2005 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
  • VIN: 3G2JB14F45S
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: None of the gauges work properly Gm has not issued a recall despite the numerous complaints and it is a 500 to 800 dollar repair bill to replace the instrument cluster. 2005 Sunfire and the instrument cluster is malfunctioning. The gas gauge has stopped working altogether and the temp and rpm gauge work erratically. This is definitely a recall issue and has nothing to do with the maintenance of the vehicle. Gm wants me to have a dealer check the vehicle when they are well aware of this issue as there are multiple posting from owners of this issue online.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-15
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: RECALL NEEDED! INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS FAILED. STARTED WITH THE FUEL GAUGE MOVING IN WRONG DIRECTION INTO SPEEDOMETER. EMPTY IS AT 110MPH. SPEEDOMETER STUCK AT 55MPH WHILE COMING INTO TOWN AND NEEDING TO REDUCE TO 35MPH WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME! WITH THE LINE OF TRAFFIC THAT WAS BEHIND ME IM GUESSING IT WAS STUCK THERE FOR A BIT BEFORE I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG. AFTER PULLING OVER AND TURNING MOTOR OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIMES IT NOW GOES DOWN TO 45MPH AND INCREASES FROM THERE. RPM DIAL STOPPED WORKING MOMENTS AFTER SPEEDOMETER STUCK. HEAT GUAGE SEEMS INTACT BUT WHO KNOWS FOR SURE. SO NOW I'M STUCK WITH A CAR I DON'T FEEL SAFE PUTTING MY CHILDREN IN AND I CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX. • Summary: INSTRUMENT GAUGE (SPEEDOMETER) WENT FIRST THEN SLOWLY PROGRESSED INTO ALL OF THEM. THEY ARE SPORADICALLY ACCURATE, BUT MOST OF THE TIME REST AT THE LOW OR HIGH END AND OFTEN OFF INTO THE NEXT GAUGE. I PAID FIRESTONE A FEW YEARS BACK TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC HOPING ONE GAUGE WAS FAULTY CAUSING THE REST TO FAIL, BUT ITS THE CLUSTER. COST FOR REPLACEMENT ~ $800. (FOR ME ABOUT 3 WEEKS PAY) SO RECENTLY I DECIDED I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE AND WENT SEARCHING FOR ALTERNATIVE PRICES AND LOOK WHAT I FIND, A BILLION SUNFIRE OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. (OKAY BUT A LOT) AND THESE ARE JUST THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE BOTHERED TO COMPLAIN. BEEN DEALING WITH THIS FOR YEARS, ITS NOW AT THE POINT I DESCRIBED ABOVE. I HAVE EMISSIONS AT THE END OF MARCH. SO LOOKS LIKE I'M OUT 1 WEEKS PAY (EARNING A BIT MORE, BUT NOT MUCH) BECAUSE GM WONT OWN UP TO THEIR CHEAPLY MANUFACTURED PARTS. BUY AMERICAN? GEE I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THAT MENTALITY DIDN'T SURVIVE THE 80'S. MY NEXT CAR? FROM A MANUFACTURER THAT CARES ABOUT QUALITY. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-24
  • VIN: 3G2JB12F75S
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ALL GAUGES IN THE VEHICLE HAVE STOPPED WORKING (I.E. SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER, FUEL, AND TEMP GAUGES). TOLD THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH PONTIAC SUNFIRE MODELS FROM YEARS 2003-2005. ALSO, WITH THE CHEVROLET CAVALIER 2003-2005, WHICH IS BASICALLY THE SAME CAR. GM CHANGED SUPPLIERS FOR THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR THESE YEARS. INSTRUMENT FAILURE IS CAUSED BY THE INFERIOR PARTS USED BY GM, AND IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. ONE CAN NOT BLAME INSTRUMENT FAILURE ON A LACK OF MAINTENANCE OF THE VEHICLE ON THE OWNER. ESPECIALLY ON A VEHICLE THAT TRAVELS ROUGHLY 5,000 MILES A YEAR. SUCH AN ISSUE IS THE FAULT OF THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEIR USE OF SUB-PAR MATERIALS. HAVE CHECKED FUSES, AND HAD THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CHECKED (I.E. IT'S NOT A SHORT TO GROUND PROBLEM). THESE ARE NOT THE RESULT OF THE GAUGES FAILING. TOLD THE COST WOULD BE OVER $500 FOR A NEW INSTRUMENT GAUGE CLUSTER. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL BY GM FOR THIS KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-01
  • VIN: 3G2JB12F75S
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE SPEEDOMETER VARIES IN IT'S POSITION. IT'S SOMETIMES OK, THEN IT WILL FREEZE AT MAYBE 50 MPH, THEN GO UP TO OVER A HUNDRED MPH. NEXT TIME IT MAY FREEZE AT 20 MPH, ETC. I DON'T KNOW HOW FAST I'M GOING, AND DON'T WANT TO GET A TICKET FOR SPEEDING. I'M TRYING TO USE MY ODOMETER, BUT DISTRACTS ME TO TRY AND FIGURE IT OUT. I DON'T SEE A RECALL, BUT I KNOW THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE. I THINK IT'S TIME GM OWNS UP TO IT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX THIS, NOT, AT THE OWNERS COST. MY RESEARCH SHOWS ME THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS SPEEDOMETER FAILURE. I AM TOLD BY MY DEALER THAT IT IS THE CLUSTER, WHICH IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. I AM RETIRED AND LOVE THIS CAR, BUT DON'T HAVE THE MONEY MAKE IT SAFE TO DRIVE. *TR

