The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2011 Porsche Cayenne turbo problems

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Drivetrain issues: Problems with the drivetrain can cause the vehicle to become uncontrollable and erratic. Several drivers have reported that their SUV’s drivetrain transfer case has failed without warning.
  • Coolant system problems: Some owners of first-gen Cayennes complained about the coolant system, mainly attributed to its plastic coolant pipes. Apparently, the plastic coolant pipes can’t handle the high temperatures and will fracture or leak.
  • Failed startup: Frustrated owners complained that the Cayenne’s fuel pump was vulnerable to failure. A faulty fuel pump may result in a no-start or stalling condition and require a replacement.
  • Camshaft bolts: One concern seems to be the camshaft bolts. If the cam bolts are aluminum, they need to be replaced. You can look in through the oil filler cap to check if the bolts are aluminum or not.
  • Transfer case replacement: Transfer case replacement seems common in the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. There was a clear thumping on the underside, felt like a tire was flat or the pavement was very uneven.
  • Glue causing coolant pipes to weaken: Some owners have reported that glue used in the coolant pipes can cause them to weaken, although this seems very rare.
  • Transmission issues: There have been some transmission issues reported, but they do not seem to be a major concern.

It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners and may not represent every 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo on the road. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

What is the most common problem with the Porsche Cayenne?

Low Pressure Fuel Pump Failure

Failure of the in-tank pumps is very common. Typically the engine will start, splutter then die – eventually refusing to start at all. This is caused by the pump overheating very quickly and shutting off.

  • VIN: WP1AC2A23BL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle shuddered abnormally. Additionally, while driving, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist, and the brake pedal was firm while depressed. The vehicle failed to come to a complete stop. The traction control, check engine, oil pressure, and several other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the passenger's side camshaft controller and bolts had failed. The dealer determined that both the driver's and passenger's side camshaft controllers and bolts needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the camshaft adjusters and bolts under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V368000 (Engine) associated with the VIN; however, the contact was not satisfied with the remedy for the recall. The contact stated that the dealer failed to recover all the failed bolts inside the engine. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 131,046.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-17
  • VIN: WP1AB2A29BL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have a 2011 model Porsche Cayenne S. From the service records, I can tell the car has had two transfer cases already replaced and is in need of another. The first transfer case was replaced in mid-2016 by the dealer at about 46,000 miles. The second transfer case was replaced just over 12,000 miles later, at 58,500 miles, in late 2019. Both replacements were done by the previous owner. This should have been the newest and most updated transfer case with the new control modules and GNC-coated plates, but this does not appear to have solved the problems Porsche is having with the transfer cases. It is now mid-2023, and an independent shop says I need another transfer case in my car at 76,000 miles. It is hard to believe that Porsche considered the upgraded parts (2018+) to be a permanent solution, especially when it only lasted about 17,000 miles.      I will hopefully be able to have my local dealership dissect the transfer case I am replacing so that I can learn more about what actually failed on this updated unit. Transfer cases are a major part of the vehicle and should be expected to last just as long as other major components (ex. engine, transmission). It is very unsafe when any major part of the drive train fails.  PS. One of the main reasons for purchasing this specific cayenne was because I believed the transfer case it had installed in 2019 would have solved all of these issues and I would not need to replace it again.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-08
  • VIN: WP1AV2A24BL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Porsche Cayenne. The contact noticed that the smoke light stop functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the fuse for the smoke light was replaced. On another occasion, the contact noticed that the passenger-side headlight to the vehicle stop functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the light bulb was replaced but the failure reoccurred, and the passenger side headlight light bulb was replaced. On another occasion, the air condition stops functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the blower motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not under NHTSA Campaign Number: 04V069000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) and did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 20,000. The contact stated that the failure mileage was between 60,000 and 80,000. The recall for a faulty main wiring harness does not include the contact's VIN. The contact has concerns about the bad wiring eventually causing a fire. No repairs have been made. The contact stated the problem still persists, and informed there is a electrical problem.

  • VIN: WP1AC2A25BL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2011 Cayenne Turbo: Vehicle has had recent transfer case servicing. Experiencing a grinding sensation on roundabouts, and turns that almost feels as if the brake is applied. If issue continues to worsen, it could easily cause an accident as a sudden speed reduction on a roundabout, or turn may prompt unaware/inattentive drivers to rear-end me, or worse. Dealership is citing transfer case failure, however, my vehicle is one year removed from the end of the extended warranty campaign and is no longer eligible for a replacement unit.

