1998 Jaguar Xj8 problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar XJ (X308) is a full-size luxury saloon car manufactured and marketed by Jaguar Cars for years 1997–2003 across two generations and featuring the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine and Jaguar independent rear suspension. It was the third and final evolution of the Jaguar XJ40 platform that had been in production since 1986. It was preceded by the Jaguar XJ (X300).

Exterior

The X308 kept much of the same exterior styling as its predecessor, the Jaguar XJ (X300), carrying its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From the front, the two generations can be differentiated by the shape of the indicator lenses (rectangular on the X300, oval on the X308), and also by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance air intake, both of which are more rounded on the X308.

The front and rear bumpers were both changed along with the taillights which had red/clear lenses rather than red/grey lenses. The grille surround and badging was slightly changed. The headlight fixtures also included forward parking lights housed with the brights, new to X308.

Common 1998 Jaguar Xj8 problems

The Jaguar XJ8 1998 is a luxury vehicle that has been praised for its smooth ride and powerful engine. However, like any car, it has its fair share of common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

One of the most frequently reported issues with the Jaguar XJ8 1998 is related to its fuel system. Many owners have reported that their cars sound like they are running out of fuel, even when the tank is full. This issue can be caused by dirty fuel injectors or a clogged throttle body, which can restrict the flow of fuel to the engine. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the fuel injectors and throttle body, can help prevent this problem.

Another common issue with the Jaguar XJ8 1998 is related to its throttle. Some owners have reported problems with the throttle not opening properly, which can cause the car to stall or run poorly. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a dirty throttle body, faulty sensors, or a damaged throttle cable. Regular maintenance and inspection of the throttle system can help prevent this problem.

The Jaguar XJ8 1998 also has a known issue with its cooling system. Early V8 models of the car had plastic tensioners and water pump impellers that were prone to breaking, which could cause major damage to the engine. These issues have been largely resolved in later models, but it is still important to check the service history of any Jaguar XJ8 1998 before purchasing it. If the car has not had its tensioners and water pump impellers replaced, it is recommended to do so to prevent any potential issues.

Finally, the Jaguar XJ8 1998 has been reported to have issues with its suspension bushes, which need to be replaced every 25,000 miles. This is especially important for the XJR model, which has a high-performance suspension system that can be more prone to wear and tear. Regular maintenance and inspection of the suspension system can help prevent this problem.

In summary, the Jaguar XJ8 1998 is a powerful and luxurious car that has been praised for its smooth ride and high-performance engine. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems, including issues with the fuel system, throttle, cooling system, and suspension. Regular maintenance and inspection of these systems can help prevent these problems and ensure that the car runs smoothly and reliably.

CAR STALLED CAUSING ME TO SWERVE NEXT TO CENTER MEDIAN RIPPING OFF THE ENGINE COVER ON DEBRIS. JAGUAR FIXED THROTTLE BODY NOT ENGINE COVER.SERVICE BULLETIN, DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. CAR RAN POORLY THEREAFTER. STALLED AGAIN YEAR LATER. DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR. $3,000 TO FIX.. RECENTLY DISCOVERED CONSUMERS WORLD WIDE HAVE SAME PROBLEM. SERVICE BULLETIN REPAIR ONLY SHORT TERM FIX. JAGUAR BLOG IN THE UK -CONSUMER DISCOVERED FROM A JAGUAR MECHANIC , MOST THROTTLE BODIES NEEDED TO BE CLEANED PERIODICALLY AS THE LINING BAD AND BUILD UP OR DEPOSITS WOULD FORM ON THE WALLS OF THE THROTTLE BODY AND CAUSE IT TO MALFUNCTION. MY MECHANIC HAD HEARD OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I CALLED SEVERAL JAGUAR DEALERSHIPS. I WAS TOLD, OFF THE RECORD, THAT I COULD CLEAN THE THROTTLE AND GET BY, BUT CERTAIN CLEANERS WOULD CAUSE THE LINING TO DETERIORATE. I WAS TOLD THE REPLACEMENT WAS A RIP OFF, OFF THE RECORD. USING THE APPROPRIATE CLEANER, THE ASSEMBLY WAS CLEANED WITHOUT REMOVAL. WHEN WE TURNED ON THE VEHICLE SMOKE BILLOWED OUT OF THE EXHAUST FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND THEN SUBSIDED. THE VEHICLE NOW RUNS PERFECTLY. JAGUAR IS PROFITING FROM REPLACEMENT OF PARTS THAT COULD BE CLEANED AND NEED TOP BE CLEANED REGULARLY. REPLACEMENTS EFFECTIVE SHORT TERM ONLY. YOUR FORM ALLOWS ONLY "S" TYPE EQUIP". THIS IS A XJ8. *JB