  1. Scottie Tillman 2024-08-13

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've had this car for about 7 months now and it's been an absolute blast. It's bright red and handles like a dream, which always puts a smile on my face. I've even had strangers come up to me to ask questions or compliment it, which is always a fun experience.

  2. Damien Bradtke 2024-04-29

I purchased this car in 2003 and have since experienced some issues such as water in the trunk, unusual engine noises, and loose seals on the doors and windows. However, it is important to note that with proper maintenance and care, this car can continue to perform well beyond its initial 5-year lifespan.

  3. Enoch Huel 2024-03-22

The car drives great, but there is a weird clunking noise coming from the right dash. I'm not sure what it could be, but I'm hoping to get it resolved soon. On the bright side, the exterior of the car is amazing! I absolutely love the color and style. It fits my personality perfectly.

Positive 2005 Pontiac Sunfire car reviews

  1. Dean Kuhlman 2025-01-06

I've never owned a Pontiac before, but this car not only looks sporty for the money, it also has the pick-up I was looking for. I'm being completely honest when I say that I love this car. I'm truly 100% satisfied with the Pontiac Sunfire. Before I bought this car, I wasn't impressed with any of the other dealership models out there. Thank you, Pontiac. I will definitely return to Pontiac in the future for another purchase.

  2. Floy Weber 2025-01-02

I really appreciate it! This is the best care I've ever had, and the dealer was absolutely fantastic.

  3. Alberto Goldner 2024-11-26

The new 2.2 ecotec engine is very powerful, but not as economical as the old 2.2 it replaced. I think the quality is really good and the car has a solid feel to it.

  4. Axel Lehner 2024-11-01

It sounds like you found a great car! It's sporty, fun, and easy on the wallet. I'm so glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase. If anyone is looking for a reliable and affordable car, I would definitely recommend this one!

  5. Jasper Purdy 2024-10-23

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 3rd Sunbird/Sunfire, and your first one bought new! It's great to hear that you're getting such good gas mileage, and that you haven't had any mechanical problems at all. It sounds like the dealer was really helpful in fixing the issue with the trunklid, which is great to hear. I'm also happy to hear that you're getting great performance from the 2.2L engine, and that you're still enjoying the styling after 4 years. It's awesome that the dropdown rear seatbacks have allowed you to carry more than you thought you could! And while I agree that the cupholders could be better placed, it sounds like you've kept things simple with the base model, which is great. It's also good to hear that you have a very good sound system, and that you're keeping up with normal maintenance. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