A LOCAL PORSCHE SHOP TOLD ME THIS IS A KNOWN MANUFACTURER'S ISSUE AND VERY COMMON IN THESE CARS - DUE TO A KNOWN DEFECT IN THE TRANSFER CASE AND CAN BE DANGEROUS, BUT NO RECALL (KNOWN) SO FAR. I WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION CAN LOCK UP DURING DRIVING AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATH. I AM NOW SCARED TO DRIVE IT. I HAVE A LUXURY VEHICLE THAT I AM PAYING INSURANCE ON OF WHICH I CAN'T DRIVE THAT IS USELESS SITTING IN MY GARAGE. THIS WAS MY 1ST PORSCHE AND SADLY MAY BE MY LAST IF THIS IS NOT RESOLVED. I HAVE READ TONS OF REPORTS ON FORUMS CITING THIS SAME PROBLEM. IF THIS IS SUCH A KNOWN HAZARD WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO HAVE PORSCE DO THE RIGHT THING AND RECALL & GET THIS FIXED? I PRAY THEY ARE NOT WAITING FOR A DEATH FIRST. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-21
  • VIN: WP1AC2A26BL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TRANSFER CASE FAILURE. THERE IS AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT BY PORSCHE OF AN ASSOCIATED DEFECT OF THE TRANSFER CASE DESIGN AND A RELATED WORKSHOP BULLETIN (WB) WHEN REPLACING THE TRANSFER CASE. PORSCHE MECHANICS ARE INSTRUCTED TO REPLACE A "VENT HOSE" FOR THE TRANSFER CASE. THIS NEWLY REVISED DESIGN PART NUMBER FOR THE REVISED VENT IS 958-301-047-10. THE REASON: THE ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR CAYENNE 958 PORSCHE TRANSFER CASES HAD THE HOSE ENDING ON THE LOWER (CLOSER TO THE GROUND) SIDE OF THE TRANSFER CASE. THE NEW HOSE ENDS ON THE UPPER (FURTHER FROM THE GROUND) SIDE OF THE TRANSFER CASE. PORSCHE DETERMINED THAT MOISTURE WAS GETTING SUCKED INTO THE CASES AND CAUSING FLUID CONTAMINATION. SINCE THE TRANSFER CASE USES A "MULTIPLATE WET CLUTCH", MOISTURE COULD PREMATURELY CORRODE OR ALLOW RUST TO FORM, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE CLUTCH TO BIND AND WORK ERRATICALLY. THESE ARE SYMPTOMS DESCRIBED BY MULTIPLE OWNERS OF 958 CAYENNES DISCUSSED IN PORSCHE FORUMS (E.G. RENNTECH.ORG, RENNSLIST.COM, ETC.). THIS REVISED VENT DEVELOPED BY PORSCHE TO REPLACE THE EXISTING DESIGN, SHOULD BE COVERED BY PORSCHE. MOREOVER, OWNERS OF 958 CAYENNES WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED FAILURES OF THE TRANSFER CASE AND SUBSEQUENT REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSFER CASE AND THE NEWLY DESIGNED HOSE, SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE FULL COST OF THE REPLACEMENT TRANSFER CASE AND THE HOSE. THERE ARE NOW HUNDREDS OF CAYENNE OWNERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM. MOREOVER, THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE DOES NOT CALL FOR ANY PREVENTATIVE FLUID CHANGES OF THE TRANSMISSION OIL. THIS SHOULD BE REVISED AND RECOMMENDED SERVICING SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED (E.G., EVERY 10,000 MILES). THE FAILURE OF THE TRANSFER CASE COULD CAUSE VEHICLES TO LURCH OR REACT IN AN ERRATIC OR UNSAFE CAPACITY ACROSS THE SPECTRUM OF OPERATION, INCLUDING HIGHWAY SPEED DRIVING. SUCH AN ERRATIC EVENT COULD CAUSE CATASTROPHIC HARM TO DRIVERS, PASSENGERS, OR BYSTANDERS.
