective fixes for the '92-'93 models: 1) Use full synthetic transmission fluid. 2) Install a transmission cooler. 3) Install a transmission fluid filter (your mechanic or owner websites can provide more information). After these modifications, you'll be in complete control of the power.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I bought this car with 180k on it and it still runs perfectly. The interior is in great condition and the transmission was rebuilt. Additionally, the car's electronics work perfectly. I expect this car to last for at least another 100k. Let me know if you have any questions!

I really enjoyed driving this car, but unfortunately, I had to replace the transmission four times during the nine years that I owned it (I bought it new in '92). Two of the replacements were covered under warranty, but the last two were quite expensive, costing over $3,000. It was a bit frustrating to deal with, especially since I didn't drive the car hard. Additionally, the CV boots needed to be replaced every year and it was tough to keep the alignment in check. Despite these issues, I still would have continued driving the car if it weren't for the transmission problems. Overall, it was a fantastic car to drive.

I really love this car! The engine is so strong and the style is just amazing. I even added an aftermarket exhaust that sounds like a Porsche instead of a bumble bee. It's been such a blast driving this car, but the only downside is that everyone always asks about the windows.

The SVX is an incredibly enjoyable car to drive. Upon trading in my 1989 Corvette for this model, I immediately noticed a significant improvement in my driving experience. The smooth and quiet ride, even at high speeds, is truly remarkable and akin to sitting in an airplane. Additionally, I have never encountered any technical issues with this vehicle. While I have noticed that it can be a bit challenging to enter and exit the car as I have gotten older, this does not detract from the overall excellence of the SVX.
